(2) If the only way you can "get away" is to run further down a dark alley, you haven't gotten away. Again, you have to keep fighting. The argument: I think she did it right. She had disarmed him. Correctly, she made her escape facing him, with the gun pointed in his direction--mostly. (Ignoring the purse issue.) Even if she's not entirely sure of her firearm skill, I think she was still covered. So it's far safer to end the HTH in that position than risk continuing it. A friend argues the contrary. He contends she should have checked her path, placing her back to the wall to ensure there were no accomplices--or trip hazards for that matter. Since she'd need to take her eyes off her assailant, she should club him with the pistol. Checking for accomplices? I think that's a red herring. He's right--as a professional wrangler for VIPs. He and I would do as he says. But this is no assassin targeting an ambassador. In this context (street crimes against women) I've never heard accomplices who didn't make their presence known. They all want to "help" right at the start. He also correctly contends she couldn't rely on advantage from the weapon, quoting my own words against me: "never trust another man's kills or another man's gun." No, I don't know the gun was loaded. It might have been used for intimidation. Nor did she check the safety setting on the gun; she didn't have time to. Still, men resorting to use of any firearm to intimidate a single female target are generally not much threat without it. Yes, I concede that's usually. But, even so, I stand by my original read. She has a good chance to flee and should take it, beating feet while he's still in "WTF????" mode. Stunned that his victim, whom he had grossly underestimated, just took his weapon from him. That said, my colleague's suggestion IS the better practice. Obviously. IF the woman can think to do it. Absolutely. BUT... Honestly, there's only so much women can be taught in a single course before their brains fill. We don't want them to forget the truly important stuff. (These techniques ARE taught in a more advanced courses. And I do recommend taking them, too, if time and finances permit. I recommend courses on defense against multiple attackers, and against weapons.) In an argument less well taken, my wife Beth also argued (initially) that the assailant should be clubbed before the victim's flight. Yet, oddly, Beth wasn't concerned about the woman retrieving her purse. I found that intellectually inconsistent. Her rebuttal: "After I've pistol-whipped the base of his skull, and then stomped his bent-down head face down into the floor, and kicked him in the kidney for good measure, I'd have PLENTY of time to get my purse." Her "rebuttal" confirmed my suspicion re: her true motive. Beth would just WANT to kick the guy's butt some more, whether or not it was warranted or prudent. I concede intellectual consistency. But by winning that battle, she loses the war. She agrees, and now says "do has he tells you, not as I would [*sigh* still] do." (Less)
