It was really a mind-blowing topic, "A Compelling Desire for Deafness" written by David Veale that was published in the summer of 2006 in the Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education. I found it intriguing about how the article described the cases that focused on Self-Injured Behavior (SIB) and one of them identified a group of hearing people who wanted to become deaf. It allowed me to analyze difference cases that described how hearing wanted to become deaf as there were different ways.
For example, there is a hearing woman who wears a cotton wool dabbed with oil then placed it in her both ears so that noises can be prevented and it allows her to focus on learning signs easily. It is rationale for one to do it in order to focus on signs without the interference of noises. I recalled my former student teacher putting cotton wool in his ears that he wanted to focus entirely on signs and not to be distracted by noises so that he could learn signs better. It made sense to me but for this woman it was a different case since she wanted to become deaf. A psychologist in Great Britain who studied this case that a woman who wanted to become deaf concluded that the reason was because she wanted to gain her identity for herself so that she could be accepted by the Deaf community. Now here are several interesting questions to think about: Will those who are recognized that their desire to become deaf be labeled as one of the mental disorder cases? Or will it ever be acceptable for hearing patients to be offered an elective surgery to meet their needs?
Normally, there are different cases for the Deaf who want to become hearing (as in their attitude) as they desire by wearing assistive technology devices such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc. are not classified as a mental disorder case that the society perceives this as a normal case. However, for the hearing individuals who want to become deaf were identified as abnormal.
Now allow me to tell you in depth about these SIB cases that had actually happened indeed. Remember that long time ago when transsexual came in the picture, people perceived it in a very negative way and labeled as one of the mental disorder cases. It seems to me now this is much more acceptable whereas elective genital change or to remove the sexual parts is allowed that is now offered by the medical society. There is another case that where a group of individuals who wanted to contract HIV so that they can share similar experiences with their partners who have it. Again, there is another case about amputees who wanted to continue to remove their limbs. These are the examples as an elective surgery that they get to make their own decisions what they want to do with their bodies.
Now this case about a 36 year old woman who felt trapped like a Deaf person in a hearing body never felt right about it. She has a normal hearing and reported high sensitivity to sounds, not that she has a problem with tinnitus that means ringing in your ears. She just feels that sounds are associated to anger, irritation, aggravation that she wanted to do away with that with no sounds to hear, she feels peaceful. But she continues to struggle that she has a great difficulty to deal with background noises. When she got to learn British Sign Language (BSL), she finally felt like home. It is just like when a gay person comes in a gay bar and feels like right at home. That how was described in the article. Interesting!

Eyeglasses have long been considered a fashion accessory, but until recently hearing aids were something to hide. Now, a new hearing device allows users to join the growing trend.
Traditionally, hearing aids have been hidden behind the ear or made in flesh-colored tones. But, the latest devices are an expression of personality. The "Vibe," a mini hearing aid worn outside the ear, can be used as fashion accessory. It comes in a wide range of plastic covers -- allowing its look to be changed each day to match the wearer's style.
Other benefits include the latest in advanced signal processing and amplification technologies. It can also be worn with a cycling helmet and doesn't interfere with wearing glasses -- or get caught in your hair.

Noisy environments pose the greatest problems for people with this common condition, commonly caused by both Noise exposure and the ageing process, but with the aid of "noise reduction" and "directional microphones", life is made much easier. I wanted to thank you for being in Madison this weekend. My daughter is Claire Massie, the girl with the hearing aid, that you prayed for last night.
She has worn TWO hearing aids for the last year and has had over 13 ear surgeries in her 14 years. The main problem has been the fluid in her ear is like glue and even when tubes were inserted the surgeon would have to remove the fluid with a syringe because it was so thick it would not drain normally.
Claire was wearing only one hearing aid last night because last month she had her ear drum replaced in the opposite ear and was not able to wear her hearing aid because she was still recovering (and had no hearing in that ear).
When you asked Bro Jason to speak to her (out of her sight) I KNEW without a doubt she had been healed in that ear. Claire is excellent at lip reading and I knew God directed you to have Bro Jason speak out of her sight to build my faith. She/we have been praying for healing since she was 3 years old (when we first knew there was a problem with her hearing).
Later last night, at the altar service, Claire and I were rejoicing and Claire held her hand up to her OTHER ear and said, Mama, this ear keeps draining (the one without the hearing aid). She had 3 kleenexes full of drainage in her hand. I said, Baby, let it drain. God is doing something. All of a sudden, her face beamed and she screamed, "I CAN HEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
On a side note, normally I can get ready for work in the mornings without disturbing Claire because she could not hear but, this morning, much to her chagrin :), she woke up with the noise I was making. PRAISE GOD!
I was hoping to tell you about this last night when I came in Pastor's office to take care of church business...but in writing is probably better any way.
Also, I apologize for walking in you at Pastor's house. I didn't realize you were there or I would have never just walked in..........
Thanks again for following the Holy Ghost.

This video is dedicated to Ally, he is pretty much responsible for the whole cats in capes saga, in fact it has just begun, who knows where it will take us?
My heart is in the shape
Of a cat flying in a cape
My heart is in a shape
Similar to a cat... in a cape.
That's why we're cats in capes
There's no need to hate us because of what we are
Or what we're not
Or what you perceive us to be
I may not look much like a cat
A similar one without the ears and that,
But yeah I'm a cat with a long blonde tail
And a look in my eyes that says 'hell'
'gimmie hell, gimmie HELL,
I'm a cat in a cape, my heart's in the right shape to be, a cat,
that no-one would look twice at,
but I would be wearing a cape, a peculiar shape of a cape, like a triangle but curled at the edge,
a cat in a hat,
a cat in a cape,
a cat in a shape,
a cat with a beard ...or something
Round in it's eyes
like a spectacle you could find,
a shape of a beard,
or a face like a hearing aid
The cat has AIDS no
That cat can see into the future,
it can see your ties it can see your lambs
it can see the men who went to Vietnam
And your heart is gone,
it didn't really exist
and you know ,
that you can't
beat a cat,
in a cape,
and you can't
go past me,
when I am in the shape,
my heart is the shape,
I'm wearing a cat
I'm holding a cape,
im wearing a hat
my heart's the right shape
For you..
It might be hard to grasp,
but I am stuck in a place
It might be hard to ask me,
but yes,
on the inside, past what you can see,
there lies something hidden, deep inside of me,
when you look at the shape of my heart, and you look at the cape on my head,
you'd find that the shape, a cat in a cape,
my heart is the shape of a cat in a cape.
Don't touch me me behind my ear,
don't stroke my tail too hard,
don't stroke me the wrong way,
or leave me out, in your back yard.
I feel like a cat today,
I feel like a cat they say,
but I don't look anything like a furry little thing,
noooooo
I'm not so black and white,
I'm not even a ginger cat, not even a ginger cat,
not even a stripy one,
I'm a cat,
And my only discernable feature
is that I'm in a cape.
Like a super-cat,
but not as fast,
like a man with a face,
but not as not furry....
Than a cat,
with plenty of hair on my face, and whiskers to get me through the doors,
whiskers to get me through the doors
and people that feed me now and then,
I don't need clothes, just my cape to help me fly,
I'm a cat,
Don't ask why,
don't ask why,
don't ask why, I think I'm a cat in a cape
don't ask why,
don't ask why, I think I'm a cat in a cape
I'm strangely circular, this cat's quite grumpy now
Why won't you ask me to hold you?
What's in the tin, can I put my tongue in, what's in the tin?
look at the milk, I want the milk
Look at the tin, let me put my tongue in, what's in the tin, OMGOMG it's whiska's!
I'm a cat in a cape,
my heart is the shape of a cat,
a cat in a cape,
my head's the shape of poison.... (Less) Channel: youtube

Description: The purpose of the upcoming social awareness protest at AG Bell Conference on July 27th and 28th, 2007 at Arlington, VA will be discussed. There has been a strong interest to form a Deaf Bilingual (More) The purpose of the upcoming social awareness protest at AG Bell Conference on July 27th and 28th, 2007 at Arlington, VA will be discussed. There has been a strong interest to form a Deaf Bilingual Coalition (DBC) expressed by the deaf community along with a list of goals shared by the participants to ensure that every deaf child has the right to access to American Sign Language from the start. For the focal point of this social awareness protest, the public needs to know from the media that there are eight benefits of baby signing that are used generally by hearing parents and hearing babies. But the question is: why have a social awareness protest at AG Bell Conference? Play YouTube AG Bell has formed a partnership with Audio-Verbal Therapy group (AVT) group that advocates deaf babies who receives cochlear implantation to focus on unisensory stimulation only, and shuns American Sign Language throughout the process. Baby Signs are a growing phenomenon with research-based benefits and the greatest irony of all is that Deaf Babies are not allowed to sign during AVT sessions. Now let's look at why Baby Signs are being used to hearing babies. You may wonder what made it attractive for parents to use signs even though they can hear and that they have to learn signs? Derived from the website, The intellectual benefits of baby signing include: 1. Baby Sign Language increases the speed of the development of verbal language. 2. Baby signing increases vocabulary. 3. Baby signing reinforces the use of verbal language. 4. Baby Sign Language promotes language learning through concept. 5. Baby Signing reinforces a child's communication attempts. 6. Baby Sign Language promotes early literacy. 7. Baby Sign Language increases interests in books. 8. Baby Signing promotes the early use of complex sentences. Baby sign benefits extend to children over 3 years old also. Older children who used Baby Sign Language as infants and toddlers have better verbal and reading skills. Many parents use books along with teaching sign language. When you point to a picture and then show the sign for the word, both reading and communication skills are improved. Vocabulary is developed earlier and grows faster. The kinesthetic elements of signing reinforce verbal skills. But what about speech delay if AG Bell asks? Research shows that learning sign language does not delay speech, but in fact aids speech development. Most baby signers speak earlier than babies who do not learn baby sign language. You can actually teach an infant Baby Sign Language, and it will promote the use of speech sooner rather than later. Language is conceptual. Why are we not saying anything about poor deaf babies who are denied to sign language? Now I hope you can see that this is a clear message that the DBC group is able to point out to the media. This will be one of the demonstrations that will allow the concerned public to open up the dialogue and raise public awareness that will eventually get this table brought to a legislative level. Now it is the time to protest for the sake of deaf babies who suffer the language deficiency just because organizations like AG Bell whose partnership is with AVT continue to spread the propaganda without the benefits of using signs. It is evident that they are not being inclusive on explaining to hearing parents on how using signs with their deaf babies ages 0-4 years old are able to benefit greatly based on 8 points listed above. It is evident that there are multiple benefits for hearing babies using signs and that deaf babies are missing out these opportunities based on 8 benefits. Now we need to ask: Why is it that signs are still not part of deaf babies lives? Never mind that lame excuse when parents were told it was difficult to learn sign language or that it was considered a foreign language to them. Because of today's access to technology allows interaction online and with DVDs and that more sign language classes and Shared Reading Projects are provided to parents for free, this is no longer an issue. If hearing parents can do it with their hearing babies, why is it not possible to learn for deaf babies? It is only 80 dollars for DVD set. On baby signs found on Missy Keast's website. The quotes are taken from websites listed in the resource list below: "The whole point of baby signs is not to raise IQ's. We're not in this for better babies in that sense - we're in this for better family interaction." "Baby signs might also satisfy the great curiousity about what your baby is thinking." "Baby Signs" help brain development and problem-solving skills." Imagine being able to communicate with sign words before the age 1 or so. A stronger communication bond will occur between family members. It makes more sense to communicate first with signs since babies, hearing or deaf, have yet developed motor speech coordination skills. Why delay communicating with babies? Why wait for the baby to develop speech? DBC believes that engaging in a social awareness protest can strengthen their campaign, attract press coverage and raise funds. It will also help open dialogue between your campaign and anyone opposing it. Here's what will happen in the protest: Each participant will be wearing a shirt with the slogan on it. It would be: "Why Hearing Babies sign BUT Deaf Babies Do Not?" There will be no picket signs or posters since it interferes with our need to use hands to communicate. There will be leaflets that list the facts on the benefits of using signs in babies and how oralism failed most deaf individuals. The participants will "chant" the slogan and they will be advised not to be offensive. There will be a variety of media (newspapers, radio, television, internet) coverage taking place where social awareness of this conflict will be raised and shared to the public. Thanks to Aidan Mack, she will be filming the demonstration that will be shared on the internet through a variety of video servers also it will be made accessible to hearing viewers. The idea of this demonstration will be small and simple since it is the first one. There will be no marches or permits required. There will be no abusive argument, or a fight. The DBC is hoping to grow to make it more visible and larger in the future. Giving a deaf child language during the most formative developing age (between infant to 4 years old) increases their chances for communication and comprehension success in the world. As a non-profit political and advocacy organization dedicated to protecting Deaf human and linguistic rights, California Association of the Deaf has generously made it possible for you to make your donations tax-deductible. Visit www.cad1906.org and click on "support for Deaf Bilingual Coalition" on the left side of the home page. The success to make DBC to grow depends on your support. Please forward this link to your friends. Thank you.
