Microsoft Windows 2000, released in February 2000, running in VirtualBox. There are a lot of nice additions in Windows 2000, although most of them can't be shown in a demo; look it up in Wikipedia if you really want a nice list. This is widely regarded to be the most stable release of Windows ever, and several people still use it as their primary operating system; Windows 2000 will continue to get updates until 2010. Four service packs were released, some including extra functionality, but internal stuff that's not important for this video (like USB 2.0 support). The name Windows 2000 caused quite a bit of confusion as its status of either a "business" operating system or a "home"/personal operating system. Obviously, the year as its name implies it is the logical upgrade from Windows 95/98. In 1998, Microsoft changed the name from Windows NT 5.0 to Windows 2000, and assigned the Windows 95/98 marketing team to market Windows 2000. It was planned that Windows 98 was to be the very last version of MS-DOS based Windows, finally moving the home user to the more stable (and slightly more secure) Windows NT operating system. Plans changed, and Windows 2000 was supposed to be a business operating system only (despite obviously having numerous media applications and such that were oriented for personal computing), and Windows Me would become the last MS-DOS-based version of Windows. Despite this, many home users purchased Windows 2000 as an upgrade from 95/98, and some still use it. A Windows 2000 Home Edition was in development, but eventually canceled when Microsoft changed its mind about the MS-DOS vs NT affair. It was called "Windows Neptune" and featured a new log in screen and a help center. Windows Neptune would eventually form the base for the major additions in Windows XP. The canceled Home Edition is probably why the "lowest" edition of Windows 2000 ended up being called Professional (albeit, the other editions were meant for servers, so there really was only one logical choice for home users/clients/workstations).
