The report also says that nobody knows how many of those cases involve illegal immigrants. "We went to try and check that number, 7,000. We can't...," Stahl says. "Well, I can tell you this. If we reported it, it's a fact," Dobbs replies. "You can't tell me that. You did report it," Stahl says. "I just did," Dobbs says. "How can you guarantee that to me?" Stahl asks. Says Dobbs, "Because I'm the managing editor. And that's the way we do business. We don't make up numbers, Lesley, do we?" It turns out that someone did make up those numbers. Even after Dobbs was informed that his information was contradicted by the federal government, he repeated the false information the day after on his show: DOBBS: And there was a question about some of your comments, Christine. Following one of your reports, I told Leslie Stahl, we don't make up numbers, and I will tell everybody here again tonight, I stand 100 percent behind what you said. ROMANS: That's right, Lou. We don't make up numbers here. This is what we reported. Want to know the Truth? The report issued by Department of Health and Human Services is correct. There were, in fact, 7,000 total number of cases of leprosy over the past 30 years, and as Dobbs himself has admitted, "no one knows" how many can be attributed to undocumented immigrants. Dobbs's correspondent took the figure from an article written by medieval expert Madeleine Cosman in the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, a publication that has been described by some as a "right-wing" and "untrustworthy" periodical. On the December 4, 2007 edition of Democracy Now!, journalists Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez brought up the case of (by then deceased) Madeleine Cosman to Lou Dobbs. In response, Dobbs claimed that a New York Times obituary found her to be a credible source on immigration: DOBBS: Did you read that obituary? Did you find that the New York Times had come to basically the same conclusion we had, that she was a credible source? Because if you read that obituary, it is glowing and filled with plaudits for Madeleine Cosman. The Truth: The New York Times never called her a "credible source." In fact, the headline description in her obituary is "Madeleine P. Cosman, 68, Medieval Expert, Dies." They never call her a "respected medical lawyer and medical historian," as Dobb's correspondent had, only a day after the 60 Minutes report exposed their lies. The obituary did note that Cosman's article was "widely reproduced on anti-immigration and other conservative Web sites." Is that what you meant by "plaudits", Lou? And exactly who was Madeleine Cosman? Authorities said they have interviewed five possible victims in the case. Victims may range in age from toddlers to teens, authorities said. CNN does not identify children involved in sex abuse cases and has chosen not to identify adult defendants because they may share family names with the alleged victims. Investigators believe the abuse took place between 1999 and 2002 and involved a "select few" congregants of the now-defunct Hosanna Church, Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's spokeswoman Laura Covington said. On Saturday, law enforcement authorities issued an arrest warrant for a ninth person in the case, said sheriff's deputies in Tangipahoa Parish, where the church was located. The church's former pastor told deputies Tuesday in nearby Livingston Parish -- where the pastor lives -- that adults were sexually abusing children, parish sheriff's Detective Stan Carpenter said. The former pastor told deputies he had been having sex with children for many years and "also educated the children as to how to perform sexual acts with each other and with animals," Carpenter said. Carpenter said the pastor unwittingly implicated himself while talking to investigators. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated rape of a child under age 13 and one count of crimes against humanity for alleged sexual acts involving animals, the detective said. Among those the pastor allegedly implicated were his 45-year-old wife -- also charged with aggravated rape of a juvenile under age 13, Carpenter said. Law enforcement authorities conducting the investigation include sheriff's deputies from Tangipahoa Parish, Livingston Parish, officers of the Ponchatoula Police Department and the FBI. On Friday, a police search of two homes resulted in confiscation of three vehicles, computers and other items that authorities said may be connected to the case. The FBI took custody of the vehicles. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said some of the crimes are believed to have been committed in the vehicles. All but one of the defendants in the case are jailed without bond. They are charged with aggravated rape of a child under 13 -- a charge which, if convicted, can carry a death sentence in Louisiana, authorities said. Also in police custody -- in addition to the pastor and his wife -- are a sheriff's deputy and a woman who tipped off investigators by telephoning them from Ohio, authorities said. About six weeks before the pastor spoke with Livingston Parish sheriff's deputies, a former church member phoned the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff and tipped off deputies, sheriff's spokesperson Covington said. The 36-year-old woman was taken into custody in Ohio on a Louisiana warrant charging her with aggravated rape of a child under age 13, Covington said. Catholic sex abuse cases Clerical sexual deviancy allegations have been made against a variety of religious groups including but not exclusively Roman Catholic priests, monks, and nuns. An estimated 0.2% of Roman Catholic priests have been proven to be abusers. Some incidents involved diocesan priests and members of the various Roman Catholic religious orders, with reports coming from the United States and Ireland. Cases involved seminaries, schools, orphanages and other institutions (such as the Irish industrial schools) where children were in the care of clergy. Criticism of the Church and its leadership focused on the failure to act upon information, and often to move priests who had received complaints from church to church in order to protect them. Some allegations have led to successful prosecutions of the accused, as well as civil cases settling for millions of dollars. The John Jay Report,[2] commissioned by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, found accusations against 4,392 priests in the USA, equalling about 4% of all U.S. priests between 1950 and 2002. Figures supplied by the Catholic League promote the view that abuse statistics in the Catholic Church are similar to abuse in other institutions such as the preliminary estimate of education abuse statistics compiled by the U. S. Department of Education. During a recent visit to the United States Pope Benedict admitted that he is "deeply ashamed" of the clergy sex abuse scandal that has devastated the American church. Proposition 73 provides that, as part of a waiver proceeding, the juvenile court report evidence of abuse to the appropriate child protection agency, so that the problem can be addressed, not covered up. Abortion providers rarely report evidence of statutory rape, sexual abuse, or molestation to child protective services. Instead they provide a secret, taxpayer-funded abortion, and the minor returns to the same abusive environment — vulnerable to further exploitation, pregnancies, abortions, and sexually transmitted disease. Proposition 73 also protects minor girls from being coerced to have an abortion. It provides young pregnant girls access to the juvenile court to protect them from threats or violence. A minor child, under 18, cannot be issued an aspirin at school without parental consent. Minors cannot go on school field trips without parental notification and consent. Because they have poor or under-developed judgment, minors cannot be sentenced to death, but currently they can decide to have an abortion. Parents will be held responsible for any costs or complications stemming from their minor daughter's abortion. Public opinion polls show a majority of Americans agree that parents should be informed about their daughter's abortion. Parental support is necessary to deal with the aftermath of an abortion. Minors cannot drink, get tattoos, smoke, or serve in the military without parental consent. Parental involvement provides vital information that would help avert medical risks and complications. Parental involvement would increase the likelihood that proper follow-up is provided. Without parental involvement, minors who are victims of rape will continue to be victimized. Under Proposition 73, the minor girl can bypass parental notification and go straight to the courts in cases of incest. The United States Supreme Court has upheld parental involvement laws with judicial bypass provisions. A young girl's ability to conceive a child does not mean she is able to make a mature decision about an abortion. More than thirty states currently have parental involvement laws in effect. Their experience, going back well over a decade, has proved that parental involvement laws reduce teen pregnancies and abortions without danger or harm to minors. Parental notification improves family communication and decision-making. Parental involvement will help bring crimes such as statutory rape to the attention of law enforcement officials.
