But Norman Police Chief Phil Cotten has a new appreciation for the quest for peace, after 10 days of total immersion in Turkey's rich history and traditions.Cotten was one of several Oklahomans invited on a special sojourn to Turkey in early June, courtesy of Turkish Republic.
The group also included Norman residents Theresa Vaughan, a University of Central Oklahoma professor, and T. Thomas, a Baptist minister. Others were Sam Bowman, Oklahoma City councilmember; David Goin, Edmond school superintendent; and three state representatives, Al Lindley, D-Oklahoma City; Jabar Shumate, D-Tulsa; and Mike Shelton, D-Oklahoma City.
The group left Oklahoma City on May 30, spent 10 days in Turkey and returned June 11.
"In my opinion, the goal was for us to come back with a very deep appreciation for Turkey and Turkish people and the real true Islam beliefs," Cotten said. "They are very loving and caring people."
He was approached to go on the trip by Dr. Vahap Uysal, a University of Oklahoma finance professor. Cotten had previously attended some of the institute's events and gatherings in Oklahoma City and Norman.
And he knew that Drs. Tom and Barbara Boyd had previously gone on an Institute-sponsored trip.
Cotten spoke with Dr. Barbara Boyd, asking her about what to expect."And she said, 'I'm not going to tell you what to expect, I want you to experience it for yourself.'"Experience it he did. His hosts kept the group going from early morning until 9 or 10 at night or later.
"We just visited all kinds of houses. We went to museums. We went to mosques. We went down into cisterns," Cotten said.
Turkey was the site of many significant events in Christian history, of which their hosts took full advantage. Some believe it's where the Garden of Eden was located and remnants of Noah's Ark are thought to be atop a Turkish mountain. The group traveled to Ephesus and the tomb of Mary, mother of Jesus, where Cotten said there was a lot of circumstantial evidence of her presence.Another interesting site was Cappadocia, where early Christians fled Roman persecution.
Cotten said he saw no evidence of anti-Americanism at all, just the opposite.
He relates a story about the group going into a restaurant the first evening before they went to the hotel.
Two men at another table heard them speaking English and one asked their hosts who they were.
"(They) explained it to them and it turned out he was part of their movement and bought dinner for us, just out of the blue," Cotten said. "People were always doing nice things."
Cotten came away with a warm regard for the country, the hosts and their strong desire for peace and harmony. "There wasn't any ulterior motives other than just friendships and building relationships. People were so friendly."

Addendum: Alternate Reality; Sequel to Chimera: Redux.
Memo: There is a semi detailed scene analysis listed below that you can refer to if the video is confusing. I personally think the video is & should be pretty self explanatory, as I tried to make it appear that way.
Once again, I'd like to stress that Gwen's role in this saga is that of Ethan's wife. She doesn't know a thing about Theresa, other than the fact that she's Ethan's ex-love, and that they have a child together.
Also, I like to believe that my version of Gwen is above all the petty bullshit that you've seen on Passions. This video will more than likely be the last appearance that Gwen makes in this trilogy, but you never know...I may or may not have her pop back into town in the final chapter.
I will say this, though: Gwen, should she appear in the finale, will NOT be after Ethan. I'd just like to give some closure for the character, and to show that there is life after a difficult breakup. :D
Chimera - Folie à Deux: Scene By Scene Analysis
Definition: A condition in which symptoms of a mental disorder, such as the same delusional beliefs or ideas, occur simultaneously in two individuals who share a close relationship or association. Folie à deux (literally, "a madness shared by two") is a rare psychiatric syndrome in which a symptom of psychosis (particularly a paranoid or delusional belief) is transmitted from one individual to another.
0:00-0:21: Pilar finds out Theresa is gone; Antonio delivers the goodbye letter that Theresa left. Flashes of the Lopez-Fitzgerald family grieving over the loss of Theresa.
0:21-0:40: Pan on Ethan. He falls into a dream like state, remembering Theresa. The fights that led up to her disappearance, the betrayal she felt, etc.
0:40-0:59: Gwen's ephipany. She thinks about her relationship with Ethan, their arguments over Theresa's disappearance, Ethan's distance regarding their marriage.
0:59-1:18: Gwen & Ethan talk to friends, respectively. Gwen confides in Sheridan about Ethan's love for Theresa, whilst Ethan confides in Chad about his inability to move on without the love of his life.
1:18-1:38: Gwen's realization that Ethan does not love her. She vows to move on with her life.
1:38-1:58: Ethan's discussion with Gwen about their relationship. Gwen informs him that she's leaving him, leaving Harmony.
1:58-2:18: Enter Theresa. She is focused completely on raising her son, but wonders if Ethan Martin will ever know his father.
2:18-2:36: Ethan's encounters with Fancy & Noah remind him of the sole reason of why his marriage to Gwen didn't work...Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald.
2:36-2:56: Theresa confides in Fox & Whitney about her inability to get over her lost love, and the problem it poses in raising her son.
2:56-3:15: Ethan researches Theresa's history, her whereabouts, etc. Through various sources (i.e. Woody), he is able to get an inclination of where she is.
3:15-3:35: Ethan finally locates & calls Theresa, alerting her that there is a family emergency and that she needs to come back to Harmony...as soon as possible.
3:35-4:03: Theresa recalls one of her last rendezvous with Ethan's. After some soul searching, she alerts Whitney that she's going back to Harmony. Fade to black with Theresa leaving her new life to come back to the one she left behind. (Less) Channel: youtube

The idea from this film wasn't to try and copy or remake a restroom scene. Kids was simply made to show that taking a dump is all natural, and yet some people are still "shy" when it comes to dropping off the kids. What we did was try to show comparisons of two guys with completely different personalities when 'taking care of business.' Let us know if you ever had a restroom issue! (Less) Channel: vimeo

Video is shaky because I was driving and filming at the same time. Not a good idea. Video is blurry because of compression needed to make it fit on YouTube.
This brief drive through East. St. Louis, IL on October 3, 2007 brings back memories of childhood growing up on 470 N. 21st Street, where our home no longer stands. To help bring back some memories, I inserted some pictures of when we were kids. I didn't have any of Mark, but he was certainly there too. Then past St. Elizabeth's where we went to church and grade school. Then past St. Theresa Academy, where Anna Marie and Mib's went to high school and then on to Assumption High School, where Pete, Paul and Mark went. Then, over to St. Albert's (actually it was St. Martin's church, my mistake) where Mom worked in later years and lived with Aunt Ronnie. Great Memories! Thanks, Mom and Dad, for all you gave us kids. You were the best. I hope no one takes offense with the song by Elvis I picked. It didn't seem like the ghetto when we lived there and it may not seem like it to those who live there now, but as I drove through this time, that is the song that came to mind.

What follows is an excerpt from Joey Velasco's speech at the start of his Book Launching and First Solo Exhibit in Art Asia. His book is entitled "They Have Jesus: The Stories of the Children of Hapag" and was launched on Oct. 13, 2006. -excerpt starts- Jesus Christ never wrote a book. The only scene in the Gospel where we saw him write was on the sand. But what he wrote was blown by the wind. What was etched in our minds forever in history and in eternity was his preference for the outcasts and rejects. In the future, I will be like the sand that will be blown by the wind. I will remain an unknown artist and writer. I will soon be forgotten. May the things I wrote in which I commit myself, be etched forever. Countless books have been written in the past about the triumph of the human spirit and about great men who were larger than life. This simple book purports to share the stories of a handful of small lives whose voices are often unheard and whose tiny dreams are shattered before they can even take form. I just allowed them to speak for themselves even amidst the environment of cynicism. Their story does not seem much because it is so simple, but it is definitely deep because it speaks of and mirrors the ills of society. I have learned from them that immersion or "sawsaw suka" is not enough, just for the feel-good-effect. Presence is the name of the game. Presence is what we are called for. I do not aim to do a Mother Theresa here or to fire up a grand vision like that of the great Tony Meloto whose environmental and social reengineering of Gawad Kalinga is becoming global. I am aware that I am surely not a powerful force to advocate change that will prevent hunger and raise funds. I am not a wealthy person. I am just a painter. I cannot be a front liner of any movement. But I know I can make a difference. This is my personal healing and transformative journey through the children's pain, hope, faith, and liberation that can reach across generations and cultures. I wrote this book not out of conceit or in order to highlight the rare privilege of having painted with and from the heart. I am not sharing my strength as an artist or as a writer, but my weakness as a fellow journeyer, who witnessed these children drifting in the dark. Initially, I thought they were lost only to find out in the end that I was the one who was actually lost. It is not a testimony of how I pitied poor children. It is an acknowledgement of God's abounding compassion for me. I am writing this to share how the Lord Himself painted through me and continues to give His message of hope and unconditional love through my humble work. In doing this, I wish to commit myself more and to live up to what is yet to unfold in the pages of this book. -end of excerpt- This video contains just snippets of the book "They Have Jesus" based on his obra "Hapag ng Pag-asa" (Table of Hope). For more on "Hapag ng Pag-asa" and the kids in the painting, view the videos at these links: Bayani Summit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNLUnHbsL_Y Noche Buena with Hapag Kids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fqrlN0yR4Y This video reminds me of the song, "Get Up and Live" which goes like this: Get up and live, stand up and walk Life is a gift from God You've only got one life, live it well Go to your brothers, help them all. Get up and live! Go to the poor, to the poor in your town Go to the poor, to the poor, my friend. Share their sorrows, let your pride down. Show them you care, try to understand. Get up and live ... Stand up and walk! (Less) Channel: youtube

Oh you know how some people say
that life's a game to her, and if you play
you're gonna need more than weed to pick you up
but look at me you think im scared?
ive got balls like a rocket
and fists ready to flare
i aint going down with no mothership
people tell me that there aint no escape
from that lets be friends, who hook up but dont date
somebody always gonna be sleepin' on the floor again
But like every other guy I'm determined to find
A sweet down to earth bgal who buys every line
And even if she doesn't she just smiles, and doesn't mind
---
ive been through Sally
and we've all seen May
frankly im not happy with it but i hit Jane
and honestly to me they were all the same
i made Jen angry with a flick of the wrist
don't ask me about Theresa she is probably still pissed
And as far as I can tell both damn me to hell, well might as well
-
I still see your pretty face every time that I sing your song
Through the love of your embrace, tried to right all my songs
Kiss me once and I'll relive any moment that we were we
Oh lord, I miss my sweet lady
-
Take it down for a minute to see
Just because a girl can smile don't mean she can be pleased
when its not enough, "its just too much" and when you think you're right, you're not
Now I speak my truths from what I've heard
What I've seen, whats been said, and the scars under my nerves
There are still a few ladies who'd curse my name
They don't ask for apologies, they just want pain
I've stumbled through London
made sweet love in france
like every other guy ive been in debbie's pants
the real secret is telling her you're in a rock 'n roll band
-
I still see your pretty face every time that I sing your song
Through the love of your embrace, tried to right all my songs
Kiss me once and I'll relive any moment that we were we
Oh lord, I miss my sweet lady

Good News and Bad News from the World's Largest Religion It takes a moment to reconcile oneself to the fact that the religious tradition of St. Francis and Mother Theresa is also the tradition of the Crusades and the Inquisition. Fr. Thomas Keating, considered one of the great contemplatives of our time, has spent a lifetime in the practice of Christianity, seeking and sharing its depths. The goal of the tradition, suggests Fr. Thomas in this week's video, is transformation—but transformation into what? The answer depends on what stage of development you're at. Beyond becoming a better person (though your family and friends may thank you profusely), beyond even becoming a saint, Fr. Thomas suggests that the goal of the mature Christian life is to become no thing. As with any developmental sequence, the subject of one stage becomes the object of the subject of the next—in this case, until absolute Subjectivity itself. The problem—and the challenge—lie in the fact that, among its 2 billion adherents, relatively few are aware of Christianity's mystical tradition and contemplative path. Statements like "I'm spiritual, but not religious" actually come from a fairly evolved place, from which one rejects external aspects of the tradition, while still longing for its esoteric wisdom. Integral spirituality offers an entirely new perspective on this question. From this perspective, we can see that although the stories of the world's religious traditions vary wildly, the contemplative experience is essentially similar. And from Integral, we can appreciate the stories for what they are, the first rung in a ladder of development—both our own development, and that of anyone on a similar path. In the end, no matter how profound the state in which we experience the divine, it is always interpreted from our stage of development. Integral also points to the reality of our shadow, and points out that we might need something other than our contemplative practice to bring it into the light. Finally, Integral can help us both to transform into deeper stages of awareness and compassion, and to translate our current stage in the healthiest way possible. (Less) Channel: youtube
