Formerly of the band "The Servants" (who had featured on the seminal compilation C86), Haines later created the Auteurs with his then girlfriend Alice Readman (bass), old school friend, Glenn Collins on drums and James Banbury (cello). Their first single "Showgirl" was praised by Melody Maker, and ensured the band a record deal with Hut. The following album, New Wave (1993), was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize and saw The Auteurs associated with the emerging Britpop genre. However this association never sat well with Haines who frequently made derogatory remarks about his peers. After New Wave, the band remained on the fringes of the music scene. The critically acclaimed[citation needed] album Now I'm a Cowboy in 1994 built on the themes of New Wave and contained what remains probably Haines' best-known song, "Lenny Valentino". Demonstrating, again, their difference from their musical peers, the band's next release was The Auteurs vs -Ziq, Auteurs songs remixed by producer -Ziq (aka Michael Paradinas): in interviews at the time Haines claimed he found contemporary techno and house music more interesting than most Britpop bands. In 1996 The Auteurs released After Murder Park, produced by Steve Albini, and including the songs "Land Lovers", "Unsolved Child Murder", and "Buddha." The album was recorded at Abbey road studios following a year during which Haines had spent most of the year in a wheelchair after jumping off a wall to avoid the strains of touring. Haines then went on to release an eponymous record under the name Baader Meinhof about the Baader Meinhof terrorist organisation that same year. The last Auteurs record, How I Learned to Love the Bootboys, was released in 1999. Haines also worked as one third of the art-pop band Black Box Recorder, and in 2001 released the soundtrack album to the film Christie Malry's Own Double-Entry rapidly followed by his first solo album proper, The Oliver Twist Manifesto. 2003 saw him release Das Capital, a collection of re-recorded Auteurs era songs, with a couple of new tracks, apparently intended as closure for that band. Haines himself has asserted that his music will only be truly appreciated by later generations - possibly in the same way as The Velvet Underground achieved greater popularity after they had already split up[citation needed]. The Auteurs' James Banbury has recently gone on to record an album with the eminent journalist/writer/musician Paul Morley under the name Infantjoy. Entitled 'Where the Night Goes', it is a radical stylistic departure from his earlier work with Haines, blending modern electronica, Erik Satie and glitch. It features a vocal performance by Sarah Nixey of Black Box Recorder singing a version of Japan's Ghosts. It's still not even close to perfect, but at least improved; much easier on the eyes than the first.
Okay. Wow. Apparently my drawings have gone through several... stages. Some are outright bad. Some are okay but obviously rushed. 1:33 is how I draw NOW and the style I plan to stick with. The wannabe-anime eyes I used to draw on everybody just DON'T work for people like Ray, so I'm deciding to develop a very, VERY simplified face with a cute and at least semi-proportional body, unlike a couple of those originals... xD Dang. Save the final chorus, all the pictures are the exact same ones used in the original video. Bet you couldn't even tell how horribly sloppy they were before. It was subconsciously sneaky of myself, I must say, to have filmed it that way so you only see the basic outline of everything and not how lame it looks. What is WITH those tiny shoes and freaky head shapes, man? I dunno. Now I like to draw big ol' clunky shoes and a certain curve to the head. And as for that final chorus, they're pics recycled from my 100 Themes, plus 1:33 which I drew quite recently (and took a heck of a lot of time coloring) and which is the only one I consider to look decent. X_x Well, I mean, the more I peek at it the more okay everything looks (not wonderful, just OKAY, because it's so, I dunno, plain... white background and all...), probably because I worked so hard making all the lines visible because even the scans came out light and unclear, so at the end of it all, I hope it's all acceptably nice to watch. =D
Song retains all its original lyrics, and here they are:
I bet you weren't even trying
When you cast out your -lure-
Just being yourself sent bait flying
I took that -bait- for sure
Being caught up in love's like being -caught up in a net-
But it's as lucky as anyone can ever hope to get
"Plenty -fish in the sea-"
But that logic is flawed
There's just one right for me:
The man behind the rod
-Ray of hope-, my future's brighter than it's ever looked
'Cause you have absolutely got me hooked!
Too many good points to name, but I guess I'll name some
You're just perfect, no matter what -angle- I look at you from
Shy but sweet, really nice, devoted, deep thinker
Now it looks like you've got me... -hook, line, and sinker-
Pretty fish in the sea
But I look past facade
There's just one right for me
That's the man 'hind the rod
Ray of hope, my future's brighter than it's ever looked
'Cause you have absolutely got me hooked!
Just came here for a new life
Guess that came true, for -reel-
Becoming a loving wife?
That wasn't part of the deal
But your goal's to hunt your -"King"-; well, I'm sure I found mine
And I know you'll stay with me till the end of the -line-
"Plenty fish in the sea"
But that logic is flawed
There's just one right for me:
The man behind the rod
Ray of hope, my future's brighter than it ever has looked
'Cause you have absolutely got me...
You have got me -hooked!-
Yep! So, I hope I sang it a little better this time. It was hard to sing and look down to film the pictures off the floor at the same time in one take for the original. I don't know why I did that... O.o 'Cause I was a loser who didn't even know how to use Windows Movie Maker, that's why. But I REALLY tried hard to take my time and sing my best for this one, even though I still hate my own voice. =P I had my mind set on a background piano tune, but, sadly, I can't play my keyboard worth Chulowfish. xD I needed something to make it sound more musical, so some notes are scattered throughout, but as you can tell the melody isn't all that magical or anything... xP
Really hope you enjoy. It's still not perfect, but I wanna make the one topic that means the most to me (worshipping Ray) as well-done as I can manage. ^^
P.S. RECALL WARNING (not really): If anyone has a RoseArt fluorescent pink colored pencil... dispose of it immediately!!! xD It's a demon pencil! DEMON, I say! The only reason the pink on my vest is lamely MS-Paint-spray-canned into all the scanned pictures is because the color (just that ONE color) totally vanished on the computer images. O_o; Seriously. It DID NOT wash out of the original pictures. Every instance of pink just DOES NOT APPEAR /after/ scanning. I still have no idea why. That creepy phantom utensil!!! =O

Trac Nª 3/9
STRAWBERRIES OCEANS SHIPS FOREST
The album consists of samples of McCartney material, mostly from the sessions that spawned his Off the Ground album, as well as samples of "Reception" and "The Broadcast" from 1979's Back to the Egg, as remixed by Youth. Neither McCartney nor Youth are credited on the album; rumours of McCartney's involvement were eventually confirmed by EMI.
In a Melody Maker review, Michael Bonner wrote, "Paul McCartney has discovered dance music - and the results are as staggeringly brilliant as those that came from John Lydon's similar road-to-Damascus-like conversion last year. Truly, we live in an age of miracles. Eschewing the easy option of making a remix album, McCartney and his collaborator, Youth, have chosen to follow the likes of Brian Eno down a more experimental and cerebral path. They take a melody and, with dextrous genre-hopping through ambient, trance and house, evolve a number of breathtaking variations. Like snowflakes, each song seems identical to the last, until closer inspection reveals that it has its own unique shape."
The project began when McCartney asked Youth to remix several tracks from McCartney's Off the Ground album for use on possible 12" singles. McCartney stated, "The brief from me was that he should only use stuff from our recordings, because dance mixes often feature a kick-drum sample or a James Brown snare sound and, as a consequence, the record ends up sounding a bit like someone else's so I told Youth that I'd prefer any sound he might select to come off our recordings, mainly 'Off the Ground'."
Regarding the project, Youth has stated, "I didn't think it appropriate to remix any of the Off the Ground tracks the way I'd been briefed. I thought it would be better to do a more conceptual thing - that is, rather than remix a track I thought we should deconstruct the album into samples and then construct a new mix from those. And Paul liked the idea. He was into it, so I went for it."
Eventually, McCartney decided to join Youth in the studio to create new music to add to the tapestry along with the existing samples, and the project became a more collaborative effort. Although originally conceived as a series of 12" remixes, McCartney became so enamored with the results of the sessions that the project became this full-length album, released in 1993 in the United Kingdom, and several months later in 1994 in the United States of America.
Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest, which never charted, is no longer in print. It is, however, available on iTunes. (Less) Channel: youtube
