De groepsnaam is afgeleid van de jazzklassieker Deep Purple, het favoriete nummer van de moeder (of de grootmoeder, naargelang de bron) van gitarist Ritchie (More) Deep Purple is een Britse hardrockband. De groepsnaam is afgeleid van de jazzklassieker Deep Purple, het favoriete nummer van de moeder (of de grootmoeder, naargelang de bron) van gitarist Ritchie Blackmore . Jon Lord startte in 1968 met een band onder de naam "Roundabout" met gitarist Ritchie Blackmore, maar veel succes had hij niet en al snel vertrokken de drummer en de bassist. Via twee mensen die manager van de groep wilden worden kreeg hij Nick Simper als bassist en Ian Paice als drummer. Rod Evans sloot zich bij de groep aan als zanger. De groep wijzigde haar naam in Deep Purple, en nam een eerste single op: "Hush". Dit was gelijk de eerste hit. Op het album zijn Gillan en Glover voor het eerst te beluisteren. Met het overkomen van Roger Glover en Ian Gillan van Episode Six naar Deep Purple slaat de groep een andere weg in. Het succes komt met het album Deep Purple in Rock. Deep Purple zette haar naam als Hard Rock groep. Samen met groepen als Led Zeppelin en Black Sabbath hebben zij deze stijl ontwikkeld. In het begin van de jaren '70 stond de band bekend als "progressief" of als "underground". Black Night wordt een hit in Nederland, maar komt niet op het album te staan. Na In Rock volgt Fireball, waarvan de verkoopcijfers enigszins tegenvallen. In de VS komt de klassieker Strange Kind of Woman op het album te staan in plaats van Demon's Eye. Het titelnummer Fireball wordt een bescheiden hit in ons land. Groter succes komt er als Child In Time (verdeeld over twee singlekanten) op single verschijnt in de Benelux. Het nummer zou later 7 jaar op nummer 1 staan in Veronica's Top 100 aller tijden. Machine Head wordt zowel artistiek als commercieel een groot succes. In de VS is de groep een mega-act geworden en Smoke on the Water is vaker op de Amerikaanse radio te horen dan het volkslied. Veel tracks van dit album komen in hetzelfde jaar op het dubbellivealbum Made in Japan. De samenstelling van de groep op deze albums was Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord en Ian Paice (MK2). In 1973 verschijnt voorlopig het laatste album in deze bezetting op Who Do We Think We Are. Woman From Tokyo wordt wereldwijd op single gezet. Japan(!) kiest verrassend voor een liveversie van Black Night als A-kant. Nadien werden Ian Gillan en Roger Glover vervangen door David Coverdale en bassist Glenn Hughes die om de lead-vocals streden. Burn is een sterk album met klassiekers als Burn en Mistreated. De songs evolueerden weg van de Heavy Rock en invloeden uit de Blues en de Soul vonden hun weg. Uiteindelijk verliet Ritchie Blackmore met slaande deuren de band en Amerikaanse wonderboy Tommy Bolin nam zijn plaats in. Na enkele live-miskleunen en een knappe Bolin-gesigneerde LP Come taste the Band legde Purple er tijdelijk de bijl bij neer. Bolin maakte, na het sublieme Teaser, nog een tweede LP met zijn eigen Bolin band en overleed kort daarna aan een overdosis drugs op het moment dat hij met zijn eigen band het voorprogramma ging verzorgen voor Jeff Beck. Van de originele leden, Nick Simper en Rod Evans, bracht alleen Simper op een Duits label nog een collector's item album (Slipstreamer) uit, gevolgd door een veel te snel opgenomen miskleun. Alle andere Purple leden bouwden een vrij populaire carrire uit, maar het succes van Deep Purple wist niemand te evenaren. Mr Universe Ian Gillan, Rainbow Ritchie Blackmore, Mr. Hammond Jon Lord, Love is all Roger Glover en Whitesnake David Coverdale waren de voorbeelden van de huidige rockhelden. In 1980 vormde Rod Evans met enkele andere muzikanten een nieuwe line-up van Deep Purple. Bij hun optredens speelden ze voornamelijk songs van de Mark-2 bezetting. Ritchie Blackmore ging toen naar de rechter die bepaalde dat de naam Deep Purple slechts gevoerd kon worden door een band met tenminste 2 leden uit de Mark-II bezetting. De laatsten die de groep versterkten waren Don Airey en Steve Morse. Het eerste album met Morse: Purpendicular wordt goed ontvangen. In 1999 wordt na 30 jaar weer opgetreden met een orkest. Met de London Symphony Orchestra o.l.v. Paul Mann wordt het Concerto uit 1969 opnieuw gespeeld. Op het album en dvd die verschijnen zijn vele gasten te horen zoals Ronnie James Dio en Sam Brown. De huidige samenstelling (2006) is Airey / Gillan / Glover / Morse / Paice, en in deze samenstelling treden ze nog steeds op. Op 9 juni 2006 speelden ze voor de tweede keer op het Arrow Rock Festival te Lichtenvoorde. Tijdens de uitvoering van het nummer "Smoke on the Water" speelt de gitarist Neil Schon van Journey ook mee. De grootste hit van de band is "Child in Time". Dit nummer staat in elke Tijdloze 100 in de bovenste regionen geklasseerd. Hetzelfde geldt voor "Smoke on the water". Deep Purple zou op 27 juli 2006 een concert geven in Libanon. Het concert werd afgelast vanwege de oorlog met Isral. Op 13 november 2006 gaf Deep Purple een eenmalig concert in muziektempel Nikaa in Nice in zuid-Frankrijk. Voorlopig is Deep Purple aan hun 3 jaar durende Rapture Of The Deep Tour. Hierbij zijn ze in de Lotto Arena in Antwerpen geweest. Deep Purple is in 2003 uit geroepen tot beste live-band en trekt sindsdien overal ter wereld weer volle zalen en stadions. Ze doen op dit moment zo'n 150 concerten per jaar en zijn daarmee 1 van de drukste bands ter wereld. Gitarist Steve Morse(sinds eind 1993) is een waardige opvolger van Ritchie Blackmore en heeft ook echt nieuw leven in de band geblazen. Hij is in America ook 5 jaar lang uitgeroepen als beste gitarist en hangt ook in "The Hall of fame". Hij speelt ook nog steeds in zijn eigen band "The Steve Morse band" en in de "Dixie Dreggs". Deep Purple was op 15 juli 2006 ook de afsluiter van het Montreux Jazz Festival, die dat jaar 40 jaar bestond. Deep Purple deed daar voor de derde keer mee. Ook vanwege hun speciale band met Montreux door het nummer "Smoke on the water". Deep Purple heeft ook zijn eigen monument aan de boulevard in Montreux. The film begins with scene setting clips of Burma, the legendary Aung San Sui Kyi and legitimate leader of Burma, who figureheaded led the struggle against the vicious military dictatorship even from prison. Amid the visually stunning temples, the colourful Burmese countryside and jungle, we focus in on an area near the Thai border, where hundreds of thousands of an ethnic minority, the Karen, hide. In 1992 TOTAL and UNOCAL do a deal with the military dictatorship to run a gas pipeline from the Andaman Sea through Burma to Thailand. The dictatorship provide 'security' by massacres of the villagers, using rape and torture and forcing them to work on construction as slaves (at gunpoint). Kaneva's award-winning film is remarkable in many ways, but chiefly as it tells the story of one man, Ka Hsaw Wa, an activist whose life was changed as young man when he came across the dead body of a young woman, her nipple cut off and a tree trunk rammed in her vagina. Ka Hsaw Wa dedicated his life to human rights activism, speaking fluent English and Burmese, dodging back and forth as he plays cat-and-mouse with the border guards, marrying another right worker and even raising a family. When he goes into difficult areas of the jungle, he takes a gun with a single bullet - to commit suicide if captured (to avoid torture). Total Denial is no dry courtroom drama (although there is plenty of courtroom tension later on). We see the colour and bustling life of people on both sides of the Thai-Burmese border. Their optimism and love of life, the children singing, even after they have been burnt out of their homes and forced to flee five times. The interviewers speak to eye-witnesses of brutal crimes and also see first hand the scars and wounds of people forced to work as slavery. (At one point the interviewer almost breaks down, speaking to a defector-soldier who corroborates the atrocities of colleagues but also confesses how he was forced to join the army.) Several NGO workers are interviewed, also giving eye-witness accounts of murder.
