Things don't get any better with the release of Carnival Games: Mini-Golf, which isn't anywhere near as fun as a good day on a real kiddie course, due to wonky controls, a dearth of goofy holes to play, and lackluster visuals and sound. A lot of design deficiencies underline the game's bargain-basement production values. Just about everything here seems cut-rate, with the biggest problem being unresponsive Wii controls. The game attempts to mimic swinging a putter by having you pull back and push forward with the Wii Remote, but the sensitivity is so dulled down that short movements aren't registered. So instead of applying a fine touch like you would when using a real minigolf putter, you have to yank the remote back and then slam it forward hard like you were driving for distance on a par-five hole at Pebble Beach. Putting is a delicate art, yet here it comes with all the finesse of a two-by-four. Hole design is another shortcoming. Carnival Games: Mini-Golf comes with just nine course themes, and each features only three holes to play. The themes themselves are nicely mixed up, taking in the usual minigolf concepts, such as fairy tales, barnyards, medieval knights, and haunted houses, but even this variety can't compensate for the small number of holes. Even worse, these holes are broken up into three different types that don't play much like real minigolf. Trick holes require you to figure out some kind of trick to score a hole in one, such as bouncing the ball off a wall or triggering an exploding barrel or something equally ridiculous to cause the ball to carom into the hole. You need to get really lucky and hit a precise shot here, which isn't easy to accomplish because of the gawky controls. Challenge holes are somewhat similar, although at least here you're allowed multiple shots to pull off some wacky objective like cracking a bunch of giant chicken eggs. Only the adventure holes play out like real minigolf, and these are so lengthy and convoluted that you have to play them through a few times and learn them like puzzles before you have a chance of beating them in a reasonable number of strokes. All hole types are further loaded down with extra arcade gimmicks that get in the way of playing minigolf. Instead of trying to putt past crazy obstacles, you have to deal with a lot of visual glitz and impossible architecture. Every hole is also strewn with bonus and penalty coins that you can use to buy clothing and other accoutrements for your golfer and to unlock special goodies on the courses. Forget about outfitting your avatar with any funky plaid golfing pants, though, because clothing is insanely priced. You would have to grind a course for hours to come up with the coins necessary to buy something as basic as a T-shirt. A puzzle piece is also earned every time you finish a hole at par or under. If you collect them all on each course, you'll receive a special putter based on the theme. The modes of play are really stripped down. You can play either solo or against your carnival host, Barker, and with up to four people on a single Wii, but golf-game staples such as tournament play are missing in action. Visuals and sound are bargain-bin in quality. Course graphics are nicely cartoony and imaginative, although the big-time jaggies all over the place pretty much wreck the appeal of the eye candy. Sound is limited; characters speak in a gibberish dialect, and the same boings and bangs of the ball rattling around the courses are repeated over and over. Barker himself is one of the most obnoxious characters you'll encounter in a game. He speaks with an over-the-top cadence about as pleasing to the ear as fingernails on a blackboard and taunts you in matches after pulling off shots that the lousy controls render impossible for you to match. So play solo or risk the temptation of throwing your Will Remote at the TV. Carnival Games: Mini-Golf just whets your appetite for a real minigolf game that makes proper use of the motion-sensing controls of the Wii Remote. The Wii needs a better and more competent treatment of minigolf that deals with the real sport, minus all the gimmicky junk that gets between you and your putter. (Less)

Description: I read a very short story that I wrote in a couple of minutes. I doubt that I'll be expanding upon it, but the general idea is that aliens (starkind) came to Earth and the humans took them captive and stole their technology and tortured them of their knowledge. The little song is an example of the humans' tales of the starkind. The song and story are below as well: "Sing the praise of the moonless night Keep the memory and hold it high Starkind have come and will come again to be sure So sing the songs and keep the memory until the moon be obscured" Darkness. I am trapped in it. Decay. I can smell the rotting corpses of my kin. A stream of light comes, shooting through this room, this prison. I feel I must explore this, but my instincts beg me to leave well enough alone. I submit to my cowardice and like a child, I bring my knees to my chest and rest my head. I silently wish for this moment to pass quickly. I know my fate. I know that I shall remain here within these walls for my life's duration. I let out a sigh as the light fades away. I am relieved, but a small part of me yearns for the light. Against my instincts, I want for the light to revisit me. This desire fills me, holds me hostge, until I finally fall asleep. Awake. I wish I were not. I wish I did not suffer through these endless hours of consciousness. Is it not enough that I was made to watch my people die? Was it not torturous enough that I be forced to see my kinsmen eviscerated, all the while my captors rejoicing in the bloody spectacle? These people, these monsters, their cruelty knows no bounds. We only came to offer our help. We only wanted to bring them peace. Remember. A thought strikes me. A remembrance of something I had tried to forget. One of their stories. They told stories set to delightful noise. They were about me, or at least my kin. So happy and full of reverence. They celebrated our coming. Told of times before now, when my kind had come into their lands. Of how we helped them by giving great gifts and knowledge. I understand now what they meant. They took these gifts. They acquired our knowledge, not through willful transference, but through our screams of agony and pain. They speak of us as if we are gods, but they treat us in ways not fit for the lowest of creatures. I remember my mother's face. Smooth and pale. Not even a blemish of old age. She truly was a beauty. I sometimes think of her, but I regret it when I do. For all I can see is how they took that face from her. They tore it off while I was made to watch. Her own son. And they made me watch. The light has come back again. I begin to draw back into the darkness, but I halt. My rage is surfaced, my thirst for action arisen. I stand, my legs unsure of themselves. It has been far too long since I last stood. "Light bearer!" I try to scream, but my voice has not been used for months. I move towards the light. It is difficult. With every step, I crush bones underfoot. They belong to my father and two brothers. "You will answer me." I find my voice, my courage, it is not something I have found before this moment. The light streams through a hole in the wall. I slam my arm against it to no avail. It does not budge nor creak. I am too weak to be it's match. I bring my hand to the hole and without any other thoughts of caution or cowardice, I reach into the light. I feel something. My hand, it touches something cool and hard. I try to draw it back, but something holds it. "Reward my curiousity with pain if you must. I will not draw my hand away willingly." I say it with confidence. A hand grabs my own and squeezes hard. I am weak of body so the pain is great. I do not draw my hand back. My captor is made to force my hand back through the hole and into my prison. The hole is sealed, but I smile. I am pained by this injury, but I have found hope. I have found a will to live once again. I will die one day and it will be by the hands of my captors. This I am sure of. But they will not take my life without a fight. And they will never take away my courage again. (Less)

Tiffany loved seeing Joe smile again and every time he would look over to Sarah he would do just that. Sam was setting up the table and finally called everyone for dinner. They had sarah say grace and were talking about the up coming tour. Just then nick slowly made his way into the dining room with the rest of them. He looked over at tiff with sad eyes. When she saw him she rolled her eyes and put down her fork. Tiff: may I be excused? Joe: tiff. Tiff: I'm sorry. I just lost my appetite. Sam: [sad] sure Hun. Go ahead. Tiff: I'm sorry Sam. [Tiff brushed by nick and made her way upstairs everyone heard her door slam.] Sarah: [leaned in to Joe and whispered] did I miss something? Joe: I'll tell ya later. Nick: I guess I deserved that. Kevin: ya think. Sam: its ok nick. Just have a seat. here's a plate. Nick: thanks Sam. They all ate dinner and had a conversation about the up coming tour. Nick sat quietly and hardly touched his food. When they finished eating the boys cleaned up while the girls sat in the living room. Nick: I should go talk to her. Joe: just don't be a jerk. Nick: I wont. I had some time to think. Kevin: here take her this plate of food. Joe: yeah it will work. If you came to talk to me with a plate of food I would totally listen. Nick: I bet you would. Wish me luck guys. Joe: you need more than luck. Nick slowly made his way upstairs. So many emotions and thoughts ran through him. He thought about what Joe told him. He felt mad, betrayed, guilty, sad. He didn't know what to do. What he did know is that he shouldn't have acted that way towards tiffany. He finally got to her door and softly knocked.
