Action shots in a natural setting of a wild, white (piebald) Virginia White-tailed buck. This rare, unusual animal was photographed several times on our farm.
At least 6 other white deer were seen at different times in the same area. One was pure white, about a foot taller than the other deer, and had a huge rack. Another deer had a large band or belt of white fur around its middle like a Poland China hog. Its twin was white, but the only time I filmed the white twin was in a split second as it jumped behind a tree (it had been standing by the banded deer and their mother). A white fawn was seen once. Around 30 years ago, many area people saw a white deer with a black spot. A sixth white deer was seen and photographed along our river valley (Alum Creek, in Ohio).
This deer also had a sort of Roman nose -- one with an enlargement in the front of the face - that some of the deer in the area had. I doubt that inbreeding caused this whiteness, because these were wild deer. There were many deer in the area at that time. Now with development, there are fewer deer and fewer white deer.

Black deer are considered rarer than white deer. No black deer have been reported, but some of our white ones have black spots, rather than the normal brownish tone of deer fur. White deer and white buffalo figure prominently in the legends of people throughout the world. Sometimes these animals are considered ghosts and at other times presage an omen. The Chickasaw, Seneca, Apache, Aztec, Cheyenne, Lenca, Cherokee, Pawnee, Sioux, Shasta, Algonquin, Pawnee, Sioux, Lakota and many other groups have legends about white deer. Such animals are so strange in appearance that they immediately capture interest and make people watch for them. (These were wild deer on our farm taped by Scott and extracted from longer films.)
**Some of the world's largest bucks live in Ohio. Some of its world champion bucks have Boone and Crockett scores of over 300 points. Ohio's Beatty Buck may be the (or among the) largest ever taken by a hunter. That title of the largest whitetail, ever, in the record books belongs to the "Missouri Monarch," a 333-7/8 buck found dead on the side of a road in 1982 near St. Louis. In second place is the legendary "Hole in the Horn," found dead in Ohio in 1940, however, many whitetail experts think that it is actually the largest set of whitetail deer antlers in history. It may be the most famous whitetail known.
The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 400 pounds and the female up to 175 pounds. Males of one year or older have antlers. Young bucks with very small antlers are called button bucks. When the antlers begin to grow in the late spring, they are covered with a very vascular tissue known as velvet or moss. This drops off later. The Boone & Crockett scoring system is used to rate antlers or racks. Bucks shed their antlers at the end of breeding season (rut). Some female deer also have antlers. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare
Deer have an amazing assortment of communicative signs. Approximately 100 different vocalizations have been recorded, such as tending grunts, dominant grunts, bleats, and many others. They make extensive use of sign language. The whitetail is found throughout most of the U.S., southern Canada, Central America, and in the northern portions of South America. It is a generalist, which can adapt to a wide variety of habitats, including woodland, open savanna, and even sage areas. (Less)

One is a predator and one is prey, thus, they generally avoid each other. Here wild deer watch a coyote eat its prey. The coyote was eating a large animal, possibly a deer. The deer were in the background along the tree line watching it. It passed by them when it left. They remained in the same place and several didn't even stand up. Several times the coyote startled and looked toward tree line - it likely heard sounds from deer in background. The coyote (Canis latrans) is also called the prairie wolf. It is a mammal belonging to the order carnivora and related to the domestic dog. They range from Panama through Canada. The name coyote came from Mexican Spanish. The Latin name means barking dog. Nineteen subspecies exist. Its fur is grayish-brown to yellowish-brown and can be black or white. Most deer fights are friendly. Bucks need to learn to fight and practice on trees, shrubs, and their companions. When bucks, which associate and are in the same group, go into rut, they practice fight with companions. These bucks were learning how to use their antlers - such as what positions to assume and how to position antlers. At one point in this film their antlers became locked and they needed to separate them. The second time it appeared that they feared their antlers might have gotten entangled they both jerked away (at the end of the video). Bucks appeared to groom each other while fighting. The deer on the right appears to be a 10-point buck. (From another segment of the film, its right antler is at least a 5-pt. and the left, at least a 4-pt. with possibly a small pt. near the tip). The deer on the left has anters that are much thicker at the base than those of the deer on the left, but not as long as they should be and they appear to have been broken off. It is likely this deer would have had a much larger rack-perhaps a 12-point or more. The deer on the left also appears to be darker and larger. The background noise is a farm tractor. Wild animals often don't fear farm equipment and this behavior enabled me to get quite close to them. (These were wild deer in a natural setting - on our farm taped by Scott and extracted from a longer film.) The deer had problems positioning their antlers, which became locked several times because the one had damaged antlers. It had one large spot and smaller white spots on its back. Its antlers were very widespread and it appeared that when they were fully grown, it would be a huge rack.
Using a golf cart to watch big deer. Lots of large deer were seen. Several had 8-10 pt. antlers and it was just the beginning of the growth season.
Piebald, albino, "white," and "black" whitetail deer are very rare. In Bolder Junction, Wis., a man once photographed 3 albino deer standing together. The odds of doing this in wild deer have been calculated as astronomical -- 1 in 79 billion. Such calculations are based on assumptions. For example, the odds of finding an albino deer are often calculated as 1 in 30,000. Less than 1 % of whitetail deer are piebald. However seeing either a wild piebald or an albino deer is considered a once in a lifetime experience.

This video shows an episode in the life of an injured deer. Also shows close-up shots of wild deer and the grace and power of the whitetail deer as they leap over a high wire fence clearing the barbed wire above it.
Filmed 07.12.12, after hunting season. The injured deer actually was seen over a period of years. He is shown again in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6s4TrFLBQ
He must have had a bad head injury, because he seemed to grow deformed antlers every year. Possibly this saved him from being shot. On 08.02.28, I saw the injured deer - still alive, but without antlers. He is lived for several years.
This video also shows deer that are very interested in the same cat as in the above video.

The male white-tailed deer, or buck (Odocoileus virginianus - normally called the whitetail), can weigh up to around 500 pounds http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:7cLce5HsdasJ:espn.go.com/outdoors/hunting/s/h_deer_forecast05_MN.html+heaviest+whitetail&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us
and the female up to 175 pounds. The piebald or white deer, a deer having more white than normal but not an albino, is very rare.

It is extremely rare to film wild coyotes and deer at the same time, and even for difficult to film them interacting, as shown here. They are natural enemies and generally avoid each other.
Part 1: Six deer including bucks and fawns watch coyotes. As one coyote approaches the deer run away, but soon a curious deer approaches the coyote. The coyote then runs into the woods. Soon a coyote comes back out of the woods. The deer have approached quite closely, but then keep their distance.
Normally an experienced adult deer is not too fearful of a coyote, but there were younger deer in the group that needed defending. A coyote will definitely kill a young deer. Both the coyotes and deer were curious, but did not approach each other very closely. The coyotes were young coyotes.
Part II: the coyote runs across a small valley from the group of deer and finds an animal hole. The coyote leaps and pounces, and then begins to dig. The white tip of its tail is visible wagging swiftly. It makes a kill and eats it.
It then runs toward the deer. The deer cluster together as animals sometimes do when they expect an attack. But the coyote then vears off and begins to hunt.
After a while, its eyes began to reflect my infrared camera light and I thought it was watching me. It continued to mull around glancing in my direction and then sat down. Suddenly it shot out in my direction and I thought it was after me, but I stayed there. Then I realized the other coyote had arrived. The two coyotes began to play.
The deer continued to watch from a distance and did not approach again. Video taped in infrared light. (Filmed by Scott on the farm and excerpted from a longer film.) Because this sequence was filmed for over an hour, it was added to Youtube in several parts:
