Yes you can get a decent clean sound out of an unmodded Marshall 4203. Yes you can play funk with a Morley Bad Horsey 1 wah pedal. User reviews claim otherwise, you decide. (And yes you can play high gain modern wah solos with a Dunlop Crybaby GCB-95.)
I don't work for these companies. I couldn't find any Marshall 4203 clips nor any clean Bad Horsie clips anywhere before I gambled on my purchases, so here you go.
Speaker is to the far left in the cab so the mic is an inch or two from the left edge of the speaker just slightly off axis toward the dome. I did no mic testing for anything but level, I slapped the mic right there and never moved it. God love the SM57.
The mic by the desk picking up my comments (and the opening voiceover) is a Studio Projects C1 large diaphragm condenser. I muted that track during the guitar bits so all you hear is SM57.
If you're obsessed with sparkling glassy clean amp sounds that bring a tear to your eye (Fender Twin) you won't be knocked out by this amp, but it's a perfectly serviceable clean sound for the rest of us. Many people at harmony-central user review site swear by the C13 mod (clipping the capacitor, see harmony-central dot com for details in some reviews), but guys in the 3203 reviews say the modification ruins the gain channel. You could install a toggle switch on that cap. But I don't mind the clean channel on this amp; I do turn down the treble and mid, and it's against my nature to turn down the mid, but on this amp it's true that the mid is pretty high and harsh on the clean channel.
I do wish I had included some midgain sounds, maybe next time. The gain sound here is with the boost channel preamp knob all the way up. This thing will bellow like a happy moose when the master's cranked, and as well through a 4x12, 6x10 (Acoustic 104), 1x10 closed back Earcandy with a Jensen Mod 50, or any other cab.
A great blues combo, every kind of tone or gain structure you'd ever want. I'm in love with the single tone control on the boost channel, that channel is fantastic at many volume, gain, and tone settings.
One more thing: shorty after I put this video on youtube I pulled it to fix a caption, and therefore lost all existing comments when I put it back on--but I'm compelled to preserve here my favorite one of those early comments...it read simply and eloquently for all posterity: "Nice shoes wank face."
You can hear me play actual songs on my record--visit my youtube page for details. On the song "Rocket Pogo" I played this same Strat Plus when it had a no-name salvage humbucker in the bridge, using this very Crybaby wah prominently. The whole album was done with this Strat, mainly through a Lab Series L5 amp through the dirty channel. If download any of the tunes or buy the whole CD, send me a note if you want a breakdown of what I played on which tunes.
On this gear demo video:
Guitars:
2001 Gibson Les Paul Studio Plus
neck pickup: Gibson '57 Classic
bridge: '57 Classic Plus
1991 Fender U.S.A. Strat Plus
Fender-Lace Sensor pickups:
neck/middle: gold
bridge: silver
Amp:
1989 Marshall model 4203 (Artist 30)
1x12 combo
no modifications
Groove Tubes (GTEL34R, 5's)
Normal channel:
treble & mid 1.5, bass 7, vol 2
Boost: tone 5, gain 10, vol 2
Wah pedals:
Early '80's Dunlop Crybaby GCB-95
(yes early 80's, the caption is wrong in the video).
Morley Bad Horsie 1 (VAI-1). Auto-off set to instantaneous. You can open the pedal and adjust a pot for up to 3 seconds of delay before the effect shuts off. Many people set it for about 1/2 second delay so if you rock your foot back too far in the middle of a solo the effect doesn't shut off. I'm not finding that to be a problem, there's a good bit of travel in the low end of the sweep before you hit bottom, and even if you do you're back in action as soon as you rock your foot forward.
Recording chain:
Shure SM57 mic to Behringer UB1202 board to
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 sound card to e-Machines PC hard drive. Edited with Cool Edit Pro 2.0, no EQ or effects in recording/mixdown. (Less)

To many young fans today, this isn't exactly a historical game - and for good reason. In the context of basketball history, not many regular season games are truly memorable, classic, or historical. But many also become classics in their own right, for records made, or for final meetings. This one has a little mix of everything - including Toronto's largest ever crowd of over 36,000 fans at the Sky Dome. In their previous meeting of the '95-'96 season Michael was the acclaimed "Raptor killer", sinking the Raptors and posting 14 fourth quarter points. In this game, he posts 36 points on 63.6% shooting (14-22) with 15 in the fourth quarter. Amazingly, 13 of his 15 fourth quarter points come in the last 4 minutes and 20 seconds of playing time. These were the games of his post-baseball career (seemingly happened a lot in 95-96) that made you wish his team wasn't as great as it was, just so you could see him continue to light it up all game long. Unfortunately, Michael never did anything that wasn't necessary. The expansion team, Toronto Raptors, face off against Michael Jordan and a Bulls team that went on to win an all time NBA record of 72 regular season wins. But what the 36,131 fans that packed the Sky Dome on this night may not realise, is that they were watching a story filled with subplots unfold upon the hardwood of a basketball court. Michael Jordan. Alvin Robertson. Damon Stoudamire. Chicago Bulls. Toronto Raptors. 72. 8. What people don't realise, though, is that the Raptors that year were actually stacked with talent that could do harm in any league of any era had they have had the correct team chemistry, confidence, and playing time required to do so. Damon Stoudamire was a rookie, who, in my opinion is one of the most underrated PG talents of our generation. In the 95-96 season, he went on to win ROY and set multiple records including a then record 133 3PT FG's for a rookie. He was also chasing second place for most assists by a rookie, on the tail of Oscar Robertson. He went on to post 19.0ppg and 9.3apg (something that the top PGs of the league today fail to do), while setting multiple franchise records for the Toronto Raptors that still stand today, including most assists by a player (19). In this game, he seemed to be having a shoot out with Steve Kerr and Michael Jordan. Damon posted 30 points, 11 assists and went 6-8 from three point land. Then there's the subplot of Michael vs. Robertson. Great friends, old team mates ('84 olympics), and fierce competitors. History has it, that this would be the last time either of the old timers would face off against each other in professional competition (Robertson retired after '96). For those of you who don't know much about Alvin Robertson, he's perhaps one of the greatest perimiter, roaming, and lock down defenders to ever play the game. He's 1st all-time in steals per game, and he has an anticipation that many see players such as Bruce Bowen to have today. It's no coincidence or conspiracy that he was named DPOY in '85-'86. While both players here are far past their athletic and statistical prime (Jordan 33, Alvin 34), they don't fail to impress and excite. Alvin plays Jordan's turnarounds like only few could; they battle hard for position and trash talk each other all night long. It's also notable that Alvin averaged 2.2 steals per game this season, which would've been good enough for first place in 06-07. Of course, Michael was no defensive slouch either ;), coincidentally averaging 2.2spg. With far too much already said... I'll leave the game to unfold. Enjoy. (Less)

ATLANTA -- As streamers poured from the rafters at Philips Arena, Marvin Williams stood at center court with arms folded, looking defiant, even with a sore knee. Zaza Pachulia grabbed a microphone and summed up this improbable series.
"We're going to Game 7! Woooooooooo!" Pachulia screamed.
Game 7, indeed.
Who would have believed it?
Refusing to let go of their first trip to the playoffs in nine years, the Hawks forced an improbable deciding game with the Boston Celtics when Joe Johnson hit a crucial 3-pointer with 1:07 remaining and Atlanta held on for a 103-100 victory Friday night.
The Hawks, just 37-45 during the regular season, have now beaten the Celtics three times in the space of a week to set up a deciding game in a series that was supposed to be a sweep. After all, Boston went an NBA-leading 66-16 and defeated Atlanta in all three meetings before the playoffs.
But, against all odds, the Hawks are heading to Boston for Game 7 on Sunday.
"Seven! Seven! Seven!" chanted the record crowd of 20,425 at Philips Arena.
The Celtics are still the obvious favorite, having won all three games at their place by an average of 22 points. But the Hawks have lasted longer than anyone would have expected.
"I feel very good," said Pachulia, a little-used center who's making quite an impact in this series. "You've got to be able to win on the road. We've lost three in a row. We should be able to win one up there. It would be sad if we lost four in a row."
The Celtics looked as shell-shocked as anyone. Paul Pierce fouled out and spent the final minutes on the bench with a towel draped over his head, barely able to watch.
"It's definitely a dream," Atlanta's Josh Smith said. "But we weren't going to be satisfied with just making the playoffs."
Williams led the Hawks with 18 points despite missing much of the fourth quarter with a sprained left knee. Kevin Garnett had 22 for the Celtics and Ray Allen added 20, but Pierce -- the other member of Boston's Big Three -- fouled out on a disputed call with 4:44 remaining.
The Celtics had a chance after pounding the boards for five chances on one possession before Kendrick Perkins was hacked by Al Horford. Perkins made both free throws with 1:32 left to pull Boston within 97-95.
Johnson, who went to the final period with just seven points on 3-of-9 shooting, came alive in the fourth. He saved his biggest shot for the end, getting James Posey in the air with a pump fake before hitting Atlanta's only 3-pointer of the game to make it 100-95.
"I took a few dribbles," Johnson said. "I just wanted to get a good look. I felt like it would go in when it left my hand."
Posey got Johnson back by making a tough 3 from the wing with 48 seconds left, and the Celtics had a chance when Johnson missed a runner in the lane.
Wanting to finish off the pesky Hawks, the Celtics drew up a play to give Allen a look from beyond the arc. He missed, though; Johnson grabbed the rebound, was fouled and hit two free throws with 10.6 seconds left.
After a quick basket by Garnett, Mike Bibby made only one of two free throws with 7.4 seconds to go, giving the Celtics a shot at forcing overtime. But the Hawks kept the ball from Allen and Posey, forcing Rajon Rondo to launch a long 3 that didn't even hit the rim as the horn sounded.
For the third time in the series, streamers poured from the Philips Arena rafters.
"I've played 13 years, and I've been here every year for 13 years," Garnett said. "This is the first time I've seen this atmosphere like this (in Atlanta). That's the intensity of the playoffs."
But the Celtics worked all season to get the home-court advantage throughout the playoffs.
Next up, Game 7 in Beantown.
"Our confidence is definitely not shaken," Garnett insisted.
Pierce has apparently seen enough of Atlanta. He had already cleared out of the locker room by the time reporters were let him. The only thing left behind was a banana peel.
"We put ourselves in this situation," Posey said. "For one of these teams, it's going to be their last game. Just expect anything and everything."
After the Hawks scored the first basket, Boston led until early in the fourth. The Celtics were up by 12 in the second and nine in the third, looking to finally put away Atlanta.
But, as they did when falling behind in Game 4, the Hawks refused to fold.
They finally reclaimed the lead with just over 11 minutes remaining, when Williams soared for the rebound of Bibby's missed 3 and laid it in to put the Hawks ahead 83-82.
From there, the teams went back and forth until a crucial play knocked out Pierce and gave the Hawks some breathing room. (Less)

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay For their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.
But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.
Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a Wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and Pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars--all in the same day.
Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back Mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. On a bike. Makes Taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?
And what has Rick done for his father? Not much--except save his life. This love story began in Winchester , Mass. , 43 years ago, when Rick Was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him Brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.
"He'll be a vegetable the rest of his life;'' Dick says doctors told him And his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. ``Put him in an Institution.''
But the Hoyts weren't buying it. They noticed the way Rick's eyes Followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the Engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was Anything to help the boy communicate. ``No way,'' Dick says he was told. ``There's nothing going on in his brain.''
"Tell him a joke,'' Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a Lot was going on in his brain. Rigged up with a computer that allowed Him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his Head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? ``Go Bruins!'' And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the School organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, ``Dad, I want To do that.''
Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described ``porker'' who never ran More than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he Tried. ``Then it was me who was handicapped,'' Dick says. ``I was sore For two weeks.''
That day changed Rick's life. ``Dad,'' he typed, ``when we were running, It felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!''
And that sentence changed Dick's life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly Shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.
``No way,'' Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren't quite a Single runner, and they weren't quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few Years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then They found a way to get into the race Officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the Qualifying time for Boston the following year.
Then somebody said, ``Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?''
How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he Was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick Tried.
Now they've done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii . It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud Getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don't you Think?
Hey, Dick, why not see how you'd do on your own? ``No way,'' he says. Dick does it purely for ``the awesome feeling'' he gets seeing Rick with A cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.
This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best Time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992--only 35 minutes off the world Record, which, in case you don't keep track of these things, happens to Be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the Time.
``No question about it,'' Rick types. ``My dad is the Father of the Century.''
And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a Mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries Was 95% clogged. ``If you hadn't been in such great shape,'' One doctor told him, ``you probably would've died 15 years ago.'' So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other's life.
Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass. , always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father's Day.
That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.
``The thing I'd most like,'' Rick types, ``is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.'' (Less)

That day changed Rick's life. ``Dad,'' he typed, ``when we were running, It felt like I wasn't disabled anymore!'' And that sentence changed Dick's life. Then somebody said, ``Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?'' How's a guy who never learned to swim and hadn't ridden a bike since he Was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? ``My dad is the Father of the Century.'' And Dick got something else out of all this too. ``The thing I'd most like,'' Rick types, ``is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.'' Jazz fans had barely started booing Kobe Bryant before he and the Lakers made nine of their first 10 shots and were up by 20 before the end of the first quarter. Los Angeles held off every Utah rally from there and won 106-95 on Thursday night, ending the Jazz's 19-game home winning streak. "The important thing for us is to get off to a good start. We were able to do that and keep the crowd out of it for the most part,'' said Bryant, who scored 27 as the Lakers finished a four-game road trip 2-2 and pulled slightly ahead of New Orleans for the best record in the Western Conference. Lamar Odom had 21 points and 12 rebounds, Derek Fisher added 11 points and Vladimir Radmanovic scored 13 for the Lakers, who are the first team to win in Utah in 2008. Utah's home winning streak ended with a pretty big thud as the Jazz were never able to get closer than 10 until the final few minutes. "They went out and buried us right away,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. The Jazz got within eight points down the stretch, but the Lakers didn't let them any closer. One Utah fan marred the already ugly loss by throwing a beer on the court after a dunk by Odom with 21 seconds left. Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 15 rebounds and Deron Williams had 26 points and 12 assists for Utah. Andrei Kirilenko scored 15 points, Ronnie Brewer had 12 and Mehmet Okur 10. Utah hadn't lost at home since Boston won here 104-98 on Dec. 29. The winning streak tied the longest in franchise history and the Jazz could have set a new mark against the team Jazz fans dislike the most. Bryant shouldered the usual boos and by the end the remaining fans were mostly wearing gold and purple and chanting "M-V-P!'' Bryant also had eight rebounds and seven assists. "I think we knew how tough they are at home and what kind of energy they would come out with,'' Bryant said. Los Angeles is still without Pau Gasol (ankle) and Andrew Bynum (knee), but didn't need much more than the starting lineup. Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic scored 11 each for the Lakers, who outscored the Jazz reserves 25-9. Los Angeles had Utah scrambling from the beginning, going 15-for-20 in the first quarter and shutting down every mini-run the Jazz made until it was too late. Every time Utah made a small dent in the lead, the Lakers answered with a 3-pointer. Los Angeles finished 10-for-22 from beyond-the-arc. The Jazz made a few mini-runs to cut into the lead, but the Lakers never let Utah put together one big push. "We got them in a situation where things weren't working well for them on the offensive end,'' Los Angeles coach Phil Jackson said. "They were a little bit out of sync.'' The Jazz never got closer than 11 until Boozer's turnaround jumper cut the lead to 94-84 with 4:32 remaining. Bryant followed that with a 22-foot jumper, but fouled Williams on a 3-pointer at the other end. Williams made the free throw to cut the lead to 96-88, but Bryant quickly stopped the momentum with a dunk. "We were rolling at that point. We came back, made a little bit of a run, and then Kobe started hitting some tough shots,'' Boozer said. Fisher spent last season with the Jazz before asking out of his contract for family reasons. He was booed loudly when the Lakers played here in November, but got a warmer welcome Thursday night. Bryant said the Lakers hadn't forgotten the way Fisher was received last time. "Derek's the type of guy that's not going to say anything, but I'll say it for him. He took it personally tonight and we wanted to send a message,'' Bryant said. (Less)

When KULT Records' A&R first heard ALAN T's current KULT Records single entitled "Here In Spirit" (which vocals say: I am here in spirits, coming directly from the speaker) could not but think of NYLX's "Goosebumps" by Danny Tenaglia and the Underground Sounds of Lisbon (aka DJ Vibe & Rui De Silva) the classic from 1998 with vocals by unlikely Austrian Diva LULA....wondering what LULA would say if she heard someone else in her space...the speaker! Fate would have it that Eddie Cumana from KULT had been talking with LULA to do a song for KULT right about the same time! So KULT's A&R played LULA the song of ALAN T and asked her if she had anything to say about ALAN coming for her throne and if she wanted to do a song together with ALAN T...LULA loved the idea and recorded some vocals which were sent to ALAN who recorded some vocals and sent it to Eddie and then Eddie went to cooking with what he had and the battle for the speaker "There is only one" was born. Alan T brought the record the same night Eddie sent it the demo mix to him and gave it to Danny (Tenaglia) who played the song 5 times that very same night coupled with announcements of how he had not been so excited about a record in a very long time! And so the buzz has began and with only superstars being serviced & there is a video in the works and this song already promises to be on the most talked about songs at the WMC. With support from Behrouz, DJ Vibe, Danny Tenaglia, Victor Calderone, Superchumbo, Chus & Ceballo, Ralph Falcon, Rui De Silva, DJ Boris, Luca Ricci and a few other key dj's, "There Is Only One" is bound to break some speakers! "There Is Only One" is produced by Eddie Cumana of DYNAMIX. Eddie Cumana has enjoyed much US Radio success, multiple Billboard Number Ones and IDMA nominations for Best House Record of the Year (2000/2006) and various radio records as well as having executed official remixer for Pink, Cindy Lauper, and Toni Braxton amongst many others under his various monikers and is KULT's shining star. With "There Is Only One" Eddie Cumana went back to his roots and took it underground, where he likes it best. With Lula vs Alan T "There Is Only One," Eddie Cumana shows off his skills in all directions from his ingeniously crafted acapella to his crazy beats. For the first mix, Eddie sampled Tibal Tarante's beats on Tibal's mix of Lula "Fire & Burn" also on KULT Records to sequence his vocal construction and ended up sending that mock up mix off to ALAN T who gave it to Danny Tenaglia and the rest is history...this mash up is making it in the package! The other 2 mixes are a variation of the same direction "This is how I heard this," Eddie says..."I am glad people are liking it" For more information regarding KULT Records, KULT Records recording artists, or KULT Records music feel free to click any of the following links: -- www.kult.com www.kultrecords.com www.myspace.com/kultrecords www.beatport.com/labels/kult ABOUT KULT Records Producers such as Deep Swing, Kevin Yost, Lenny Fontana, Cricco Castelli, 95 North, Sheamus Haji, Dynamix, Robbie Rivera, Danny Morales , BPT and many others, have seen the start of the musical careers through their earliest releases on KULT Records [For many of the above mentioned, their first releases ever published, were on KULT]. Note that for all practical purposes, as long as you can pull off the last jump without a ring trail and with time stopped, Cannon's Core 1 and 3 are the same. For one you go down at the end, and for the other you go up, but it's not like time is ticking or anything.
That said, the previous unified 1-3 record (1:15.94) was set just under a year ago, and I decided I wanted to try another run at the level, this time using the new trick I unveiled in the A-button challenge video for CC1, with the goal of getting closer to (or possibly under) 1:15.
After a short bit of experimentation, I found out that unfortunately, the new route wasn't going to be good for saving any time. But since I already had a personal record through three parts, I wasn't just going to throw that much of the run away. Instead, while I still had the old route available as a backup plan, I thought I'd spend a bit more time just looking around to see what was possible, and...the rest is history, they say.
While it's still true that the break out at the top is, on its own, no faster than breaking up through the acid room, that fact that you start higher up leaves you in better position for another timesaver. The "normal" path for Knuckles' CC starts: dive down to stop time, get back up to go past a laser wall, hit a switch to kill another set of lasers underwater, then dive down again, go past where the laser wall used to be, enter a room...That room has a time stop switch on its diagonal wall; somewhat relevant here is the fact that it's the longest-lasting switch in all of Knuckles' part, and extremely relevant is...the fact that you can activate this switch from OUT OF BOUNDS. Just get close to where the switch would be, on the other side, and you can stop time without getting sucked back in the wall! This lets you keep the time stop going all the way to the security door switch, cutting several seconds at once.
For those of you who want to try this at home, I will tell you that Knuckles' part alone took in excess of 4 hours to get right during this recording session, and the stress ended up killing two DVD-RWs from my rotation.
And for the first time in all my experience with Cannon's Core, I'm now truly wondering just how low a TAS of the level would be able to go. I can imagine as low as 1:02 might be possible, but I may not even be ready to try for as much even if the tools were available to me. (Less)

Bryant, (More) Kobe Bryant made most of the shots that mattered, which he didn't view as any great accomplishment.
That's because there was nary a hand in his face when he took them.
Bryant, celebrating what's expected to be his first NBA MVP award, converted six of his franchise playoff-record 21 foul shots in the fourth quarter, and the Los Angeles Lakers held off the Utah Jazz 109-98 Sunday to begin the second round of the playoffs.
Bryant finished with 38 points, six rebounds and seven assists, and the Lakers made it five straight victories to begin the postseason after winning eight of their last nine regular-season games to earn the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
"You've got to be able to knock those free throws down. They're open looks," said Bryant, who made his first 18 foul shots before missing two of his last five to finish 21-of-23. "It's my responsibility to knock them down."
The Lakers shot 38-of-46 from the foul line, while the Jazz went 22-of-30. The teams spent most of the final period going from one foul line to the other, with Los Angeles going 14-of-19 from the line and Utah 10-of-12. Twenty-four of the 60 personal fouls were called in the last 12 minutes.
"It's an incredible night to have 23 foul shots," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "I know that Utah's not going to be happy about it. We'll probably see about half that in the next game, if not less. So for him to do that, it was our biggest scoring threat of the night right there."
Utah coach Jerry Sloan said he didn't have a problem with Bryant's many trips to the foul line.
"They called them, he shot them, that's fine," Sloan said. "I can't do anything about that."
Regarding his team's defense, Sloan said: "It was very, very poor at best. [Fouls] are what you do when you try and bail out. I'd say that's very poor defense."
There were some other unexpected numbers. For one, the Jazz outrebounded the Lakers 58-41, with 25 of their rebounds at the offensive end. For another, Utah attempted 95 shots to match its regular-season high, but converted only 36 (37.9 percent).
"We had open shots, we couldn't make them," Sloan said.
"A lot of it was just their defense," said Deron Williams, who shot 5-for-18. "They pushed us outside farther than we wanted to go with our offense."
Derek Fisher, who played with the Jazz last season, guarded Williams for the most part and had a career playoff-high six steals to go with five points and six assists.
"I think probably what confused him was how old I am," the 33-year-old Fisher said, laughing. "When he fakes, I don't go for it because I can't react that fast so I end up stealing it from him."
Game 2 will be played Wednesday night before the best-of-seven series shifts to Utah for Games 3 and 4. Word leaked late Friday that Bryant had won his first Most Valuable Player award and he expressed his joy on Saturday. The NBA has declined comment, but Bryant is expected to receive the MVP trophy from commissioner David Stern before Game 2.
The "MVP! MVP!" chants from the capacity crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center began before the opening tip, with the volume increasing significantly when Bryant was introduced with the other Los Angeles starters.
Bryant, who shot 8-for-16 from the field, scored 24 points to help the Lakers take a 54-41 halftime lead, and although they were on top the rest of the way, there were some anxious moments down the stretch.
Pau Gasol added 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Lamar Odom had 16 points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 45 seconds to play, and Sasha Vujacic scored a career playoff-high 15 for the Lakers.
Forward Luke Walton, who shot 22-for-31 and averaged 14 points in the Lakers' sweep of Denver in the first round, played despite an upper respiratory infection and wasn't at his best, getting five points and three rebounds in 13 minutes.
Mehmet Okur had 21 points and a career playoff-high 19 rebounds for the Jazz. Carlos Boozer had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four assists before fouling out with 3:28 left, and Williams added 14 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.
The Lakers went ahead for good late in the first quarter and led 68-49 early in the third period before the Jazz outscored them 15-3 to get back in the game. It was 91-82 before a 3-pointer by Kyle Korver and a jumper by Ronnie Brewer made it 91-87 with 4:44 remaining.
That's as close as the Jazz would get.
A basket by Odom and a foul shot by Bryant made it 94-87 with 3:28 to go. The Jazz drew within five points on two free throws by Williams, but three baskets by Gasol in a span of 68 seconds put the game out of reach. (Less)
