Description: Back in 1980, as a teenager, I walked into the Local Cinema to see the movie "Private Benjamin" starring Goldie Hawn. At that time, it was usual for there to be a supporting film and in this case it was a movie called "Foul Play" also starring Goldie Hawn. I'd never heard anything about this film and so sat back to watch it with no expectations whatsoever. Boy was I in for a surprise. From the opening sounds of Barry Manilow singing "Ready To Take A Chance Again", to the on-screen charms and charisma of Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase, to the scene stealing moments with the late great Dudley Moore, "Foul Play" turned out to be a gem of a movie. It had everything..Romance, Comedy, Suspense, quirky characters, a car chase and an intriguing story based around the attempted assassination of the Pope. After the movie had finished, I would have been happy to have gone home but remembered that there was still the Main Feature to be watched. To be honest, I sat through most of "Private Benjamin" reminiscing about "Foul Play" and with the catchy tune "Ready To Take A Chance Again" still swirling around my head.
Thirty years later, I recently caught "Foul Play" on TV and it's still as funny and entertaining as it was back then, albeit through nostalgia tinted eyes. The film is just so unique. I mean how many films can boast having an Albino Assassin, a Bible selling Dwarf, a horny symphony conductor, a snake-owning karate-chopping senior citizen, two spinsters playing a blasphemous game of scrabble and a storyline that involves lost micro film and an attempt to assassinate the pope while visiting an operatic performance of "The Mikado" in San Francisco? Phew, who comes up with this stuff? And yet...it works. And it works hilariously well.
The score by Charles Fox is the icing on the cake. It is witty, suspensful, romantic and contains the above mentioned oscar nominated song "Ready to Take A Chance Again". It even manages to skillfully incorporate sections from "The Mikado" into the score during the finale.
"Foul Play" is a comic homage to Hitchcock. Not so much "The Man Who Knew Too Much" as "The Woman Who Knew Too Much". Although, having said that, Goldie Hawn knows little of what is going on and spends most of the film in dumb-founded confusion over why these things are happening to her.
If you get a chance to see "Foul Play", watch it and have a fun filled couple of hours.

After one long week of tests and x-rays, it was finally the day for Nat to go home.

Then he turned and started walking to the ferris wheel and for some reason I kept walking next to him. When he reached the short line he stepped into it, and I stopped walking and stood there.
