Obama: Closing Gitmo 'a challenge'
Barack Obama suggested he's not likely to actively pursue criminal charges against national security officials who were directly involved in unlawful interrogations or wire-tapping, and said it would be difficult to quickly close down Guantanamo Bay.
On Guantanamo — which he repeatedly promised to shutter during the campaign — Obama, in an interview on Sunday with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week," reiterated his intent to do just that but also sounded a pragmatic note.
"That's a challenge," the president-elect said about the prospect of closing down to the detainee facility within the first 100 days of taking office. "I think it's going to take some time and our legal teams are working in consultation with our national security apparatus as we speak to help design exactly what we need to do.
On the question of prosecuting crimes that may have been committed during the Bush presidency in the course of the war on terror, Obama continued the theme of "looking forward as opposed to backwards" he took on the campaign trail and reaffirmed since winning the presidency last November.
While aimed at attracting consensus from a broader electorate, the position is not exactly what many in the liberal base of his party would prefer.
As Stephanopoulos noted, the most asked question on Obama's own transition website relates to investigating the "crimes" of the Bush administration.
Asked if he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate such matters as warrantless wire-tapping and torture, Obama demurred.
"We're still evaluating how we're going to approach the whole issue of interrogations, detentions, and so forth," he said. "And obviously we're going to be looking at past practices, and I don't believe that anybody is above the law.

Pressed, Obama said twice more that he wanted to get "things right in the future, as opposed looking at what we got wrong in the past."
Asked specifically about the idea of a "9/11 Commission with independent subpoena power" to look at torture and warrantless wiretapping during the Bush years, Obama said, "We have not made final decisions, but my instinct is for us to focus on how do we make sure that moving forward we are doing the right thing. That doesn't mean that if somebody has blatantly broken the law, that they are above the law. But my orientation's going to be to move forward."

The following year, the government closed the paper, and Sihanouk's police publicly humiliated Khieu by undressing and photographing him in public - as Shawcross notes, "not the sort of humiliation that men forgive or forget." Yet the experience did not prevent Khieu from advocating cooperation with Sihanouk in order to promote a united front against United States activities in South Vietnam. As mentioned, Khieu Samphan, Hou Yuon, and Hu Nim tried to "work through the system" by joining the Sangkum and by accepting posts in the prince's government. Hardliners like Pol Pot, Ieng Sary, and Son Sen advocated resistance. In addition, Pol Pot wanted to break up the "enemy spy organizations" that allegedly were based in the urban areas. The one important working class group in pre-revolutionary Cambodia—laborers on large rubber plantations—traditionally had consisted mostly of Vietnamese emigrants and thus was politically suspect. Armed forces units personally loyal to Pol Pot, known as the "Unconditional Divisions," were a privileged group within the military. Given the severity of their revolutionary ideology, it is surprising that the highest ranks of the Khmer Rouge leadership exhibited a talent for cronyism that matched that of the Sihanouk-era elite. Pol Pot's wife, Khieu Ponnary, was head of the Association of Democratic Khmer Women and her younger sister, Khieu Thirith, served as minister of social action. These two women are considered among the half-dozen most powerful personalities in Democratic Kampuchea. Son Sen's wife, Yun Yat, served as minister for culture, education and learning. Several of Pol Pot's nephews and nieces were given jobs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. One of Ieng Sary's daughters was appointed head of the Calmette Hospital although she had not graduated from secondary school. A niece of Ieng Sary was given a job as English translator for Radio Phnom Penh although her fluency in the language was extremely limited. Family ties were important, both because of the culture and because of the leadership's intense secretiveness and distrust of outsiders, especially of pro-Vietnamese communists. For Sihanouk, as for the rest of the world, the true character of Angkar was now, at least in part, revealed. Throughout its existence the Cambodian communists movement had been intensive secretive. Before 1975 its leaders had seen this as necessary for the party's survival. Once in power, Pol Pot and his close associates relied on secrecy to consolidate their position against those they judged internal enemies. The revelation of the party's existence in 1977 reflected, in part at least, pressure from china on its clients to acknowledge their true political identity at a time when they depended on Peking for assistance against Vietnam. This assumes that the player chose Forte Stollen as Tact's romantic partner in the very beginning of the game, and THAT assumes that FORTE was the one whose affections Tact (i.e. the game player) won over in the FIRST game (to keep plot continuity so the storyline will make sense).
EDIT: I was mistaken in my interpretation of these clips before, as awj9999, skilled Japanese translator, pointed out to me. It turns out this is actually a FLASHBACK to the time, in the FIRST game, Tact asked Forte to the dance. awj9999 is an extremely skilled translator (at least of written Japanese), and he resisted casting Forte as just a "tough woman" stereotype. So here is the translation he's given me permission to post:

Note to Satouberri ONLY (she'll know why I say this): As you can see from this clip, unlike the anime, Forte is NOT just a two-dimensional "trigger-happy nutzoid girl"; in the game, she is a competent 1st Lieutenant who believes strongly in self-discipline for herself and all around her AND in the idea that we all should become more than we are (for that reason, in the first game when she first met Tact, she told Tact she wouldn't even consider him "her commander" until he fulfilled all sorts of almost-impossible requirements; but if the player decides that Tact and Forte should become "involved", Tact actually manages to succeed and earn Forte's trust and eventually affections). She's also rather quiet, reflective, and wise, but ONLY if something is bothering her (otherwise, as usual, she's forceful, opinionated, and VERY confident in herself and the circumstances around her, and she DOES become as trigger-happy as in the anime, but ONLY in the midst of actual game battles and when she's practicing at the shooting range, because guns and weapons give her a sense of power and control over her environment).
