One of my nights at Broken Bricks lasted till late the next morning and then took me another day to recover. Nonetheless, I kept coming back because I kept meeting very interesting Khemer and Western people there; the place attracts an eclectic and eccentric clientele, of which I am one. The last time I was in PP my camera was "borrowed permanently" early in that stay and I didn't get any footage of the place. So this visit I shot some footage with my Songkran- waterlogged cheap camera, which actually came-out not too bad. There are some picz of Broken Bricks on the internet; however I hope you will enjoy my Mr. Bean approach to the piece of work. Six weeks of my life have been spent wandering around Phnom Penh. My experiences in that city could fill a book, but it's hard to capture the flavor of those experiences in words. For example: Last visit, the tuk-tuk driver whose girlfriend stole my camera while we were out partying, was selected by chance to take me to the airport the day I left for Bangkok. This visit, an unexpected returned a month later, I was surprised he wasn't at the airport to meet me, but the day I left, chance once again selected him as my tuk-tuk to the airport. But that's just the synopsis, the details of how that all played out: the ins and outs, ups and downs, the tripe and snails, the people sleeping on hard floors, everyone ogling me like I'm a walking-talking cash machine, etc. etc. etc. That's just hard to capture in words. Another: Crossing the street in PP requires that you step out into oncoming traffic which will not stop but will try to miss you as you glide between tuk-tuks, motos, trucks and cars, all traveling at about 15-20 mph and they're moving in every possible direction on both sides of every street at the intersection; plus on the sidewalk too and everyone parks on the sidewalk as well. It's the ultimate virtually surreal non-video game. Moral of the story, just crossing the street or walking a sidewalk in PP requires always present, acute awareness that Western people reserve for the extremely rare need to dodge muggers and terrorists. You stay safe in Asia by staying awake. Dave, the artist/barkeep of Broken Bricks appeared from his loft above the bar and welcomed me back and then immediately lapsed into the most recent highly predictable story of his betrayal by his previous Khemer bar-wench. Iconicly, a version of that story is graffitied on the wall of his pissoir: "What do you say to a Farang who tells you his Khemer girlfriend just stole his money and left with another Farang? ...Welcome to Cambodia!" After 7 months in SE Asia, I'm headed back to Hawaii via the East Coast US in May and then eventually on to Hawaii Nea. However, I think a return to SE Asia will be happening again in the not too distant future. It's hard to explain in words what I like about this place, but it feels good and that works for me.
