With the (More) The band originally a surf rock group called The Crossfires from the planet Mars, was formed in 1965 in Westchester, California (a Los Angeles neighborhood) by Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. With the help of DJ and club owner Reb Foster, the Crossfires signed to White Whale Records, and, adhering to the prevailing musical trend, re-branded themselves as a folk rock group called "The Tyrtles", the intentional misspelling inspired by The Byrds. However, the trendy spelling did not survive long. As with the Byrds, the Turtles achieved breakthrough success with a Bob Dylan cover. "It Ain't Me Babe" reached the Billboard Top Ten in the late summer of 1965 (see 1965 in music) and was the title track to the bands first album. Their second single, "Let Me Be" (written by P.F. Sloan), cracked the top 30 in the autumn. Their third hit, "You Baby" (P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri), charted in the top 20 in early 1966. However, their second album You Baby never entered Billboard's Top LPs chart, and of several singles released in 1966 only two the Rolling Stones-like "Grim Reaper of Love" and the adorable "Can I Get to Know You Better" entered the Billboard Hot 100. The album You Baby includes the frenetic pop-rock nugget "Outside Chance", written by Glenn Crocker and Warren Zevon. At the start of 1967 a heavy touring schedule combined with a lack of recent chart success convinced drummer Don Murray and then bassist Chuck Portz to quit the group. They were replaced by Joel Larson then John Barbata on drums and Chip Douglas on bass. It occurred to the band that for eight months they had been performing a certain song on stage that, while moderately popular with the fans, had yet to be recorded. The first of several key Turtles singles co-written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, "Happy Together" seemed almost a parody of itself, and had already been rejected by countless performers. Their biggest hit and surely their signature song, "Happy Together" signalled a turning point for the Turtles and for Chip Douglas, who provided the arrangement. With its tongue-in-cheek tone, incessant and infectious guitar riff, addictive chorus and backing vocals, simple drum and organ lines, and even an oboe playing along during the second chorus, "Happy Together" is perhaps the quintessential example of fresh, feel-good 1960s American pop. The single replaced the the Beatles' "Penny Lane" at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1967. Their only number one, it remained at the top for three weeks. An album of the same name followed and peaked at number 25. Impressed by Chip Douglas's studio arrangements, Monkee Michael Nesmith approached him after a Turtles show at the Whisky a Go Go and invited him to become the Monkees' new producer, as the band wanted to break out of their "manufactured" studio mould. Douglas accepted, left the Turtles, and was replaced by bassist/singer Jim Pons. 1967 proved to be the Turtles' most successful year in the charts. "She'd Rather Be With Me" reached number 3 on the US charts in late spring, and actually out-charted "Happy Together" overseas. Two successive top-15 gems followed: the singularly lush and pretty ballad "You Know What I Mean" and the playfully psychedelic and gleefully adolescent "She's My Girl". Both 45s signalled a certain shift in the bands style. Golden Hits was released later that year, charting in the top 10. (The album covers for Golden Hits and its follow up Golden Hits Vol 2 were designed by Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean fame and his company, Kittyhawk Graphics.) 1968 started without a bang. The first two singles, "Sound Asleep" and "The Story of Rock and Roll", stalled somewhere in the middle of the top 100. The band's fortunes changed when now hugely successful Monkees producer Chip Douglas returned to work with them in the studio. Late in 1968 the Turtles released a concept album called The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, in which the group pretended to be eleven different bands (with names like 'The Bigg Brothers', 'Nature's Children', 'The US Teens featuring Raoul', and 'The Fabulous Dawgs'), each with a song in a different genre. The album yielded two distinctive singles: "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" (both peaking at number six). The blissful-sounding "Elenore" may be the only Top Ten single to contain et cetera in its lyrics, and allegedly was the band's tongue-in-cheek response to White Whale's demands for more songs like "Happy Together". (Howard Kaylan confirmed this account in a live interview on XM Radio's 60s channel on March 3, 2007.) The breathy-trippy 1969 hit "You Showed Me" was written by Byrds members Gene Clark and Roger (then James) McGuinn in 1964. Television appearances in 1968 include a February 26 visit to The Mike Douglas Show, to which they returned in April 1969. Kaylan and Volman rebelled against White Whale's attempts to push the Turtles towards factory-like studio chicanery (including firing the rest of the band, and recording and touring with hired musicians, and putting their vocals tapes already recorded in Memphis ).The label's pressure did force the band to record a single called "Who Would Ever Think That I Would Ever Marry Margaret" ( which the band totally disowned after its release ) The result was the 1969 release Turtle Soup, a critically well-received LP produced by Ray Davies of The Kinks. Inspired by the revered 1968 concept album The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, this was Daviess only ever production work for another band. Kaylan and Volman insisted the whole band share in the writing and singing. Notable tracks include the ethereal and introspective "Somewhere Friday Nite" and the rather failed single "Love in the City". In spite of Turtle Soup's critical acclaim, commercial success was marginal and the band soon began disintegrating. The Turtles wound down their career with a B-sides and rarities album, Wooden Head (1969), and a second compilation album, More Golden Hits (1970). With the demise of The Turtles, White Whale Records was left with few, if any, commercially viable bands, and ceased operation. (Less)

The show was produced by Destiny Images from 1999 to the mid-2000s, and is currently distributed directly to classrooms using space-age technology.
I designed the main LTV characters, and modeled various incarnations of them (with the last season partially modeled and mostly rigged by Joe Justice). I worked on nearly every episode of the extremely low-budget series, and after the first fifteen or so were completed, our composer drifted away and I provided the incidental musical score for the rest (featured songs were by The Zucchini Brothers).
The SK episode was a special one for me because I wrote and completed the entire show alone, except for narration provided by Jim Wolfe.
Unfortunately, after it was completed there was a slight snag. Even though the production had been approved every step of the way by the distributor, the finshed short was not well-received by the consultants who sat in judgement of each show. It was ruled "too fast" and "abrasive" and "distracting", and a slower version was "requested". The first version, which had been produced at breakneck speed with several consecutive up-all-nighters, had to be redone at an even faster pace. I wrote a new slow-motion score, threw out about a third of the script, stretched some existing animation to a glacial pace, and Jim read the new version v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y to avoid the imagined spectre of small children thrown into cardiac arrest.
Producer Jamie Cope felt bad that my original work was discarded, so he instructed one of the video guys (Joe? I forget) to cut a new version, omitting the regular LTV characters (which were contracted to AIT). Destiny Images submitted the recut SK episode to TechTV's weekly EYE DROPS compilation of short animation. It was shown several times before TechTV changed into G4 and most of TechTV's shows went away.
I tried to get a copy of the original cut of the SK episode which featured a cool zeppelin sequence and lots of other gags with the core LTV punctuation-head characters, but the original frames of the edited sequences got lost in the shuffle somehow, cast aside in the day-to-day hurry of production, hidden among the studio's teetering stacks of unlabeled backup CDs. I could re-render those shots and re-edit the show into its original form, but, uh, I won't.
This clip is the truncated TechTV version, followed by a few shots from the lobotomized version currently in distribution.
Interesting (to 3 or 4 of you) production details:
The first version of SK was produced in approximately three weeks. Even though Lightwave 7.? was available when this show was produced, the studio, which rendered the sequences, had not updated its software. Therefore, most of SK had to be done with Lightwave 5.6. 5.6 was solid but severely limited in terms of modern 3D animation software. There was no fast and convenient way to rig characters, implement IK, or use sub-Ds and weight maps. So, most of this video features hard-poly models (watch for the occasional non-planar 'pop'), unrigged hands (they were morphed when necessary), relatively primitive facial morphs, and lots and lots of short cuts and workarounds. All things considered, I think SK came out fairly okay, if you squint when you watch it while breathing through a chloroform-soaked hankie. (Less)

(More) In January 2008, I directed a musical adaptation of the cult classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Musical" through the ASG group "Not-A-Penny Productions at the university of Arkansas. I aimed to make the the show a tribute to the quirkiness of the movie while also creating a deconstructed musical, making fun of the archetypes found in American musical theater. The show premiered in March to sold out crowds every night and was very well received.
This video is an edit of the first two nights the show was performed, so there may be some odd continuity between shots. For example, Insp. Clay's bald wig will disappear and re-appear a few times (it ripped ten minutes before the show started opening night, so we abandoned it). Then again, this is Ed Wood, so odd continuity shouldn't bee too much of a problem. The show also featured lots of projected video, so I super imposed the projected video on here so you can see it better.
"Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Musical" was originally performed in 2003 at The Box Theater in Fort Worth, TX (http://theboxtheater.com). It was adapted for stage and directed by Michael Johnson. Original music created by Johnathon Brinkley, Damon Gay, and Michael Johnson.

Wikipedia.com says:
As a young man, Harper recorded the LP Pleasure and Pain with fellow folk guitarist Tom Freund. After this limited edition record, Harper got a record deal with Virgin Records, who released his debut album, Welcome to the Cruel World (1994).
This was followed by Fight For Your Mind (1995) which became a college radio favorite and generated an abundance of songs which still fill his set list to this day.
In 1999 at the Santa Barbara Bowl, Harper met Jack Johnson, who was unknown at the time and had not recorded. Harper obtained a demo tape of 12 of Johnson's songs that he forwarded to his producer, J.P. Plunier, with whom Johnson recorded his first album.[5]

From early on in Harper's career, his music received more attention in Europe than it did in his home country. While he was a well-known and respected figure in the United States, he was a star in countries like France, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, and The Netherlands, receiving a great deal of airplay and critical acclaim. His popularity in Europe is such that he was French Rolling Stone magazine's Artist of the Year (Artiste De L'Année) in 2003, and his tour that year for Diamonds on the Inside played to packed arenas across the continent.
In October 2004, Harper participated in the Vote for Change concert tour organised to benefit Moveon.org and encourage people in the swing states to vote during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. Also in October, Harper contributed a live recording of the song "Oppression" to For The Lady, a benefit album for jailed Nobel Peace Prize winner and Burmese pro-democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Over the summer of 2005, when the Zooma tour scheduled with Trey Anastasio and various side stage performers was canceled, Harper engaged in a tour of more private clubs/venues such as the Avalon Ballroom in Boston, the Tabernacle in Atlanta, and a full-band acoustic performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This series of concerts saw the debut of a number of new songs, such as "Get It Like You Like It" and "Dressed In Black."
In 2006, Harper released the double album Both Sides of the Gun which debuted at #7 on the Billboard charts.
Harper has just finished his worldwide tour, with support from Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley on the North American leg.
Though uncredited, he appears briefly in the 2006 David Lynch film Inland Empire, alongside his wife Laura Dern.
Harper recorded a new album in Paris, Lifeline. It was released in 2007 and he has also covered John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" on the benefit CD Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.
He has become a big success in Brazil, because of his collaboration "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" with Brazilian singer Vanessa da Mata, which peaked at #1 in the Brazilian top 100.
Harper is part of the No Nukes group which is against the expansion of nuclear power. In 2007 the group recorded a music video of a new version of the Buffalo Springfield song "For What It's Worth".

He then turned his attention to his father's fiddle and began playing in a traveling medicine show, often performing in blackface. He toured the Southern United States and eventually formed a band called "The Crazy Tennesseans".
In 1936, he recorded his two most enduring songs, the traditional The Great Speckled Bird and The Wabash Cannonball. He debuted at the Grand Ole Opry two years later. He was booked as a fiddler, and he should have played the Turkey Buzzard for a square dancin' segment, but he decided to try and sing The Great Speckled Bird. His decision was not well received, however. Acuff became a regular on the Opry, forming a backing band called the Smoky Mountain Boys, led by friend and Dobro player Bashful Brother Oswald. By 1940 he was the star of the show.
Acuff's recording of The House of the Rising Sun on November 3, 1938 is the first known commercial recording of the song. He released several singles in the 1940s such as The Wreck on the Highway, Beneath That Lonely Mound of Clay and The Precious Jewel. During the 1940s he also appeared in six movies.
In 1942, a man of many talents, he formed a music publishing venture with Chicago songwriter Fred Rose. Acuff-Rose Music became a country music phenomenon, owning huge numbers of copyrights including those by Marty Robbins, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and all of the songs of Hank Williams.
As his record sales declined in the late 40s and 50s, Acuff spent most of his time on the road, becoming one of the hottest tickets in country music. In 1962 he was the first living musician elected to The Country Music Hall of Fame. By the 1970s Acuff performed almost exclusively with the Grand Ole Opry, at Opryland USA, greatly legitimizing it as the top institution in country music. He made one rare appearance at Carlton Haney's Camp Spring Bluegrass Festival in 1971. He received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1991.
[edit] Political career
Acuff had a brief affair with politics, losing a run for the office of Governor of Tennessee as a Republican in 1944 and 1948. Acuff later campaigned in 1970 for his friend Tex Ritter in his campaign for GOP nomination for U.S. Senate in Tennessee.
[edit] Trivia
A popular legend is that Japanese troops during World War II would enter battle yelling, "To hell with Roy Acuff" [3], [4]
In 1962, Roy Acuff was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. For his contribution to the recording industry, he has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame located on 1541 Vine St.
Acuff was initiated as an Entered Apprentice at the East Nashville Freemasonry Lodge in 1943, and raised to Master Mason in 1944. He was made a 33rd Degree Mason on 21 October 1985.
Acuff is thought to be one inspiration for Henry Gibson's character Haven Hamilton in Robert Altman's film Nashville. The fictionalized character was reportedly a composite of several well-known musicians, including Acuff and Hank Snow.
Acuff on recording: "[A] little secret of my policy in the studio ... [w]henever you once decide that you are going to record a number, put everything you've got into it. Don't say, 'Oh, we'll take it over and do it again' because every time you go through it you lose just a little something ... [l]et's do it the first time and to hell with the rest of them" - on the classic album Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
U.S. Olympian high jumper Amy Acuff is his distant cousin. Some sources erroneously list her as his daughter. (Less)

The third and final arcade outing for Donkey Kong sees the giant ape once again cast as the enemy. Unlike the first two Kong games, the legendary character Mario doesn't feature, with the player taking on the role of 'Stanley', a gardener who is armed with a bug spray with which he must destroy the swarms of insects that attack Stanley and try to steal his plants.
Each level has five plants that must be protected. Stanley must also spray Kong to force the ape to the top of the screen and complete the level.

- TRIVIA -
Donkey Kong 3 was Nintendo's third arcade featuring the hapless ape. This game came out at the time of the big arcade game collapse. Companies such as Atari, Konami, and Taito saw a drastic reduction in sales for their arcade machines. Smaller arcade companies such as Centuri (producer of "Pleiades" and "Phoenix") simply went out of business. Although some notable games such as "Cloak and Dagger", "Track and Field", and "Elevator Action" were released, none of them had strong sales. Donkey Kong 3 was no exception to what was going on. First of all, Donkey Kong 3 changed the look of their game. Second, Instead of Mario, they now used Stanley the Exterminator (This is the only Nintendo game to feature the character of Stanley). Unfortunately, Donkey Kong 3 was not well received at the arcades and did pretty poorly in sales. It did develop a cult of games who remained loyal to the Donkey Kong series, but it never offered any serious competition. video jeux video juegos giochi videospiele. (Less)

This well-crafted cartoon series from 1970s animation powerhouse Filmation was a reworking of the original Flash Gordon serial. Art design reflected the earlier era with a combination of Art Deco, Gothic Revival, Victorian an other styles. The New Adventures of Flash Gordon was an animated television series. In 1979 through the efforts of Filmation, The New Adventures of Flash Gordon appeared, partly as a reaction to the mammoth success of Star Wars in 1977. The series was a homage to the original Flash Gordon comic strip and featured most of the original characters, including Flash's girlfriend Dale Arden, and the scientist Hans Zarkov. Flash and company had traveled to Mongo, where they were forced into battle by its ruler, Ming the Merciless, his daughter Princess Aura, and his army of Metal Men. To help their cause the heroes lead the formation of an alliance beginning with King Thun, leader of the Lion People; Prince Barin, leader of Arboria; and King Vultan, ruler of the Hawkmen. The original project was produced as a made-for-television feature film. When NBC saw the finished work, it was decided to turn the work into an episodal Saturday morning series. The change in format resulted in the the story being significantly expanded with a sub-plot of Ming secretly giving military technology to Hitler being dropped. When a second season of episodes was ordered two years after the original, NBC insisted that the episodal format be dropped and that the stories be written for a more juvenile level. This resulted in the addition of the pet dragon Gremlin, an artist in nose-blown smoke. This second season of episodes was not well received and the program was canceled after completion of the second season run. The entire series has recently been released on DVD. (Less)

The calm atmosphere of the 133-year-old Husi complex, now converted into a creative industry park, reverberated to unique and funky music. Visitors to the recent NeoSpring Creative Festival enjoyed watching the performances by eight independent (indie) artistes and bands who did their usual alternative numbers. They were content with the appreciation of the small audience. "The mainstream media still has limited knowledge and recognition of independent music, which is not well received by the general public yet," said Luo Hao, who is also known as iloop, from Beijing. IGO, a Shanghai-based electro new wave band formed last year by JJay and B6, may have found an answer through its collaboration with i-amtv, also known as Independent Asian Music Television channel. i-amtv is a new multi-platform music video channel aimed at bringing exciting elements of Asian indie music to 3G mobile phones, personal media players, IPTV and online video networks. It sets out to unleash the music programming that probably cannot be found in MTV or other television networks. All indie musicians have to do is send i-amtv their works for dissemination via its partner networks or platforms. So far, IGO has given i-amtv two music videos to be featured in various digital platforms. Some of the region's best acts like Twisted Machine (China), An Id Signal (Hong Kong), Art Thomya (Thailand), Pop Shuvit and Nao (Malaysia), Firebrands (Singapore), Kou Chou Ching (Taiwan) and Suck Stuff (South Korea) have signed up to work with the channel. Music Kampany, set up by much-sought-after Malaysian musician Genervie Kam, was appointed by i-amtv founder and Wildwave CEO Stephen McCormack as its sole content acquisition representative in Asia. Wildwave and Music Kampany were in Shanghai recently to promote the new i-amtv channel to prospective partners and Chinese indie bands. Wildwave has a wide distribution network including 3G phones, Joost, Apple ITMS, Sony PSP and Microsoft Zune as well as clients and partners like Vodafone, Apple, Telus, Setanta Media, Nokia and Cingular. They also brought good news that Sony Connect would be i-amtv's worldwide distribution partner, making Asian indie music content available on the Sony PSP platform. report by Chow How Ban, the star, malaysia (Less)

Interesting (to 3 or 4 of you) production details: The first version of SK was produced in approximately three weeks. (Less)

Science reveals that animals are alive! Studies show that creatures with varying complexities of nervous systems are actually in possession of life and many actually have feelings!
This news is not well received among many death enthusiasts who derive personal pleasure from dominating, abusing and destroying animals.
It seems that as a result of personal traumas during childhood and possible mental illness, there are millions of human beings that have no capacity to feel respect for animal life and many times human life.
Factory farmers who are proof of this affliction, have no trouble finding employees to torture animals for money.
Some are hopeful that the respect for life may trickle down to include other living things besides humans. Tempered with the fact that this is only the twenty-first century, many know they will not see such a miricle in their life time. (Less)

I'm actually doing the Dale North & Ailsean remix of it (as featured on Project Majestic Mix: A Tribute to Nobuo Uematsu (track 14 on disc 1 in the Gold Edition and track 15 in the Silver Edition)), with my own changes put into it. Edit/Update - 2/26/2008 11:17PM MST (-7 GMT): Well it's been over a year since I uploaded this and finally it's received 3,000 views. I think it's time that I record a new version; one that's actually on time. Also I'll probably switch the effects used around a little; I'm undecided on whether to keep the ending clean or overdriven, which overdrive style to use for each section, the amount of reverb (if at all) for each section, what sections to use delay (and for what length), and any other pedals I can add to make it sound close to the original or to make my sound; something fairly different from this recording most likely. Any ideas? (Less)
