But how can I play a DVD, Voice synthesize a page, read email, run a web server with database server, do web programming, and watch youtube all at the same time on this "dweeby" machine,and I can't play a DVD on my Toshiba Satelite A135-S2276 with Vista on it in 512 Megs, with major resource killed, with the Toshiba tools killed, with graphics extras turned off (I tried, believe me I tried).. How is it possible Vista could be such a resource hog if Windows 2000 (an obsolete OS as far as Microsoft is concerned) can do all the same things with less.. This is blatant proof of how Microsoft intentionally makes Windows resource intensive to encourage people to buy more hardware.. Now you know why Intel and all the vendors are in bed with Microsoft and not with Linux.. Linux is efficient, Windows is not.. See my demos of Half Life 2 running on a OS that takes no more than 127 megs for itself, and still can manage multiple processors as well as offer the Compiz eye-candy that compares to Windows Vista Aero.. You really have to contemplate this as it's an important thing to ponder.. Furthermore, your Playstation 3 runs on a 800Mhz (I've heard) PowerPC chip.. The XBOX runs on 3 1GHz processors.. And still we shell out for hardware on each new release of Windows, for what? I have no idea.. And they won't tell you either.. For all we know, a lot of it could be deliberate inefficiencies.. Note, the only perceivable difference between NT4 and Windows 2000 is the support for USB ports, something Windows 98 had.. Windows XP added some bells and whistles to Windows 2000.. SP2 just covers some security problems with the base install of XP which had security holes like MS Messenger running on it (if you leave an unpatched copy of XP, pre-SP1 on the Internet, it will get hacked and turned into a botnet in no time at all, because hackers perform port scans on every billion or so possible addresses given by the 4 byte combinations of IP addresses. A computer that port scans 4 billion computers with a likelihood of hitting a insecure Windows machine, for which the architecture is well understood and turning it into a bot-net, is fairly great.. I'm sure some of the people encouraging the jump to Vista are possibly hackers that know how to hack Vista already.. And want more resources to throw at their clientelle. Okay that is FUD, but relevant.. What is to be gained by using a linux system, particularly if its very hard to hack without insecure ports as come with Windows? Anyhow, Windows 2000 is what I will continue to use on this machine until this laptop kicks the bucket, but I'm using Ubuntu too, so eventually I won't be using any Windows OS's...
