Here are the players, along with the reasons I chose them: Sandy Koufax: The best pitcher of all time in my opinion. No one had a lower ERA at any time from 1961-1966. His career was cut short due to a bum elbow. Cy Young: All-time leader in wins and has the award for best pitcher named after him. Nuff said. Bob Gibson: Dominance in 1964 World Series was the reason Major League Baseball lowered the mound. Satchel Paige: Amazing in the Negro Leagues and even pitched a major league game at age 59. Tom Seaver: Awesome career with the Mets included 300 wins, a World Series title, and 3 Cy Youngs. Johnny Bench: Was the catcher that powered the Big Red Machine, the best team of the 70's. Won 2 World Series, 2 MVPs and 10 Gold Gloves. Lou Gehrig: The Iron Horse batted cleanup for the amazing Yanks of the 20's and 30's. Won 2 MVPs and was a 7-time All-star. Also hit for an amazing .340 career batting average. Pete Rose: All time leader in hits with over 4,000. Mike Schmidt: Great thirdbaseman won 3 MVP awards. 12- time all-star and 10 gold gloves. Cal Ripken, Jr: Had 400+ Homeruns, 3,000+ hits, 2 MVP awards, and a World Series ring. Ted Williams: Probably the best natural hitter of all time, the last one to hit .400 in a season. The purpose (More) The Enterprise of Brockton, Mass. www.enterprisenews.com It was shortly before the baseball season started when head coach Mike Armour got his Stoughton High baseball team together. The purpose was to select captains, and senior Andy Asztalos was nominated for the position. "He's very quiet and soft-spoken," Armour said about his senior. "He leads by his actions rather than talking. He leads when he's on the field, he leads when he's on the mound." When the votes were counted, seniors Brian Baker and Jimmy Barber were named captains — no surprise there. When the third captain was announced, junior Tyler Dennis was named. Asztalos, the team's MVP the previous year, was fourth in the voting. "He took it fine," said Armour, in his first year as head coach at Stoughton. "I pulled him aside and said, in my eyes, he's a captain. I told him I count on him 100 percent and it's nice to have players like that. He told me than whenever I needed him, he'd be there for me." What makes Asztalos unique is that there's nothing unique about him. What sets him apart from other players is that there's nothing that sets him apart. Talk to him about Stoughton High baseball, and he talks about the team. Talk to him about his role with the team, and he talks about just being a member of the team. "It was the teammates' vote and I just kind of went with it," said Asztalos of the voting. "The three captains we have are great and I agree with it. If the team votes for that, I completely agree with that. "I was a little bit disappointed, but it hasn't really affected me. The other three are great leaders, and I'm leading also without the position of captain. "All the seniors have showed great leadership this year. It doesn't matter who's considered captain with our team." This has been a tough year at Stoughton — the team is 1-9, but Asztalos has held his ground, earning the Black Knights' only win while going 1-2 with a 2.77 ERA. Aztalos has pitched 17 2/3 innings with 23 strikeouts, only six walks and one complete game. When the hard-working, nose-grinding senior is on the mound, everyone on the team feels they have a chance to win. When he's on the mound, Armour can count on a gutsy performance. "He gets this look in his eye when he's on the mound and you know you're going to get a good outing out of him," said Armour. "He's not physically imposing. He's relatively thin and we joke about his arm. He's got a rubber arm and can keep throwing and throwing." Baseball is Asztalos' true athletic love. He plays other sports on the side, but none at the high school. He made the freshman basketball team his first year, but was cut from the team as a sophomore. In the summer, Asztalos plays baseball with the Babe Ruth team because he wants to. It's his decision not to play Legion baseball. When the fall comes, he'll attend UMass-Lowell and try out for the baseball team. There are no guarantees he'll make the team, of course, but few who know him are betting against him. "I can't say I will make it because I'm not sure," he said. "But I'm going to try." "He definitely has the potential of throwing a couple of innings for them here and there," said Armour. "Nothing he throws is straight; that's a lefty trait. He has great movement and a nice tail on his fastball. He consistently locates pitches and knows how to pitch. He's got a good shot at playing after high school." But that's for next year. This season hasn't ended yet and Asztalos isn't ready for it to end. His goal is to "try to make the best of the second half of the season." That's good news for Armour, who will hate to lose his talented senior when the season does end. "He's just a good kid, everything about him," said Armour. "If I had a team full of Andys, I'd be doing just fine." (Less)
