Although this incident seemed to be a simple misunderstanding to begin with but then culminated into unnecessary chaos that was blown way out of proportion, it should be noted that as Muslims, we respect all of the prophets--Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and all the rest of them, peace be upon them.
Just think about how you would feel if someone tried to insult the person closest to you (your spouse, mother, father, grandparents, sibling, children, grandchildren, etc.). To Muslims, prophets are closer to us than all of those people.
Nonetheless, as this seemed to be a simple misunderstanding to begin with, they should have just simple changed the name of the teddy bear--there's no need to punish for such a simple and seemingly unintentional misunderstanding!

A British teacher asks her Sudanese students to come up with possible names for a teddy bear...
After choosing some names and voting, the students ended up with the name Muhammad.
The teacher is then "jailed for 15 days after insulting Islam's Prophet by allowing her pupils in Sudan to name a teddy bear Muhammad."
The teacher was also "suspended from her teaching post, and the school has closed until January."
I'm a Muslim.
What do I think from an Islamic perspective?
I think this is just silly.
The teacher didn't even choose the name.
Additionally, the bear wasn't named as such to offend.

So do you see the silliness we are dealing with?
Why didn't they simply just change the teddy bear's name?
This silly ordeal reminded me of another silly incident that previously happened in Sudan in which a Sudanese man had "been forced to take a goat as his 'wife', after he was caught having sex with the animal."
So it seems this is just another one of Sudan's silly and ignorant non-Islamic verdicts.
However, one must keep in mind the massive underreporting and extreme bias on behalf of the media.
Although both this teddy bear and the goat incident occurred in Sudan,
Things like this are a rarity in Sudan.
Not only that, but the ones passing these verdicts are even more rare.
Most Sudanese do not agree with these two rulings.
But in the end, it was up to the ones passing the verdict.
And in these two cases, silly ignorance prevailed.
Although ignorant, the media jumps on it and passes it off as something from Islam.
But in reality, Islam is entirely free from such ignorance.
It makes one remember the hadith of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh):
"Narrated Anas:
Allah's Apostle said, 'From among the portents of the Hour are (the following):
1. Religious knowledge will be taken away (by the death of Religious learned men).
2. (Religious) ignorance will prevail.
3. Drinking of alcoholic drinks (will be very common).
4. There will be prevalence of open illegal sexual intercourse.'"

This teddy bear issue in Sudan is a prime example of this ignorance that was prophesied over 1400 years ago by the final messenger (pbuh).
May God rid the world of this ignorance.
And what better way to do this than to follow the advice of God, Himself?
"Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),
Has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood).
Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.
Has taught man that which he knew not."

The reason Ishaq's Sira, The Life of Muhammad, is so important is that it has many passages similar to the Qur'an: for example, on page 326 and 327 of The Life of Muhammad it explains what, "Allah desires for you the Hearafter" that's from Qur'an 8:67 means; and Ishaq's Sira says it means , "Allah desires killing them to manifest the religion and by which he wishes to manifest and by which the next world may be attained." Sounds like an explanation of how fighting, killing, and paradise are linked together and summed up in Qur'an 9:111, "Verily, Allah has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties for the price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allah's Cause, so they kill others and are killed;" and a summary of Bukhari's Hadith Book 52 entitled Fighting for the Cause of Allah (Jihad); or the best summation of all, the Muslim violence over the past 1400 years.
Ishaq's Sira also has many passages that are in the Hadiths of Bukhari, Muslim, and the History of al-Tabari. One of note is Muhammad's Night's Journey, which is the source of the Muslim claim to Jerusalem, which is on pages 181-187 of The Life of Muhammad and which is also found in Buhkari V4B54N429/V5B58N227, and Muslim C75B1N309.

Also note that in the discussion on page 72 on demon possession, that it's Muhammad's mother that brings up the subject, then she says why it can't be so; but it's Muhammad's relatives that were with him right after the "two angels clothed in white" who threw him to the ground and opened up his belly, who were afraid he was demon possessed.
On page 79 of The Life of Muhammad it also describes the seer as a fortune teller. So we're talking about someone who reads omens, practices divination and the like. A practice that the Bible condemns (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).
Something to keep in mind when you're listening to the account about Muhammad's encounter with the angel who he said was Gabriel, the angel seemed to enjoy throwing Muhammad down to the ground and choking him to the point of death. Now when we turn to the Bible, we find that when Gabriel appeared to someone and they were afraid, "but he touched me and made me stand upright" (Daniel 8:18), "Do not be afraid, Zacharias" (Luke 1:13), and "Do not be afraid, Mary" (Luke 1:30). No throwing anyone to the ground and choking them there.
Since a common response by Muslims to Muhammad's behavior with Aisha is that it was common in ancient Arabia for men to marry and have sex with girls as young as 6 and 9, I'd like to see the evidence of that. Promising a child in marriage to someone when they are a child and fulfilling that promise when they are mature doesn't count.
More importantly you will notice that Muhammad has a pattern of doing exactly the opposite of what God says to do in the Bible. In Song of Solomon 8:8-9, we find what the family of a young girl who has no breast is to do if someone wants to marry her. It talks of building on her a battlement (images of guarding come to mind), and of enclosing her or barricading her, well that's pretty self explanatory. So we find Muhammad doing and Allah condoning what the Bible says not to do, take a young girl with no breast for a wife.
An argument from some Muslims is that Aisha really wasn't 9 when Muhammad consummated his marriage with her, she was much older, but that's not what Bukhari says (Bukhari V7B62N64, 65, and 88). Bukhari's Hadith along with Muslim's are called the Sunnah, from which Sunni Muslims get their name, and for a Sunni Muslim there is no higher authority than the Sunnah, other than the Qur'an itself. So if a Sunni Muslim says Aisha wasn't 9 when Muhammad consummated his marriage with her, they're calling Bukhari a liar.

Dr. Abd Al-Hamid Al-'Ubeidi: There is no minimum marriage age for either men or women in Islamic law. The law in many countries permits girls to marry only from the age of 18. This is arbitrary legislation, not Islamic law. Why? Because there might be cases in which it is impossible to keep the girl [single] until the age of maturity.
For example, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Serbs killed many Albanian Muslims, and there are many mass graves there. [Muslim] families fled from that war, and so did small children, who were not yet at the age of marriage. But if a man takes such a girl in, he might desire her, and eventually commit a sin, even though his intentions were noble. So he can formally marry her, but without having sex with her. She will remain like that until she grows up, and then someone will ask to marry her, or he will find her a husband -- this happens in many Islamic countries with girls from Bosnia-Herzegovina -- and when he finds her a husband, he will divorce her, so that she can marry again. In such a case, there should be no waiting period. So there is no need for the girl to be of age.
Most of the time we act according to what is acceptable to most people, and indeed, most men do not marry a girl until she is of age. In some Islamic countries, the age of maturity can be 8 or 10 years. In Yemen, a girl might get her period at the age of 8. In cold countries, such as Russia, Belarus, Scandinavia, New Zealand, Canada, and so on, a girl might not reach maturity until she is 22 years old. She might not get her period until then. Therefore, the greatness of Islamic law is manifest in the fact that marriage is not just for pleasure. True, it is the basic objective for marriage, but there are some cases that require solutions.

Many criminals, the enemies of Islam, ask: "How could the Prophet Muhammad, at 52 years of age, marry 'Aisha when she was only 8 years old, and consummate the marriage when she was 9 years old?" I say to them: People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Why do you permit your young girls to fornicate? They consider it one of their liberties. Therefore, in these stupid countries, you rarely find girls aged 10 or 12 who are still virgins. They permit this. They have even legislated laws stating that if a girl is under the age of 18, and her girlfriend [sic] or whatever has had sex with her, she has the right to have an abortion. How can you permit the outcome without accepting the cause? Why do you allow your girls to have sex and say this is an individual liberty? It is okay to fornicate with girls there or force them to have sex, and so on, and they have the right to have an abortion. If you permit all this before the age [of 18], without a marriage contract and without any legal grounds -- how come you forbid marriage?

-This desire is something God has put in the 'design' of running human life
-If the desire of sex is used to maintain family, becomes sacred, as the Prophet of Islam has said 'Marriage is the most sacred construction'
-Islam recommends and promotes marriage
-When sexual relations are done within the framework of the 'family' it becomes a spiritual method to get closer to God
-The intellect must control the sexual desire, otherwise the desire would be satisfied in ways which are immoral
-The Youth should be prepared as to how to control and channel this desire
-Islam disapproves of open displays of sexuality and promotes sexuality which occurs inside the framework of marital relationships
-The pressure of the sexual desire which is left without guidance and direction is like that of a river with fast flowing water, if you dont control the current of this water, it may go and flood houses and kill children who cannot cope with the pressure of the current, but if you control the water and direct the water towards a dam, then you can use this energy for making many good things out of it, so instead of being harmful, you can make it beneficial
-If this strong and powerful sexual desire is directed towards the family relations, then like the river, it is so powerful that it can mantain families and save them from collapse, can bring love, mercy and passion to the family, but if we leave it, and don't direct it, then this desire damages the society and the family
-Islam is very much in favor of sexuality that is guided towards the benefit and interest of human beings
-Islam tells the men to lower the gaze when looking at women in order to respect and maintain her modesty and dignity
-In Islam both man and women have equal say in marriage, parents cannot force marriages
-'Islamic' countries are failing their duty in educating their people on marital relationships
