Within one short year she would establish herself as one of the greatest racehorses to set foot on the track. She won her first ten starts with ease, the perfect champion. But she would never finish her 11th race. The flawless filly, the hometrack hero, would break down in the stretch during one of the most anticipated match races of all time, proving that only death could defeat Ruffian's great thoroughbred heart.
The almost black filly was foaled late on April night in 1972. The daughter of Shenanigans by Reviewer, she was one of the biggest foals on Claiborne Farm. She began her yearling training with Frank Whiteley and that was when her career took off. Her exercise riders were constantly being reprimanded to "hold her back with the group", but there was no holding Ruffian once she got onto that track. She knew she was a racehorse and she knew what her job was, what was in her pedigree and her heart.... to beat the others, to come in first, to win.
Ruffian's first race was May 22nd, 1974. People actually laughed her off, but those were the ones who hadn't seen her run yet. They said she was "just too fat", with her girth measuring 75 1/2 inches, and that they "werent throwing away perfectly good money". Wouldnt they be shocked to see her not only win, but completely dominate the field by crossing the wire 15 lengths in front while tying the track record for 5 1/2 furlongs, something no other 2 year old had ever done while breaking their maiden race! Not only that, but she did it with power and assurance, and pranced off the track like she wanted to do it all over again!
For the rest of her two year old season, Ruffian denied any challenger that tried to get their nose in front. She remained stunning, beautiful, perfect. She equaled track records, and she broke them. She also shattered the previous record for a 2 year old at 6 furlongs at Saratoga, going 1:08 3/5, faster than any of the greats of the past including Man o' War and Secretariet. Ruffian was also nicknamed a heartbreaker her first season, one of the toughest of all horses to beat, because she just didnt know how to lose. Some of her rivals that she sped away from so easily in the stretch were never quite the same afterwards. Her victories included the Fashion Stakes, the Astoria, the Sororiety, and the Spinaway. Her two year old season was shortened by a hairline fracture after only 5 starts, but her brilliance had won her the Eclipse Award for best two year old filly.
Ruffian's three year old season was as amazing as her previous one. Frank Whiteley started her off in an allowance race where she won by almost 5 lengths. Her next start was the Comely Stakes, where she won by 8. From there she went on to sweep New York Filly Triple Crown, consisting of the Acorn, the Mother Goose, and the Coaching Club American Oaks, becoming only the 4th filly to do so, while simultaneously setting a stakes record in the first two legs and tying the existing one in the third. Then the question was asked... could she beat the boys?
The great match race was set, it was to be Ruffian against the Derby winner of 1975, Foolish Pleasure. Both horses broke cleanly, with Foolish Pleasure a step in front, but it was only a matter of seconds before they were going head to head. Ruffian stuck her nose in front, the opening quarter was run in 22 1/5. At this time Ruffian started pulling away from Foolish Pleasure, first a head, then a neck, then by half a length. Suddenly, the jockeys heard a snapping sound. Then Foolish Pleasure was in front by a length, two, three.... the announcer called out with disbelief, "Ruffian has broken down!" but the great filly kept running. She ground her leg into the track but there was no stopping her. By the time she was pulled up, her hoof dangled uselessly and it was all anyone could do to get her off the track.
They operated on Ruffian all through the night but to no avail, she began running and ripped the cast off upon coming out of the anesthesia, causing further damage to her leg. The men and the vets around her had tried to perform a miracle surgery and it had only furthered her agony. Shortly after 2 am, Ruffian was put down, and she was free to run once more. She was buried around 9 pm that evening at belmont park, with her nose pointed towards the finish line. Hundreds showed up to pay their respects to the legendary filly. She had galloped into the hearts of people across the nation in only two short seasons and she would never be forgotten.

Giraffes are even-toed ungulates, meaning that they are hooved. Giraffes are ruminants, meaning they have a four-chambered stomach like cattle, and chew their cud to assist in digestion. Like cattle, the females are called cows, the males bulls, and the babies calves. Even though giraffes have the longest necks in the animal kingdom, their necks only have seven vertebrae just as most mammals. Giraffes have special valves in the blood vessels in their necks to prevent the blood from rushing out of their head when lifting it quickly, so as to prevent fainting. A bull giraffe can reach a height of 15 to 17 feet (4.7-5.3 m). They have a long, black tongue which can be extended up to 18 inches (46 cm) in order to strip leaves from high branches. At 1:32, a male giraffe is testing a female's urine to see if she is ready to breed (it's called flehmen or lip-curl response). The female with legs sticking out of her backside is giving birth. After a gestation period of 15 months, the mothers give birth standing up. You'll notice that the baby's horns are flattened to allow for making the birthing process easier. There were several babies born while I worked there, but one female was never very good at motherhood,... so we would always have to bottle raise her young each time she gave birth. The female giraffe that is nursing two babies is actually the mother of the third baby standing to the side. Paul Wellstone's death was eerily similar to the circumstances surrounding the October 2000 plane crash death of another Democratic Senate hopeful, Missouri Gov. Mel Carnahan. Just over the wall from the wall can be seen the columbarium or dovecote - see ill. 38, which was built in the time of the Templars but had fallen into disrepair by the time the Hospitallers took over, this is confirmed in an account of the property written by John-de-la-Haye in 1313. Although very feint now, there is a Latin inscription over the door which in The Gentleman's Magazine of 1907, p.635, the Reverend John Webb stated read in abbreviated form: The full version is, " Anno Domini millesimo trecentesimo vicesimo sexto factum fuit istud columbare fratrem Ricardum", which in translation reads, "In the year of our Lord 1326 this dovecote was built by Richard", - see ill. 39, this is thought to be somewhat of an exaggeration and probably means that he repaired the dovecote in 1326. John Webb also remarks that on his visit he also noticed another inscription in the interior of the dovecote which read, "GILBE RTVS", whoever Gilbertus was remains a mystery, perhaps he helped Brother Richard in the restoration of the building? Webb describes other stones carved with, "the double cross of the Templars, accompanied in one instance with the letter R, of the scriptorial form". The upper part of the roof is 'dished' which allowed rainwater to feed through an opening into a round cistern on the floor, this then supplied the pigeons with drinking and washing water, Bond, 2004, p.151. Inside there are 20 tiers each consisting of 33 nesting holes which gives a total of 666 holes.
The Knights Templar were given land in Llangarewi by King Henry II in 1180. The Ministry of Taxation has revealed plans to introduce individual tax numbers for every citizen. The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church says the project is evil, for the bar code used by tax officials contains the fiendish number, 666. The Synod has proposed that a national electronic language be formed.

"He accepts he undertook work as a referee but it was part of the medical advice that he was given," said Mr Dyer.
Adjourning sentence to 19 May, magistrates asked for a pre-sentence report and said they had not ruled out custody as an option.
He is a seriously ill man who needed the support of the Benefits Agency. Instead he is vilified and has his good name besmirched by the unaccountable nobody busybodies who criminalise him for getting his health back. For the sake of £22 a week which no doubt he pays towards undertaking his medical exercises.

A clergyman is urging townsfolk to help pay the fine and £225 court bill of a Whitehaven man prosecuted for overfilling his wheelie bin.
The Rev John Bannister, rector of Whitehaven, has accused Copeland Borough Council of bullying and making a scapegoat of young dad Gareth Corkhill, 26, of The Oval, Mirehouse.
The prosecution, the first of its kind by Copeland council, has made national TV and newspaper headlines and, says Mr Bannister, reflects negatively on the high-handed and patronising manner in which the council, and in particular certain elected members and senior officers involved in the wider issue, have acted.
"Surely Copeland's first duty is to respond to Mr Corkhill's problems in managing the disposal of his household rubbish, within the restrictions of the council's own inadequate service, in other words, to look at their own deficiencies before condemning the good name of those they are paid and elected to serve.''
Mr Corkhill had not been in court to hear JPs fine him £110 and impose a further £100 costs and a £15 government surcharge, when the case was 'proved in absence'.
He had been charged with overfilling his wheelie bin; enforcement officers had taken photographs in January of the bin with its lid raised. Mr Corkhill, who had been warned on a previous occasion, was offered the chance to pay a fixed penalty of £110 rather than be taken to court. He agreed at the time but the penalty was not paid.

Mr Corkhill said he had been shocked by the fine: "My bin lid was only open four inches. I couldn't believe they would do that. I don't leave the rubbish on the floor. Plus I have my daughter over on weekends.
"We recycle everything we can, including plastics, cardboard, tins, glass and paper. We have got a black box that is always full.
"It's only an £80 fine for flytipping. I would have been better off doing that."
Mr Bannister is sympathetic and "in order to show solidarity and compassion with the sad state Mr Corkhill has found himself in, I am seeking donations from the community to re-to imburse Mr Corkhill and his young family.
"Hopefully, the community of Whitehaven, which is not known for cowering to this sort of bullying, can demonstrate its feelings of disgust by this small but supportive action.
"Sadly, what we cannot do, as a community, is to right the injustice done to Mr Corkhill by Copeland Council, in making him a criminal by their actions.
"To deal with this borough-wide problem by scape-goating Mr Corkhill and damaging his life with a criminal record, is irresponsible on the part of Copeland Borough Council,

The murder of a Canadian Environment Philanthropist has Toronto Police conducting a manhunt for the suspect.
The suspect laid in wait for his victim, but also left behind evidence including his photo.
The Earth Keeper Initiative in Marquette, MI joins environmental groups around the world encouraging the public to provide police with tips to make an arrest in this brutal murder.

Toronto police have released video of a suspect in the murder of Canada's biggest environment philanthropist.
The victim, 66-year-old Glenn Davis, was gunned down in a Toronto Parking lot garage on Friday May 18, 2007.
Davis, who inherited his father's transportation and trucking fortune, gave millions of dollars to a wide range of environmental causes including the World Wildlife Fund.
Davis shunned publicity but was well know by environmental groups who join friends in their shock of his brutal murder.
Toronto police release video and photos from a surveillance camera of a man they now call a suspect.
The man is described as:
White Male
Between 25 and 30 years old
About 5-feet 8 inches tall
Suspect was wearing a black baseball cap, a blue sweater, a waist-length dark jacket with a hood, dark pants, white running shoes and a dark-colored backpack.
Police believe Davis was targeted - maybe even for his environmental philanthropy.

Davis was severely beaten in December 2005 outside his Toronto office but his life was saved by onlookers who intervened.

Davis was one of just 18 survivors of a June 1983 airplane fire that killed 23 people.
Davis was aboard an Air Canada jet bound for Toronto that was destroyed by fire after making an emergency landing at Greater Cincinnati Airport.
Canadian folk star Stan Rogers was killed in the fire but Davis survived.
Some says Davis's life was changed by that fire - and that's when he betgan heavily donating to environmental causes.
