Content: Awesome open! Works well as a hook, but is never explained or paid off. Great premise of needing to follow rules and dying inside as opposed to living one's life to finding a physical death. List the rules – all of them up front to follow his transgressions. Premise never quite plays out as he is captured by good detective work and NOT his own breaking of the rules. Activate the character – the story happens TO him as opposed to the reverse, or an interplay of what happens to the character, then the choices (breaking his own rules) he makes creating his downfall. Protagonist needs better audience affinity to better feel his downfall. Opening murder never explained. Watch over-reliance on Voice Over. A little goes a long way. Protagonist's attraction to Femme Fatale was inexplicable. She was clearly crazy and dangerous. Technique: Outstanding cinematography – from lighting to rack focus usage. Terrific sound – remarkable mixture of music, production sound and Voice Over. Strong title sequence. Great framing/usage of story space. Pacing too slow. Tighten editing. Involving mood – matching story. Very good casting. Judge Vladimir Perlovich's Feedback: Stylistically this is one of the most thought-through films in the festival. The film does a great job of setting mood through nuances of camera work, music, lighting and composition and getting putting us inside the lead character's head through smart, revealing voice-over. At the same time, what we have here is a classic case of a two-hour feature condensed to a 10 minute short. There is a lot of backstory to get out which necessitates a hefty voice over. Instead of flashbacks, the entire past is revealed through the lead character's verbal recollection. This makes it hard to divine his motive. Here's basically a decent, ordinary fellow who decides to commit a massive crime without a particularly pressing motive. The very nature of his on the lam routine is inherently passive. The lead character must be dynamic in order to drive the story forward and here we have a protagonist who spends his time reading books. This puts a certain damper on the story's forward momentum. The drama of the story comes from the “chance” meeting between the embezzler and the pretty girl. If the embezzler is a someone at the end of his rope, a man desperate to break the bonds of silence and make a human connection, this is something that we as an audience infer but is not made clear in the direction. The story hinges on the lead character making a huge decision to break the rules and this decision would need to be set up in more detail in order to be fully credible. Much of what would make this decision plausible has to do with the female protagonist. We don't know how she finds the fugitive and the entire process of bonding between them is rushed. This relationship should develop over the course of several scenes and the film has to rely on the chemistry between the male and the female lead instead of voice-over to bring us into the heart of the drama. She has to be more clever, a better manipulator, someone who knows how to sow seeds and watch them produce the desired result while he is lead, by small degrees, to the inevitable conclusion. The conceit of a man who lives by stringent rules is always appealing because we know that sooner or later the rules will be broken. The real art of a story like this is to follow the tension between his rigid rules and his better impulses, prodded and manipulated by a skillful female heroine. (Less) Channel: vimeo
