Just over the wall from the wall can be seen the columbarium or dovecote - see ill. 38, which was built in the time of the Templars but had fallen into disrepair by the time the Hospitallers took over, this is confirmed in an account of the property written by John-de-la-Haye in 1313. Although very feint now, there is a Latin inscription over the door which in The Gentleman's Magazine of 1907, p.635, the Reverend John Webb stated read in abbreviated form: The full version is, " Anno Domini millesimo trecentesimo vicesimo sexto factum fuit istud columbare fratrem Ricardum", which in translation reads, "In the year of our Lord 1326 this dovecote was built by Richard", - see ill. 39, this is thought to be somewhat of an exaggeration and probably means that he repaired the dovecote in 1326. John Webb also remarks that on his visit he also noticed another inscription in the interior of the dovecote which read, "GILBE RTVS", whoever Gilbertus was remains a mystery, perhaps he helped Brother Richard in the restoration of the building? Webb describes other stones carved with, "the double cross of the Templars, accompanied in one instance with the letter R, of the scriptorial form". The upper part of the roof is 'dished' which allowed rainwater to feed through an opening into a round cistern on the floor, this then supplied the pigeons with drinking and washing water, Bond, 2004, p.151. Inside there are 20 tiers each consisting of 33 nesting holes which gives a total of 666 holes.
The Knights Templar were given land in Llangarewi by King Henry II in 1180. The Ministry of Taxation has revealed plans to introduce individual tax numbers for every citizen. The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church says the project is evil, for the bar code used by tax officials contains the fiendish number, 666. Ce mouvement ne véhicule absolument aucunes idéologie, et ( à part pour acheter des habits et accessoires trop chers ) ne demande pas d'argents à ses adhérents. Ce n'est donc, en aucun cas, contrairement à ce qu'essaye de nous prouver les moult reportages et articles à ce sujet à la télé et dans la presse, une secte sataniste, ni même une pseudo religion. Il est triste que les gothiques soient montrés du doigts dans les affaires de profanations de tombes etc. En effet, malgré sa noirceur, le gothique n'est pas méchant, bien au contraire. Il prône la paix, il aime le calme, l'amour, Il aime la mort, c'est vraie, mais c'est une fascination, elle représente quelque chose de mystérieux, quelque chose qui peut faire mal, mais qui peut également être beau. N'aller donc surtout pas imaginer que, par son goût de la mort, le gothique va s'amuser à tuer quelqu'un juste pour le regarder mourir ! De plus, pourquoi un gothique s'en prendrait- il à une tombe vu qu'il est, dans la plus grande majorité des cas, athée et respectueux des autres et des cimetières qu'il trouve beau ( ce qui est légitime quand il s'agit du cimetière du père Lachaise « possibilité de le visiter sur Internet »). Etre gothique, c'est se maquiller et s'habiller d'une façon que des personnes pourraient confondre avec un déguisement, aller à des fêtes, des festivals etc qui sont consacrés aux gothiques. Mais toutes personnes se considérant comme étant gothique ne sont pas forcément reconnaissables dans la rue. Car être gothique c'est également une façon de penser, d'agir, bref, une façon d'être. D'autre encore ne sont pas gothique dans leur tête mais leurs idées, leurs œuvres, sont reprises par cette sous culture. Certains disent que l'individualité est un aspect fondamental. La diversité, les multiples facettes sont la clé de ce mouvement culturel. Mais essayer de définir ce qu'est la Culture gothique est impossible, surtout en si peu de temps. Ce que nous allons donc vous présenter n'est pas une définition de ce mouvement, mais quelques éléments importants sur les gothiques et l'origine de ce mouvement. Les origines : Le mouvement gothique est apparu entre la fin des années 1970 et le début des années 1980 au Royaume-Uni. À la fin de l'année 1983, la sous-culture gothique a son existence propre et devient indépendante du punk dont elle pouvait être considérée comme un des multiples courants dans les années précédentes. Le mouvement gothique s'inspire du cinéma expressionniste allemand, du fantastique et du roman gothique La littérature : La littérature gothique est courant littéraire qui apparaît à la fin du XVIIIe siècle et qui touche à la fois au roman noir et au fantastique. Le plus souvent se déroulant dans un cadre moyenâgeux avec des couloirs sombres, des dédales, des cavernes, des abbayes, des cryptes, des mausolées, des cachots, des jardins peuplés de statues fantomatiques... Tant d'éléments propres au cadre médiéval. Une atmosphère donc mélancolique, inquiétante et superstitieuse. La littérature gothique est inspiré des légendes celtiques mais aussi du folklore allemand et nordique. Les personnages des romans gothiques sont bien souvent issu de stéréotypes : jeune fille persécutée, homme déchiré entre Raison et Passion, mis dans des situations récurrentes : usurpations, persécutions, viol, meurtre, vengeance, prémonitions, rêves... La naissance du roman gothique est associée à une redécouverte de l'architecture gothique médiévale dans l'Angleterre de la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle, Horace Walpole, noble et homme politique anglais, se fait ainsi construire un faux château médiéval. Ce retour à la mode du Moyen Âge, caractéristique du romantisme, entraîne l'arrivée du thème du château hanté dans la littérature anglaise. Mais c'est avec Les mystères d'Udolphe, 1794 que le genre accède à un large succès populaire. Au tournant du siècle apparaissent des romans caractérisés par une atmosphère d'horreur plus prononcée : Vathek, conte écrit en français par William Thomas Beckford en 1786, puis le célèbre Moine de Matthew Gregory Lewis (1796). On peut également rattacher à cette période le Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse du polonais Jean Potocki, également écrit en français. En 1818 paraît le célèbre Frankenstein de Mary Shelley, un roman charnière profondément enraciné dans la tradition gothique et considéré comme le prédécesseur de la science-fiction. Par ailleurs, le courant gothique, s'il a eu une grande importance à la fin du XVIIIe et au début du XIXe, ne s'est pas complètement éteint après cette période. En effet, c'est en 1897 seulement que Bram Stoker fait paraître "Dracula" que le cinéma a rendu si célèbre. Dans la même période, Huysmans écrit "Là-bas", roman dans lequel un moine célèbre des messes noires. Des écrivains contemporains continuent à faire vivre le genre. Parmi eux, Anne Rice et ses "Chroniques de vampires" dont le premier tome a été adapté au cinéma en 1994 Le Cinéma Gothique : C'est en France et surtout en Allemagne que l'on peut placer les origines du cinéma gothique Ce genre apparaît dès les débuts du cinéma. On considère communément Georges Méliès comme le créateur du genre, avec des films tel que Le Manoir du Diable en 1896 et La Caverne Maudite en 1898. Le genre sera véritablement lancé grâce au cinéma expressionniste allemand avec, pour les plus connus, Le Cabinet du docteur Caligari ( de Ribert Wiene ) et Le Golem (Der Golem de Carl Boese et Paul Wegener) en 1920. C'est en 1922 que sort Nosferatu le vampire ( F.W. Murnau), probablement l'œuvre la plus importante dans l'émergence du genre. L'ambiance particulièrement morbide du film et la terrifiante prestation de Max Schreck dans le rôle de Nosferatu auront un impact considérable sur le cinéma gothique En 1931, Universal Pictures produit trois films capitaux dans l'évolution du cinéma d'horreur : Dracula de Tod Browning( Bela Lugosi ) , Frankenstein de James Whale et Docteur Jeckyll et Mr. Hyde de Rouben Mamoulian. Le succès de ces trois films pousse Universal à produire d'autres films de monstres - que l'on nommera les "Universal Monsters" - entre 1932 et 1948, dont certains sont aujourd'hui des classiques, tel que La Momie (The Mummy - 1932) de Karl Freund, L'Homme invisible (The Invisible Man - 1933) de James Whale (d'après le roman de Herbert George Wells), et surtout La Fiancée de Frankenstein (The Bride of Frankenstein - 1935) du même réalisateur. Depuis, on ne compte plus les films de vampires, de sorcières ou autre qui sont largement inspirés par la littérature gothique Les films d'horreur : L'exorciste, Massacre à la tronçonneuse, la colline a des yeux , saw, the descent, etc ... Les films fantastiques : Le seigneur de anneaux, donjons et dragons, willow, dark crystal, legend, les films de Tim burton, etc La Musique Gothique : La musique est un élément essentiel de la culture gothique. Le metal reste actuellement la principale musique écoutée dans ce mouvement Historique : Après l'explosion du mouvement punk en 1976 et 1977 sont apparus au Royaume-Uni une multitude de groupes de musique comme Bauhaus et Siouxsie & the Banshees. On appel ce mouvement musical post-punk. En dehors de leurs origines punks, ces groupes partagent des influences venues du rock des années 1960 avec des groupes comme The Doors On ne parle pas encore de « gothique », bien que ce terme ait été utilisé par les journalistes pour qualifier cette musique, mais de « positive punk » Un look qui, à l'époque, reprend les classiques punks comme les crêtes mais exclusivement en noir et blanc En 1980, une seconde vague de groupes commence à émerger. On peut citer The Cure et The Sisters of Mercy. Ce sont ces groupes qui vont donner les fondements du mouvement gothique. L'année 1985 marque un tournant de la scène gothique avec la séparation de plusieurs groupes majeurs, comme Bauhaus et l'arrivée sur le devant de la scène de groupes plus rock (là où les fondateurs étaient plus punk ) avec des groupes comme Dead can dance et Cocteau Twins Au milieu des années 1990, des passerelles commencent à se former entre les musiques gothiques et le metal et donne naissance au gothic metal. L'ambiance des chansons est sombre et mélancolique. Le thème principal est le romantisme et la mort. On peut y trouver des chants féminins ou des voix masculines appelées grunt. Ce sont des voix graves et gutturales qu'on peut rencontrer dans le death metal.
