Ron Ely, ainda sem sonhar que um dia imortalizaria o personagem na televisão, sempre foi um homem perseverante e disciplinado na busca da concretização de seus objetivos. E para surpresa de Sy Weintraub (diretor da série), o jovem Ron conhecia detalhes dos livros de Tarzan, e por isso adotou uma caracterização mais acadêmica do personagem do que feita pelos atores anteriores.
Os primeiros episódios foram filmados no Brasil e os demais no México. As gravações das primeiras aventuras foram caóticas devido a chegada da temporada de chuvas na América do Sul. Ainda assim, foram possíveis tomadas importantes como de Tarzan nas Cataratas do Iguaçu e na tripla fronteira da Argentina, Paraguai e Brasil. O produtor da série - Weintraub - disse na ocasião: "Essas cataratas convertem as do Niágara numa gota de água. Não há nada que se compare. Os espectadores irão apreciar".
Entretanto, as difíceis condicões de gravação, a presença de disenteria, mosquitos e pragas, desmoralizavam qualquer um, além de provocar mais gastos do que o previsto. Depois de vários meses, apenas cinco episódios haviam sido gravados e o orçamento de 450 mil dólares já estava quase acabando. Weintraub então mudou as gravações para o México.
Ely recusou-se em ser substituído por dublês nas cenas mais perigosas, como combates corporais com animais selvagens, locomoção, travessias de pântanos utilizando-se apenas de cipós, pulos e mergulhos de altíssimas cachoeiras. Mas estas cenas de ação e aventura de Ron Ely exigiam demais de seu físico avantajado. Muitas vezes ele atuava sentindo terríveis dores, quase que insuportáveis, advindas das conseqüências dos momentos de tensão e de ação exigidos pelos diretores. Mas nunca deixou de asseverar: "Tarzan é o papel que venho esperando a vida toda".
Mas esses "detalhes" jamais abalaram Ron Ely. Com ele, um puma infligiu-lhe uma terrível cicatriz no calcanhar. Ademais, um leopardo rasgou-lhe a perna esquerda e um leão mordeu-lhe a fronte (pegou cinco pontos no local), arrastando o ator pelos pés por vários metros. Ely ganhou diversos ferimentos, mas admitiu: "É uma questão de honra. Eu realmente acredito que posso dominar esses animais". E não foi só isso. Ron Ely, certa vez, lesionou o nervo da coluna cervical, pinçando-o em virtude da protusão do disco causada pela força compressiva no pescoço, enquanto carregava um ator e um bote afundado ao mesmo tempo. Também machucou o rosto e queimou os braços e as pernas enquanto atravessava um corredor estreitíssimo repleto de chamas flamejantes. Outra vez, Ron Ely deixou escapar o cipó numa de suas travessias por entre as árvores durante uma seqüência, caindo de uma altura de mais ou menos 10 metros. Sua cabeça e ombro foram os amortecedores do impacto do corpo, que caiu inconsciente.
Por conta de prejuízos e danos como esses, Ron Ely teve garantida uma apólice de seguro no valor de 3 milhões de dólares, pagos pela produção.
"Se é algo que eu sinto que posso fazer, eu devo fazer sozinho", disse Ely. "Não é bom vender algo que não seja verdade. Eu quero fazer com que o telespectador acredite que eu sou Tarzan". E Ron Ely realmente convenceu, não obstante as escoriações, os hematomas, os tombos, as fraturas, os cortes, os machucados e os inúmeros riscos à sua integridade física e à própria vida. Um ator extremamente profissional, preocupado com o respeito e a opinião de seus fãs e dos envolvidos nas filmagens.

The American civil rights movement opened possibilities of empowerment to a new generation. Feminism simply extended that to include equity for the 51% majority of the human race, namely women. 1970's pop culture reflected society's struggle to grasp a new, modern, full-range woman. Comic books were in a renaissance through young counterculture creators with more sophisticated stories, art, and outlooks. What better place for higher concepts of new female power than the turbo-amped fantasyscape of superheroes?

About ISIS: The first all-female band signed to a record deal was Goldie & the Gingerbreads in 1964. They tore up New York, toured with the Stones, and won world acclaim. But they were only able to record a few singles, which faded under record label incompetance. (Fanny would later be the first all-female band to make full albums, in 1970.) They split, only to go in parallel paths. Goldie became Genya Ravan, leading the eclectic and funky rock band, Ten Wheel Drive. Guitarist Carol MacDonald and drummer Ginger Bianco forged ISIS, an all-female octet of progressive funk-rock. They made three albums between 1974 and 1977. Musically they were the equal of anyone, from Blood Sweat & Tears and Chicago, to Earth Wind & Fire and Parliament. But they were too ahead for the times to handle: an all-female group of varied ethnicities and orientations, likewise bending every music style like taffy. They were the future, right now, as it should be.
