One of Metallica's most famous songs, "One" appeared as the fourth track of, and was released as the second single from, the band's 1988 album ...And Justice For All. Metallica won their first Grammy Award in 1990 for "One", winning Best Metal Performance.
"One" was written in November, 1987 by Metallica's principal composers — rhythm guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. The song was released in 1989 as the second single taken from the album (the first being "Harvester of Sorrow").
Before any music begins, there is a series of sound effects with a battle theme for the first 17 seconds of the track; an artillery barrage is heard and continues slightly after the music begins. The song starts off with a clean tone guitar intro by Hetfield before Kirk Hammett comes in over the top of Hetfield with a clean-toned solo. The song speeds up after Ulrich's drums come in and continues until each chorus, when the guitars become heavy and distorted before returning to clean. There is a second solo by Hammett halfway through the song, before lyrics cut out and the song gradually gets more heavy and distorted until the "machine gun" guitar build up (played alongside two bass drums) before the final - often highly praised - guitar solo by Hammett, and a final highly technical duel solo by Hammett and Hetfield.
"One"'s opening A-G modulation was written by Hetfield based on an idea prompted by the song "Buried Alive" by the band Venom.
" I had been fiddling around with that A-G modulation for a long time. The idea for the opening came from a Venom song called "Buried Alive". The kick drum machine-gun part near the end wasn't written with the war lyrics in mind, it just came out that way. We started that album with Mike Clink as producer. LIVE PERFORMANCE:
"One" is a favorite of many Metallica fans, and thus is a fixture of the band's live shows. When played live, the song is usually played with guitars tuned down by one semitone (a permanent fixture of their Studio and Live work since the post-Black Album era) and is preceded by pyrotechnics and the same sounds of war such as machine guns, bombs exploding and helicopters as heard on the recorded version. MUSIC VIDEO:
"One" was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created. The music video directed by Bill Pope and Michael Salomon debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video is almost entirely in black & white, and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, written and directed by Dalton Trumbo, adapted from a book of the same name and authored by the director. Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character in the novel. Bonham is confined to a hospital and is sustained via a tube after suffering catastrophic injuries from a mortar shell (although a land mine is mentioned as the cause of injury in the song lyrics) during the First World War. Although he survived, the explosion caused incredible loss of limbs, including both his arms and legs, along with most of his face including his eyes, nose and ears leaving him blind, deaf, mute and almost completely immobile.
Metallica bought the rights to Johnny Got His Gun so they would be able to use it exclusively for the video for "One". I cannot change the name or I lose the videos, as well as the great, supportive comments I've received.
I am not deaf. I was inspired to learn from my cousin & my ASL instructor, both of whom are deaf, as well as from a friend's child. I am not an interpreter, although that may be a route I chose someday when my children are older. I have a long way to go to become even close to fluent in ASL, so I admire those that are. I also took classes to learn Signed Exact English (S.E.E.) as some schools here use SEE to teach young children who are also learning to read. Signing here is not enough practice versus having real conversations with someone who is deaf; that is the best way to learn.
I started signing to songs with my daughter for fun, then did my friend's fav song for her birthday ("My Wish"). My email couldn't handle the video, so I popped it up here. I never intended, nor imagined, that it would start getting thousands of hits and people would start requesting that I try their fav songs. I would have redone that video ASL appropriate if I had known! I will someday, but for now, I keep it here because I did it with my friend in mind, not the 29,000 other people :-)

I am not deaf. I was inspired to learn from my cousin & my ASL instructor, both of whom are deaf, as well as from a friend's child. I am not an interpreter, although that may be a route I chose someday when my children are older. I have a long way to go to become even close to fluent in ASL, so I admire those that are.
I also took classes to learn Signed Exact English (S.E.E.), not out of disrespect for Deaf Culture and ASL, but because I wanted to learn to communicate on all levels. SEE is used in schools (at least in my area) to teach young children who are also learning to read. In fact, our local Children's Hospital was looking for SEE interpreters.
I started signing to songs with my daughter for fun, and then did this song, my friend's fav, for her birthday. At the time, I had no idea how to use or incorporate ASL into song w/o losing the meaning and rhythm. So, I came up with this novel idea (!) to use the Signed Exact English (SEE) I had just learned. Feeling like I was betraying my ASL teachings, I mixed in ASL signs (not format!) when I thought it worked as well. It was my own 'translation'.
My email to her couldn't handle the video, so I popped it up here. I never intended, nor imagined, that it would start getting thousands of hits and people would start requesting that I try their fav songs. If you do not know the differences between ASL, SEE and Pidgin-Signed English (PSE), pls look the definitions up. ASL is a TRUE language, just as English is. However, that does not mean that people who predominately use ASL do not understand SEE and PSE as well.With ASL you get just the info you need, just not in English word order: "Do you like to drink coffee?" (SEE) vs. "Coffee like you?" (ASL).
Will it really matter if someone saw a SEE sign vs ASL while beginning an ASL class, or now has the courage to talk with someone who is deaf? Learning to sign in any format that gets them going, as long as they know what they are learning & the differences? I tell those about taking classes; on-line resources & books if there are no schools nearby; and most importantly, the BEST way to learn is to talk with someone who is deaf.

I am not deaf. I was inspired to learn from my cousin & my ASL instructor, both of whom are deaf, as well as from a friend's child. I am not an interpreter, although that may be a route I chose someday when my children are older. I have a long way to go to become even close to fluent in ASL, so I admire those that are.
I also took classes to learn Signed Exact English (S.E.E.), not out of disrespect for Deaf Culture and ASL, but because I wanted to learn to communicate on all levels. SEE is used in schools (at least in my area) to teach young children who are also learning to read. In fact, our local Children's Hospital was looking for SEE interpreters.
I had finished a year of ASL & had just completed SEE classes, when I did this video. I started signing to songs with my daughter for fun, and then did this song, my friend's fav, for her birthday. At the time, I had no idea how to use or incorporate ASL into song w/o losing the meaning and rhythm. So, I came up with this novel idea (!) to use the Signed Exact English (SEE) I had just learned. Feeling like I was betraying my ASL teachings, I mixed in ASL signs (not format!) when I thought it worked as well. It was my own 'translation'.
My email to her couldn't handle the video, so I popped it up here. I never intended, nor imagined, that it would start getting thousands of hits and people would start requesting that I try their fav songs. I would have made this video more ASL appropriate if I had known! You would not sing (mouth) the words in ASL; they would not be in English word order; and you certainly wouldn't dance about in light clothing in front of a light background -- not good for true signing!
If you do not know the differences between ASL, SEE and Pidgin-Signed English (PSE), please look the definitions up. ASL is a TRUE language, just as English is. However, that does not mean that people who predominately use ASL do not understand SEE and PSE as well. I would describe SEE as using extra signs for all the little "filler" words of a sentence in English word order; changing the handshape slightly from ASL signs (ex. ); and adding signed endings on to signs (-ing, -ly, -ed, etc.). With ASL you get just the info you need, just not in English word order: "Do you like coffee?" (SEE) vs. "Coffee like you?" (ASL).
Times have changed since I did this video; along the way I decided I wanted to incorporate more ASL and less SEE & PSE. In fact, I am awaiting feedback from a good friend and mentor on an ASL song translation. He is a brilliant translator/song-signer (my own term!) who happens to be deaf, so I am honored he has taken me under his wing. My fabulous ASL instructor has also offered to give me advice.
Someday, I will redo this video, but for now, I keep it here because:
1. Mistakes and all, MANY people have asked how they can learn Sign Language, which is the point. Will it matter if someone who watched these saw a SEE sign vs ASL while beginning an ASL class, or now has the courage to talk with someone who is deaf? Learning to sign in any format that gets them going, as long as they know what they are learning & the differences? I tell those about taking classes; on-line resources & books if there are no schools nearby; and most importantly, that the BEST way to learn is to talk with someone who is deaf.
2. I did it with my friend in mind, not the 54,000 other people :-)

They were going to sing it first, so they needed to learn the words as well (thus the reason I am using my voice). I'd love to show the children doing the final version themselves (and very well!), but cannot show their faces here. Note: The sign for "world" only goes around once; I drew it out to match how long the word is sung. My story: To begin, I chose my YT name so that my friend could find it easily -- & I could remember it! It just made sense. However, now that it's found it's way to over 29,000 people, I don't like that it sounds like I'm an expert selling something. I am neither. I cannot change the name or I lose the videos, as well as the great, supportive comments I've received. I am not deaf. I was inspired to learn from my cousin & my ASL instructor, both of whom are deaf, as well as from a friend's child. I am not an interpreter, although that may be a route I chose someday when my children are older. I have a long way to go to become even close to fluent in ASL, so I admire those that are. I also took classes to learn Signed Exact English (S.E.E.) as some schools here use SEE to teach young children who are also learning to read. Signing here is not enough practice versus having real conversations with someone who is deaf; that is the best way to learn. I started signing to songs with my daughter for fun, then did my friend's fav song for her birthday ("My Wish"). My email couldn't handle the video, so I popped it up here. I never intended, nor imagined, that it would start getting thousands of hits and people would start requesting that I try their fav songs. I would have redone that video ASL appropriate if I had known! I will someday, but for now, I keep it here because I did it with my friend in mind, not the 29,000 other people :-) Songs are difficult to translate into straight ASL, as ASL is not in English word order. I am attempting to use more ASL now, but used Signed Exact English (SEE) and PSE a blend of both) when I did this one. I know I can't please everyone, so all I can say is that I am making the effort to communicate on all levels, in a way that I truly enjoy. All I know is what I am reading from all of you: people who were touched to see a beautiful visual aspect put to their special song. That it helped express their love, or let go of one; deal with the loss of a grandparent, a friend; recall their faith; start a new life; their wedding song; courageously battle disease as they fight for their life; bravely fight to protect ours... Countless people asking how & where they can learn ASL. These are the reasons I'm doing this, and will continue...Thank you so much for the support. My best, ~Lauren (Less)
