He began classical piano lessons at the age of nine and saxophone by twelve. His interest in jazz was sparked by seeing John Coltrane perform live in New York City clubs such as Birdland, the Village Vanguard and the Half Note. Throughout high school and college, Liebman pursued his jazz interest by studying with Joe Allard, Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. Upon graduation from New York University (with a degree in American History), he began to seriously devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist. In the early 1970s, Liebman took the leading role (as President) in organizing several dozen musicians into a cooperative, Free Life Communication which became an integral part of the fertile New York "loft" jazz scene in the early 1970s and was funded by The New York State Council of the Arts and the Space for Innovative Development. After one year spent with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz fusion groups, Liebman secured the saxophone/flute position with the group of John Coltrane's drummer, Elvin Jones. Within two years, Liebman reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him. These years, 1970-74, were filled with tours, recordings and the incredible experience gained by being on the band stand with two masters of jazz. At the same time, Liebman began exploring his own music-first in the Open Sky Trio with Bob Moses and then with pianist Richie Beirach in the group Lookout Farm. This group recorded for the German based ECM label as well as A&M Records while touring the U.S., Canada, India, Japan and Europe. Lookout Farm was awarded the number one position in the category "Group Deserving of Wider Recognition"in the 1976 Downbeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll. In 1977, Liebman did a world tour with pianist Chick Corea followed up the next year by the formation of the David Liebman Quintet with John Scofield, Kenny Kirkland and Terumasa Hino as featured sidemen. After several world tours and recordings by the quintet over three years, he reunited with Richard Beirach. They began performing and recording as a duo, as well as creating the group Quest in 1981. Beginning with bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster, the group solidified when Ron McClure and Billy Hart joined in 1984. Through 1991, Quest recorded seven CDs, toured extensively and did many workshops with students worldwide. Liebman's present group formed in 1991 includes guitarist Vic Juris, bassist Tony Marino and drummer Marko Marcinko. With these musicians he has pursued an eclectic direction in recording projects that has ranged from jazz standards to Puccini arias, original adaptations from the John Coltrane and Miles Davis repertoires, original compositions in styles ranging from world music to fusion, always maintaining a repertoire that balances the past, present and future. Over the past several decades, Liebman has often been featured with top European musicians such as Joachim Kuhn, Daniel Humair, Paolo Fresu, Jon Christensen, Bobo Stenson and in the World View Trio with Austrian drummer Wolfgang Reisenger and French bassist Jean-Paul Celea. His reputation in Europe has led to big band and radio orchestra performances, such as with the WDR in Koln, Germany, the Metropole Orchestra of the Netherlands and the new music Klang Forum in Vienna, Austria playing music specially commissioned to feature Liebman's unique soprano saxophone style. He has consistently placed among the top finalists in the Downbeat Critics' Poll since 1973 in the Soprano Saxophone category. As of the present, David Liebman has been featured on nearly 300 recordings, of which he has been the leader and/or co-leader on nearly 100. Well over 200 original compositions have been recorded. His artistic output has ranged from straight ahead classic jazz to chamber music; from fusion to avant garde. (Less)

An exhilarating A4 by Plácido Domingo in the zarzuela aria "No puede ser" from "La tabernera del puerto" by Pablo Sorozábal. In my opinion, Domingo is the undisputed king of the A's. 2.) A wonderfully colored Bb4 by Roberto Alagna in "Pourquoi me réveiller?" from "Werther" by Jules Massenet. 3.) Plácido Domingo sings a glorious Bb4 in "Recondita armonia" from "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini. 4.) Franco Corelli sings an extremely dramatic B4 in "Nessun dorma" from "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini. The most explosive B I've ever heard. 5.) Luciano Pavarotti belts a resonant B4 in "La donna è mobile" from "Rigoletto" by Giuseppe Verdi. 6.) José Carreras sings an amazingly beautiful B4, also in "Nessun dorma." His voice isn't particularly suited for this role, but this B is perhaps my favorite B ever. The warmth of the note is just amazing. 7.) Jussi Björling gives one of his perfect C5's in "Che gelida manina" from "La bohème" by Giacomo Puccini. 8.) Plácido Domingo sings a short but perfectly placed and very taut C5 in "Salut, demeure" from "Faust" by Charles Gounod. 9.) Andrea Bocelli sings one of the most longly sustained, perfectly placed, and downright thrilling C5's I've ever heard in "Di quella pira" from "Il trovatore" by Giuseppe Verdi. 10.) Franco Corelli once again produces an explosive and dazzling note, this time a C5 in a lowered version of "A te, o cara" from "I puritani" by Vicenzo Bellini. 11.) Mario Lanza gives a passionate C#5 in "Granada" by Agustín Lara. 12.) Luciano Pavarotti produces a brilliant C#5 in "Vieni fra questa braccia" from "I puritani" by Vicenzo Bellini. 13.) Juan Diego Flórez sings a perfectly placed C#5 in "Pour me rapprocher" from "La fille du régiment" by Gaetano Donizetti. 14.) Luciano Pavarotti gives an impressive D5 in "Possente amor mi chiama" from "Rigoletto" by Verdi. 15.) Alfredo Kraus gives an even better D5, also from "Possente amor mi chiama." 16.) Nicolai Gedda produces one of the most dazzling notes I've ever heard, a D5 in "Ronde du postillion" from "Le postillon de Lonjumeau" by Adolphe Adam. 17.) Alfredo Kraus produces a short but beautiful Eb5 in "O muto asil" from "Wilhelm Tell" by Gioachino Rossini. 18.) Juan Diego Flórez gives forth a totally stunning Eb5 in "All'udir del padre afflitto" from "Bianca e Fernando" by Vicenzo Bellini. (Less)

A gifted musician, native of San Juan, Puerto Rico and the son of a dance orchestra leader, Elvira began his musical career playing jazz trumpet (after playing piano, alto sax and bass fiddle!) with his father's group and later formed his own orchestra. A meeting with the famous cellist, composer and conductor Pablo Casals led to his pursuing a career as an opera singer. In 1960 Casals finished work on a biblical oratorio for world peace, ''El Pesebre,'' one of the cellist's small body of compositions. Needing five soloists for a recording and tour of the work, Casals heard Mr. Elvira audition and asked him to sing the baritone part. One of Mr. Elvira's most memorable performances of ''El Pesebre'' came in 1969, when Casals, by then 92, conducted it in Jerusalem before an audience of 3,000. In 1966, he participated in the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in New York and was selected by the Dean of the Indiana University School of Music to join their voice faculty. He remained there for eight years and performed leading baritone roles in the opera school's productions. Elvíra maintained his primary residence in Bozeman, Montana, and he became known as a strong supporter of opera in that state. After a year spent performing in Europe, he returned briefly to Indiana before moving to New York and debuting with New York City's Metropolitan Opera in 1978, becoming one of the leading baritones and performed there over 100 times during the next 12 years. In 1974, he made his first appearance with the New York City Opera. He performed with such opera greats as Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, Renata Scotto, Roberta Peters, Marilyn Horne, Cecilia Bartoli, Carlo Bergonzi, Justino Diaz, Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo, who stated Elvira was "By far the greatest baritone in the world." During his career, Elvira sang in France, Germany, South America, Australia, Puerto Rico, Israel and throughout the United States. Among others, he received honors and distinctions like the "Israel Medal", Honor Awards by the US Government, Honors in New York from Governor Mario Cuomo and Mayor Ed Koch. He was the first baritone singing in the opening of the Michigan Opera Theater, as well as the openings of Chang Kai Shek Memorial Theater in Taiwan and the Melbourne Australia Performing Arts Center. In 1967-68 he sang in the world --premiere of Jerome Hines' opera "I am the Way", first in Indianapolis and reprising it at the MET. In 1972 he sang the title role in the world premiere of John Eaton's opera ''Heracles,'' which inaugurated Indiana University's 1,460-seat Musical Arts Center. Among his vast repertoire, his signature role was Figaro in Rossini's"Il Barbiere di Siviglia" (The Barber of Seville) and critics and colleagues alike crowned him "The best Figaro" of his generation. His musicality, solid technique, breathing control (which he developed by many years of trumpet playing) and seamless legato; along with his great acting skills, sets him apart and creates a real admiration from his colleagues, as Jerome Hines documented in his book "Great Singers on Great Singing". Pablo Elvira died in 2000 at 62. The musician, artist, singer and above all great human being is greatly missed.
