Same sex marriage and family
Debates about homosexuality's conflict with Christianity are reducible to God's immutable laws vs. man's laws. To put it simply Christians believe that it is a sinful act that leads to damnation and there are others who consider it to be natural. Good Christians try to obey God's laws because they have faith in him and faith, which has nothing to do with reason, can never be proven wrong. However, if someone of any ideology suggests there is evidence that homosexuality is clearly wrong or not harmful then they should not be surprised when an endless debate about "I know" vs. "I know" ensues. This is not a discussion about mathematics where arriving at an unequivocal proof is possible given an unproved proposition.
Putting scripture aside, the opponents and supporters of same sex marriages have little option but to make generalisations based on observations when trying to establish their argument and yes, in essence, this is what debating is. The problem here is that thought processes from observations to conclusion are influenced by notions of what is "obviously" good or evil. What makes it so "obviously" good or evil? Our exposure to our environment, which includes relationships, interferes with our innate sense of what is absolutely wrong or right so unfortunately we're back to square one. This is yet another example of how conceited we are by positing what needs to be questioned too.
Good is often attributed to things that nurture and bad to what takes away or deprives. These associations have a lot to do with our survival instincts and the distinction between good and evil is not always clear as actions often have both positive and negative effects simultaneously. For example taking abused children away from their families may allow them to grow up in a more caring environment but at the same time it deprives biological parents of their right to raise them.
Today homosexuals are no longer persecuted in the west for their acts but now seek further privileges such as to marry and have children. Homosexuals are trying to emulate the natural family and failing miserably through their grotesque mockery. Children have a right to a father and mother figure, but when a family is torn apart through the loss of one or even both parents through tragedy this is not a violation of children's rights but simply a sad event.
The hackneyed expression "but what about single parents" introduces the argument of single parent vs. homosexual couples argument which is not a valid contrast, as the existence of single parents can come about naturally. Christians are trying to communicate that homosexuality and thus gay marriage and family is not a natural occurrence. Similarly, arguing that homosexuality is observed throughout the entire animal kingdom backfires as animals are observed committing acts such as incest, murder and rape. If we can compare other animals to humans why not compare humans to other animals and say that other animals are capable of wrong too instead of presuming everything other animals do is natural. If naturalness is what is observed from other animals then why not say let the strongest survive in the human race and let the weak die?
Why are women more likely to have custody of children than men who adore their children just as much? How can we on the one hand say that women are better suited to raise children and on the other say that sexuality is irrelevant? Gender roles are for our own benefit and there is anecdotal evidence that boys and girls from birth are drawn to toys typical for their sex. We gravitate to roles we were born for and most comfortable with on life's stage and this is what God had intended.
When we commit an act which may or may not be a sin only someone who knows or is the truth can judge us. To judge requires familiarity of the law, compassion and most of all knowledge. This is what the Bible has taught us. So who created the law? Who has unconditional and infinite compassion? A jury ponders about the knowledge given to them by the court and may never know the truth, but does the Jury know the defendant's most inner thoughts? Only God does.
It is as if absolute morality and knowledge, which is related to the Word - Jesus, are dimensions that form the plane of human existence. Life is meaningless without morality, which is established by God, and we can not live without knowledge, which Jesus uses to Judge, and we can not live without the Holy Spirit, which is right before our eyes. The spiritually blind can not see this because without morality and knowledge they do not know their location so why do they question anyone else's position if they don't know their own?

The American Psychological Association (APA) suggests that the proliferation of sexual images of girls and young women in the media is harming their self-image and development.
An APA Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls examined research papers covering the effect of all kinds of media content including television, music videos, magazines, video games, the Internet, movies, and music lyrics. They also looked at the way products are sold and advertised to young girls.
The Task Force described sexualization as: "when a person's value comes only from her/his sexual appeal or behavior, to the exclusion of other characteristics, and when a person is sexually objectified, e.g., made into a thing for another's sexual use."
The report suggests that the volume of sexualized images has increased as more media content exists over a wider range of accessible technologies, leading to increased exposure and pressure on young girls. Attitudes of family members and friends can also increase the pressure.
"We have ample evidence to conclude that sexualization has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, and healthy sexual development," said Dr Eileen Zurbriggen, Chair of the APA Task Force.
"The consequences of the sexualization of girls in media today are very real and are likely to be a negative influence on girls' healthy development," she said.
They gave examples of images from advertising. One featured a well known female pop star, Christina Aguilera, advertising a trainer. She was dressed in school uniform, with an unbuttoned shirt and licking a lollipop.
The report suggests that the sexualization of girls impedes the healthy development of a girl or young woman in several different areas. For example by undermining her confidence and making her feel dissatisfied with her body, this can result in negative self-image and lead to feelings of shame and anxiety.
Also, a body of evidence now links sexualization with several of the most common mental health problems in young women and girls: eating disorders, low self -esteem and depression. And there is also the increased chance that it will impact a girl's ability to develop a healthy sexual self-image.
The Task Force suggests that parents have a strong influence in this area. They could wittingly or unwittingly be contributing to the problem, or they could protect their daughters by educating them and supporting them to overcome the effects of the negative images they come across in their everyday lives.
They call on all members of the community - parents, teachers, school staff, health professionals to look out for the impact that sexual images might be having on the young girls and women in their care. Schools should teach media literacy and include sexualization topics in sex education, they say.
Among their specific recommendations the APA Task Force suggests that:
- More research is done that focuses on girls. Most research focuses on women. An example would be to examine the effects of interventions that promote positive images of girls.
- Practitioners such as psychologists and teachers are given resources to help them teach young girls how to access more positive images of themselves and counteract the negative effects that the sexual images might be having.
- Media literacy programs are developed and that public health reports include sexualization in their agenda.
- Federal agencies support programs that help girls feel powerful in ways other than to look sexy, for example Web zines and extra-curricular activities.
- Develop media awards for positive portrayal of girls as powerful, able and non-sexualized, for example for the best toy or television image.
- Convene partnerships between government, leading experts and the media to work on the issue.
- All members of communities from school staff to business people promote extra-curricular programs that help young people develop self-esteem based on ability and character and not on appearance.
"As a society, we need to replace all of these sexualized images with ones showing girls in positive settings - ones that show the uniqueness and competence of girls," said Dr Zurbriggen.
"The goal should be to deliver messages to all adolescents - boys and girls - that lead to healthy sexual development," she added. (Less)

Islam is a natural Din (practical and complete code of life) which enjoins tolerance and moderation in everything that matters. The Holy Qur'an states explicitly:
Kuloo waishraboo wala tusrifoo innahu la yuhibbu almusrifeena.
"Eat and drink, but waste not by excess, for Allah loveth not the wasters." (7:31)
Salat (prayer), fasting, zakat (obligatory charity) and hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) are all ritual practices of worship but these too are characterized by moderation. There are occasions when offering prayer is forbidden by Shariah. The observing of fast is tempered by sahr and iftar (having pre-dawn and post-sunset meals before and after fasting). The Shariah has imposed strict restraint on constant fasting without taking recourse to sahr and iftar at a stretch. In order to safeguard one's chastity the institution of marriage has been made compulsory so as to realize the natural urges of biological need. Spending in the cause of Allah is a laudable act but it is conditioned by limits so as to ensure a balanced approach that one may not squander away all and go himself a begging.
There are religions which preach monasticism. But Islam shows complete aversion to this practice and lays stress on familial relations with wife, children, brothers, sisters and parents. It attaches great significance to family values and interacting socially with people at large. It believes in good ethics and morality inwardly as well as outwardly in social, political, cultural, spiritual and other affairs in a beautiful manner. The Holy Prophet (saw) once said: "Nobody with an iota of pride and arrogant will enter paradise."
These words were attributed to him.
"Verily Allah is beauty and likes beauty. Pride amounts to denial of truth and looking down upon the people."
Quran has termed the braying of an ass as the harshest of all sounds. It is stated:
Inna ankara al-aswati lasawtu alhameeri.
"For the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass." (31:19)
As contrary to this the melodious voice of Dawud (as), David, has been described as highly praise-worthy:
Inna sakhkharna aljibala maAAahu yusabbihna bialAAashiyyi waal-ishraqi. Waalttayra mahshooratan kullun lahu awwabun. Washadadna mulkahu waataynahu alhikmata wafasla alkhitabi.
"It was We that made the hills declare, in unison with him, Our Praises, at eventide and at break of day, and the birds gathered (in assemblies): all with him did turn (to Allah). We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and sound judgment in speech and decision." (38:18-20)
It is said of David that when he recited in remembrance of Allah, the mountains joined him and he understood their rhyme and rhythm. As per Muhammad ibn Ishaq the musical voice of David made the hills and bird sing in unison with him when he recited praises in remembrance of Allah. It is also said that Allah bestowed upon him the voice that surpassed all other voices and when recited the psalm the wild beasts would come close to him so much that he could catch them by their neck. David's melodious voice which was gifted to him by his Lord proves beyond doubt that making use of good voice for songs and praises of Allah Almighty is virtuous and rewarding, there being no harm in display of skill of music and melody on joyful occasions.
This is also borne out by the Ahadith. The traditions of the Holy Prophet (saw). Rabi', the daughter of Mu'awwiz ibn 'Afra, said that the Holy Prophet (saw) came to me on the day of my wedding and seated himself on my bed just like other kith and kin. So our Ansar sisters began to play on 'Daf' (musical instrument) and sing in praises of martyrs of Badr. When one of the girls began singing in praise of the Holy Prophet (saw) he stopped her and asked to carry on singing as before.
A'isha Siddiqa narrates that a woman was married to an Ansari man. The Prophet (saw) intervening inquired of the women gathered there whether any of them knew anything of any sport or music.
A'isha Siddiqa narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said:
Let this 'Nikah' ceremony be pronounced loudly on 'Daf' and be held within the premises of mosque.
Playing of 'Daf' (musical instrument) and singing make difference of halal (lawful) and haram (forbidden) with regard to the legality of Nikah by publicizing it openly. Muhammad bin Hatim narrates that the Holy Prophet (saw) said:
The 'halal' is the state of lawfulness of 'Nikah' by openly publicizing it with 'Daf' and singing songs (while haram means doing it secretly and stealthily).
There are people with little knowledge of Shariah who erroneously arrange 'Nikah' silently without producing sound of 'Daf' or songs and they consider it a virtuous act. This is wrong. Virtue lies in obeying the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (saw) observing complete silence on the occasion of marriage and rejoicing not only negates the Sunnah but it also tantamount to violation of the Sunnah as the Holy Prophet (saw) has made it a distinction between the lawful wedding and adultery. The point underlying this provision is abundantly clear that the act of marriage should be publicized so as to let the people know that the man and woman with each other are husband and wife. This purpose is best served by singing songs and playing musical instruments as per practice in vogue. Moreover expressing joy and making merry on such occasions are natural display of pleasure.
A'isha says:
I had an Ansari girl with me. I arranged her marriage. The Holy Prophet (saw) came and asked: "O A'isha! Why is there no song? This Ansari tribe has liking for singing songs on this occasion."
Ibn 'Abbas narrates the tradition that A'isha made arrangement of marriage of one of the Ansari girls related to her. The Holy Prophet (saw) came on that occasion and said: "Have you prepared the bride?" She replied in the positive and he further asked, "whether any singing girl has also been sent along to celebrate the wedding." A'isha replied in negative. At this the Holy Prophet (saw) remarks: "The Ansar people have special liking for songs. You had better send a singing girl to say that we have here come to you and may Allah grant you and us with long life. Practice of the Companions."
Aamir bin Sa'd says:
On a wedding occasion I happened to be with Qarza bin Ka'b and Abu Mas'ud Ansari and saw a party of singing girls there engaged in songs. I addressed the Ansar Companions saying: "O Companions of the Prophet, and warriors of Badr! What is this going on before you?" They replied: "This is all right if you are interested stay and listen to and if not you can leave from here as permission has been give us to sing and make merry on wedding occasions.
Another Hadith is attributed to A'isha. She says:
Allah's Apostle came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Bu'ath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, i.e. Khazraj and Aus, before Islam.) The Prophet reclined on the bed and turned his face to the other side. Abu Bakr came and scolded me and said protestingly, "Instrument of Satan in the presence of Allah's Apostle?" Allah's Apostle turned his face towards him and said, "Leave them." When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I waved the two girls to go away and they left. It was the day of 'Id when negroes used to play with leather shields and spears. Either I requested Allah's Messenger or he himself asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then he let me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, "Carry on, O Bani Arfida (i.e. negroes)!" When I got tired, he asked me if that was enough. I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.
Conclusion
In the light of Quranic injunctions and the sayings of the Holy Prophet (saw), it is amply clear that singing good songs, reciting healthy poetry, playing musical instruments and beating drums on the occasions of marriage and rejoicings over happy festivals do not contravene the Islamic injunctions and this has been the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (saw) and the practice of the Companions all along. This is all but natural outburst of joy and gives genuine opportunities of making outlets of their joys and pleasure. This is also the cultural need of the people with sorrows and afflictions. Everything that according to Quran and Sunnah is commendable needs no further justification to validate the expression of legitimate feelings of joy on the part of the people.
However, some precautions and constraints must be observed positively. The excess of the limits of propriety should not be allowed and case be taken that vulgar and obscene practices are not indulged in and mixed gathering of man and woman be avoided on such occasion. Islam teaches morality and practice of moderation and balance tempered by good and virtuous acts on all occasions. (Less)
