All religions seek to regulate our sex lives, but can they agree what's permissible? This series of 4 programmes explores what the major religions have to say about various forms of sexual activity. The emphasis is on probing representatives of the leading faiths, as well as historians, psychologists and social scientists, to tease out the historical and doctrinal reasons for sexual commandments and taboos.
Episode One: Sex For One
Over the centuries, extraordinary and totally ill-founded claims have been made that masturbation can cause epilepsy, hysteria, insanity and blindness; nuns were once warned that persistent 'self-pollution' might even turn them into men.
Only now is it widely accepted that the majority of the population, male and female, have regularly indulged. But even if masturbation has always been pretty well universal as well as harmless -- that doesn't mean to say that it's a moral practice. Most religions have condemned it, and many still do: as recently as 1975 the Vatican repeated its long-held view that masturbation was 'an intrinsically and seriously disordered act'.
We hear from representatives of the major faiths, who explain whether they consider masturbation offensive to God, if so why and what punishments are laid down. Also contributing are historians, scientists and anthropologists who throw light on the circumstances in which the various faith communities have come to hold the views they do.

Episode Two: Gay Sex
Sheikh Sharkhawy, an eminent and highly respected scholar at the Islamic Cultural Centre in central London has been quoted in Britain's gay press as calling for the 'burning alive' of all gays above the age of ten. This, he claims, will help prevent paedophilia and the spread of AIDS.
This hard-line aversion to homosexuality is not new. In the view of Justinian I, The Christian ruler of the Roman Empire in the first half of the 6th century, homosexuality was such a heinous offence that it provoked God to punish whole populations with famine, pestilence and earthquake. The only fitting penalty for any lawbreaker was castration.
The three religions worshiping the one God, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, draw upon the same biblical sources for their condemnation of gay sex. God is reported to have destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire and brimstone because of the inhabitants' homosexual activities. Also in the Old Testament is the specific instruction: 'If a man lieth with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed abomination, they both shall surely be put to death'.
Episode Three: Marital Sex
All the major religions attempt to regulate the sexual activity of married couples. Down the ages preachers, priests, sages and saints have established rules - when intercourse should be avoided and when it's permissible; what sort of foreplay and genital contact is allowed; what obligations a spouse has to satisfy the other; even whether sex purely for the fun of it is morally acceptable.
Early Christian theologians were extremely puritanical and strict, approving only sex between man and wife when it was aimed at producing babies and where the man was on top. Other positions were deemed 'unnatural' because they were thought animal-like and inverted the nature of male and female, or because they were suspected of preventing conception and therefore contrary to the purpose of marriage. Even if the couple got that lot right but had sex during Lent, they could be made to fast for a year. So strongly did the Church discourage sex for its own sake that for Christians, even today, the very word 'sin' has come to signify first and foremost sexual offence.
Episode Four: Fornication
According to ancient Jewish law, the parents of a new bride had to produce a bloody sheet from the marriage bed as evidence of their daughter's virginity. If the husband accused her of having not been found a virgin, she was to be stoned to death by the men of her city on the doorstep of her own home. There was no requirement that the accuser be a virgin himself.
Anthropologists argue that this tight control over women's sexuality was grounded in economics, not ethics. Female virginity until marriage helped ensure knowledge of who was the father of whom, understandable in a system where descent and inheritance were reckoned through the male line.
According to the Biblical definition, adultery is any illicit sexual intercourse involving a married woman. The extramarital affair of a married man is not in itself a crime in the Bible, if his lover is unmarried. A wife was considered to be the husband's possession, and adultery constituted a violation of the husband's exclusive right to her. (Less)

Composed and choreographed by Dan, danced by Adrienne Fisher, with Alma Cielo on violin, vocals and electric guitar by the composer, the sounds were captured in real time and only altered in that the audio of the city, Brooklyn, and the wind, which swept down and through the roof of one of the tallest buildings, were attenuated to explosive levels rather than their natural state which was overwhelming.
The music was mastered at maximum gain, and because the guitar was burying the violin (a rare occasion if you have ever heard Alma Cielo play), Dan ran it through two pitch shifters on separate faders, thus grabbing her high frequencies and creating the sense of sonic doom on some of the sustains.
After much experiment, the decision was made to use the percussive-explosive wind-dominated camera audio rather than trying to use effects or other means to render the destruction of two cities by fire and brimstone.
Set your volume control to around 4. The idea is not to be subtle. God gave us the perfect set and lighting, and the percussive-explosives may be the greatest dramatic gift of all.
But attenuate your volume sliders; the percussive-explosives can also tear your head, along with your precious ears, right off.
We were fortunate also to have made this video in a universe with the artists who painted these beautiful, whacked out murals and sprayed strategic graffitti all over the place. Any of you who see these videos, please write and identify your work. We will add appropriate credit and will send you stills, including detail at your request.
This is part one of a three part music video. Part two is a more openly spaced dance, giving the dancer the freedom she requested to use the whole section, more than half of the huge roof surface.
Part three is all back lit with heavenly, piercing shafts of sunlight. The dancer's body systematically comes apart, impaled by light.
Little is known of the character Adrienne Fisher dances so well here.
In Genesis, the patriarch, Lot, is given several chances to find even one good man (or, we presume, woman) in the city of Sodom, a metropolis of the most perverse sexual desires and practices, including things we would now consider prison sex---gang rape, extreme gender alterations.

We know a mob wanted sex with two angels of the Lord. We know they were blinded while breaking down Lot's door to get at them. We know God told Lot to escape with his family to the mountains. And don't look back.
Lot's wife looked back, and was turned into a pillar of salt.
The concept of looking back, particularly into the messes of human relationships, runs through the entire present Choreopera, a series of several music videos, a multi-sequential motion picture, a novel, and a screenplay about the eventual genocidal 21st Century War.
Archeologically, these cities (even less is known of the sister burg, Gomorrah, other than its people were at least equally depraved and violent) were on the eastern shore of the Red Sea.
Dan's vision of Lot's wife was that she was actually a closet bad girl, and rather than looking back in "compassion," as the voice over states in our Broadway-show song version, she is merely missing the action.
As with most biblical subjects, particularly those in the Old Testament, there are literally thousands of possible interpretations.
Lot and his two daughters kept climbing. Eventually, because as far as they knew, the three of them were the only humans alive, the daughters conspired to get their father, Lot, drunk, and they then had sex with him so the species might live on.
Seems noble in a way, but everything in scripture is about matters of faith, and lives of Spirit, much much more than anything about life on Earth.
Cutting the whole Choreopera, which basically means dance and song, not the other way around, will take at least through summer 08 if not the whole year or more. Thus, out website is not operational at this writing. We do have a blog, and it will see more action during April 08. Choreopera.blogger.

The man responsible for overblown epics such as Relax and Poison Arrow wasn't giving them the Horn they were looking for. So they didn't have to rein him in? "Au contraire," answers Neil Tennant. "We were trying to rein him out."
In the end, as Tennant and Chris Lowe's new album, Fundamental, proves, they got what they wanted, but it wasn't without a struggle. "We kept saying to him, 'We're making a Trevor Horn album here,'" recalls Tennant. "The reason we started working with him again was because of that tATu single, which was proper Trevor. We thought, 'Oh, he's doing pop again': first of all, a pop record; second, a pop record with two Russian lesbians. I said to him, 'You know, you should only work with homosexuals.'"
The great man's sonic imprint is all over new songs such as Casanova in Hell, Minimal and The Sodom and Gomorrah Show. On the first, the cellos detumesce down the scale seconds after Tennant has sung: "He couldn't get an erection." "Actually, we nearly cut those out," says Tennant, "because we thought they might be too arch." "What's wrong with arch?" asks Lowe. On Minimal, Horn ignores the tenor of the song by pelting it with pizzicato strings that are straight out of ABC's The Lexicon of Love. And on S&G — a giant journey from innocence to depravity to regret — well, Tennant admits he cheated. "We were trying to do a real Trevor there," he says, "and I thought, 'You'd have backing vocals here, wouldn't you?' So I put them on — and it sounds like Dollar."
Tennant in the mood he's in today is unstoppable. Flitting from one subject to another in the space of seconds, he'll marvel at the 24-hour nature and vapidity of contemporary celebrity-mag discourse, then veer off down memory lane about Dollar. "I interviewed them for Smash Hits (which, famously, he once edited). I went and bought make-up at Boots with Thereza Bazar." He's off. "David Van Day is a surviving kind of guy. I know he's got the chip van, but he also tours with a version of Buck's Fizz."
"He was never in Buck's Fizz," Lowe protests. "But there's a kind of weird logic that the guy from Dollar is in Buck's Fizz," reasons Tennant. Do you ever do pub quizzes, Neil? "I've never been in a pub in my life," he splutters. "Although someone said to me, 'You know, everyone who knows you agrees that if they were on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, you'd be the friend they'd phone.'"
They're not always like this. Lowe, cruelly inaccurate though the stereotype of him as monosyllabic and scowling beneath his baseball cap is, can play to it when he wants. And Tennant in picky, guarded mode can be a scary prospect. If the joke's on you, beware; on him, and you can relax. Asked to settle, once and for all, whether it's Pet Shop Boys or The Pet Shop Boys, he pokes fun at his penchant for pedantry. "It's Pet Shop Boys. We confuse the issue by calling ourselves the Pet Shop Boys." He pauses before pouncing. "With a lower-case 't'."
Yet critical reaction to them can also be contrary, and sometimes wilfully ignorant. Quite apart from releasing some of the greatest pop singles of the past 20 years, PSB have also made at least three classic albums, with Fundamental now making it four. Detractors dwell on their apparent archness or snag on the perceived contradiction between their innate melancholia and giddy, hi-NRG hedonism. This misses, surely, PSB's uniqueness, which is that they locate the sadness that always resides somewhere in silliness, and vice versa.
Tennant's droll vocal style has also attracted criticism. "Some people think my voice sounds disengaged," the singer acknowledges. "But I think that gives the songs emotional punch. When people take a song and drag it by the scruff of the neck, they don't necessarily get emotion out of it." On the great new track I Made My Excuses and Left (a very PSB title), the subject of the song walks into a party to discover his lover with someone else. Tennant's delivery of the line "I walked into the room/Imagine my surprise", manages, by being conversational and resigned, to set the tragic scene with visceral power. He once, famously, told the American songwriter Diane Warren: "We don't do passion." By which he meant? "That I'm not Mariah Carey." And you imagine Carey lathering that same line with demented coloratura and know immediately what Tennant means. Warren has contributed a song — Numb — to Fundamental, though she was keen for PSB to cover another of her compositions. The title proved a problem. "She couldn't get why the Pet Shop Boys wouldn't sing Kisses on the Wind," Tennant laughs. "Imagine getting the label to say: 'The great new Pet Shop Boys single — Kisses on the Wind'." (Less)
