"Away in a Manger" is a religious Christmas carol first published in an 1885 Lutheran Sunday School book by James R. Murray (March 7, 1841 - March 10, 1905), but the author of the first two stanzas is unknown. There are at least two major melodies for the song: one, "Cradle Song"[1], more commonly encountered in the United Kingdom; the other, "Mueller"[2], more commonly found in the United States. The tune commonly used in the United Kingdom was written by William J. Kirkpatrick and was first published in 1895. The tune commonly used in the United States was written by James R. Murray and first published in 1887. It is certain that stanza three was added in 1904 by Dr. John McFarland of New York City.
Some have attributed the song to Martin Luther himself. The confusion may have began because Murray published it with the subtitle "Luther's Cradle Hymn (Composed by Martin Luther for his children and still sung by German mothers to their little ones)."
The carol is associated with the tune "Mueller" in some churches and with the tune "Cradle Song" in others. In 2004, John Tavener composed a new setting for the words. This setting was performed at the service of Nine Lessons and Carols at King's College, Cambridge in 2005.

Lyrics
Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, (or "the Babe awakes...")
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle 'til morning is nigh.
Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And take us to Heaven to live with Thee there. (or "And throw us to Heaven...")

Folk Chick lined up for US triumph
A Scots singer and violinist is to be groomed for stardom by the Grammy Award-winning songwriter behind the country group the Dixie Chicks.
Relatively unknown in Scotland, Laura McGhee, 25, has attracted a huge following in America, where she has played to sellout crowds.
The Monifieth-born folk/rock artist has attracted the attention of Jim Lauderdale, who has penned some of the bestselling tracks by the Dixie Chicks, America's biggest selling female band. The trio from Texas has sold more than 30m albums.
McGhee, who hopes to follow in the footsteps of the Scots singer-songwriter KT Tunstall by cracking the American music market, already counts the US tycoon Donald Trump, Alex Ferguson and the Irish music legend Shane MacGowan among her celebrity fans.
McGhee accompanied Lauderdale during a folk showcase event in the American south earlier this year, and is due to record with him in Nashville, the home of American country music, later this year.
"Jim really liked my music and was keen to work with me and do some co-writing" she said. "It is a real honour, as Jim is a huge figure in American music and he has written for the Dixie Chicks, who are enormous in the States, I am hoping to build up a large fan base and crack America, and I hope this will help me."
McGhee added that she was inspired by Tunstall's success. "KT has done incredibly well and is a great example for Scots looking to break America." She said. "It is great that one of her songs was featured in the film "The Devil Wears Prada", and whenever you go into a coffee shop in America, KT seems to be on in the background."
Lauderdale, who has worked with music stars including the English blues singer John Mayall and the country singer Patty Loveless, is convinced McGhee has the potential to become a huge star in America.
"I first became aware of Laura after her manager gave me a CD of hers at the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow". He said "From that, I invited her to perform with me in Memphis, and we have taken things from there."
Her debut album, Green Eyes, has already received widespread radio play and critical plaudits across the Atlantic. "I am getting a lot of support, particularly in the south and Tennessee, which is fantastic", she said. "There seems to be an affinity between traditional Scottish and American music, and audiences really seem to be picking up on that".
One of McGhee's tracks has been included on a charity CD compiled by the American chat show host Montel Williams. "It is for people with multiple sclerosis", and I'm delighted to be part of its success", she said.
The violinist is now looking forward to playing in New York during Tartan Week later this month, which will be her third consecutive performance at the event.
Among the audience last year was Trump, who has invited McGhee to perform at the opening of his new golf complex in Aberdeenshire. "He said 'You're fantastic -- this is what I've been looking for' "she said "he liked the crossover of traditional music mixed with rockier beats"
Later this year, she hopes to record with her fellow Scots violinist Nicola Benedetti. "What we do is completely different, but she is incredibly talented" said McGhee. "It would be great to work with her and do a duet, and I hope that will be happening in the near future, and we can get something definite organised". Despite her admiration for Benedetti, McGhee's biggest musical hero is the veteran country singer Dolly Parton.
"Dolly is a great song-writer, but she doesn't take herself too seriously -- and neither do I. I would love to work with her one day. I think we both want to play music that makes people happy." she said. (Less)

Watch this killer interview and live song from capitalchaos.net also on the bill were God Forbid, Arsis, The Human Abstract & Mnemic. http://goatwhore.net Goatwhore is an American blackened death metal band, formed in 1997 in Thibodaux, Louisiana. Biography In 1997, Goatwhore initially formed when Sammy Duet (formerly of Acid Bath), Zak Nolan and Patrick Bruders began experimenting with black metal. The band's unusual name originated from an experience one of the bandmember's friends had with a stripper. After Acid Bath disbanded, a four track demo was recorded. Louis Benjamin Falgoust II, singer for Louisiana band Soilent Green, started as replacement for Sammy due to a broken jaw and was asked to stay in the band In 1998, they released another demo under Red Sea Productions. In 2000, Goatwhore released their first full length album, The Eclipse Of Ages Into Black. Between 2000 and 2002 the band commenced extensive touring, opening for bands such as GWAR, Mortician, and Immolation. Their second album, Funeral Dirge For The Rotting Sun was released in 2003. A split 7" with Epoch of Unlight was also released later that year. The album would be supported on the Art of Noise 2 tour in the U.S. with Kreator, Vader, Amon Amarth, and Nile. The band's work was delayed in 2003 by an auto accident involving Falgoust, then on tour with Soilent Green. Touring resumed in 2004, this time in Japan. They also opened for Dark Funeral and Zyklon on The Dojo Volume 9. Signing to Metal Blade Records in July 2004, the band started writing songs for what would become their third full length album and their first recording on their new label. Goatwhore released a music video for the song "Blood Guilt Eucharist", which has had play time on MTV2's Headbangers Ball. Goatwhore's debut album from Metal Blade Records "A Haunting Curse" was released September 5, 2006. According to Revolver Magazine, the album was produced by Hate Eternal's Erik Rutan. "Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult" is the first single and video from "A Haunting Curse". It was directed and edited by David Brodsky and can be seen on the My Good Eye production company website ([1]). It first aired on MTV2's HeadBanger's Ball on October 7th, 2006. The broadcast version notably omitted the word "Christ" from the lyric "murdering the slaves of Christ" because it was thought that US broadcasters would not approve that sentiment for air. It was shot on August 6th, 2006 on a Panasonic HD Varicam by Brodsky and Director of Photography Mike Milia. The video primarily features footage shot in the bowels of a formerly submerged US Navy Light Ship currently docked on Manhattan's west side. "Alchemy of the Black Sun Cult" was nominated for Best Video of 2006 on MTV2's Headbanger's Ball. Goatwhore recently finished a set of U.S. west coast tour dates with Sunn O))) and Celtic Frost. In early 2007, they will continue touring with God Forbid, Arsis, Mnemic, The Human Abstract (January), and Byzantine (February) as part of The Chains of Humanity tour. Followed by a tour with 1349. http://myspace.com/goatwhore Line-up * Sammy Duet - Guitar, Vocals (1997-) (Ritual Killer, Vual, ex-Acid Bath, ex-Crowbar) * Louis Benjamin Falgoust II - Vocals (2000-) (Soilent Green, ex-Paralysis) * Zack Simmons - Drums (2004-) * Nathan Bergeron - Bass (2005-) (Scrotesque) [edit] Former members * Ben Stout - Guitar (1997-2002) (ex-Soilent Green) * Zak Nolan - Drums (1997-2003) (Ritual Killer) * Patrick Bruders - Bass (1997-2004) (Crowbar) * Tim Holsinger - Guitar (2002-2003) (Psycho Scenario) * Jared Beniot - Vocals (1997) http://capitalchaos.net (Less)

The Highlanders are based in Grand County Colorado and participate in many local festivals and parades (More) http://www.thecoloradohighlanders.com The bagpipers and drummers of The Colorado Highlanders. The Highlanders are based in Grand County Colorado and participate in many local festivals and parades including the Estes Park Scottish Irish festival in the fall. Here playing Scotland the Brave at the Grand Lake snowshoe festival, Grand County, Colorado. from SkyHiDailyNews: One fine summer day, as parade entries formed to go through Granby, lone bagpiper Mark Feigner picked up his bagpipes and became the only member of a new highland band. Parade goers were fascinated by Feigner's Celtic music. Today, his initial energy for the instrument is carried on through his group, which now boasts almost a dozen musicians - all who are set to perform Saturday during the Grand Arts Council's Concert in the Pines. Since that debut in 2000, many accomplished bagpipers and drummers have joined Feigner's group, including a great deal of youth musicians from the county. Members include Mark Daniel (pipe major), Marc Hann (piper), Denise Robertson (piper), Holly Peck (piper), Nick O'Connor (apprentice piper), and in the drum section: Ryan Gallagher (drum sergeant), snare drummers Ethan Daniel and Noah Ralph, and bass drummer Simon O'Connor. When Feigner's family moved to Texas in 2006, he made sure to pass along the baton to the group's new pipe major and leader, Mark Daniel and Drum Sergeant Gallagher. Daniel said it was an honor to be chosen as the leader. His first goal, he said, was to try to keep the band together and admits the group is still pretty small and in its formative state. He also said he enjoys seeing his sons interested in bagpiping music, "an expression of our heritage," and "being able to pass on to them something they can participate in throughout their lives." With piano and music lessons under his belt, Daniel found himself moved to learn the bagpipes once he began researching his heritage. He visited Estes Park for the Scottish/Irish Highland Festival and said "the sound and energy was tremendous. That sparked something from within that I can only describe as innate or genetic." He was inspired to track down an instructor, which is when he met Feigner. Daniel said it takes some time and a "bit of commitment to play the pipes well." Once players learn the basics and learn to play the practice chanter they can move up to the pipes, "and then the real challenge begins." He supposes the Highland bagpipes can be classified as a woodwind instrument, since the chanter has a double reed, and said the three drones (bass and two tenors) have reeds as well. Since bagpipe music is most associated with the Scottish and Irish, Daniel said the group tries to preserve those cultures by playing traditional tunes, passing along the culture through education, and dressing up in kilts (and all of their accessories) for public performances. Daniel said each member plays an integral part in the group and the sharing of ideas is encouraged. Although everyone in the band probably can relate to many different inspirations, he believes that a common influence among them all is the music itself. "Listening to, learning to play, and preserving the genre is what inspires most of us." Some of the band's members have extensive collections of pipe music, he added, as well as works by traditional Celtic bands and rock groups, and individual musicians who play the pipes and drums. Most of the sets by the Colorado Highlanders are marches, but the group is also learning some jigs (including "The Foxhunter" and "Paddy's Leather Breeches"), reels and strathspeys Daniel said, "to keep things lively." Of course, he added, members always are tuned up to play familiar songs people usually associate with the bagpipes like "Scotland the Brave and "Wearin' of the Green." The Colorado Highlanders Pipe Band encourages new members to join, and urges "closet pipers" to get those instruments out of storage and join in the experience. The group practices at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evenings in the Middle Park High School band room. Saturday's performance will be the Colorado Highlanders Pipe Band debut at the Grand Lake Community House, and, although each member undergoes various levels of the performance jitters, Daniel said, "It is always fun to be a part of these events andto contribute to our communities." http://www.skyhidailynews.com/article/20080118/AE/864044476 Balcony cam footage from grandcountydave (Less)

"He said 'You're fantastic -- this is what I've been looking for' "she said "he liked the crossover of traditional music mixed with rockier beats" Later this year, she hopes to record with her fellow Scots violinist Nicola Benedetti. (Less)

The song has had lasting appeal and is often heard in retro clubs and on 80s compilation CDs.
Composition
The song begins with Celtic-style fiddle played over a drum beat, with the bass guitar and piano providing accompaniment. An extended version has an additional intro of a Celtic fiddle solo, playing the Irish song "Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms", by Matthew Locke. The bridge of "Come On Eileen" features an improvised counter-melody which begins in a slow tempo and gets faster and faster over an accelerando vocal backing. The chord sequence of the bridge is actually the same as the verses but transposed up by a whole tone.Throughout the song, there are numerous tempo changes and key changes:
Chart success
In the British charts, the song spent four weeks at number one in August 1982. This success was repeated around the globe; spending five weeks as the Kent Report's number one in Australia and reaching number one in April 1983 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song was also successful in Ireland, where it reached number one on the charts and spent a total of eleven weeks in the charts.
It is a common example of a one-hit wonder in the U.S., as the band failed to reach similar popularity with any of their future songs, though in the UK they had already reached number one two years earlier with "Geno", and went on to have further hits.
In a poll by the UK TV Channel, Channel 4, the song was placed at number 38 in the 100 greatest number 1 singles of all time.[2] A similar poll by the music channel VH1 placed the song at number 3 in the 100 Greatest One-hit Wonders of all time.[3]
Cover versions
The song has been covered by several artists, including the ska band Save Ferris (which replaced the strings with a horn section), heavy metal Skyclad, French art band Nouvelle Vague, the Atlantic Canadian folk rockers Kilt, Blackthorn, the Japanese band nil, and Badly Drawn Boy. In June 2004 in the UK, the tune was used for the song "Come on England", by a group of football fans calling themselves "4-4-2". The song was intended to support the England football team during the Euro 2004 competition. In 2006, a cover version by Hermes House Band was released as a single in France. The song was also sung by David Spade and Chris Farley in the movie Tommy Boy. Another version has been released by the band Fall Out Boy.
References in popular culture
The AFL Footy Show showed the music video of "Come On Eileen" in the 'Sam's Mailbag' part of the show as Kevin Rowland was a look-a-like to co-host Garry Lyon. After the music video was performed, another video was shown with hosts Garry Lyon (as Kevin Rowland), James Brayshaw (as Banjo player), Sam Newman (as Violin player) and Trevor Marmalade (as Accordion player) performing a copy of the original video as themselves.
The song features in the film The Rainbow Warrior
The title of the song was mentioned in an episode of Will & Grace. Grace has bought a dog against Will's will, and when trying to convince him to keep the dog, she says "Come on, Eileen!"
The song was used as the Space Shuttle Discovery crew wake-up call in August 2005, on STS-114 Flight Day 14, in honour of the flight commander, Eileen Collins. The ground control team selected the song to remind the crew "that it is time for your return back home to planet Earth" (a return which turned out to be delayed by a day due to weather).
The phrase "Come On Eileen" is used as the refrain in the song "Me and my Black Metal Friends" by Atom And His Package.
The song was used in the film Tommy Boy, during the scene with Chris Farley and David Spade singing in the car.
The song's title was parodied in Clerks as a porno film titled "Cum On Eileen". There is also a real porn site with this title.
The song was used briefly in the hit British cult sitcom Spaced, starring (among others) Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson.
This song is one of the '80s tunes that can be heard in the arcade game compilation Namco Museum 50th Anniversary Arcade Collection, for the PS2, Xbox, GameCube and PC. This song is used in the PS2 game singstar 80's edition.
In The Simpsons episode "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" Lisa remarks that Homer's barbershop quartet, the Be Sharps, beat Dexys Midnight Runners for a Grammy Award to which Homer replies, "Well, you haven't heard the last of them." This is an ironic reference to Dexys Midnight Runners' one hit wonder status in the US. (Less)

The bagpipers and drummers of The Colorado Highlanders. The Highlanders are based in Grand County Colorado and participate in many local festivals and parades including the Estes Park Scottish Irish festival in the fall.

from SkyHiDailyNews:
One fine summer day, as parade entries formed to go through Granby, lone bagpiper Mark Feigner picked up his bagpipes and became the only member of a new highland band.
He also said he enjoys seeing his sons interested in bagpiping music, "an expression of our heritage," and "being able to pass on to them something they can participate in throughout their lives."
With piano and music lessons under his belt, Daniel found himself moved to learn the bagpipes once he began researching his heritage. He visited Estes Park for the Scottish/Irish Highland Festival and said "the sound and energy was tremendous.
That sparked something from within that I can only describe as innate or genetic." He was inspired to track down an instructor, which is when he met Feigner.
Daniel said it takes some time and a "bit of commitment to play the pipes well." Once players learn the basics and learn to play the practice chanter they can move up to the pipes, "and then the real challenge begins."
He supposes the Highland bagpipes can be classified as a woodwind instrument, since the chanter has a double reed, and said the three drones (bass and two tenors) have reeds as well.
"Listening to, learning to play, and preserving the genre is what inspires most of us."
Some of the band's members have extensive collections of pipe music, he added, as well as works by traditional Celtic bands and rock groups, and individual musicians who play the pipes and drums.
Most of the sets by the Colorado Highlanders are marches, but the group is also learning some jigs (including "The Foxhunter" and "Paddy's Leather Breeches"), reels and strathspeys Daniel said, "to keep things lively." Of course, he added, members always are tuned up to play familiar songs people usually associate with the bagpipes like "Scotland the Brave and "Wearin' of the Green."
The Colorado Highlanders Pipe Band encourages new members to join, and urges "closet pipers" to get those instruments out of storage and join in the experience. The group practices at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evenings in the Middle Park High School band room.
Saturday's performance will be the Colorado Highlanders Pipe Band debut at the Grand Lake Community House, and, although each member undergoes various levels of the performance jitters, Daniel said, "It is always fun to be a part of these events andto contribute to our communities."

THE MINSTREL BOY by Thomas Moore
The Minstrel Boy to the war is gone
In the ranks of death you will find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;"
Land of Song!" said the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy rights shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free,
They shall never sound in slavery!"
An emotionally stirring and inspirational song, The Minstrel Boy was written by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) who set it to the melody of The Moreen, and old Irish aire. It is believed by many that Moore composed the song as a memorial to several of his friends he had met while a student at Trinity College and who had participated in the 1798 rebellion of the United Irishmen. One died in prison, another was wounded, and a third captured and hung. The song originally consisted of two verses. Due to its popularity, the song was a favorite of the many Irishmen who fought during the U.S. Civil War, primarily on the Union side. It was at this time that a third verse was added by unknown authors:
The Minstrel Boy will return we pray
When we hear the news we all will cheer it,
The minstrel boy will return one day,
Torn perhaps in body, not in spirit.
Then may he play on his harp in peace,
In a world such as Heaven intended,
For all the bitterness of man must cease,
And ev'ry battle must be ended. (Less)
