And now, in 1979, very few of the living were willing to move either. Had they become tired or too almost famous? Fallen in love or given up? discovered their niche, looking for a fix, settled, called it quits? Some, yes- were turning rebellion into money-though I didn't know any of them personally, running as we did in different circles...
But the rest?
Good thing Oscar -"The secret of life" he taught me
"...is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly, terribly deceived..."
...Yeah... By which time I figured out, music wasn't going to change me, but maybe-if time was still on my side-the music might just save me, which was all I'd ever asked for in the first place.
And why I needed to go north. But how? Alone would be too dangerous and futile-more would be safer, but how many? Would be better...
Banner night, everyone in-Darby and gargoyles, and Hellin, even Trudi- and fan clubs and boyfriends, even Mary thereabouts, Lorna(Lorna!), Pat, Pleasant in petticoats, fourth estate Flip Side, zealots of every stripe, the pterodactyls, the new recruits; the suburbs in turmoil, the beaches in flame, the kids on the march from north and south and east and west.
...and to think...
Of the days, just a few hundred days earlier, when there were just 99 of us-if that many at all, still, a banner night is just what I needed.
...a few hundred days... later I find no takers, no one to join the journey, no members for my quest "The Clash?..." some answer listless-or merely defeated? "...when?... Monterey-wow-that's too far..."
Except for Brian.
The best of our generation "Cool..." he lit up "Sure, we'll go" with no hesitation, with no questions...
Soulful and silent, the fearless white boy- true seditionist- and always up for the fight, foot in the grave the other in heaven...
Was it fate or plain ol' synchronicity that finally allowed me to track him down, in Chinatown-alas fate-owes us no explanation. And thus, we were going...
Going to Monterey.

"We on?"
"Yeah" Brian was always of few words "We're on"
Though the few he did-were ones he kept.
And because counting down the hours always depends on what fills the wait on Wednesday night I re-read Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as prelude to viewing Apocalypse Now at the Cinerama Dome...
They were goddesses.
Yeah, ok... so I have a vivid imagination-you know they weren't? But I know they were
...goddesses...
like the ones I'd read about as a child-which was how I recognized them in the first place-live, tall, walking, talking, breathing goddesses-switchblades...chains...'n' leather jackets...
They, cast in the molds of diamond and moon glow, polished by comets, burnished in absinth, colored by dreams'n'flames'n'nightmares'n'sweet soul music...
They- were...
Diana warrior goddess, protectress of the rejected. Whose temples in days of old gave sanctuary even to slaves. Of course they were Diana, feminine symbol of creative insanity-that of poets and writers...
And the Norse underworld's Hel-who ruled over those unfortunate enough to die of sickness and old age as opposed to gloriously in battle. Or "Mania" -Etruscan goddess of the dead, mother of ghosts and otherworldly creatures, and my favorite, own private Itzpapalotl, the skeletal, clawed-butterfly deity of the Aztecs, she the queen of Tomoanchan, locus of human creation.
They-the ethereal, they the god-like, they-girls of the bigBeat Olympus-sundry mythical lairs, la Jolla and Santa Monica, and Holloway and the Canterbury and the Tower... maybe 20- no more.
Though amongst ourselves, the seditionist boys who admired them-they were known simply as "real girls"
When we'd storm the gates of heaven...
Who ya' think will lead the charge?
But the rest...
The pterodactyls... the Fiorucci jeans, the high-end Hello-Kitty, the smart skirts, the razor cuts, the smell of clean sheets and tidy rooms and private schools-well, they might've come down to Chinatown for adventure-but...
..."you gotta take their money..." Gerber had taught us and which more often than not actually worked- Certainly better than working for tips at the bathhouse on Melrose. $75 or even $100 wasn't worth missing a night of fun.
Thursday September 6 1979- Minute 0
...Lets see, what I need, what WE need, is a sponsor, like a Formula-1 race car. Hell, we'll splotch their name all over Brian's car, we'll name the whole event after her. Her? Has to be, no straight guy'll go for it. Let me take an inventory. So far Brian will drive, I don't know how much money he has, probably none, anybody with a Mustang GT cannot possibly have any money, not if they're busy building a stash....where are we going to find the money?
And the waterboy gig won't do. Cool working in torn jeans but management wanted somebody they can "rely on"
So it's time to empty the ol' pockets of every jacket and torn-knee 501, under all the coffee tables, at every foot of every bed, decipher every torn shreds of telephone directory, napkin, matchbook cover...analects of the hardcore...
Yeah, but the clock was still ticking
...might as well all in all... begin dialing for dollars.
Most were outdated (the pterodactyls in question would probably see me thrown to wild pigs), some just smudges, most bad memories and only the last month's worth.
When it hit me...sure...
I recognized the scrawl. Fresh face, just outta high school and her energetic friends, looking for big trouble, maybe a little more....
Well, she might've not made many mistakes in life, but trying her luck in Chinatown made up for the ones she didn't. Going down to the crossroads-the poor dear-was only the beginning, blinded-headlong, the upcoming traffic...
Sure, the kid should've stayed home, but she wanted more and more and more and more; didn't they all? Didn't we all?
Why did revolutions have to be such messy affairs?
But Chinatown was the worst time of all places and with no love in the equation.
...good sign...she was awake when I called..."Hi, yeah its me... right... hi!... "...don't givem' time to say no..." Gerber had taught me... )
...Listen, wanna go to Monterey and see the Clash? Yeah, the Clash. It's their last concert. They're gonna break up. Yeah, sure, it's the last chance ever to see them..." (small talk is the worst talk, especially with clocks-a-ticking...)
"...But, we don't have any money-I mean for gas that is...You mean your parents aren't home for the weekend- cool..." (Less)

It started out as a studio project. The very first release was a EP on the underground label of Dance Opera, including Cream, W.O.O.W., Cowmen, Back To The House Of Pain. 1997 In april 1997 Milk Inc.'s first song with the name "La Vache". It wasn't a success in Belgium, but in the UK and France, they loved this record! So Milk Incorporated couldn't profile itself as a studio project anymore, but as a real group. Vocalist Jade 4 U (aka Nikkie Van Lierop) and producer Regi Penxten performed a lot in the UK and France. In France, they released under the label Hottracks of Scorpio Music France. Because they had so much success with "La Vache", the recordcompany decided to rename the group into "La Vache", so people could remember it! In October '97, a second song "Free Your Mind" was released! Because Jade 4 U was also the frontgirl of Praga Khan, she left the Milk Incorporated as Praga Khan became very popular in the USA. Sofie Winters took her place for a few months. 1998 "Inside Of Me" was released in February '98. This time, the vocalist was Ann Vervoort. The song was popular in the clubs, but there was no commercial success. In March, they released a first album in France, with the name "Apocalypse Cow", still under the name "La Vache"! In December '98, they finally got a huge hit with "In My Eyes". The Belgian breakthrough was a fact. With this release in Belgium, they changed their name to Milk Inc. Some highlights on this album are the ballad "November", the duet between Linda and Silvy which is called "I Don't Care", the duet between Regi and Linda called "Maybe", but also the only instrumental song on the album called "Blown Away" is a nice piece of art. Monterey-wow-that's too far..." Except for Brian. Wednesday, September 5, 1979 "We on?" "Yeah" Brian was always of few words "We're on" Though the few he did-were ones he kept. But I know they were ...goddesses... like the ones I'd read about as a child-which was how I recognized them in the first place-live, tall, walking, talking, breathing goddesses-switchblades...chains...'n' leather jackets... Though amongst ourselves, the seditionist boys who admired them-they were known simply as "real girls" When we'd storm the gates of heaven... Thursday September 6 1979- Minute 0 ...Lets see, what I need, what WE need, is a sponsor, like a Formula-1 race car. Cool working in torn jeans but management wanted somebody they can "rely on" So it's time to empty the ol' pockets of every jacket and torn-knee 501, under all the coffee tables, at every foot of every bed, decipher every torn shreds of telephone directory, napkin, matchbook cover...analects of the hardcore... Yeah, but the clock was still ticking ...might as well all in all... begin dialing for dollars. But Chinatown was the worst time of all places and with no love in the equation. ...good sign...she was awake when I called..."Hi, yeah its me... right... hi!... "...don't givem' time to say no..." Gerber had taught me... ) ...Listen, wanna go to Monterey and see the Clash? Yeah, the Clash. It's their last concert. They're gonna break up. Yeah, sure, it's the last chance ever to see them..." (small talk is the worst talk, especially with clocks-a-ticking...) "...But, we don't have any money-I mean for gas that is...You mean your parents aren't home for the weekend- cool..." (Less)

A couple years ago I saw a show about past generation lesbian woman, with interviews.
Two women probably in their 80's were telling how they had lived the picture of normality, marrying men (who never knew) and raising children with them. The two women had met each other late in life, after their husbands had died, and in those much more relaxed and understanding times had decided to become partners and stop living a lie.
One of the women talked about she had grown to really love their husband as the father of their children, as a person, and in many ways a life partner - but that she could never really love him completely or feel true love for him.
So I called this Selfless because that's what hit me most about these woman, or I guess really anyone who lives a lie.
Not because they act selfless, though they might be. But selfless in that they have, through their life, negotiated away their self and have nothing left there.
I think we have all taken at least a few steps down that road.
And I guess some of us had no other road at all.
Lyrics:
---------------------------------------
- Selfless
Think I was born knowing how to lie
and seems like half a life since I
Amended my evil ways, but the guilt only grows
with time and after all, I can still slide the lie:
I love you I love you with all my heart.
Not to say things aren't what they seem
Spend your life believing a dream
Not for me - real lies replace dreams
dreams and hold me awake, here's a little taste:
I love you I love you with all my heart.
Too late for me to stop it now
I've gone too far too long any how
Deceiving you until the end of your
life - it's the price for being born to lie
I love you I love you with all my heart.

Sorry for the lack of live video.. this one was a project, and I am new to music editing and stuff. I didn't want to add video editing onto it yet. Plus stereo conversions generally mean image quality is going to take a huge hit.

Making Stereo Videos
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
Special thanks and props go to the brilliant doctorcastille:
http://www.youtube.com/user/doctorcastille
He worked out how to best upload higher quality sound, even stereo, and it's a boon for the youtube musician community.
Conversions and formats and editing:
---------------------------------------
My videos are usually MPG's and they get converted to WMV by Windows Movie Maker (which is free with XP - Hit your START button: Start-All Programs-Accessories-Entertainment). And that WMV (windows movie format) file is what I normally upload. For stereo though, you want to convert it one more time to an FLV (Flash Video) file.
To make this video (in Windows Movie Maker) I just pasted in the audio track (mp3, that I created using Audacity, a free sound recording/mixing/editing package, google it to get for free, or hit eBay for CD's with effects and stuff bundled in for a few bucks). With audio set, I then added pictures, so there was no starting video (MPG file) like usual, but when I was done the process was the same - Save Movie File as small high quality output. And of course th output was a WMV file.
For stereo, though, here's the basic steps:
---------------------------------------
- Get a copy of 'Any Converter Professional' (google it, it's free as long as you are converting things under 3 minutes).
- Use it to convert your video file to FLV (you have to select that as your output type), and then upload that to youtube.
You could use another converter to create an FLV file. If you find one that works well, I would love to know about it.
Note:
Eddie629 sent me a note about Xilisoft FLV Converter...it has a limit time of 5 minutes in their trial instead of 3 minutes and it actually seemed to do a better job with the video in my quick and un-uploaded test.
It's here:
http://www.xilisoft.com/flv-converter.html
Eddie is awesome, his profile is here:
http://www.youtube.com/Eddie629
Post note on this - I couldn't get it to work. Probably because I couldn't get the settings right, or maybe I should have tried a different input video, but I kept getting invalid file. Any Converter Pro still works though. If you do get the Xilisoft working, please let me know.
Notes:
---------------------------------------
The final FLV file must be under 100MB in size, or Youtube won't take it. To get the file size smaller, you will likely have to give up some video quality. You can also give up some audio quality (lower the sampling rate), but it's not going to save as much space.
In this case, I guess my flv conversion did change the audio somewhat. I uploaded the original MP3 on myspace and to me it sounds better. Or maybe it's streamed differently(?) - plus there was also the Windows Movie Maker conversion when I saved to WMV file and that might have made the difference. Still learning.

There are no words, I must warn you - there's only the music, which I have done. And we're waiting on the lyrics.' And because we had such a wonderful relationship on our tour I said to John, 'Well, I'll listen to it. I'll break my rule.' And thank God I did, because the moment he played the music to me, I got goose pimples, and I told him, 'I don't care what the words are. I'll do it.' And fortunately the words were great." In the sixties composer John Barry did share a bachelor pad with Michael Caine. In Caine's autobiography, he recalls being kept awake, off and on, till dawn one night. He found Barry slumped over the piano having just finished Goldfinger. Harry Saltzman, the Bond producer, hated the Goldfinger theme and much of the rest of what Barry came up with - John Barry said: "Harry would start with, 'This is crap!' And it went downhill from there." es. In an actual survey among Bond fans about all Bond films, Goldfinger won in multiple categories including soundtrack. The music is by (More) The Rhythm Divine Music by Boris Blank and Lyrics by Billy MacKenzie First released in 1987, Shirley Bassey sings the vocals to this track in a collaboration with Swiss band Yello. The music is by Yello, a band consisting of Boris Blank and Dieter Meier with backing vocals recorded by co-writer Billy MacKenzie. The vocals were recording at Yello's studio in Zurich. Background The Swiss group Yello have produced some of the sharpest electro funk of the past two decades. Fusing a camp disco sensibility with a kitsch sense of humour, they are the cuckoo clocks of pop. In 1987 the besuited and moustachioed Yelloman Dieter Meier sent a tape of their music to Shirley Bassey. "I have to admit, much to our surprise, she got back in touch with us and said she'd like to work with us" Meier said. "So we could not refuse. Drafting in ex-associates Billy Mackenzie as lyricist and co-collaborator, 'The Rhythm Divine' was written especially for the Tiger Bay diva. Billy MacKenzie worked with Yello on several occasions, he died in January 23rd 1997. "Shirley Bassey has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard and a strength as a performer that's rare" praised Meier. Bassey flew over to Yello's Zurich studio and recorded her vocals in under 40 minutes, arriving an hour late for the session, Meier missed it completely. The song seemed to bridge the generation gap. "Working with her made everything valid with my mum and aunties" said Billy Mackenzie, whose backing vocals were overdubbed an astonishing 90 times. "It's smoothed out those family wrinkles" brooding and sensual, rhythm is the perfect music for pleasure and was unlike anything Dame Shirley had done before. In comments about this song Shirley Bassey showed that she obviously did not like the results. Maybe at this time she was not ready for this musical style. At a concert in the Royal Albert Hall following the release of the Yello album she introduced the song by saying "this is how this song should have sounded". I presume she meant with a live orchestra. But most of her fans agree that this song is among her best and also the recording quality is uniquely outstanding. It was the outstanding track on Yello's album 'One Second' and also appeared on the Reader's Digest Collection This Is My Life. It would have made a great James Bond theme. Ten years on, history repeated itself ten years later when Bassey again hit the charts in collaboration, this time recording History Repeating with the Propellerheads. You know that my tears, have kept me awake The longer you're gone, I'll hunger and shake From Warsaw to Rome, I'll wait out of time With you in my heart The Rhythm Divine So won't you come close, bring this to an end With each winter rose, my love I will send So tender the night, when you hold me tight With you in my heart The Rhythm Divine With you in my heart The Rhythm Divine You know that these tears, have kept me awake The longer you're gone, I'll hunger and shake From Warsaw to Rome, I'll wait out of time With you in my heart The Rhythm Divine The Rhythm Divine The Rhythm Divine With you in my heart The Rhythm Divine (Less)

Beautiful and innocent, suitable and militant/
Are scripted on the walls of the cubicle I'm living in/
I'm different, if you take away that I'm gone/
A heart on my sleeve, with a razorblade jacket on/
In Babylon I would hold my breath and listen close/
To the ghosts of death the ocean kept when the winter froze/
Skin and bones, is what my burly bag of flesh will hold/
Digesting hope with another thirty pack as Lexapro/
Discomposed, from all the fuckin' ghosts that follow me/
Across a battered path of shattered glass and broken arteries/
It's oceanography the way the blood accumulates/
I'm rude awake, with one eye open like Homer's Odyssey/
And honestly, I don't need to make a difference/
I just want to live my life without a fee to pay admission/
Apathetic bliss in these apathetic days/
Cuz I'm apathetic mixed with the pass aggressive ways/
Anesthetic sprays from my tongue 'til the pain stops/
I'm trying to figure out if this is blood or the raindrops/
Love or a safe spot, think twice/
While I take another shot until the angels start to sing like.../
I've got a bone to pick with all these skeletons in closets/
They're breaking down the barriers, embellishing my losses/
And under all the verses, I wonder if it's worth it/
And whether it's irrelevant, the elements are constant/
No sleep and apparently a pen/
Is the perfect combination for the therapy again/
So I scribble in a pad 'til it carries me within/
All the ripples in my past that I carefully attend/
When all I got to do is take a look into my pedigree/
And mentally amenities will make another memory/
The penalties are lending me a bitter loss of energy/
A destiny of inhibition until my wings will set me free, now/
No time for regrets, keep moving forward and hope for the best/
Its all gone, I'll say so long and never let go of what I hold in my chest/
This is dedicated to the dedication left behind/
Me, a dedicated mental patient on a bed of knives/
I meant to find a certain person worthy of current purpose/
Searching through the epitaphs to make the dead alive/
And edify as I watch all the faces walking by/
Painted with perplexing looks, abrasions and awkward eyes/
Showing me to modify broken wings I've taught to fly/
Often I go and dream of a place across the sky/
Where I reside and dark breaks the light/
Never stop moving, a sharks way of life/
Set still as sparks drape the sky/
And debt builds, a heart pays the price with /
Love, pain, sun, rain, (I remember when my mother used to lie to me)/
hate, grace, blood stains (and I remember when my father used to lie to me)/
Life, death, time, rest, (and I remember when my teachers used to lie to me)/
this is my breath (and then they wonder why I have no faith in this society)/
I can't find stability I lack the right ability/
To act inside humility and magnify the will in me/
Every time I try to be, satisfy or feel at ease/
I'd rather be an actor and to act than try to deal with things/
Until I fall and I hit the rock bottom/
And I grieve with the leaves 'til I pray its not autumn/
The blood starts to draw and it falls from the wrists/
When the slits are across and I ball up a fists/
So call it a gift but I'm not living for the present/
When it all becomes the past and I can't listen to the questions/
Isn't it a blessing when I feel like I'm alive/
And I don't have to be another fucking cynic for a second/
[I remember somebody once asked me if I ever thought about regret... the answers no. Because when this masquerade is finally over I want to be remembered for who I am. Not who I was or who I wanted to be, cuz this right here, this is me, so follow this]
Even though I've never called it perfect/
When I die, I want to know it all was worth it/
I want to know that I tried my best with/
Embracing every moment that I was blessed with/
Every life, every death, every time that I wept/
Every moment, every person, every line that I said/
Every night, every day, every time every place/
Every kiss, every wish, every side of the maze/
Every cut, every bruise, every love that I'd lose/
Every time that I broke and the times that I grew/
Every drop of rain that these clouds would spew/
To help form the man that I amounted to/
And I'm thankful, that I am who I am/
And I've been where I've been and I came out grateful/
When it's finally time to make an exit/
Just know, that I don't regret a single second/
This is the exception to everything/
This is the exception to everything/
