It accepts detachable 10-round box magazines or 20-round drum magazines. Both types of magazine are made of polymer, and drum magazines have their rear side made from translucent polymer for quick determination of the number of shot shells left. The latest version of the USAS-12 is capable of fully automatic fire. [edit] History The history of the USAS-12 shotgun dates from the 1980s vintage designs of Maxwell Atchisson. In about 1989, Gilbert Equipment Co. (USA) decided to bring up the selective fired weapon, broadly based on principles, employed in Atchisson shotguns. The design of the new weapon was produced by John Trevor Jr. Since Gilbert Equipment Co. had no manufacturing capabilities, it started to look for possible manufacturers. It turned out that the only maker that agreed to produce this weapon was the South Korean company Daewoo Precision Industries, a part of the high-tech Daewoo conglomerate. Daewoo engineers adopted the new weapon to their manufacturing techniques, and mass production commenced in the early 1990s. This gun sold well to military and security forces of several (unspecified) countries in Asia, and more than 30,000 of USAS-12 shotguns were made by mid-1990s. Perhaps this is because, as a representative of the Vietnamese association in Phnom Penh suggested, they have too much competition from the Khmer beggars of whom they are afraid. The decision to go to Cambodia is not only made because of financial need, but also because of financial ambition. More money can be earned in Cambodia, according to many informants, because doing business is not restricted with as many regulations and does not require as much capital compared to Vietnam. But also in day labour or in commercial sex work, more money can be earned than in Vietnam. A Vietnamese girl in a brothel in Kompong Som recounts how she was attracted by her friend's wealth earned in Cambodia: "I followed my friend to come here. She lived in the same village and she had lived in Cambodia before. I saw that she had jewelry and that she had brought money to her home. So I asked her to bring me to Cambodia." Besides the attractions of earning easy money, going to Cambodia can for some be a welcome escape from their situation at home. Several women interviewed wanted to be away from their husband, boyfriend, or family and therefore going to Cambodia was an attractive option to them. Often, these women had negative experiences being divorced, violated or betrayed. One Vietnamese woman said: "My husband and I were divorced and I was very sad. I did not want to meet him anymore. So I came here. There was no-one who forced me to come here." Going to Cambodia is a chance to get away from the sad experiences and to live in a completely new environment. Although this escape is often seen as temporary, they hope to benefit from it emotionally as well as financially. For others, the excitement of having some fun or having some adventure and change in their life is the prime reason to come to Cambodia. A 28 years old prostitute in Svay Rieng commented: "I heard that it is great fun living in Cambodia. I wanted to enjoy myself, so I decided to come here." A Vietnamese woman in a karaoke shop summarized why, according to her, Vietnamese are coming to Cambodia: "There are many complex problems in our society that we cannot understand. There are some people who come here because they were sad, because they had problems. Others came because they were very poor... In Vietnam there are very rich and very poor people. There are mainly the poor people who come to Cambodia... Here one can work for other people and earn much more money than in Vietnam... But [the young girls] mostly were deceived to be sold here." VIETNAMESE WOMEN TRAFFICKED TO CAMBODIA A better known purpose of recruiting Vietnamese is the recruitment, often deceptive or exploitative, of women and girls for prostitution in Cambodia. The recruitment processes in these cases are more similar to what was described in the survey on trafficking of Cambodian women and girls to Thailand. Unicef writes that "criminal groups" which are "highly organized, extremely violent, and often involved in other criminal activities" sometimes control the trafficking in women. Since this survey was geographically limited to Cambodia, it was not possible to find out about the extent and activities of the "criminal groups" that are involved. A representative of the Vietnamese in Phnom Penh estimated that every month about twenty young Vietnamese girls are brought to brothels in Cambodia. However, another Vietnamese representative in Kompong Som expressed concern about getting too involved in this issue, because "they will hire people to kill me." In this survey, we found that in most cases the recruitment of young Vietnamese women for prostitution in Cambodia operates on a small-scale level. Recruiters target one or a few girls at a time, in order to provide a family member, friend or other acquaintance some extra women in their brothel. The recruiters often approach poor, desperate or divorced women or girls who are receptive to promises of well-paid work in Cambodia. A Vietnamese woman in a karaoke shop in Kompong Som recounted that after her husband left her with her three-year-old child, a woman in her village told her to come with her to work in Phnom Penh. She and five other young women were brought to Phnom Penh, where they were all together sold to a shop in Tuol Kork. Later this woman opened her own shop using the money she got from selling the girls. He is charged with second degree aggravated assault and evading and resisting arrest but he is currently out on a $12,000 bond and he is on paid administrative leave despite what happened. His victim is Tamara Vaughan. She is 18 years old. On Sunday July 22, 2007, She was swimming with family members in the community pool of a gated community. Detective Keith Alfaro was in the pool area smoking a cigar despite a pool rule prohibiting smoking and he was talking on his cell phone. When she asked him not to smoke, he told her "You (racial slur) need to go back to the east side where you belong. Just because you think you have money, you think you can stay where y'all want...If you want to act like a man...treat you like a man." 18 year old Tamara told how he punched her in the face with a closed fist then beat her on her head, neck, chin, and her arms. She said he punched her about 25 times and also choked her. He kept beating her until he finally stopped on his own and walked away. Tamara was taken by ambulance to North Central Baptist Hospital. The investigation of the assault is being conducted by the Bexar County Sheriff's Department. This incident should never have happened. I reported witnessed police brutality in January 1991. Everything was shockingly covered up and since January 1991, I have been under SAPD sanctioned mobbing retaliation. After 9-11, my name was deliberately placed on the 'terror watch list', a cover for SAPD to operate, out-of-control, terroristic stalking and mobbing activities to harm me and to isolate me from anyone who might help me stop the victimization. I am SAPD's 'Poster Victim' on what they can get away with. Here we are in 2007. From the few videos I have uploaded, anyone can see the severe abuse I'm under. Follow me whenever I leave the house and watch as I'm stalked and harassed and threatened wherever I go. My house is not safe either. Twice, my home has been broken into. The first time my pet bird was tortured and killed in his cage. The second time I was home and I was severely beaten and raped. I was told women do not have the right to become Drs. I was forced to open all my locked filing cabinets so my attacker could search them for my triple prescription pads which I told him were not kept in my house. I was threatened with a military hit if I said anything to anyone. I have gone to two physicians for physical problems from that rape. Those around me either avoid me so they won't become victimized or they join in the attack. Those who attack me are confident they can say and do anything to me without accountability. Does anyone not understand the danger 18 year old Tamara Vaughan is still in? Her attacker presumably lives in her neighborhood and he is free on bond. A gated community is obviously not a deterrent or protection from violent assault and racial hatred from individuals in law enforcement. Does anyone not understand that an outside independent task force, NOT the Bexar County Sheriff's Department, NOT any other law enforcement agency/individuals networked with SAPD, needs to investigate what happened to her. What do you think is going to happen to anyone who comes forward as a witness for her? Recall that in January, 2002, an employee of the Bexar County Sheriff's department, Tammy Johnson, came to my home and asked me a substantial number of questions. I now understand the questions were to determine my vulnerability as a targeted victim. She even loaned me a camcorder to record the ongoing abuse. When I told her of my first successful recording of the ongoing SAPD helicopter terroristic flyovers, she couldn't get to my home fast enough to view the recording. She acted shocked and said that she didn't think I was going to be able to record the helicopter and then she left with the camcorder - but a blank tape inside. I switched tapes, not trusting her after the way she acted. I called her later and asked to borrow the camcorder to transfer the tape to a videotape to take to the San Antonio Police Chief, not trusting Internal Affairs anymore. She refused. She came to my home one more time. She told me she had bad news. She stated to me "They are going to kill you". "They" representing the terroristic stalking/mobbing network. She told me I needed to write my will and to sign my house over to her so that my pets would not be harmed. I refused. I had already paid her $2000 in cash at my bank out of the $10,000 requested to stop the terroristic stalking. She left angry. Later she called. She requested again that I pay her $10,000. I refused. She asked me if I knew about the woman who had been killed by two rottweilers. I said yes. (For the reader's information, a couple, who owned two Neapolitan mastiffs, hated their neighbor, a single attractive college educated woman. They would encourage their large dogs to act aggressively towards their neighbor who they hated so much until one day the dogs attacked and killed their neighbor). Bexar County Sheriff's Dep't employee, Tammy Johnson, then said "That should have been you those rottweilers killed. You are so passive you deserve to die". What she knew but you the reader does not know is that I have scarring on part of my upper lip and under my chin where I was bitten in the face when I was a child by the neighbor's dog and I was terrified for years of dogs I did not know until I learned quite a bit about dog behavior. I am a strong advocate for owning a dog and adopting that dog from the city pound where personally I feel the irresponsible owners should be, not the pets they treated like trash. Since then there was a brief news article in the San Antonio Express News about her. On January 22, 2005, she was stopped @2:35am for driving 65mph in a 50mph zone. She was the second Bexar County Sheriff's deputy charged with a DWI for that month. The officer who stopped her also noted a smell from the car raising his suspicion of the use of an illicit drug. Her supervisor in the Bexar County Sheriff's Department was at that time Amadeo Ortiz, the brother of then SAPD Police Chief Albert Ortiz. The Bexar County Sheriff is Ralph Lopez. He was with SAPD for 34 years before retiring and becoming Bexar County Sheriff. In an San Antonio Express News article August 3, 2007, author Ken Rodriguez stated that Detective Keith "Alfaro proclaims his innocence" and quoted another officer as saying "He felt his safety and the safety of his family was threatened." The majority of the City council, including the mayor, made the wrong one." This article is important. Clearly self serving police officer members of the union are going to use resources available to them to influence who will be elected to City Council. San Antonio Express News writer Rick Casey in a January 12, 2003 article asked "The police union's action committee is one of the largest contributors to the City Council. Will council members react in the light of the day as reasonable employers, or as paid agents?" According to the article the nurses said in police affidavits that they did not immediately report Ramirez to police because they feared retaliation. One of his victims told him she was going to report him and he replied "Who's going to believe you? I'm a cop." I think what is important is that the nurses were so afraid of retaliation. He was arrested in Floresville on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The very public terroristic stalking by air by San Antonio police officers using police helicopters began on September 27, 2001. At or about 11:45 a.m. on that date, I observed a helicopter flying in the clear blue sky heading West above a small greenbelt area behind my home. The helicopter caught my attention for several reasons: I don't recall seeing a helicopter in the almost twelve years that I had lived at my residence before this date; air space was under restrictions due to the terrorists' September 11, 2001 air attacks on the U.S.; and it was less than three weeks from the horrifying terrorists' attacks of 9-11. I watched from my backyard as the helicopter turned and began heading North and flew over the property parallel to mine and over my neighbor's home. I looked and kept looking for any identifying letters and/or numbers on the aircraft's visible side and tail section but I didn't see any. I observed the helicopter as it flew over and past my neighbor's property, gaining altitude and heading slightly Northwest over the subdivision I live in. Abruptly, the helicopter turned around and was directed in a dive bomb descent over the roof of my home at me in my backyard. I went as far back as I could to the back corner of my fence and was trapped there at my locked six foot backyard gate that gives access to the greenbelt area behind my backyard. I'm grateful for the trees in the greenbelt area protectively backing up to my backyard and the power lines above my back fence. They restricted how low the helicopter could get. The helicopter HOVERED JUST ABOVE the power lines overhead. I read the word POLICE in bold letters on the underside of the helicopter. Then the helicopter after a long hovering, turned in place and headed North again. I ran to my house and grabbed my camera but the helicopter was by then out of sight. I called the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) and spoke with Sergeant Moseley (spelling?) from Internal Affairs. He placed me on hold while he called and spoke with the SAPD Helicopter Division and relayed to me that he was told no SAPD helicopter was in my area at the time I gave him for the helicopter incident. I questioned him. Then where did the helicopter come from? Wasn't anyone concerned over what had just happened? In reply, he gave me the SAPD Helicopter Division phone number to call and talk to someone there which I did. I called the SAPD Helicopter Division and spoke with Sergeant Torres who identified himself as the SAPD supervising staff member of the SAPD Helicopter Division. I could not understand why Sergeant Torres was not concerned about what had happened, especially a helicopter with the word POLICE on its underside, especially considering the heightened state of alert since 9-11 and concern that there could be more air attacks by terrorists. As I spoke with Sergeant Torres, he repeated some of what I said over the phone to an audience he had at his location. I could hear them laughing. They were laughing at me, laughing at my distress, laughing at my fear for the safety of others who could become targets of the unidentified helicopter with the word POLICE on its underside that had just terrorized me in my backyard. Why were they laughing? Why didn't they think that what I told them was alarming? I kept questioning Sergeant Torres until he finally 'confessed' that, YES, an SAPD helicopter was in my area at the time given. He said they were looking for an abandoned vehicle. In my small fenced-in back yard? He said 'they' didn't see me. An OUTRAGEOUS LIE. Anyone who's flown in a plane and looked out the window, while it was daylight, during a take-off and/or landing, is aware of how well 'they' in the helicopter did see me as 'they' were flying just a few feet above the height of typical streetside power lines. I told Sergeant Torres that what 'they' did was terrifying, my heart was pounding when it happened, that it was not funny, and that I could have had a heart attack (family history of heart attacks and strokes), and that what 'they' did was irresponsible. Sergeant Torres' reply was a threatening tirade on how I needed to be supportive of law enforcement and the officers who risked their lives to protect life and property. Sergeant Torres covered up one serious wrongdoing with another serious wrongdoing - badgering me, the victim. There is no doubt in my mind that what the helicopter pilots did was deliberate and self serving in the same way as those who commit acts of violence against children, women, and pets. Sergeant Torres then retracted his 'confession' that I had obtained from him through careful questioning. He told me that the helicopter I saw was not SAPD's but was probably from one of the area cities' police departments. He said SAPD helicopters were royal blue with metal flaking and a gold stripe . I had described the helicopter as turquoise with a white diagonal stripe. Under my additional questioning, he did say that YES the word POLICE was on the underside of the SAPD helicopter. It should be clear to everyone that something is seriously wrong with SAPD if SAPD was not involved. Why wasn't the SAPD Helicopter Division concerned about the actions of that 'NOT SAPD' helicopter, especially since according to the information from Sergeant Torres, the helicopter with the word POLICE on its underside, besides being piloted in what I considered a terroristic action, was also out of its area of jurisdiction??? I called several of the area cities' police departments to identify the city police department responsible for that 'NOT SAPD' helicopter. I received the same answer from all of them: The SAPD Helicopter Division handles the helicopter services for all San Antonio area cities' police departments and also for the Sheriff's Department. That alone should be sufficient proof that Sergeant Torres had told me another OUTRAGEOUS LIE but there was still the problem with the discrepancy in the color of the helicopter. I called area airports. Once they learned SAPD denied involvement, they referred me elsewhere (out of fear of personal involvement?). I called the City of San Antonio Aviation Department Noise Abatement Office @ 210-207-3471 and spoke with Jerry Brinken who identified the helicopter as SAPD regardless of the color discrepancy. He said he could only write up the helicopter incident as a noise complaint and allegedly did so. I called a number given to me as the San Antonio District Office Flight Service Station where flight plans are filed @ 1-800-WXBRIEF (992-7433). I spoke with someone with a name sounding like Woodren (spelling?) who said he could only give me information if I had a call number. I called FAA San Antonio Flight Standards District office @ 210-308-3300. I spoke with 'Gracie' who referred me to 'Gary' who asked me to call him back at 3 p.m. at which time he told me he was waiting on information from Linn Scott (spelling?) and to call him back again at 3:30 p.m. which I did. Gary told me he gave the information on the helicopter incident to the International San Antonio Airport and there was no identification for that kind of helicopter with police written on the underside and no call numbers. There was no consideration given for a helicopter with call numbers that were not easily visible/readable. By calling in a complaint and trying to identify the two San Antonio police officers/pilots responsible for the September 27, 2001 incident, I was targeted for severe and extreme mobbing by air in addition to ground mobbing. The San Antonio Police Department remains unaccountable for its act of air terrorism on a woman alone in her backyard less than three weeks after 9-11. The San Antonio Police Department is frighteningly out of control by the activities it has engaged in to cover up for its police officers wrongdoings. The San Antonio Police Department continues to abuse and misuse resources available to it after initiating and continuing to date a very public terroristic mobbing targeting me as a victim involving collusion of governmental agencies at the local, state, and federal levels and nongovernmental agencies. The terroristic stalking by air, using helicopters, that I have videotaped and identified ownership of, have involved helicopters owned by the Military, the Department of Public Safety, EMS agencies, media agencies, and U.S. Customs as well as ongoing terroristic stalking by helicopters owned by the San Antonio Police Department. For over five years, I have videotaped aircraft, involved in stalking me, flying over my home, my backyard, my FORMER office that I had no choice but to close, over me when I'm driving, in parking lots of shopping centers... I have videotaped fuel dumping over my back yard, terroristic circling, nose dive flying at and over me, and disabling deliberate migraine triggering aircraft sounds. In January, 2002, an employee of the Bexar County Sheriff''s department, Tammy Johnson, came to my home and asked me a substantial number of questions. When I told her of my first successful recording of the ongoing SAPD helicopter terroristic flyovers, she couldn't get to my home fast enough to view the recording. She acted shocked and said that she didn't think I was going to be able to record the helicopter and then she left with the camcorder - but a blank tape inside. She told me I needed to write my will and to sign my home over to her so that my pets would not be harmed. I refused. I had already paid her $2000 in cash at my bank out of the $10,000 requested to stop the terroristic stalking. She left angry. Later she called. She asked me if I knew about the woman who had been killed by two rottweilers. I said yes. (For the reader's information, a couple, who owned two Neapolitan mastiffs, hated their neighbor, a single attractive college educated woman. They would encourage their large dogs to act aggressively towards their neighbor who they hated so much until one day the dogs attacked and killed their neighbor). Bexar County Sheriff's Dep't employee, Tammy Johnson, then said "That should have been you those rottweilers killed. You are so passive you deserve to die". What she knew but you the reader does not know is that I have scarring on part of my upper lip and under my chin where I was bitten in the face when I was a child by the neighbor's dog and I was terrified for years of dogs I did not know until I learned quite a bit about dog behavior. An alternate explanation is that it is due to the prominence of Manga Entertainment, a distributor of anime to the US and UK markets. Because Manga Entertainment originated in the UK the use of the term is common outside of Japan. The portmanteau "animanga" has been used to collectively refer to anime and manga, though it is also a term used to describe comics produced from animation cels. Characteristics Dragon Ball Z (1989) is a popular shōnen anime based on the original manga series which spanned 291 episodes and 13 movies.Anime features a wide variety of artistic styles. They vary from artist to artist or by studio to studio. They are generally characterized by detailed backgrounds and stylized characters in a variety of different settings and storylines, aimed at a wide range of audiences. It is usually coloured and designed to look as realistic as possible. Unlike Manga, which uses slightly exaggerated colours and designs. But, anime fantasy creatures, (e.g witches, spirits etc.) can have exaggerated facial and physical features. But, they will always be designed to look as realistic as possible, and bright colours would be rarely used unless needed to. Genres Anime has many genres typically found in any mass media form. Such genres include action, adventure, children's stories, comedy, drama, erotica (hentai), medieval fantasy, occult/horror, romance, and science fiction. Most anime includes content from several different genres, as well as a variety of thematic elements. Thus, some series may be categorized under multiple genres. For example, Neon Genesis Evangelion might be considered to fall into the genres of post-apocalyptic, mecha, drama, and shonen-ai. A show may have a seemingly simple surface plot, but at the same time may feature a far more complex, deeper storyline and character development. It is not uncommon for an action themed anime to also involve humor, romance, and even social commentary. The same can be applied to a romance themed anime in that it may involve an action element, or in some cases brutal violence. The following is a list of the major genres and designations that are specific to anime and manga.[8] For other possible genres, see film genre. Genres with Western Counterparts: Action/Adventure: Anime that primarily focuses on martial arts, sword fighting, or other action oriented material. Examples: Ninja Scroll. Horror: Anime or manga which contains darker themes or science-fictional characters. Examples: Vampire Hunter D series or Wicked City. Progressive: "Art films" or extremely stylized anime. Examples: Voices of a Distant Star or Byōsoku 5 Centimetre. Demographic Genres: Shōjo: Japanese for 'young lady' or 'little girl'. Refers to anime or manga targeted at girls. Examples: Fruits Basket or Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. Shōnen: Japanese for 'young boy'. Refers to anime or manga targeted at younger boys. Examples: Dragon Ball Z or Digimon. Seinen: Japanese for 'young man'. Anime or manga targeted at teenage or young male adults. Examples: Oh My Goddess!, Outlaw Star or Cowboy Bebop. Josei: Japanese for 'young woman'. Anime or manga that is aimed at young women. Examples: Gokusen. Kodomo: Japanese for 'child'. Anime or manga that is aimed at young children. Examples: Doraemon, Hello Kitty, Keroppi, Pokémon or Panda-Z. Thematic Genres Bishōjo: Japanese for 'beautiful girl'. A blanket term that can be used to describe any anime that features pretty girl characters. Examples: Magic Knight Rayearth. Bishōnen: Japanese for 'beautiful boy'. A blanket term that can be used to describe any anime that features "pretty" and elegant boys and men. Examples: Fushigi Yūgi or most CLAMP shows. Sentai: Literally "fighting team" in Japanese. Refers to any show that involves a superhero team. Examples: Cyborg 009. Robot/Mecha: Anime or manga featuring super robots. Examples: Mobile Suit Gundam or Mazinger Z. Post-Apocalyptic: Anime dealing with a post-apocalyptic world. Examples: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Akira, Wolf's Rain, or Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind Mahō shōjo: Subgenre of shōjo known for 'Magical Girl' stories. Examples: Sailor Moon. Mahō shōnen: Male equivalent of Mahō Shōjo. Examples: D.N.Angel. Moe: Anime or manga featuring characters that are extremely perky or cute. Examples: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar. Expertise: Anime that deals with a specific topic in depth, such as Eyeshield 21 and football, Hikaru no Go and the game Go, Yakitate! Japan and bread-making, etc. Romantic Genres Harem: A genre where several girl characters are attracted to a single boy character (or sometimes to multiple boy characters). It is more often than not a Shonen Anime and may be considered a sub-genre. Examples: Ranma ½ or Love Hina. Reverse Harem: As a Harem anime, but where several boy characters are attracted to a single girl character (or sometimes to multiple girl characters). It is more often than not a Shojo Anime and may be considered a sub-genre. Examples: Ouran Host Club or Fruits Basket. Ecchi: Japanese for 'indecent sexuality', derived from the pronunciation of the letter 'H', (the origin of the term is not well known, even in Japan. See main article for more information.) Contains sexual humor, and some fan service. Examples: Love Hina, Oruchuban Ebichu or He Is My Master. Hentai: Japanese for 'abnormal' or 'perverted'. While Western audiences may use the term to refer to pornographic anime or erotica, in Japan the term used to refer to the same material is typically Poruno or Ero. Examples: La Blue Girl or "Bible Black". Shōjo-ai/Yuri: Japanese for 'girl-love'. Refers to anime or manga that focus on love and romance between female characters. It is often being replaced by the term "Girls Love" (GL). Yuri is like Shōjo-ai, but sometimes involves older characters or explicit sexual activity. Examples: Revolutionary Girl Utena or Kannazuki no Miko. Shōnen-ai: Japanese for 'boy-love'. Refers to anime or manga that focus on love and romance between male characters. The term "Shōnen-ai" is being phased out in Japan due to its other meaning of pederasty, and is being replaced by the term "Boys Love" (BL). Examples: Loveless, Gravitation Yaoi: Like "Shōnen-ai" but often involving older characters and explicit sexual activity. Examples: "Sensitive Pornograph" Some anime titles are written for a very specific audience, even narrower than those described above. For example, Initial D, Wangan Midnight and éX-Driver concern street racing and car tuning. Ashita No Joe, Hajime no Ippo were about boxing. Hanaukyo Maid Team is based on the French maid fantasy. Style While different titles and different artists have their own artistic styles, many stylistic elements have become so common such that they are described as being definitive of anime in general. These elements have been given names of their own. The anime drawing style can be learned, particularly with the aid of books such as How to Draw Manga. Such books come complete with information and instructions on the styles used in anime. A common approach is the large eyes style drawn on many anime and manga characters, credited to the influence of Osamu Tezuka, who was inspired by the exaggerated features of American cartoon characters such as Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse and from Disney's Bambi. Tezuka found that large eyes style allowed his characters to show emotions distinctly. Cultural anthropologist Matt Thorn argues that Japanese animators and audiences do not perceive such stylized eyes as inherently more or less foreign.[1] When Tezuka began drawing Ribbon no Kishi, the first manga specifically targeted at young girls, Tezuka further exaggerated the size of the characters' eyes. Indeed, through Ribbon no Kishi, Tezuka set a stylistic template that later shōjo artists tended to follow. Another variation of this style is "super deformed"; which usually feature huge eyes, an enlarged head, and small body. Other stylistic elements are common as well; often in comedic anime, characters that are shocked or surprised will perform a "face fault", in which they display an extremely exaggerated expression. Angry characters may exhibit a "vein" or "stressmark" effect, where lines representing bulging veins will appear on their forehead. Angry women will sometimes summon a mallet from nowhere and strike someone with it, leading to the concept of Hammerspace and cartoon physics. Male characters will develop a bloody nose around their female love interests (typically to indicate arousal, based on an old wives' tale).[9] Embarrassed characters will invariably produce a massive sweat-drop, which has become one of the most widely recognized stereotype motifs of anime. The degree of stylization varies from title to title. Some titles make extensive use of common stylization: FLCL, for example, is known for its wild, exaggerated stylization. In contrast, titles such as Only Yesterday, a film by Isao Takahata, take a much more realistic approach, and feature few stylistic exaggerations. Distribution Licensing Main article: Anime licensing Anime is available outside of Japan in localized form. Licensed anime is modified by distributors through dubbing into the language of the country. The anime may also be edited to alter cultural references that may not be understood by a non-Japanese person and certain companies may remove what may be perceived as objectionable content. This process was far more common in the past (e.g. One Piece), when anime was largely unheard of in the west, but its use has declined in recent years because of the demand for anime in its original form. This "light touch" approach to localization has proved popular with fans as well as viewers formerly unfamiliar with anime. The popularity of such methods is evident by the success of Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming block, both of which employ minor edits. The "light touch" approach also applies to DVD releases as they often include both the dubbed audio and the original Japanese audio with subtitles, are typically unedited. Anime edited for television is usually released on DVD "uncut," with all scenes intact. Anime has also been a commercial success in Asia, Europe and Latin America, where anime has become even more mainstream than in the United States. For example, the Saint Seiya video game was released in Europe due to the popularity of the show even years after the series has been off-air. Fansubs Main article: Fansub Although it is a violation of copyright laws in many countries, some fans watch fansubs, recordings of anime series that have been subtitled by fans. Watching subtitled Japanese versions, though not necessarily downloaded fansubs, is seen by many enthusiasts as the preferred method of watching anime. The ethical implications of producing, distributing, or watching fansubs are topics of much controversy even when fansub groups do not profit from their activities and cease distribution of their work once the series has been licensed outside of Japan. Television TV networks regularly broadcast anime programming. Cable channels such as Cartoon Network, Disney, Sci-Fi, and others dedicate some of their time slots for anime. Then the Anime Network specifically shows anime. In Japan, major national TV networks broadcast anime regularly. Anime beyond Japan Early anime in the United States The United States saw its first exposure to anime in June of 1961, when Shônen Sarutobi Sasuke (Magic Boy) was released by MGM, followed a few weeks later by Hakuja den (Panda and the Magic Serpent, or The Tale of the White Serpent). Anime then got its running jump in September of 1963, when NBC syndicated a dubbed version of the Japanese series Astro Boy. Not counting such Japanese/American co-productions as The King Kong Show and Johnny Cypher in Dimension Zero[1], only seven more anime TV series were released in the United States in the 1960s. These were 8 Man (1965), Gigantor (1966), Kimba the White Lion (1966), Prince Planet (1966), Marine Boy (1966), The Amazing 3 (1967) and Speed Racer (1967). Speed Racer would be the last anime series released in the United States until 1978 when the 1972 series Kagaku ninja tai Gatchaman was adapted for American audiences as Battle of the Planets.[10] Many anime series that made it to American television from the 1960s through the 1980s tended to be science fiction or action-oriented, such as Star Blazers (the English dub of Space Battleship Yamato) and Robotech and Voltron (both Americanized amalgamations of unrelated anime series cobbled together into a single story). As the 1980s wore on, more anime series and films targeted at very young children also found their way to U.S. TV screens, often on cable television channels or in syndication. Nickelodeon broadcast many mostly Canadian-made English dubs of anime films during its early years, including TV series such as Mysterious Cities of Gold, Adventures of the Little Koala, Belle and Sebastian, The Adventures of the Little Prince, Noozles, Maya the Bee, Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, and The Littl' Bits, many of which were aired on "Nick Jr.", the network's block of programming for very young viewers. The Disney Channel broadcast both of the feature-length anime films starring Osamu Tezuka's famous unicorn character Unico, and CBN redubbed and broadcast its Bible-based anime TV series co-produced with Tatsunoko, Superbook and The Flying House. HBO also showed juvenile-targeted anime on occasion, including TV series such as Tales of Little Women, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Saban's Adventures of Pinocchio and feature films such as Gisaburo Sugii's 1974 Jack and the Beanstalk. A great many anime films and feature-length TV series compilations were also released direct-to-video in the U.S., and were often available for rental at mainstream video stores. Some titles which were distributed in the U.S. in this fashion included Candy Candy, Captain Future, Angel, Serendipity the Pink Dragon, Taro the Dragon Boy, Robby the Rascal (Cybot Robotchi), and Ninja the Wonder Boy (Manga Sarutobi Sasuke). For the most part, though, these TV series and films were not actively promoted as being of Japanese origin; in fact, many of them went so far as to remove most or all Japanese names from the credits except for credits to the animation studios. In the series themselves, character names were often changed and Japanese cultural references removed to make them more accessible to English-speaking audiences, such as Genshi being changed to Flint in Space-Time Detective Genshi-kun. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, this trend began to change as more openly Japanese works, such as Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, Digimon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! achieved mainstream popularity on American television. Although many of these shows did undergo some kind of "Americanization" in the form of character name changes and edits for violence, language, and the occasional nudity, viewers were more aware of the shows' country of origin, which might perhaps pique their curiosity to seek out other works in a similar style. Current reception in the United States AnimeNation's John Oppliger had this to say on the matter: The support for anime among American anime fans is very strong. The availability of anime in America is truly impressive, especially within the anime fan community. Awareness of Japanese animation in America is at an all time high. However, mainstream acceptance of anime in America lags far behind the advances anime has made in other respects. A close examination of the support for anime on American television may provide a revealing and realistic gauge of the actual penetration of anime into America and American culture. Anime may seem like it's tremendously successful in America because its high profile, but the facts tell another story. According to AC Nielsen, Pixar's The Incredibles sold 16 million copies on DVD in America last year. Shark Tale sold nearly 10 million copies. Even the DVD release of Bambi sold 6 million copies in 2005. In comparison, all four Inuyasha movies combined have sold just over 1 million copies in the past year and a half. Evidently, the success of anime in America is very relative. American anime fans are very devoted. Through underground means hardcore American fans now have access to brand new Japanese anime before even many Japanese residents do. America's anime fan community is influential because it's affluent, intelligent, and motivated; but it's not very large.[11] Despite assessments like that, and its rare and limited release in American theaters, anime's legitimacy and respect in North America has grown well enough to garner major native artistic awards such as the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002 for Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki. Anime has a dedicated fan following in English speaking countries, particularly active on the internet, and at conventions regularly held throughout the US and UK. Commercial appeal Anime has become commercially profitable in western countries as early commercially successful western adaptations of anime, such as Astro Boy, have revealed.[12] The phenomenal success of Nintendo's multi-billion dollar Pokémon franchise[13] was helped greatly by the spin-off anime series that, first broadcast in the late 1990s, is still running worldwide to this day. Influence on Western culture Western Animation Main article: Anime-influenced animation Anime-influenced animation refers to non-Japanese works of animation that emulate the visual style of anime. Though most of these works are created by and primarily shown in the United States, many also involve production studios from Europe and non-Japanese Asia. These generally adapted anime stylizations and anime methods described in anime physics into their own. Such examples exist in Totally Spies!, The Boondocks, W.I.T.C.H. and Megas XLR. In addition, works such as Avatar: The Last Airbender features Asian themes. While these examples are not considered anime by the fanbase majority, they are best noted for being "influenced by anime".
