Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit,[2] were the sister act to The Primes (later known as The Temptations).[2] In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes. Musicians and critics today recognize him as one (More) Sam Cooke (January 22, 1931 December 11, 1964) was a popular and influential American gospel, R&B, soul, pop singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. Musicians and critics today recognize him as one of the founders of soul music, and as one of the most important singers in soul music history.[1] He has been called "the king of soul" by many, and while some may dispute this title, Sam Cooke's legacy is an extensive one and his impact on soul music is undeniable. He had 29 Top 40 hits in the U.S. between 1957 and 1965. He is therefore seen by many as "the creator" of the genre. Major hits like "You Send Me", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World" and "Bring It on Home to Me" are among some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career.[1] He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the Civil Rights Movement,[1] using his musical ability to bridge gaps between black and white audiences. Biography Sam Cook was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi. He added an "e" onto the end of his name because he thought it added a touch of class. He was one of seven children of Annie Mae and the Reverend Charles Cook, a Baptist minister. The family moved to Chicago in 1933. Cooke began his musical career as a member of a quartet with his siblings, The Singing Children, and, as a teenager, he was a member of the Highway QCs, a gospel group. In 1950, at the age of 19, he joined The Soul Stirrers and achieved significant success and fame within the gospel community. His first pop single, "Lovable" (1956), was released under the alias of "Dale Cooke" in order to not alienate his fan base; there was a considerable taboo against gospel singers performing secular music. However, the alias failed to hide Cooke's unique and distinctive vocals. No one was fooled. Art Rupe, head of Specialty Records, the label of the Soul Stirrers, gave his blessing for Cooke to record secular music under his real name, but he was unhappy about the type of music Cooke and producer Bumps Blackwell were making. Rupe expected Cooke's secular music to be similar to that of another Specialty Records artist, Little Richard. When Rupe walked in on a recording session and heard Cooke covering Gershwin, he was quite upset. After an argument between Rupe and Blackwell, Cooke and Blackwell left the label(Greene, 2006). In 1957, Cooke signed with Keen Records. His first release was "You Send Me", which spent six weeks at #1 on the Billboard R&B chart. The song also had massive mainstream success, spending three weeks at #1 on the Billboard pop chart. In addition to his success in writing his own songs and achieving mainstream fame a truly remarkable accomplishment for an R&B singer at that time Cooke continued to astonish the music business in the 1960s with the founding of his own label, SAR Records (Greene, 2006), which soon included The Simms Twins, The Valentinos, Bobby Womack, and Johnnie Taylor. Cooke then created a publishing imprint and management firm, then left Keen to sign with RCA Victor. One of his first RCA singles was the hit "Chain Gang." It reached #2 on the Billboard pop chart. This was followed by more hits, including "Sad Mood", "Bring it on Home to Me" (with Lou Rawls on backing vocals), "Another Saturday Night" and "Twistin' the Night Away". Like most R&B artists of his time, Cooke focused on singles; in all he had 29 top 40 hits on the pop charts, and more on the R&B charts. In spite of this, he released a critically acclaimed blues-inflected LP in 1963, Night Beat. He was known for having written many of the most popular songs of all time in the genre, and is often unaccredited for many of them by the general public[citation needed]. Cooke died at the age of 33 under mysterious circumstances on December 11, 1964 in Los Angeles, California. Though the details of the case are still in dispute, the official story was that he was shot to death by Bertha Franklin, manager of the Hacienda Motel in South Los Angeles, who claimed that he had threatened her, and that she killed him in self-defense. The verdict was justifiable homicide, though many believe that crucial details did not come out in court, or were buried afterward. Cooke was interred in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Glendale, California. Some posthumous releases followed, many of which became hits, including "A Change Is Gonna Come", an early protest song which is generally regarded as his greatest composition. After Cooke's death, his widow, Barbara, married Bobby Womack. Cooke's daughter, Linda, later married Bobby's brother, Cecil. Cooke was inducted as a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986(Greene, 2006). [edit] Death The details of the case involving Sam Cooke's death are still in dispute. The official police record[2] states that Cooke was shot to death by Bertha Franklin, the manager of the Hacienda Motel, where Cooke had checked in earlier that evening. Franklin claimed that Cooke had broken into the manager's office/apartment in a rage, wearing nothing but a shoe and an overcoat (and nothing beneath it) demanding to know the whereabouts of a woman who had accompanied him to the motel. Franklin said that the woman was not in the office and that she told Cooke this, but the enraged Cooke did not believe her and violently grabbed her demanding again to know the woman's whereabouts. According to Franklin, she grappled with Cooke, the two of them fell to the floor, and she then got up and ran to retrieve her gun. She said that she then fired at Cooke in self-defense because she feared for her life. According to Franklin, Cooke exclaimed, "Lady, you shot me," before finally falling, mortally wounded. According to Franklin and to the motel's owner, Evelyn Carr, they had been on the phone together at the time of the incident. Thus, Carr claimed to have overheard Cooke's intrusion and the ensuing conflict and gunshots. Carr called the police to request that they go to the motel, informing them that she believed a shooting had occurred. A coroner's inquest was convened to investigate the incident. The woman who had accompanied Cooke to the motel was identified as Elisa Boyer, who had also called the police that night shortly before Carr did. Boyer had called the police from a phone booth near the motel, telling them she had just escaped from being kidnapped. Boyer told the police that she had first met Cooke earlier that night and had spent the evening in his company. She claimed that after they left a local nightclub together, she had repeatedly requested that he take her home, but that he instead took her against her will to the Hacienda Motel. She claimed that once in one of the motel's rooms, Cooke physically forced her onto the bed and that she was certain he was going to rape her. According to Boyer, when Cooke stepped into the bathroom for a moment, she quickly grabbed her clothes and ran from the room. She claimed that in her haste, she had also scooped up most of Cooke's clothing by mistake. She said that she ran first to the manager's office and knocked on the door seeking help. However, she said that the manager took too long in responding, so, fearing Cooke would soon be coming after her, she fled the motel altogether before the manager ever opened the door. She claimed she then put her own clothing back on, stashed Cooke's clothing away and went to the phone booth from which she called police. Boyer's story is the only account of what happened between the two that night. However, her story has long been called into question. Due to inconsistencies between her version of events and details reported by other witnesses, as well as other circumstantial evidence (e.g. cash Cooke was reportedly carrying that was never recovered, and the fact that Boyer was soon after arrested for prostitution), many people feel it is more likely that Boyer went willingly to the motel with Cooke, and then slipped out of the room with Cooke's clothing in order to rob him, rather than in order to escape an attempted rape. Ultimately though, such questions were beyond the scope of the inquest, whose purpose was simply to establish the circumstances of Franklin's role in the shooting, not to determine exactly what had happened between Cooke and Boyer preceding that. Boyer's leaving the motel room with almost all of Cooke's clothing in tow, regardless of exactly why she did so, combined with the fact that tests showed Cooke was inebriated at the time, seemed to provide a plausible explanation for Cooke's bizarre behavior and state of dress, as reported by Franklin and Carr. This explanation together with the fact that Carr, from what she said she had overheard, corroborated Franklin's version of events, was enough to convince the coroner's jury to accept Franklin's explanation that it was a case of justifiable homicide. And with that verdict, authorities officially closed the case on Cooke's death.[3] However, some of Cooke's family and supporters have rejected not only Boyer's version of events, but also Franklin's and Carr's. They believe that there was a conspiracy from the start to murder Cooke, that this murder took place in some manner entirely different from the official account of Cooke's intrusion into Franklin's office/apartment, and that Franklin, Boyer and Carr were all lying to provide a cover story for this murder. None have been able to provide any evidence of this, however.[1] [2] [3] My brother was first class all the way. He would not check into a $3-a-night motel; that wasn't his style. Agnes Cooke-Hoskins, sister of Sam Cooke, attending the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 2005 tribute to Cooke. In her autobiography, Rage To Survive, singer Etta James claimed that she viewed Cooke's body in the funeral home and that the injuries she observed were well beyond what could be explained by the official account of Franklin alone having fought with Cooke. James described Cooke as having been so badly beaten that his head was nearly decapitated from his shoulders, his hands were broken and crushed and his nose was mangled. Nevertheless, no solid, reviewable evidence supporting a conspiracy theory has been presented to date. However, in Our Uncle Sam: The Sam Cooke Story From His Family's Perspective, the biography written by Cooke's great-nephew, he discusses little-known facts, glaring inconsistencies, and an alternate scenario to the singer's death. [edit] Legacy Cooke's influence has been immense: even people who have never heard one of his records have still heard his voice and phrasing if they have listened to Rod Stewart or Southside Johnny. Other rock artists with a notable Cooke heritage include The Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Van Morrison, James Taylor, the Beatles (particularly John Lennon), John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Marriott, Terry Reid, Steve Perry, and numerous others, while R&B and soul artists indebted to Cooke include Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, David Ruffin, Bobby Womack, Johnnie Taylor, Lou Rawls, Al Green, The Temptations, Philippe Wynne, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples, Ben E. King, and many more. Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" was memorably featured in Spike Lee's film, Malcolm X and was most recently redone by the group Solo. Rapper 2Pac references Sam Cooke in a line of the song "Thugz Mansion," as well as rapper Nas, who references him in the song "We Major" with Kanye West. In the Roots song "Stay Cool" the lyrics say, "I got the soul of a young Sam Cooke". Other notable artists include India.Arie, Joe Budden, the Wallflowers, and John Legend. On the West Wing (television) episode "A Change Is Gonna Come", James Taylor performs Sam Cooke's song by the same name in tribute to Cooke. Cat Stevens hadn't released a song that he didn't write until 1974 when he released his Greatest Hits album with a cover of Sam Cooke's "Another Saturday Night". He also released it as a single which reached No.4 in the US. Southern radio stations can be picked up at night in Jamaica, and Cooke's recordings were a major influence on the singing style of Bob Marley. John Landis has used many of Cooke's recording for his films such as Animal House and American Werewolf in London. Cooke was an influence on punk vocalist Mia Zapata of The Gits, who honored him with a cover of "A Change Is Gonna Come" on their album Enter: The Conquering Chicken. Shortly following his passing, Motown Records released We Remember Sam Cooke, a collection of Cooke covers recorded by The Supremes. In 1966 the now cult '60s British pop show Ready Steady Goes Live, the live version of Ready, Steady, Go devoted a whole programe to a live performance of Soul singer Otis Redding, who regularly covered many of Cooke's songs. One of the highlights was a rousing version of "Shake" on which Redding was joined by British Soul legends Eric Burdon, lead singer of The Animals, and chart topper Chris Farlowe. The programme is acclaimed by many as the best episode of the whole series. After being featured prominently in the 1985 film Witness (1985 movie) [4] (starring Harrison Ford), the song "Wonderful World" gained further exposure. "Wonderful World" was featured as one of two concurrently running a Levi's Jeans commercials in 1985 and became a hit in the United Kingdom because of this, reaching #2 in re-release. Other notable movies that featured his music Animal House ("Wonderful World" and "Twistin' The Night Away") and Cadence ("Chain Gang"). In 1999, Cooke was honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #16 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[4]. Biography [edit] Early life Hill was born Audrey Faith Perry in Ridgeland, Mississippi near Jackson, Mississippi. She was adopted as an infant, and raised by a couple in the nearby town of Star. Her adoptive parents raised their two (biological) sons and Hill in a very Christian environment.[2] Hill's vocal talent was apparent early, and she had her first public performance, a 4-H luncheon, when she was seven.[4] By the time she was a teenager, Hill was a regular performer at area churches, even those not in her own Baptist denomination.[5] At seventeen, Hill formed a band that played in local rodeos. She briefly attended college, but at 19 quit school to move to Nashville and pursue her dream of being a country singer. In her early days in Nashville, Hill auditioned to be a backup singer for Reba McEntire, but failed to secure the job.[2] After a stint selling t-shirts, Hill became a secretary at a music publishing firm.[4] Apart from her quest for entry into the music industry, Hill also began working towards a more robust family life. In 1988 she married songwriter and music executive Dan Hill, who provided the surname she would use as she became famous. Two years later she began a search for her natural mother, whom she eventually met and with whom she still corresponds.[6] A co-worker heard Hill singing to herself one day, and soon the head of her music publishing company was encouraging her to become a demo singer for the firm.[4] She supplemented this work by singing backup vocals for songwriter Gary Burr, who often performed his new songs at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe. During one of those performances, an executive from Warner Bros. Records was in the audience, and, impressed with Hill's voice, began the process of signing her to a recording contract.[2] [edit] 1993 1997: Country success Hill's debut album was Take Me as I Am (1993); sales were strong, buoyed by the chart success of "Wild One". Hill became the first female country singer in 30 years to hold Billboard's #1 position for four consecutive weeks when "Wild One" managed the feat in 1994.[7] Her version of Erma Franklin's "Piece of My Heart", also went to the top of the country charts in 1994,[4] although rock fans drew unflattering comparisons to Janis Joplin's cover.[citation needed] The album sold a total of 3 million copies.[4] Shortly after the release of her album, Hill found her marriage falling apart. Several other top 10 singles followed, and this album also sold over 3 million copies.[4] The fifth single from the album, "I Can't Do That Anymore," was written by country music artist Alan Jackson. In the spring of 1996 Hill began the Spontaneous Combustion Tour with country singer Tim McGraw. At that time Hill had recently become engaged to her former producer, Scott Hendricks, and McGraw had recently broken an engagement. McGraw and Hill were quickly attracted to each other and Hill broke her engagement so that she and McGraw could begin dating. The pair became engaged on the tour and married on October 6, 1996.[6] They have three daughters together: Gracie Katherine (b. 1997), Maggie Elizabeth (b. 1998) and Audrey Caroline (b. 2001). Since their marriage, Hill and McGraw have strived to never be apart for more than three consecutive days.[2] [edit] 1998 2004: Pop crossover After the release of It Matters to Me, Hill took a three-year break from recording to give herself a rest from four years of touring and to begin a family with McGraw. During her break, she joined forces with her husband for their first duet, "It's Your Love". [1] The song stayed at Number 1 for six weeks[4] and won awards from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. Hill has remarked that sometimes when they perform the song together, " it [doesn't] feel like anybody else was really watching."[1] She reentered the music business with 1998's Faith.[1] The album moved her closer towards a mainstream, pop-oriented sound, although it retained some country sound. "This Kiss" became a #1 country hit, and was the first of her singles to place on the pop charts, peaking at #7. The album sold over six million copies and delivered more hits including another duet with McGraw, "Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me", "Let Me Let Go" and "The Secret Of Life".[4] To follow up this new found success Hill immediately released Breathe, which debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Country and all genre charts, ahead of albums by Mariah Carey and Savage Garden.[8] Although the album had few overt country sounds, it "complement[ed] her vocal strengths."[9] For the first time, the album consisted solely of songs about love and did not venture into the more somber territory that her previous albums had touched.[9] The title track, "Breathe", reached Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[8] "The Way You Love Me" hit the top ten as well (#6), and became one of the longest running singles in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 (57 weeks).[citation needed] The album won Hill three Grammy Awards including Best Country Album, Best Country Collaboration With Vocals for Let's Make Love featuring Tim McGraw and Best Country Female Vocal Performance for Breathe.[10].[10] It also marked a step away from her girl-next-door image, as the videos and promotional pictures all portrayed a much sexier image. Breathe has sold almost 10 million copies worldwide.[11] Hill used her 1999 tour to support a national children's book drive. Fans who donated books at one of her concerts were entered into a drawing to meet her personally after the show.[12] The effort resulted in the donation of 35,000 children's books, which were distributed to hospitals, schools, libraries, and daycare centers in 40 cities across the United States.[13] 2000 was an especially busy year for Hill. Besides a successful tour with her husband, Hill was featured in a CBS television special, VH1's Behind the Music, VH1 Divas 2000, and the Lifetime cable channel's Intimate Portraits series.[8] She signed an endorsement deal with CoverGirl makeup.[4], performed at the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards, appeared on the cover of numerous magazine, and performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl.[8] Hill was also named to Mr. Blackwell's 10-best dressed women of 2000, the only singer listed among actresses and other celebrities. Hill and McGraw also embarked on their first Soul2Soul tour the "Soul2Soul Tour 2000".[14] Musically, in 2000 Hill recorded a song for the movie Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas The song also appeared on the pop and country charts. Hill's success on the pop charts disturbed some country music insiders, who questioned whether she was trying to dismiss her country roots and move into the pop genre. Despite the grumbling, Hill won the CMA Female Vocalist of The Year Award, and in her acceptance speech announced, "I love this business and I love this industry...and my heart is here."[8] In 2001, Hill recorded a song for the Pearl Harbor soundtrack. "There You'll Be" also appeared on the album There You'll Be: The Best Of Faith Hill, an international greatest hits album. The album featured some dance mixes of "Piece Of My Heart," "Let Me Let Go," "The Way You Love Me" and "Breathe." In 2002, Hill released her new album with a more pop-oriented sound, Cry. The album "spotlight[ed] her impressive set of pipes", but also marked the completion of her "transformation into a pop diva", containing few nods to her country roots. Though the album debuted at #1 on Billboard magazine's pop and country album charts,[4] and Hill made her debut as musical guest on Saturday Night Live, the album's singles (including the title track "Cry", written and originally performed by Angie Aparo) received much less radio airplay than her previous smashes.[15] The album however, did win a Grammy Award and has sold over 3 million copies worldwide.[10] Faith Hill's 2002 single "Baby You Belong" off her Cry album was used as the theme song for the movie Lilo & Stitch. Men vond daar dat de nieuwe single een uptempoliedje moest worden, een single die de verkoop van het album beter zou stimuleren. Mariah kreeg het gevoel dat het label haar niet begreep. De zangeres was natuurlijk een goudmijn, die als artieste moeilijk te doorkruisen was en dat was iets wat SONY goed wist. Carey kreeg haar zin en Can't Take That Away verscheen op single. De relatie tussen Carey en SONY verslechterde en de scheiding tussen Carey en Mottola leek hier grotendeels mee te maken te hebben. Er gingen van het album slechts 2 miljoen stuks over de toonbank, wat erg weinig is voor een artiest die altijd meer dan 5 a 10 miljoen stuks van ieder album weet te verkopen. Hierna stortte Mariah (wegens een overvolle agenda) volledig in. Ze stortte fysiek en emotioneel in. Vervolgens werd de zangeres een poosje in een rusthuis verpleegd. Concerten die ze in Japan en Australi had gepland, werden om die reden afgezegd. Rond diezelfde periode bracht SONY Music een Greatest Hits-album op de markt, waarvan een magere 3 miljoen exemplaren wereldwijd werden verkocht. Voor de speelfilm Wise Girls (waarin Carey haar tweede filmrol had) werd de promotie wegens Careys instorting stopgezet. Toch ging Carey met dit album in 2003 op wereldtournee, een tour waarmee ze diverse kleinere zalen aandeed. Er gingen geruchten dat het publiek niet warm liep voor de tickets, maar Mariah ontkende dit en verklaarde dat ze juist in kleinere zalen wilde optreden om zo een meer intieme sfeer met haar fans te krijgen. Tijdens deze tour bezocht de zangeres voor de tweede keer Nederland. In Ahoy Rotterdam gaf ze een avondvullende show. Halverwege de tour scoorde Carey een hit met het nummer I Know What You Want, wat ze opnam met rapper Busta Rhymes. In oktober verscheen er een dubbelalbum met daarop remix-versies van Carey's succesvolste singles onder de titel The Remixes. Na de tour lastte de zangeres een lange rustpauze in. ------------------------------- The Emancipation Of Mimi Medio 2005 liet de zangeres weer van zich horen met de single It's Like That, afkomstig van het nieuwe album The Emancipation Of Mimi. De single bereikte de 16e plaats van de Amerikaanse hitlijsten. Het nieuwe album kwam - een week na de release - nieuw binnen op de eerste plaats. Om op het succes verder te liften verscheen er al vrij snel een tweede single: We Belong Together. Wegens airplay op radio en televisie in de VS, bereikte Mariah (na 5 jaar) de eerste plaats van de Billboard Hot 100, haar 16e Amerikaanse nummer 1-succes. Het album werd meerdere malen met platina bekroond en was wereldwijd een groot succes. Met We Belong Together scoorde Carey haar grootste hit sinds jaren. Haar carrire zat duidelijk weer in de lift. Van The Emancipation Of Mimi verschenen in een later stadium nog de singles Shake It Off, Don't Forget About Us (Careys 17e Amerikaanse nummer 1-hit), Get Your Number en Fly Like A Bird. Het album kreeg acht nominaties voor de Grammy Awards. Ondanks dat wist Carey slechts 3 van de nominaties te verzilveren. De teller van dit album staat momenteel op 10 miljoen verkochte exemplaren wereldwijd. ------------------------------- Toekomst Mariah tijdens haar wereldtoernee Mariah heeft in 2006 een succesvolle tour afgerond, waarna ze na een korte vakantie ook de opnames van haar nieuwe film Tennessee heeft afgerond. De film is geregisseerd door Aaron Woodley, in de film speelt Mariah Krystal, een karakter die diens man ontvlucht om haar droom na te jagen. Voor de film schreef Mariah samen met Willie Nelson het nummer: Right to dream. Dit nummer is speciaal voor het karakter Krystal geschreven en is Mariah's eerste country nummer. Inmiddels heeft Mariah ook haar eigen parfumlijn in de Verenigde Staten met succes gelanceerd, welke de passende naam "M" draagt. De geur schijnt onder andere te ruiken naar Marshmallows. Halverwege het jaar dook de zangeres de studio in om aan dit project te gaan werken. Naast bekende traditionele kerstliedjes schreef de zangeres zelf 4 nieuwe composities voor dit album, waaronder All I Want for Christmas Is You. In veel landen wisten de diva's (die door de jaren heen telkens met elkaar werden vergeleken en dus volgens velen wel een hekel aan elkaar zouden hebben, hetgeen nu niet waar bleek te zijn) de top 10 te behalen. ------------------------------- Rainbow 1999 was het jaar waarin Carey haar zoveelste studioalbum lanceerde. Rainbow was weer een typische Mariah Carey-plaat la Daydream en Butterfly en had wederom de juiste ingredinten om een succes te worden. De eerste single Heartbreaker was een samenwerking tussen Carey en rapper Jay-Z en werd Mariah's 14e Amerikaanse nummrt 1-single. Hiermee werd ze de enige zangeres in de Amerikaanse muziekgeschiedenis die zoveel nr. 1-singles had weten te scoren. Het album Rainbow verscheen kort na de release van de single en was een succes, maar wist de eerste plaats in de VS niet te halen. Na Emotions werd dit haar minst verkochte album. Wereldwijd werden er van het schijfje 10 miljoen stuks verkocht. De tweede single werd Thank God I Found You, dat Carey opnam met zanger Joe en boyband 98 Degrees. Het werd haar 15e nummer 1-hit in Amerika, opnieuw een record voor de zangeres. Sinds haar debuut in 1990 was het haar gelukt om ieder jaar een nummer 1-hit te scoren in Amerika, wat haar de best verkopende artiest van de jaren 90 maakte. Wel gaf Carey een uitverkocht optreden in Belgi. ------------------------------- De breuk met SONY Music Na de wereltournee besloot Carey om het nummer Can't Take That Away als volgende single uit te brengen. Het nummer had een speciale betekenis voor haar en om die reden wilde ze het graag delen met haar fans. Bij SONY Music was men niet zo blij met haar keuze. Men vond daar dat de nieuwe single een uptempoliedje moest worden, een single die de verkoop van het album beter zou stimuleren. Mariah kreeg het gevoel dat het label haar niet begreep. De zangeres was natuurlijk een goudmijn, die als artieste moeilijk te doorkruisen was en dat was iets wat SONY goed wist. Carey kreeg haar zin en Can't Take That Away verscheen op single. De relatie tussen Carey en SONY verslechterde en de scheiding tussen Carey en Mottola leek hier grotendeels mee te maken te hebben. Carey begon berichtjes op haar website te plaatsen waarin ze haar fans verzocht om Can't Take That Away zoveel mogelijk aan te vragen op hun lokale radiostation. Dit werd gezien als de allergrootste platendeal uit de geschiedenis van de muziek. De langverwachte speelfilm Glitter en de gelijknamige soundtrack verschenen op 11 september 2001. Als eerste single werd het nummer Loverboy uitgebracht. Wegens de aanslagen in de VS op 11 september werd de presentatie van het album uitgesteld, maar achteraf gezien bleek dat het album niet de juiste capaciteiten had om een succes te worden. Zowel de film als de soundtrack flopten genadeloos. Er gingen van het album slechts 2 miljoen stuks over de toonbank, wat erg weinig is voor een artiest die altijd meer dan 5 a 10 miljoen stuks van ieder album weet te verkopen. Hierna stortte Mariah (wegens een overvolle agenda) volledig in. Ze stortte fysiek en emotioneel in. Vervolgens werd de zangeres een poosje in een rusthuis verpleegd. Concerten die ze in Japan en Australi had gepland, werden om die reden afgezegd. Rond diezelfde periode bracht SONY Music een Greatest Hits-album op de markt, waarvan een magere 3 miljoen exemplaren wereldwijd werden verkocht. Tijdens deze tour bezocht de zangeres voor de tweede keer Nederland. In Ahoy Rotterdam gaf ze een avondvullende show. Halverwege de tour scoorde Carey een hit met het nummer I Know What You Want, wat ze opnam met rapper Busta Rhymes. In oktober verscheen er een dubbelalbum met daarop remix-versies van Carey's succesvolste singles onder de titel The Remixes. "The Singing Nolans" toured the Northern club circuit for several years as a full family unit, before the five eldest girls broke away to form The Nolan Sisters in the early 1970s. The original line up of The Nolan Sisters consisted of: Anne (born 12 November 1950) Denise (born 9 April 1952) Maureen (born 14 June 1954) Linda (born 23 February 1959) Bernie (born Bernadette Therese 17 October 1960) The sisters became popular on variety programs on British television during the 1970s and released several records featuring their versions of various popular songs. These would mark their last releases under the name "The Nolan Sisters." It shot to the U.K. Top 3 and became a success all over the world, particularly in Japan (where the group would remain popular for many years). The single was taken from their Nolan Sisters album (although "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" marked their first release under which they were simply billed "The Nolans"). Shortly after this time Anne Nolan left the group to have a baby, making The Nolans a four-piece. Success continued into 1980 with the singles "Don't Make Waves" (#12) and "Gotta Pull Myself Together" (#9). These tracks were later found on the album Making Waves, released towards the end of the year. This album spent more weeks on the U.K. chart (33 in total) than any other Nolans release. The album also spawned two more Top 20 singles - "Who's Gonna Rock You" (#12, 1980), and "Attention To Me" (#9, 1981). After completing two successful tours of "The Magic Of Judy Garland" Denise Nolan joins the tour of "The Rat Pack Is Back" reprising her Judy Garland tribute as the show's special guest. The original line up on The Nolans (minus Denise) recently reunited to sing on the TV show Loose Women. They sung "I'm In The Mood For Dancing" on August 9th 2007's Episode and, although they do not plan to get back together any time soon, they revealed that they would "never say never". (Less)
