Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 -- September 6, 2007) was an Italian tenor and one of the most popular contemporary vocal performers in the world of opera and across multiple musical genres. Known for his televised concerts, media appearances, and as one of the Three Tenors, Pavarotti was also noted for his award-winning charity work for raising money on behalf of refugees and the Red Cross.
Pavarotti began his career uneventfully by performing in opera houses throughout Europe, but broke out after a performance with well-established soprano Joan Sutherland, who invited the young tenor to join her in touring internationally. By 1977, Pavarotti had become known worldwide, famed for the power and effortlessness of his upper register. His "high C" would become a trademark throughout his career.
Pavarotti was launched into popular culture after a performance of Nessun Dorma for the opening ceremony of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The first of the famed Three Tenors concerts was held on the eve of the final match of the tournament in which Pavarotti performed together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras. Through these performances, Pavarotti brought hits previously confined to the opera world to a much wider audience; Pavarotti further spread his influence with appearances in advertisements and concerts with pop stars. Unlike many crossovers, Pavarotti always maintained his reputation in the opera world as supreme in his field. (Less) Channel: youtube

His death was announced by his manager Terri Robson: "In fitting with the approach that characterised his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness." His manager confirmed this morning that he had died at his home in the northern Italian city of Modena. Pavarotti died at 5am local time on Thursday. Pavarotti was considered by some critics to have been the greatest tenor since Enrico Caruso. He had a unique ability to touch people with the emotional and brilliant quality of his voice. He was a man with the common touch and the most extraordinary gift. His most high-profile performance in Britain was the Pavarotti in the Park concert in a rain-sodden Hyde Park in 1991. His friend, Diana, Princess of Wales, was in the front row. Pavarotti was known for his powerful high C's and a showmanship that helped popularize opera. In sheer numbers of fans, Pavarotti was more popular than anyone before in classical music. Millions around the world came to recognise his signature tune Nessun Dorma, from Puccini's Turandot, which became associated with the 1990 football World Cup. The legendary opera star is regarded by many as the finest singer of his generation and is best known for his Three Tenors project with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Domingo today led the tributes to his fellow tenor. "I always admired the God-given glory of his voice - that unmistakable special timbre from the bottom up to the very top of the tenor range," he said. "I also loved his wonderful sense of humour and on several occasions of our concerts with José Carreras we had trouble remembering that we were giving a concert before a paying audience, because we had so much fun between ourselves." Pavarotti was a lifelong fan of Italian soccer giant Juventus which posted a farewell message on its website saying: "Ciao Luciano, black-and-white heart" referring to the team's famous stripes. Flags flew at half-mast on opera houses in Salzburg and Vienna. He is survived by his second wife and child, and three daughters from his first marriage. He will be truly missed.

The trio began their collaboration with a debut concert at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome held on the eve of the 1990 FIFA World Cup final in Italy, on July 7, 1990, with Zubin Mehta conducting the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and the Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. The idea of the concert was originally conceived by the Italian manager/producer Mario Dradi. The first concert was held to raise money for Carreras's foundation and also as a way for his contemporaries, Domingo and Pavarotti, to welcome their friend and colleague back to the world of opera after his successful treatment for leukemia. Lyrics
I'd like to run away from you, but if you never found me I would die
I'd like to break the chains you put around me, but I know I never will
You stay away and all I do is wonder why the hell I wait for you
But when did common sense prevail for lovers when we know it never will
Impossible to live with you, but I know, I could never live without you
For whatever you do
I never, never, never want to be in love with anyone but you
You never treat me like you should, so what's the good of loving as I do?
Although you always laugh at love, nothing else would be good enough for you
Impossible to live with you, but I know, I could never live without you
For whatever you do I never, never, never want to be in love with anyone but you
You make me laugh, you make me cry, you make me live, you make me die, for you
You make me sing, you make me sad, you make me glad, you make me mad, for you
I love you, hate you, love you, hate you
But I'll want you till the world stops turning
For whatever you do
I never, never, never want to be in love with anyone but you
I love you, hate you, love you, hate you
But I'll want you till the world stops turning
For whatever you do
I never, never, never want to be in love with anyone but you

A (More) Stevie Wonder (born Steveland Hardaway Judkins on May 13, 1950, name later changed to Steveland Hardaway Morris) is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. A prominent figure of 20th century popular music, Wonder has recorded more than thirty top ten hits, won twenty-five Grammy Awards (a record for a solo artist), plus one for lifetime achievement, won an Academy Award for Best Song and been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters halls of fame. Opera star Luciano Pavarotti once referred to him in a concert as a "great, great musical genius". A multi-instrumentalist, Wonder plays the piano, synthesizer, talk box, harmonica, congas, drums, bongos, bass guitar, organ, melodica, and clarinet. In his early career, he was best known for his harmonica work, but today he is better known for his keyboard skills.
His backup group Wonderlove (a trio) included at various times Minnie Riperton. In fact she sang she on Stevie Wonder's Fulfillingness' First Finale and toured as a member of his backing unit in the early 70s. Wonder agreed to co-produce Riperton's 1974 album Perfect Angel (also the title of his farewell song to her), which contained the international blockbuster "Lovin' You"; the record made her a household name. Diagnosed with breast cancer, she underwent a mastectomy in 1976, later becoming a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and earning a Society Courage Award from then-President Jimmy Carter. Riperton continued performing despite her declining condition, with 1979's Minnie the final record completed during her lifetime. She died in L.A. on July 12 of that year—the same year that Mr. Wonder put out his 'Perfect Angel' tribute to her.

The 71-year-old died yesterday in Italy. Pavaratti retired from the opera stage three years ago, but was on a farewell tour of concerts when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year. The 33 American Film Festival of Deauville (Doe-vil) continues this week with appearances by actors like Ben Affleck and his brother Casey. The brothers were in Deauville, France yesterday for their film, "Gone, Baby, Gone," in which Ben Affleck makes his directorial debut. Actress Jennifer Westfeldt was also at the festival with her film, "Ira and Abby." The event runs through Sunday. Model Alek Wek greeted fans at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York yesterday. She was there to sign copies of her book, titled "Alek: From Sudanese Refugee to International Supermodel." Ebony Magazine hosted the event. In 1991, Wek's family reportedly fled to Britain to escape the civil war between the Muslim North and the Christian South of the Sudan. Actress Jenna Fischer and her husband have reportedly split. The star in NBC's show The Office has been married to writer and director James Gunn for the past six years. In a statement, Fischer thanks her fans for their support and apologizes for any pain this has caused family and friends. Actor Jude Law is required to return to a London-area police station next month after being arrested yesterday. Law allegedly got into a scuffle with a photographer outside of his London home. The Alfie movie star was taken into custody when he reportedly tried to grab a photographer's camera. He was released on bail yesterday. That's all for now.
