I am familiar with his work, and I know that he never wronged a living soul. He did not injure his fellowmen, but he did much to exalt them." -Joseph F. Smith (Proceedings at the Dedication of the Joseph Smith Memorial Monument: At Sharon, Windsor, County, Vermont, December 23rd, 1905, 41) This is the fourth of five chapters of flm about the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. Within this chapter are scenes from his life begining with his own account of persecutions, the suffering of his family, the Kirtland Temple, The Missouri Period with Governor Boggs signing the infamous Extermination order against the "Mormon" relgion. And Joseph Smith's subsequent and illegal imprisonment in Liberty Jail--from whence the Prophet pleaded "O, God, where art thou?" And the Lord, answering his prayer said "My son, peace be unto thy soul, thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment and then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high, thou shalt triumph over all thy foes." The film then leads from Joseph Smith Jr. and fellow prisoners escape from prison into Commerce, where the city of Nauvoo would be born under the direction and inspiration of the Lord through his latter-day Prophet. We revere him as the prophet of this dispensation. Like, Moses, Noah and Abraham of old. We believe that Joseph Smith Jr. was called as a latter-day prophet to restore the Church of Jesus Christ, in its fullness, again to the earth. Truly, he was a Prophet and I add my testimony to the millions who have humbled themselves and confirmed from God the truth of the Restoration. Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God, an instrument in the hands of our Great Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to lay the foundation of this work and to help bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man through his teachings, revelations, the Book of Mormon and the Priesthood restored for our benefit in our time. That day those assembled received "glorious manifestations of the powers of the Priesthood. Many were "brought to repentance, were immersed in the water and were filled with the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands." Thus began the "marvelous work" of the latter days to bring souls to a knowledge and testimony of the Savior. As the Saints matured in gospel understanding, the Prophet Joseph advised, "Let every man, woman and child realize the importance of the work, and act as if success depended on his individual exertion alone."4 The Prophet Joseph called for each member to exert "fresh zeal and energy in the cause of truth"5 and to push forward "the interests of the Church and Kingdom of God." "For, behold," the Lord revealed, "I will bless all those who labor in my vineyard with a mighty blessing." Joseph Smith saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, not once, but innumerable times throughout his life. He translated the Book of Mormon, organized the true Church of Jesus Christ upon the earth once more and restored the plain and precious truths which were lost due to the apostasy of men. He lived great and he died great in the eyes of God! Hail to the Prophet. Of Joseph Smith, the Lord Himself said: "The ends of the earth shall inquire after thy name, and fools shall have thee in derision, and hell shall rage against thee; while the pure in heart, and the wise, and the noble, and the virtuous, shall seek counsel, and authority, and blessings constantly from under thy hand." (Doctrine & Covenants 122:1-2) On Sunday evening, April 26th, 1834 at a priesthood meeting in Kirtland, Ohio, the Prophet Joseph Smith invited those present to bear testimony of the importance of the latter day work. Several men responded. "Brethren, I have been very much edified and instructed in your testimonies here tonight," said the Prophet, "but I want to say to you before the Lord that you know no more concerning the destinies of this church and kingdom than a babe upon its mothers lap. You don't comprehend it. It is only a little handful of the Priesthood you see here tonight, but this church will fill North and South America--It will fill the world." Since that 1834 meeting in Kirtland, a series of events evidences the veracity of this prophetic utterance. In 1901 five out of every six Latter-day Saints lived in the western United States and the church had a membership of 250,000. Today, the membership grows at a rate of a million members ever three and a half years. Approximately 375 buildings are constructed annually to provide meetinghouses for the mushrooming membership. Faithful members enjoy the blessings of temple worship in over 120 temples throughout the earth. There is not a city in the United States or Canada of any consequence which does not have a Latter-day Saint congregation. It is the same in Mexico, Central, and South America as well as New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Africa, and may of the islands of the sea. An estimated 85 million copies of the Book of Mormon are in circulation, and that is just the beginning. Do you wonder if Joseph Smith was a Prophet of God? Look around you and see prophesy being fulfilled. Faithful Latter-day Saints have looked and now invite family, friends, and near neighbors to embrace the joy of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
