Mai 2008 mit 89 ausgewerteten Kritiken mit 28 Prozent eingestuft (9 Prozent von 11 Topkritikern). Bei Metacritic steht er am selben Tag mit 29 ausgewerteten Kritiken bei 43 Prozent. Die Zuschauer in der IMDb bewerten Jugend ohne Jugend am 10. Mai 2008 mit 6,5 von 10 Punkten mit 1785 abgegebenen Stimmen. Emanuel Levy schrieb auf www.emanuellevy.com, der Film sei „herausfordernd", „komplex", „provozierend" und „nicht kommerziell". Er weise eine nichtlineare Erzählweise und ein Fehlen herkömmlicher Charaktere auf. Seine komplexe Struktur könne einige Zuschauer verwirren.[3] Verena Lueken stellte am 22. Oktober 2007 in der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung heraus, dass dies genau der Film sei, den Coppola drehen wollte: „Niemand hat ihm reingeredet, niemand reingepfuscht."
