Today I'd like to show (More) http://www.cheapjoes.com -- Cheap Joe Miller demonstrates the use of the Fritch Scrubber and artist tape. Transcription: Welcome to Cheap Joe's Test Studio. Today I'd like to show you how I use the Artist Tape and the Fritch Scrubber combined to clean up some dirty areas of watercolor--areas that are dull and need a little lift, a little light brought into them. First I'm gonna show you the Artist Tape because it's such a handy product. I'm gonna take a little piece and I'm actually gonna put it on my apron right there, and I'm gonna take another little piece and put it on the apron. Now I'm not doing that just for the fun of it because you don't want to go directly from the roll of tape to your painting, you actually do want to put it on your jeans or your shirt or somewhere, and that helps to remove some of the tack from the tape so that it won't tear when you pull it up from the painting. I'm gonna put that one right there, this one right here, and I'm gonna take this one and put it right over here on that. Then we'll take the Fritch Scrubber--and this is a size 16 regular oval--wet it really well, I have a couple of tissues in my hand, and I'm gonna wet the area I want to lift. Do the same thing right in here, and right over here do the same thing exactly. What that does is activate that paint in there, and then I come in here and absolutely just scrub. Just what it says, a Fritch Scrubber, and I will blot it. See how I'm blotting that right there? I come back in here and do the same thing. I'm applying a lot of pressure down on it now, and hopefully it's gonna lighten a lot of this area that otherwise got dull on me, and I simply blot that out just like that. I don't know if it'll work or not, but we're sure gonna try it aren't we? Gonna lift some of this right in here where it got dull and put a little light direction. Now very carefully, we'll remove the tape--look at that!-- It did, it lifted it. We've got some life back in there now from that. Now we can take the Fritch Scrubber and just dampen part of this pathway leading into that and just kinda be ruthless and scrub it right out. Sometimes you end up with some really neat unexpected things happening when you do this. Look at that--wow! Now if I come back into it and touch it up just a little bit with some darker color, and I'm not gonna worry about what color I'm using, just gonna clean up these edges just a little bit. Maybe in the same way, put a little darker eave right in there, and perhaps the windows in it. I might come back with a painting that we could salvage, and end up with something pretty neat in there. It's kinda fun to play with it anyhow because it was no good to begin with so if I can salvage something out of it now, I can, and if I can't, I've had fun playing with it and trying. That's the Fritch Scrubber and the Artist Tape--both very handy to have. (Less)

Let me show you an old method--stretching paper--that also prevents hard edges. I've done the drawing on the paper--always do the drawing on dry paper, never on wet paper or you'll really mess it up if you do. I'm going to turn it over on the back and I take my bucket of water and I absolutely just start sopping it to the painting. You can't get it too wet. Then I'm going to flip it over on the front and I'm going to soak it. REmember, you absolutely cannot get it too wet. We have to get it all the way through the paper. This particular paper is 140 lb. cold pressed Kilimanjaro. I like it a lot. Just let that settle for about 10 or 15 minutes and buckles should appear in it. We'll come back ad show you ho to get the buckles out and how to finish stretching it. The paper is buckled just a little bit, but really not enough. Now what we need to do is since it's damp, but not wet through and through. Turn it over on the back, and wet it again just sock it to it. Just like we did the first time and be sure you get it wet everywhere. I've waited about 15 minutes from the first time I wet it, and it generally takes 20-30 minutes for it to soak all the way through. By the way, this is a piece of Gator board right here, and I like using it because you can use staples on it, you can tape on it, and it's tough as can be. Now I have it really soaking wet, now then if any buckles or bubbles appear, you simply lift the edge of the paper, and wet the board underneath while you put the paper back down like that. It's kind of like wallpapering, and that should get all the buckles out of it. Now then, we'll let that set for maybe another 10 minutes and if no buckles appear we'll be ready to do the next step. We've given the paper another 10 minutes and no buckles appeared, but if they did, remember to just lift the edge of the paper, paint the gatorboard with water behind, and let the paper down easy. The next step, and this is really important, is to take the excess water off the paper now. We do that with a roll of paper towels. I generally buy these viva towels, because they don't have a pattern in them and I think they work better. I lay two rolls over it, and I'll use these towels again--I don't throw them away--and I'll come back in with a third layer like this. Take your hands holding them flat like that and applying some pressure, go from side to side on this paper. Lift that top sheet and bringing it down, again from side to side. This gets rid of all the excess water. I' m going to take it all off and hang these towels to dry. There the paper is, stretched and ready to paint. I want to show you just one brush stroke, because I know what you're saying the paper's too wet and the paint is going to go everywhere. But it isn't. Look here, the paint will stay right there because I took the excess water off of the paper. I don't have to rush to paint now because I've already got plenty of time to work on this before it gets too dry and start leaving hard edges. I can work for a long time and I can't do that on dry paper because on dry paper I would already have some hard edges in there which I just don't want to get. It's a fun and easy way to paint and it really helps me on my journey. That's how you stretch watercolor paper. (Less)

The little Rigger brush is one of the most fun brushes, and one of the least expensive brushes you can buy, and it's just so much fun. I'm going to show you some tricks that may help you with the Rigger. I love using it and I think you will, too. Earlier, I did a segment on stretching watercolor paper and in my absent-mindedness, I forgot to show you how I attach the paper to the gator board. I go all the way around it and just take the staple gun and staple every 6 inches all the way around. Now I would like to show you the Rigger. This is a Cheap Joe's Happy Strokes Rigger size 2, which is just about a perfect size for all-around use, although I like a 1 occasionally, or a 4 or 5. This Rigger has a little black tip on it right here, and that little tip is telling you something. What it's telling you is "that's where you should hold me" because if you hold it here it will keep you loose. If you hold it down here, you'll be uptight and you dont' want to be uptight with a rigger. I've activated some dark color just so it would show up really good, and I'm just going to come in here with some trees, as you can see I'm kind of jerking it along because that motion seems to make for nicer limbs and things. We've got this fence we scraped and we'll add a little bit of darker stuff on the back side of each of those so it gives me some light in there. The rigger is just perfect for adding some of this little detail. I'm going to pick up some lighter color here and paint in this Evergreen here. Just very loose and very quick, and it gives us a really nice little effect of it being back in the woods there. It's a fun brush and I get carried away with it sometimes because it is so much fun. That's how I use The Rigger. We can come down here where we scraped in the foreground and put in some of this quicker stuff. The quicker I do it the more natural it looks. Now would be a good time to take our Gem Finder Mats, and see what our painting looks like with all of our details. We can take the little Rigger right now and put in a few little clapboards on the house for detail to enhance it just a little bit. There we have the beginnings of a painting, certainly, and a lot of fun doing it. That's what's important--we have fun doing it! (Less)
