I felt that only the ability to estimate the distance between objects, using both eyes, as in reality, can give the satisfaction of a realistic experience. For this reason I have long since begun to experiment on 3D photography and eventually constructed a system of two connected cameras, functioning simultaneously and rendering the images as seen by our left and right eye respectively. The combination of the two photos taken by these cameras, gives a result similar to our brain¢s process. When, in the summer of 2004, I saw the transformation that took place all around me in Athens, for the reception of the Olympic Games, my spontaneous reaction was to depict everything in “relief” through 3-D technique. The games begun and for 15 days we lived a unique experience, that lifted us from the tedium of everyday life. Greece won the bet and organized truly unforgettable Olympic Games, dream games, obliging the former critics to apologize. During the games, equiped with my cameras, I tried to be everywhere and record, not so much the athletic events, but the sites and the atmosphere around them. I tried to convey the unique moments we lived in the Stadiums, summer evenings in the streets of Athens, Acropolis and Thision and various “happenings” around town and the image of the city through the new constructions that changed its face. With this book I tried to record for you, this unforgettable experience of the Athens 2004 summer. Η δυνατότητα να μπορώ να εκτιμώ τις αποστάσεις των αντικειμένων, χρησιμοποιώντας και τα δύο μάτια, όπως στη πραγματικότητα, μου προσέφερε την ολοκλήρωση στην εικόνα, και τη βαθιά ικανοποίηση της ρεαλιστικής εμπειρίας. Πάντοτε πίστευα ότι η απεικόνιση σε δύο διαστάσεις, όπως συνήθως γίνεται, και η προσπάθεια να εκτιμηθεί το βάθος της εικόνας με τη βοήθεια μόνο της προοπτικής, ήταν ελλιπής και πάντοτε είχα την εντύπωση ότι κάτι χάνω, πολύ ουσιώδες, από την πραγματικότητα. Γι’ αυτό και έχω απασχοληθεί και πειραματισθεί για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα με τη τρισδιάστατη φωτογραφία, και έχω κατασκευάσει ένα σύστημα δύο μηχανών λήψεως σε ενιαία βάση, που λειτουργούν ταυτόχρονα και δίνουν την εικόνα που λαμβάνει το αριστερό και το δεξί μάτι του παρατηρητή αντίστοιχα. Έτσι ο συνδυασμός των δύο φωτογραφιών αυτών δίνει αποτέλεσμα όμοιο με αυτό που προκύπτει στον εγκέφαλό μας από τη σύνθεση των εικόνων των δύο ματιών μας. Όταν λοιπόν βρέθηκα μπροστά στην κοσμογονία που συντελέστηκε στην Αθήνα με την ευκαιρία των Ολυμπιακών αγώνων, η αυθόρμητη αντίδρασή μου, ήταν να αποτυπώσω «ανάγλυφα» τα δρώμενα που συνέβαιναν γύρω μου, μεταφορικά, αλλά και ουσιαστικά, μέσα από την τρισδιάστατη φωτογραφία. Από μιά μικρή δε έρευνα που έκανα, διαπίστωσα ότι σε όλη την ιστορία των επίσημων θερινών Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων, αυτό έχει ξαναγίνει μόνο άλλες δύο φορές, στους Ολυμπιακούς του Βερολίνου το 1936 και στους Ολυμπιακούς του Σίδνεϊ το 2000. Οι Ολυμπιακοί του 2004, σε αντίθεση με τους Ολυμπιακούς του 1896 που έγιναν στην Αθήνα τιμής ένεκεν, δόθηκαν στην Ελλάδα του σήμερα, μετά από μακρά και επίπονη διαδικασία, και ήταν μία πρόκληση στην οποία έπρεπε να απαντήσει συσπειρώνοντας όλο της το δυναμικό. Και παρά τις αντίθετες προβλέψεις, πολλές φορές κακόβουλες, αλλά και την έμφυτη απαισιοδοξία μας, η υπέρβαση έγινε, έστω και στο παρά πέντε. Η Αθήνα σαν σύγχρονη Σταχτοπούτα μεταμορφώθηκε σε μία νύχτα σε πριγκίπισσα. Πρώτα ήρθαν τα έργα. Λεωφόροι, γέφυρες, κόμβοι, ξεφύτρωσαν ξαφνικά παντού. Ύστερα ήρθε το μετρό, ο προαστιακός, το τράμ. Πλατείες, πάρκα, αρχαιολογικοί χώροι, μεταμορφώθηκαν. Και τέλος, ήρθαν οι αθλητικές εγκαταστάσεις, τα Ολυμπιακά πάρκα, τα στάδια και όλα τα σχετικά. Οι αγώνες ξεκίνησαν και για 15 μέρες ζήσαμε ένα όνειρο, μία ατμόσφαιρα μοναδική, ένα πανηγύρι που μας έβγαλε όλους, εθελοντές και μη, από την απάθεια της καθημερινότητας. Η Ελλάδα κέρδισε το «στοίχημα», οργάνωσε τους ονειρεμένους αγώνες και οι μέχρι πριν επικριτές ζήτησαν συγγνώμη. Και εγώ με τις μηχανές μου στο χέρι προσπάθησα να βρεθώ παντού όπου συντελούταν το «γίγνεσθαι» αυτής της γιορτής. Δεν επικεντρώθηκα αποκλειστικά στους αγώνες, γιατί αυτοί είναι κάτι το επαναλαμβανόμενο και σε τελευταία ανάλυση εφήμερο, αλλά στους χώρους και την ατμόσφαιρα. Προσπάθησα να μεταφέρω αξέχαστες στιγμές που ζήσαμε στις κερκίδες, ανεπανάληπτες στιγμές στους χώρους του ΟΑΚΑ, Αυγουστιάτικα βράδια στο Σύνταγμα και το Μοναστηράκι, και «χάπενινγκς», όπου τα έβρισκα. Προσπάθησα να αποτυπώσω όλους τους αθλητικούς χώρους, και κυρίως αρχιτεκτονικά έργα μοναδικά. Τα δημιουργήματα του Καλατράβα στο ΟΑΚΑ και σ’ όλη την Αθήνα καθώς και άλλων επιφανών αρχιτεκτόνων που εργάστηκαν για να μεταμορφωθεί η πόλη μας και βέβαια πάνω απ’ όλα το κορυφαίο έργο της Ολυμπιακής περιόδου, τη γέφυρα του Ρίου-Αντιρίου που στο μυαλό μου συμβολίζει με τρόπο μοναδικό αυτό το γιγάντιο κατόρθωμα. Τελικά, το βιβλίο αυτό θέλει να προσφέρει στον αναγνώστη κάτι από τη μαγεία που γεμίζει τη ψυχή μας κάθε μεγάλο γεγονός, όταν το ζούμε έντονα και μας φέρνει νοσταλγία, μετά από χρόνια, όταν το αναπολούμε ! Και θα προσπαθήσει να το πετύχει αυτό με την αμεσότητα της τρισδιάστατης φωτογραφίας και τη συγκίνηση του θεατή που έζησε προσωπικά ο ίδιος την ατμόσφαιρα των Ολυμπιακών, που περιδιάβασε και θαύμασε τους χώρους και τα έργα, όταν συνέβαιναν τα γεγονότα, και έζησε επάνω από τις κερκίδες τον παλμό, την ένταση και τον ενθουσιασμό του κοινού. Προσωπικές αναμνήσεις, αλλά λίγο πολύ κοινές για όλους μας, που έχουν μια μοναδικότητα η οποία δεν είναι δυνατόν να μεταδοθεί από την ψυχρή και τυποποιημένη λεπτομερή καταγραφή των αγώνων από την τηλεόραση, που παρακολουθήσαμε όλοι μας εκείνες τις ημέρες. Εξάλλου, οι φωτογραφίες που θα δείτε, κάθε μιά τους, έχει και κάποια ιστορία να πει. Έτσι λοιπόν, ελπίζω να σας κάνω να ξαναγυρίσετε σε εκείνες τις αξέχαστες στιγμές που ζήσαμε όλοι μας το καλοκαίρι του 2004, στιγμές μοναδικές για μιά ολόκληρη ζωή !
