"I've learned not to sweat the small stuff," Benvie said as he prepared to get his degree Sunday. "I had friends pulling their hair out when they had two papers due. My experiences put many things in life into perspective." Benvie, 23, was among 566 graduates who took part in the college's 57th commencement on Sunday on the campus green. The Army Reserve member was assigned to the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq not long after the prisoner-abuse scandal. "I worked there as a prison guard, but I make sure I tell people I was there after all that stuff happened," said Benvie, who hopes to join the Brockton police force. He said he had "tons of appreciation" for his college experience once he returned, and he was grateful for the generosity that the college -- particularly the football team -- showed. "The team welcomed me back when I returned to the team; it was like I never left. And they sent me a couple of care packages," Benvie said. Another graduate, Justin Shepard of Abington, was honored for his academic achievements. He was named to the dean's list after every semester, and he studied in Australia, Ireland and Belgium. Shepard said studying abroad helped him understand business and the world economy. "I'd like to focus on the international part of business, and it (the travel) helped me see different things," he said. In October, Shepard will begin working for Grant Thornton LLP in Boston. He is studying to take the certified public account exam this summer. In June, he will begin graduate work at Babson College. "People would be surprised I don't hit the books so hard all the time," Shepard said. "I try to enjoy things without working so much." Danielle Mason of Salisbury, the student commencement speaker, encouraged her classmates to find passion in what they do, embrace change, keep learning and experience life. "Life still has so much to offer us if we take chances," Mason said. "Don't miss out for fear or apathy." (Less)

In a few days, she will walk across the wooden stage at Stonehill College graduation, along with nearly 600 other seniors. It will mark a milestone for the 22-year-old Carver woman, who defied death by embracing life. "She is our miracle, she is our Megabucks, she is our everything," her mother, Katie Briggs, said. Briggs, who has cystic fibrosis, an inherited chronic disease which causes the body to produce a thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, was near death in February when she underwent a double-lung transplant at the University of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Hospital in Pennsylvania. She had been on a waiting list in Massachusetts — then Pennsylvania — for about a year when a donor was finally found. Within days of the transplant, Briggs was off the ventilator and sitting up in a chair. Within weeks, she was out of the hospital. Last month, she came home to Carver. She was determined to be home for her younger sister's graduation from Carver High School and the Stonehill ceremonies this Sunday. "Graduation was a big push to help her recover," her mother said. Briggs — who is still several credits shy of officially graduating — said she is thrilled to be part of the graduation ceremony with her class. "It is going to be an emotional day," said Briggs, who is a former Enterprise intern. Briggs' journey to the graduation stage — and a new life — was not easy. Briggs, diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth, juggled classes with doctor's appointments and hospitalizations, hitting the books in her hospital rooms whenever she could. She was on the waiting list in Massachusetts for new lungs for nearly a year before a doctor suggested she go to the Pittsburgh hospital for help. There, she met with specialists in January and was to begin a program to put more weight onto her slender, 6-foot frame to prepare for surgery. But, within three days, she contracted a pneumonia strain that overpowered her. "She had gotten sick in a way we had never seen before," her mother said. Briggs' condition quickly deteriorated. She was hospitalized, drifting in and out of consciousness. Her name rose — quickly — to the top of the transplant list as her condition fell. Doctors struggled to keep her stabilized until a lung donor could be found. Her family gathered at the hospital, fearing the worse and praying for the best. Then, with Briggs near death, a surgeon came in to the intensive care unit where her parents, Katie and Donald, waited. There were some papers to sign, they were told. A potential donor had been found. Within hours, Briggs was being prepared for surgery. Within a day, she had new lungs. Her first words to her family: "I can breathe." Her recovery, her mother said, has been remarkable. Her body has shown no signs of rejecting the lungs. Doctors allowed her to return home sooner than anyone expected She is slowly putting on weight — from the under 100 pounds she weighed before the surgery to the 118 she now weighs. She is spending time with friends, does a little bit of shopping, goes out to eat. "As long as I stick with what I'm supposed to do, I'll be OK," Briggs said. (Less)
