After a German embassy official was assassinated in Paris by a Jew in revenge for the mass expulsion of Jews to Poland, attacks on the Jews soon followed. Though it was portrayed as a spontaneous outburst of popular outrage, these pogroms were organized and coordinated by Hitler's Nazis, who beat and murdered Jews throughout Germany and Austria. Synagogues and Jewish businesses were particular targets of attacks. The police and fire brigade looked on. Tens of thousands were rounded up and sent to concentration camps. This marked the beginning of the Holocaust, the mass killing of Europe's Jews.
