Between Laughter and Tears
Comedy is one of the most popular film genres. 2007 saw a lot of humorous films produced in Germany, but not all were audience favourites. Dani Levy, for instance, was unable to fulfil the expectations for his Nazi parody «Mein Führer -- the Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler». More successful was the literary adaptation «Runaway Horse», which presented writer Martin Walser's eponymous novella as a light summer comedy. And Germany's most successful film comedian Michael «Bully» Herbig drew in 2.2 million moviegoers with his animated parody of royal historical films, «Lissi und der wilde Kaiser». KINO looks at three very different approaches to film comedy.
To Live and Die in LA
A few young German directors were able to realise their dreams of working in Hollywood this year, with varying degrees of success. Oliver Hirschbiegel filmed «The Invasion» starring Nicole Kidman, but the studio was unhappy with the original cut, and the film has been changed. But Menan Yapo's mystery-thriller «Premonition» gave its star Sandra Bullock her biggest US box-office hit to date. And with support from Roland Emmerich, Marco Kreuzpaintner made the acclaimed film «Trade». KINO looks at three young directors and their experiences working in the US.
Tinseltown on the Spree
At the start of the year, the German film industry got considerable financial support from the Federal Ministry for Culture: 60 million euros aimed at boosting film production. That money lured big international productions such as «Valkyrie», starring Tom Cruise, and «Speed Racer» to Berlin-Babelsberg. But German productions such as Tom Tykwer's «The International» and Leander Haussmann's «Warum Männer nicht zuhören und Frauen schlecht einparken» also profited. KINO looks at what the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) did for film in 2007.
Three Big Winners
Box office success is one thing. But major international festivals and prizes are also important for a film's reputation and for gaining attention from abroad. And 2007 was a good year for German film seen from that perspective as well. KINO presents Oscar winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the underground film «Four Minutes», which won the German Film Prize, and Fatih Akin, who was honoured both at the Cannes Film Festival and at the European Film Awards for the screenplay to his latest film.

Die beruflich erfolgreiche Jane Nichols fungierte bereits auf 27 Hochzeiten als Brautjungfer und half auch bei der Organisation. Sie ist heimlich in ihren Vorgesetzten George verliebt.
Janes jüngere Schwester Tess geht eine Beziehung mit George ein und will ihn heiraten. Jane soll bei der Organisation einer weiteren Hochzeit helfen. Sie lernt den Journalisten Kevin kennen, der widerwillig von Hochzeiten berichtet und verliebt sich in ihn.
Bei der Verlobungsfeier von Tess und George rastet Jane aus und bezeichnet Tess als heuchlerisch. George sagt daraufhin die Hochzeit ab, aber Jane stellt fest, dass sie George nicht wirklich liebt. Sie versöhnt sich wenig später mit Tess und gesteht sich ein, dass sie Kevin liebt.
Ein Jahr später heiraten Jane und Kevin − auf ihrer Hochzeit versöhnen sich George und Tess.

Lucy Alexis Liu (Chinese: 劉玉玲 Liú Yùlíng, born December 2, 1968 in Queens, New York) is an Emmy Award-nominated American actress. She became known after starring in the television series Ally McBeal (1998-2002) and has also appeared in several notable film roles, including Kill Bill and Charlie's Angels.
Liu began acting in 1989, after auditioning for a role in the University of Michigan's production of Alice in Wonderland during her senior year. Liu was cast in the lead role, although she had originally only tried out for a supporting part.[1] Liu had small roles in films and TV (including the Hell Money episode of The X-Files) before landing a role on Ally McBeal. Liu originally auditioned for the role of 'Nelle Porter' (played by Portia de Rossi), and the character "Ling Woo" was later created specifically for her. Liu's part on the series was originally not meant to be regular but the enthusiastic audience response to the actress' 'feisty' Ling Woo secured Liu as a permanent cast member. It also earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Liu cemented her reputation playing bad girls by portraying "Pearl" the sadistic dominatirix/hit woman for the Chinese mafia in the film Payback (1999).
Liu became better known with her turn as Alex Munday in the Charlie's Angels movie, alongside established Hollywood stars Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. The film became a hit, earning more than $125 million in the U.S., and a worldwide total of more than $258 million. The sequel, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, opened to poor reviews but was a box-office hit again, earning more than $252 million. In between the two films, Liu starred with Antonio Banderas in Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a critical and box-office failure.
Liu next played O-Ren Ishii (Cottonmouth), one of the major villains in Quentin Tarantino's 2003 film, Kill Bill. She won an MTV Movie Award for "Best Movie Villain" for the part. Subsequently, Liu appeared on several episodes of Joey with Matt LeBlanc, who played her love interest in the Charlie's Angels movies. She also had smaller roles as Kitty Baxter in the smash hit Chicago, and as a psychologist opposite Keira Knightley in the thriller Domino. In 2006, she played leading lady and love interest to Josh Hartnett in the popular crime thriller Lucky Number Slevin. Other appearances include a cameo on the animated show Futurama and recently, The Simpsons.
Liu caused a stir when she posed for photos in the April, 2007 German edition of O magazine.
In April 2006, the documentary Freedom's Fury premiered, with Liu as executive producer. The film dramatizes the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, climaxing with the infamous water polo showdown between Hungary and the Soviet Union at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, known as the 'Blood In The Water match'.
Her film 3 Needles was released on December 1, 2006. In the film, she plays Jin Ping, an HIV-positive Chinese woman. Liu agreed to star in the film for lower than usual pay because she wanted to spread awareness about the way AIDS is improperly treated in China and Thailand. Liu's other recent roles include Code Name: The Cleaner, an action comedy released January 5, 2007 and, Rise, a supernatural thriller co-starring Michael Chiklis in which Liu plays an undead reporter, Watching the Detectives, an independent romantic comedy co-starring Cillian Murphy, and Kung Fu Panda, an animated film scheduled for 2008 in which she will voice a snake. Liu has also signed on to star in Beautiful Asian Brides and a new version of Charlie Chan which has been in pre-production since 2000; she will produce both films.
Liu has guest starred as lawyer Grace Chin on Ugly Betty episode 16 Derailed and episode 17 Icing On The Cake.
She is due to star in the upcoming Sex and the City inspired TV show, Cashmere Mafia on ABC. (Less)

In 2000, a greatest-hits album was released that included three new songs ("In Demand", "Inner Smile," and "Guitar Song"). The video for "In Demand" featured actor Alan Rickman, and in the video for the anthemic follow-up single, co-written by Gregg Alexander, Spiteri dressed up as Elvis Presley. "Inner Smile" was a big hit in Europe and was later featured prominently in the 2002 feature film Bend It Like Beckham. The song "Like Lovers (Holding On)" is featured during the ending credits of the animated feature film Titan A.E. In September 2002, Spiteri gave birth to her daughter Mysty Kyd. However, this did not prevent her from working on another album. Careful What You Wish For was released in late 2003 and was promoted by the lead single "Carnival Girl." This was a very different style from previous singles and featured the rapper Kardinal Offishall. Unfortunately, many disliked this perceived change in direction, and although the album was more traditional pop, it sold far less than the previous three releases. A ballad, "I'll See It Through," was released at Christmas time, but by then the project was dead and buried. In the television show The Office, fictional character David Brent claims that Texas used to open for his band, "Foregone Conclusion," before he gave up music to manage the Slough office of Wernham Hogg, a paper supply firm. The band returned in mid-2005 with the single "Getaway," which entered the UK Top 10, the video for which was shot by Christopher Doyle and directed by Tim Royes. The single "Can't Resist" and album Red Book followed in the autumn. On Red Book the band collaborated with The Blue Nile singer Paul Buchanan on a track called "Sleep," which entered the UK charts at #6 in January 2006. British comedian Peter Kay scripted the music video to this song, which mainly consisted of spoofs of famous love scenes. The BBC One charity show Children in Need showed a preview on November 18, 2005, featuring a spoof on Lionel Richie's "Hello", Ghost, and An Officer and a Gentleman. Surprisingly, "Sleep" outsold the lead single. The potential fourth single "What About Us" was released as a promo-only issue, perhaps indicating a terminal loss in popularity. In 2005 Sharleen Spiteri was featured in the song "Stirb nicht vor mir // Don't die before I do", by the German band Rammstein's Rosenrot album. On September 24, 2007 the band released The BBC Sessions, including radio sessions spanning from 1989 to 2005, with extensive liner notes and interviews with Sharleen Spiteri. The move has alarmed data-privacy activists. In a move to boost national security and make key identity documents harder to forge, Germany will require fingerprints on all passports issued as of Nov. 1, 2007. The electronic fingerprints, as well as the biometric digital photograph already required, will be stored on an invisible, electronically scannable data chip on the inside flap of the document. The new technology aims to make the passport more secure. By using biometric data, border guards can see whether passport and carrier actually belong together. Testing was positive, authorities say "Security has taken a quantum leap," Matthias Merx of the Government Printing Office in Berlin told the AP news service. The printing office is issuing the new passports. Authorities say test runs with the new passports, whereby the passport-holder's two index fingers are electronically scanned, have gone smoothly so far. They aren't expecting a great outcry from opponents on the issue, Martin Schallbruch, IT director in the German Interior Ministry, told reporters. "The fingerprinting (in the test phase) went off without a hitch," Schallbruch said. "The citizens were very relaxed about it." Germany is the first EU country to add the fingerprints to its passport -- part of a plan put forth by the previous German government in response to growing terrorism concerns. The plan was eventually passed as an EU guideline. Opponents label move "security risk" But data protection activists have raised the alarm, saying the change is an infringement on personal liberties and a poor security measure to boot. The Chaos Computer Club, a nonprofit group aimed at bringing attention to problem spots in modern electronic security, has labeled the new passport a "security risk." The group worries the data could be read secretly, using long-distance scanners. It recommends carrying an electronic-chip passport in a protective envelope. But passport expert Schallbruch said long-distance data reading is highly unlikely, considering the complex security mechanisms built in. Data can only be read with certain equipment, and then only from a distance of 10 centimeters. Uncertainty about data files Opponents of the new documents also were alarmed that the fingerprints are to be kept on file at local identification registry offices until the passports are issued and mailed out -- a process that can take up to six weeks. Meanwhile, even Schallbruch acknowledged it is "technically possible" for the police to access those files during the waiting period. But the fact that the prints are not centrally registered means access to them is difficult, and most likely illegal, he said in a conversation with Berlin's taz newspaper. Still, there are still exceptions. For instance, in a criminal case, the court can seize the registry office fingerprint records of a suspect. "Fingerprints are easy to counterfeit" Furthermore, data-protection activists also question whether passport offices will actually erase the personal data on file in a timely manner. Other activists call into question the logic behind the plan overall. According to authorities, the fingerprints are supposed to make it harder for criminals to forge passports. But Thilo Weichert, who is in charge of data-protection for the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein, said the chances of passport forgery in Germany were quite small in the first place (Less)

GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY 1929 is a lost Warner Bros. comedy/musical film which is historically important as the second talkie, photographed entirely in Technicolor. It became a box office sensation, making Winnie Lightner a worldwide star and boosting guitarist crooner Nick Lucas to further fame as he sang two songs that became 20th century standards; 'Tiptoe Through the Tulips' and 'Painting the Clouds with Sunshine' (Al Dubin / Joe Burke).
It earned a domestic gross of $3.5 Million, extending to over $5 Million worldwide (adjusted for inflation in 2007 this would be a gross of around $60 Million). The original production cost was approximately $500,000. This film was so popular that it quickly became the top grossing film of all time in 1929 and held this record until 1939. It was chosen as one of the ten best films of 1929 by Film Daily. As with many early Technicolor films, no complete print survives, although the last twenty minutes do, but are missing a bridging sequence and the last minute of the film. Contemporary reviews, the soundtrack and the surviving footage suggest that the film was a fast-moving comedy which was enhanced by Technicolor and a set of lively and popular songs. It encapsulates the spirit of the flapper era, giving us a glimpse of a world about to be changed by the Great Depression.
Because the film is lost, the partial remake, Gold Diggers of 1933, is the most frequently seen version of the story. The film has become so completely forgotten that it is seldom featured in any 'most wanted' lost film lists and is missing from many modern reviews of the early talkie.
The song "Painnting The Clouds With Sunshine" was extremely popular also in Poland. The Polish lyrics "Czy ty naprawdę masz tak przecudowną twarz..." did not quite exactly match the English text's idea (the English translation of it would be more less, like : Do you really have/ such beautiful face/ or it only seemed so to me?). It was recorded by Chór Dana for Polish "Odeon" and their interpretation was one of the few cases when the original Polish recording was bought for the commercial German label pressing.

JOHN JEAN GOLDKETTE (1893--1962) was a jazz pianist and bandleader born in Patras, Greece. Goldkette spent his childhood in Greece and Russia, and emigrated to the United States in 1911. He led many jazz and dance bands, of which the best known was his Victor Recording Orchestra of 1924 -- 1929, which included, at various times, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael,Chauncey Morehouse, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Bill Rank, Eddie Lang, Frankie Trumbauer, Pee Wee Russell, Steve Brown, Doc Ryker and Joe Venuti, among others. Vocalists included the Keller Sisters and Lynch. In his Jazz Masters of the Thirties, Rex Stewart, a member of Fletcher Henderson's band at the time, writes that the Goldkette band's innovative arrangements and strong rhythm made it the best dance band of its day and "the first original white swing band in jazz history." Jean was also the Music Director for the Detroit Athletic Club for over 20 years, and was also co-owner of the legendary Graystone Ballroom with Charles Horvath, who also performed with the Goldkette Victor Band in its early years. Jean owned his own entertainment company called "Jean Goldkette's Orchestras and Attractions," and worked out of the still-standing Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit.
In 1927, Paul Whiteman, the controversially self-proclaimed "King of Jazz," hired away most of Goldkette's better players due to Goldkette not being able to meet the payroll for his top-notch musicians. Goldkette later helped organize McKinney's Cotton Pickers and Glen Gray's Orange Blossoms, which became famous as the Casa Loma Orchestra. In the 1930s he left jazz to work as a booking agent and classical pianist. In 1939, he organized the American Symphony Orchestra which debuted at Carnegie Hall, and also married for the first time, to a lady named Lee McQuillen from New York City. He moved to California in 1961, and the following year died in Santa Barbara, California, of a heart attack.

My first multitrack for YouTube. This is a slight departure from the original. The main vocals & rhythm guitar are live. I then added the bass(the Schecter Elite in the video's background), lead and harmony in Pro Tools. Hope you enjoy this bubble-gum rocker. It was fun.

I started posting videos so I can share my music with people all over the world. As for me, I always seem to be watching funny kittens & puppies or any other super cute pet videos. Yes, I admit to being a cat person. Dogs are cool but cats curl up on your keyboard when you're working and give you an excuse to sit on your butt. I enjoy Family Guy, love Robot Chicken, SNL, Inuyasha, Naruto (most anime), Fruits Basket, American Idol and old Westerns. The Office is a great comedy but very embarrassing (secret crush on Dwight). A lot of people ask if I'm either Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino / Pinay, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Laotian, Thai, Cambodian, even Irish!? Well, these are all fine people but I'm proud to be one-hundred percent Burmese by ethnicity and American by culture.
And now a little rant... I've noticed something about females in my generation. I live by a skate-park and everytime I pass-by "busty teen babes" just sit idly on their hands, acting sexy, as guys perform skateboard tricks and stunts (not idle). The girls' dress code is the "all empowering" "look at my breasts" camisoles or the popular "I just got boobs" tank top, paired with hot ultra low rider "look at my pubic bone" jeans, thong or g-string. Being half nude sex objects for boys to show off to one another is a dead-end road girl.
Anyway, hope I didn't bore you but I'm a yapper.
