She Loves Me Now
Beres Hammond
She loves me now
And that just means I can't complain
She loves me now
And I must admit I feel the same
Listen now
Early one Sunday morning
As I took up my paper and decided to read
The phone rang with a little voice saying
"You might not remember me but I had one dance with you
And ever since the night we met, I must tell you true
You danced into my life, drove me out of my mind
Now between and me and my man it's all over"
That's what she said
"I just want us now to get closer"
She loves me now
That just means I can't complain
She loves me now
And I must admit I feel the same
I knew something special would have to come out
'Cause the way with the woman there was no doubt
We would have to see eachother and it would not be long
Before we'd hit it off with a love that's strong, strong, strong
And I know someone out there is hurt, but got to get it on
It's natural that we were meant for eachother
If you run your life the way you dance
I'd be proud of that night I made my advance
She loves me now
And that just means I can't complain
She loves me now
And I must admit I feel the same
She loves me now
After the night we danced on the floor
She loves me now (Less) Channel: youtube

It's hard to see why a talented group like Earth & Stone never achieved the level of success and notoriety that they deserved. Unique in the fact that they were a harmony duo (instead of a trio) who interchanged between lead and harmony vocals, Albert Bailey and Clifton Howell make their mark on the listener with heartfelt singing and well-crafted roots melodies. In this collection of tunes recorded at Channel One Studio for JoJo Hookim between 1973 and 1978, Earth & Stone display the range of their wonderful, emotive vocals, crooning militant tunes like "False Ruler" intermingled with dreamy, hopeful numbers like the "Satta Amassagana"-like "Holy Land of Home," alongside sorrowful tracks like the all-time classic "Jail House Set Me Free" (AKA "Jah Will Cut You Down," featured on Reggae's Greatest Hits Volume 4) and love songs like "That's the Way You Feel." Dub versions of all 10 tracks are included, and while they are solid, they aren't particularly necessary; the vocals are what make Earth and Stone stand out. Although, as the liner notes of Kool Roots state, little is known about Earth & Stone and what happened to them after 1978, fans of more legendary roots harmony groups of the '70s like The Mighty Diamonds, The Wailing Souls, and The Abyssinians should certainly check this album out.

In the last half century the rapid development of Jamaican music has been subject to many different forces - social, political, cultural, and political, cultural and musical. Of all these influences that of American popular music has been one of the most signifigant.
And so the sway of American popular music has continued through until the present day, with Jamaica mirroring many of the movements, innovations, styles and concerns of its larger neighbour. One such a movement was the emergence of the sound of Philadelphia, the musical bridge between Motown and disco, a brand of soul which tends not to receive proper critical respect-no doubt partly, but perversely, due to its commercial success. If the engine of the Philly sound was session band M.F.S.B. so the rhythm was driven for Channel One by the immortal Revolutionaries. And the sweet harmonies of ballad groups such as the Delphonics and the Stylistics surely had a direct effect on the Jamaican vocal groups of the same era, as is evidenced by the Channel One output of the Mighty Diamonds, the Rolands, the Wailing Souls, the Meditations, Black Uhuru, the Jays and Earth & Stone.
In 1972 Earth & Stone made their way, like so many other Jamaican artists, down to Brentford Road to work up their skills at Studio One. In 1973 they progressed to Channel One where they began to record for Jo Jo and Ernest Hoo Kim. As was common for the time their material was a mix of lovers and roots but with the balance tipped to the cultural side. Between 1973 and 1978 tunes such as "Jah Will Cut You Down" and "Three Wise Men" became popular on Channel One's Hitbound imprint. The duo of Albert Bailey and Clifton Howell created their own unique vocal interchange sound, each taking turn at lead and harmony. The "Kool Roots" set was out initally in1978 and collates most of the group's songs for the label. It's unusual for the time in that the vocal and dub sets were released together in the UK by Cha Cha containing both albums within a gatefold sleeve, an expense not usually afforded for reggae release and even the artwork was above the usual standard.
The Pressure Sounds re-issue of this reggae classic has the customary sleeve notes by Steve Barker and certain elements of the original artwork are utilised. There is an eight page full colour booklet with photographs from the period of both Earth & Stone and the Channel One studio. (Less) Channel: youtube

ASWAD
The band's formation in 1975 and their full emergence in 1976, when they were snapped up by Island Records, marked a significant point in Reggae history because they were the first UK band to be signed by a major company. Not only was Aswad's sound authentic and militant but positively original, unlike many of their Jamaican counterparts.
Aswad's first single was released in 1976. "Back To Africa", featuring a cool, rock-steady rhythm and crisp rim shots from Drummie, it was a soaring vocal cry for a return to their homeland. The dub side was a wicked bass and drum scorcher giving scope to those aching harmonies and. like the vocal mix, proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that good reggae could be made right here in Britain. The proof of their acceptance by reggae purists was when "Back To Africa" rocketed to Number One in the reggae charts. The band's debut album, simply entitled "Aswad" confirmed their remarkable talent and originality. From the lovers-rock inspired "Irie Woman" through to such beautiful dub passages as "Ethiopian Rhapsody" the music reflected the experience of British blacks. This was particularly evident on their second single, "Three Babylon", released in 1976. The song struck out against the continual harassment of young blacks by the police.
Aswad eventually broke away from Island to release "It's not Our Wish", "It's not our wish that we should fight but it's our wish that we should be free, equal rights stands for all, equal rights that's all we want". They got involved in 'Rock Against Racism', touring the West coast of Africa eventually going to Jamaica to work on new material.
1979 saw the release of their second album "Hulet", the last three years had seen a dramatic change in their music. their sound had matured and benefited form other musical influences, particularly jazz fusion's. After releasing several move respected singles the end of 1980 saw Aswad move to CBS Records with who they released two albums "New Chapter" and "Not Satisfied", together with a brilliant single called "Finger Style Gun". The dub of "New Chapter" appeared on the band's own Simba label via Island.
The CBS years, however, were not the greatest period in the band's history. The "Not Satisfied" album edged into the national charts but it was a time when the band was consolidating, rather than progressing. They quit the label at the end of 1982 and released the single "Roots Rockin", on Samba the following year before re-signing to Island.
Aswad's recognition as one of the worlds finest reggae bands came after the release of their first live album "Live & Direct", recorded at The Nottinghill Carnival in '83. The band soon began work on a new album "Rebel Souls", recorded in both Jamaica and London the first single released from the album "Chasing For The Breeze" gave the band it's first chart hit. The albums release came at the end of October 1984 coinciding with Aswad's most extensive tour of Britain ending at London's Dominion Theatre.
By '87 Aswad were Brinsley Forde, Tony Gad and Drummie Zeb they recorded a new album called 'Distant Thunder' and as a prelude to the album's release the "Don't Turn Around" single hit the shops in early February entering the British pop charts st No:1! the albums release followed this success by reaching number 10 in the album charts. The second single "Give A Little Love", made the top 30 followed by "Set Them Free" the song Aswad performed at the Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley Stadium.
Aswad's next single "On and On" entered the top twenty in July '89 after which the band flew to Jamaica to begin work on their new LP. Produced by Gusie Clark and mixed by Stephen Stanley and Drummie, the album saw a return to their harder reggae sound. Special guests include Jamaican reggae star Shabba Ranks and hot new percussionists Steely and Clevie.
In between studio work Aswad returned to Britain for Nelson Mandela Day in May, and were received by an almost ecstatic crowd, while the same atmosphere prevailed when they headlined the Reggae Sunsplash in Jamaica a month later. (Less) Channel: youtube

It's a love song. Maya is both a name and a word which connotes illusion and enchantment.!
As an artist, Raman continues to develop and explore issues of identity with new sounds that celebrate multiplicity. She draws her collaborators from across Europe, Asia, and Africa: Cameroonian bassist Hilaire Penda, Guinea-Bissau born percussionist Djanuno Dabo, American drummer Marque Gilmore, British-Asian tabla player Aref Durvesh, and of course British guitarist and producer Sam Mills are at the heart of this album as they were on Salt Rain.
Salt Rain (album) was recorded between October and December 2000 (except Mamavatu which was recorded the preceding February for the Gifted album on Real World). We were lucky to collaborate with some unique musicians who live mostly in London and Paris but are of diverse origins: Guinea Bissau, Cameroun, India, Romania, France, Greece, Egypt, Kenya, America, and Spain. Any record is a meeting of many minds and, now more than ever, it is networks of people, not just individuals, that spark new and exciting work. Everyone brought their own special energy to the music and I am very proud of what we all worked together to create.
By Kabir Davis:
This album, the debut of Joi's Susheela Raman, was recently nominated for the Mercury Award 2001, Britain's foremost reward to new artists with distinct creative ability. She was beaten by PJ Harvey's new set, but nevertheless, it brought to the attention of Europe the talents of a brilliant new songstress.
'Salt Rain' is by far one of the best fusion albums I have heard. I always thought that only Kila and Afro Celt Sound System knew how to make a good record, and when I first heard of Joi through Real World, I was a little skeptical. On those early records, Susheela stands out, but no one could predict that a solo career would bring so much promise to the world of new age music.
That said, Susheela's work here should be compared to Auroville's Nadaka, as well as M. S. Subbalakshmi, and Dead Can Dance. While she no doubt uses these influences in her vocal style and song structure, she is very much an independent and original artist. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. The first time I really listened to it was on headphones, which I thought was the proper method to appreciate a work of this sort.
Strangely enough, Susheela's more interesting moments come when she thoroughly bungles up the lyrical content of a song. You must remember that this album is a celebration of the singer as an Indian. The tracks are sung in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Sanskrit. The ones in Sanskrit work best, but the Tamil tracks are inexplicable. While her diction is less than flattering on these tracks, it does lend the songs a certain listenability - more so because all the words are phonetically reproduced in English in the liner notes.
I think Susheela lost out on the Mercury because the album is far too experimental for the common listener. PJ Harvey, who I think is the poor-man's Fiona Apple, had a great record last year, but its nothing as groundbreaking and revolutionary as 'Salt Rain'. There are a few songs here in English, but to be honest, they are the least compelling of the set. Susheela scores best when shes singing in Indian languages.
Of all the tracks, I personally connected with 'Mamavatu'. This song reminded me of attending a Hindu temple in Thanjavur, South India, when I was a child over ten years ago. I haven't heard a song so deeply capture the beauty and spirit of Southern India the way this song does. The last time I heard something like this was on 'Nama Shivaya' by Nadaka, but you can only get that one on the limited French Edition of 'Origines'.
Susheela's record label has done us a huge service by releasing this album with all the respect a record of this magnitude deserves. All the musicians are given a page with their picture, and Susheela herself appears very briefly on the painted page. The album booklet is thorough, informative, and a classy production. Lisa Gerrard would do well to learn from Raman's mastery of putting together a debut album package.
Unfortunately, this record is not being heard of in America. In France, its a consistent top seller, and its always near the top of the British new age charts. Pity, because the US always misses out on the best musicians (Vanessa Paradis, Axelle Red, The Sealand Poets, All Saints) in favor of lesser, more vapid talent (Spears, Aguilera, Timberlake). Also, with the new success of Afro Celt Sound System in America, one would think that Raman would leap up the charts as well. Well, she deserves to. If theres one new age or classical album you intend purchasing this year, let it be this one.
Highly recommended. (Less) Channel: youtube

Their sound can be defined as ska punk, mixing elements of ska, surf punk, reggae rock, dub music and alternative rock to create a reggae, upbeat sound. They mainly play in small clubs or in larger ska shows. They are making a name for themselves in the Canadian music scene and are well known in the Greater Toronto Area. Their most prominent influence is California band Sublime. The band found their break when they decided to play outside the 2004 Vans Warped Tour venue in front of fans waiting in line to get in, using a generator to power their equipment. Kevin Lyman, the Warped Tour organizer and co-owner of Warcon Enterprises, noticed them and invited them to play at his personal barbecue.[2] Subsequently, they were offered spots on the tour for the following two years. In September 2006, the band played at the inaugural Virgin Festival in Toronto. illScarlett's song "Who's Got It" was selected as the official song for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup soccer tournament hosted in Toronto, Ontario. The band finished recording their first major album (All Day With It) in Los Angeles, California under the production of Matthew Wilder, producer of No Doubt's multi-platinum Tragic Kingdom album. The new album was released on July 10th 2007 across North America. It was a great success. It includes new songs such as Who's Got It, Paradise Burning and Life of a Soldier. Also on the album are redone old songs such as Nothing Special, N.T.F (Next Time Forever), Clearer Now and Pacino. Their new single is "Nothing Special", which was previously on their independent release Clearly in Another Fine Mess. Band member Johnny Doherty is the son of the late Denny Doherty, tenor of The Mamas and Papas. They are also noted for their promotion of the legalization of marijuana, as they have played a few times at the Global Marijuana March in Toronto, and have also been known to throw out rolling papers and joints at concerts. Many of their songs also cover this topic, including: Who's Got It, One-A, and Mary Jane. She is the reigning Queen of Haitian Song: a captivating performer, versatile vocalist and one of the premier Haitian songwriters of her generation. She has recorded and appeared on concert stages throughout the Caribbean, Europe, and North & South America for over 20 years. Singing both in French and Haitian Creole, her nine albums, Douvanjou ka leve (May the Sun Rise), Pa gen manti nan sa (There's No Doubt), Rhum & Flamme (Rum & Flame), Tout Mon Temps (All My Time), The Very Best, Ban'm pase (Let Me Pass), Cordes et Ame (Strings and Soul), Rasin Kreyol (Creole Roots), and Reine de Cour (Queen of Hearts) have catapulted her to international acclaim.
This album opened multiple doors on the international scene and Emeline had the opportunity to showcase her talents and the musc of Haiti on National Public Radio, CBC Radio, Canadian television, and top venues and festivals such as Reggae on the River, Mountain Stage, the Getty Center, Stern Grove, Montréal Jazz Festival, Philadelphia's Kimmel Center and a three‐day series at Carnegie Hall.
Jon Pareles, principal popular music critic for The New York Times, reviewing a Joe's Pub performance described her as "the dancing ambassador with a voice serene and warm like a breeze". The Times also printed a major artistic profile of Emeline on November 19, 2004 entitled "A Diplomat of Music, Longing for Her Homeland".
La Presse de Montréal, the leading newspaper in Québec described the music on Rasin Kreyol as "concentrated with sun, tears, sand, and mud on the musical genres of Kompa, Rara, and sacred and profound rhythms, these ' kreyol roots' [Rasyn Creoles] find again a way to nourish themselves from the deserted soil of the magic land [Haiti]", and cited Rasin Kreyol as the Best World Music Album of 2004.
In 2006, Emeline was chosen from among the multitude of talented New York‐based performers to deliver the headline performance for the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative, a conclave of over 2000 world dignitaries, thinkers, presidents and world leaders brought together by former President Bill Clinton.
On December 2007 Emeline was invited as the guest of honor at Music en Folie, an annual national music fair in Port‐au‐Prince, Haiti. The occasion was a pre‐release of her 2008 CD (and 9th album), Reine de Coeur, a jewel of 14 songs. Rustic and rhythmic, profound and personal, Reine de Coeur reaches you to the core. Conceptualized and written between Africa and Haiti, and recorded in Haiti, New York, Montreal and Burkina Faso (French West Africa) with a team of 35 musicians, this is Emeline's third consecutive turn in the producers chair in addition to her roles as vocalist and songwriter. Spicy, crunchy, sweet, Reine de Coeur is loaded with delectable music morsels and autobiographic stories such as Gade Papi (Look Papa) which reminds us to dream our dreams, Maricela and Banda.
Haiti's leading daily paper Le Nouvelliste observed, "Emeline [Reine de Coeur] is selling like hot cakes .... Just as every citizen has a national identity card, every Haitian should have one Emeline CD at their home". Reine de Coeur has been universally acclaimed and once again the "Horse of Fire" (Emeline's production company Production Cheval de Feu) has left its mark with rich and beautiful album that sets a new standard for Haitian music. The attack on The World Trade Centre in America!Together with producer paul Van Ostren Chiozo put together a song about the attack. In the studio, a TV set kept broadcasting the image over and over intensifying the importance of the lyrics. At the time, the lyric in the bridge "Nobody is innocent" seemed controversial. But years later doubt has irreversably been shed on the innocence of the Bush administration. At the time Chiozo felt that his mission had begun.Today many recordings later Chiozo is ready to let the world know of his potential to chronicle world events and sentiments in a style so well done by Bob Marley. The song is not in reggae style, but there is no doubt of reggaes influence in the soul, feeling and lyrics of reggaes unknown legend....Chiozo (Less) Channel: youtube
