Next is that the John who comes to see her must say he's the utilities serviceman, come "for the gas." After that, we find that the respectable men in town from bourgeoisie and the working class, are also there "for the gas." It's like prohibibition era speakeasy where everyone had to give a password to get in. "Jacques Brel"of the Dialogus website says the essence of this song is about "text and pretext", hypocrisy, people pretending to be what they're not. The assemblage of men in this small funky house reminded Brel of the Marx Brothers famous cabin scene. Ema, of Rennes France tells me "my sisters hand" reminds her of an expression, "My sister's hand in the pants of a Zouave." Brel's hand gesture seems to confirm that.Thank's to Ema for her help with the translation of this funny song, full of alliterations and poetic devices best listened to in French. There's a Mort Shuman terrible adaptation of this is called Taxicab in the JB is Alive and Well movie. (Less)

They met in 1954 and remained inseparable friends all through life ("L'ami Jojo" of Les Bourgeois) until Jojo's death from cancer in 1974. The depth and longevity of this relationship led Brel to celebrate "l'amiti," friendship as preferable to "l'amour," love, which often ends in bitterness and disappointment. His last private plane which he flew in the Marquesas bore the name "Jojo." (See it at the end of the video.) After Jojo died Jacques suffered a deep depression and a month later found he had lung cancer. This song was taken from his last album, the song of dying man's undying love for his best friend. Do not leave me Do not leave me I'll weep no more, I'll speak no more, I'll hide right here, I'll watch you dance and smile and listen to you sing and laugh Let me become the shadow of your shadow, the shadow of your hand, the shadow of your dog, but... do not leave me (Less)

Immediately recognizable as the 7-Up, "Uncola man", his distinctive bass voice, heavy accent and hearty laugh are legendary. This is a clip from his "nightclub act" that was filmed at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater, New York City. Geoffrey is 6'6" tall and shaved his head long before it was cool. Much has been said and written about his stormy adolescence and his substance abuse problem and of the impossible loves that have marked his music, but nothing can tarnish a talent that seems destined to be up there with the greats. He's proud to imbibe the essence of artists like Scott Walker, Jacques Brel or Edith Piaf on albums such as Rufus Wainwright (98) --Best New Artist in Rolling Stone Magazine -, Poses (01), Want one (03) or Want two (04), which all display a talent not common these days. Along with French songs, his influences include opera, musicals and cabaret. Excessive, ironic, baroque... Rufus, who adores Franz Schubert and Judy Garland equally, has also worked on soundtracks for films like The Aviator, The Diary of Bridget Jones, I am Sam, Zoolander, Shrek and Moulin Rouge, to name but a few. On Release the stars, his fifth album, with its status as a classic already guaranteed, he has once again proved that as well as a composer and an incredible performer, he's the best in melodramatic pop. All his new songs continue to ooze both opulence and intimacy, and the contrasts of an artist who is possibly more theatrical than musical. The Malaga concert features: RUFUS WAINWRIGHT -- acoustic guitar, piano and vocals, JEFF HILL -- bass, CARMEN GREIDER -- electric and acoustic guitar and banjo, WILL VINSON -- sax and flute, CJ CAMERIERI -- trompeta, LOUIS SCHWADRON -- trumpet, GERRY LEONARD -- electric guitar, MATT JOHNSON -- drums. EVERYONE IS ALWAYS DELIGHTED TO SEE GEOFFREY HOLDER!!!
I first met Geoffrey in 1975 at a very crowded gallery opening of his work somewhere on Madison Avenue in NYC. Those were the days when video cameras had very bright lights. During the entire event that camera followed Geoffrey (who was the tallest person in the room) everywhere. I sensed his shyness and wondered if he needed a break. I asked him if he would like to sit and chat. Relieved, to be out of the spotlight, he said, "I'D LIKE THAT", and we became immediate friends. Geoffrey was, FAMOUS AT STUDIO 54. With his height, you could recognize him from anywhere in the room and everyone loved him. Today, whenever I'm out in the city with Geoffrey total strangers come up and give him a hug. It's a little startling, especially for him. I'm 5'10" and they always ask if I'm his bodyguard. I've gotten used to it; after all, they're just trying to get HIS attention.
He's is a wonderful and special man, mentor and a really inspirational friend. When you're with Geoffrey, one minute you're walking down Broadway and suddenly find yourself, "SKIPPING ON DOWN, THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD." AMAZING!!! Surprised, well yeah, but after all he is the man who created and directed The Broadway Musical, "THE WIZ". I'm sure you'll agree Geoffrey Holder is "MARVELOUS, ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS... HA, HA, HA, HA!"
Thank you for watching.
Sincerely,

A rare performance and glimpse into the "life and philosophy" of this multi-talented celebrity.
Immediately recognizable as the 7-Up, "Uncola man", his distinctive bass voice, heavy accent and hearty laugh are legendary. This is a clip from his "nightclub act" that was filmed at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater, New York City. Geoffrey is 6 foot 6 inches tall and shaved his head long before it was cool.
Geoffrey won the 1975 Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical, "The Wiz" (1975), the all-African American retelling of "The Wizard of Oz". That same year he was also awarded the Tony for best costume design and was nominated again for the original 1978 Broadway musical "Timbuktu!", which he also directed and choreographed. As a choreographer, he has created dance pieces for many companies, including the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and The Dance Theatre of Harlem.
Painter, director, set and costume designer, choreographer, dancer, actor, musician and showman; Geoffrey Holder is both colleague and friend to many, many international celebrities: Alvin Ailey, Woody Allen / Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask), Harold Arlen /House of Flowers, Charles Aznavour, George Balanchine / House of Flowers, Pearl Bailey / House of Flowers, Josephine Baker / Josephine Baker and Her Company, Ray Bolger/ Tony Award Presenter, Jacques Brel, Truman Capote / House of Flowers, Diahann Carroll / House of Flowers, Carol Channing / costumes, Noel Coward / Androcles and the Lion, Bette Davis, Johnny Depp / Charlie and the Chocolate Factory / Reader, Marlene Dietrich, Duke Ellington, Ian Fleming / Live or Let Die, Joao Gilberto Amoroso / Brasil / cover, James Earl Jones / Swashbuckler, Grace Jones / Boomerang, Martha Graham, Rex Harrison / Doctor Dolittle as William Shakespeare the Tenth, Helen Hays, Lena Horne / portrait, John Huston / Annie as Punjab, Michael Jackson, Brian Keith, Eartha Kitt / Boomerang / Timbuktu / Director, Claude Lelouch / Hasards of Coincidences, Stephanie Mills / The Wiz/director, Sal Mineo / Aladdin, Arthur Mitchell / Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ricardo Montalban / portrait, Melba Moore /Timbuktu, Roger Moore / James Bond / Live or Let Die / actor / choreographer, Eddie Murphy / Boomerang, Odetta, Anthony Perkins / portrait, Sidney Poitier, Herbert Ross / House of Flowers / Doctor Dolittle, Maximillan Schell, Jane Seymour / Live or Let Die, Bobby Short, Nina Simone, Charlie Smalls, Sharon Stone / Inspired her to "leave home and go into the business", Gloria Swanson and the list goes on... Geoffrey performed, "Under The Sea" from "The Little Mermaid" at the 62nd Academy Awards (1990 Oscars).
Much like his longtime friend Bill Cosby, Geoffrey is both teacher and "Renaissance Man". When he commands the audience to "STAND UP, UP, UP, UP!" and then insists that everyone "PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE" to GOD, THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, THE MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, to JESUS, MOSES, BUDDAH AND ALLAH... He is "More Evangelist than Showman". Geoffrey burns with THEOSOPHY and UNIVERSAL LOVE.
