Ed Saindon's latest CD is Depth of Emotion from World Improvised Music which features the blend of Dave Liebman's soprano along with Ed Saindon's vibes, piano and marimba. The quartet's focus is on group dialogue, improvisation, and spontaneity played with an extreme dynamic range. The repertoire focuses on original compositions that evoke a wide range of emotions for the listener. The music can best be described as contemporary jazz that ranges from delicate lyricism to intense, virtuosic displays played with abandon.
"The aspect of this recording that impressed me the most is the incredible uniformity of the compositions; yet within each tune, there are different sets of musical challenges especially in the harmonic realm. The combination of the vibes with the soprano is a lovely texture that I had never before explored. Ed's music is very listenable, and at the same time quite sophisticated." Dave Liebman
Ejazznews review of Depth of Emotion published January, 01, 2008:
"Crafting a unique blend of contemporary jazz, pianist Ed Saindon and saxophonist Dave Liebman offer a session of cutting edge music with intelligent charts and spontaneous improvisation to produce a quality recording with "Depth of Emotion." Saindon, who not only plays the piano, but is also a four mallet vibist and plays the marimba as well, is featured as co-leader with Liebman who performs on the soprano sax. The duo are accompanied by bassist David Clark and Mark Walker on the drums forming one tight quartet.
Except for two standards provided fresh interpretations here, Saindon provides all original compositions. The quartet opens the music with the melancholy "The Last Goodbye" paying homage to the late Herb Pomeroy with whom Saindon performed for many years. On this tune Liebman introduces the music with his soprano voice eventually giving way to Saindon on the vibes then reengages to finish out a somber piece.
The group performs a light hearted rendition of the Kaper/Washington standard "Green Dolphin Street," where Liebman delivers some of his best solos of the album. Saindon provides an exquisite piano solo on one of the very best renditions of the Mancini/Mercer classic, "Moon River" I've ever heard as the saxophonist and pianist play off each other quite well.
Saindon leads off on the piano on "Tokyo Nights," later engaged by Liebman who together deliver another beautiful harmony in one of the best tunes here. The album ends featuring the pianist performing several short vignettes on the piano titled "Piano Solo Reflections."
This is one of those new 2008 releases containing a repertoire of refreshing new music that critics and the average jazz audiences will love. Assembling a unique combo, With "Depth of Emotion," Ed Saindon and Dave Liebman chart a new course in modern jazz that deserves serious attention."

German music publisher Advance Music has just released Exploration in Rhythm, Volume 1, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation by Ed Saindon. This is the first book of a series (for all instruments) dealing with advanced rhythmic concepts for the improvisor and composer. Saindon is a Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston where he has been teaching since 1976 and has developed the concepts addressed in the book through his jazz improvisation course at the college.
Exploration in Rhythm, Rhythmic Phrasing in Improvisation will develop and expand the rhythmic palette and vocabulary of the improviser and composer. The book specifically addresses the concept of over-the-bar line phrasing via rhythmic groupings of 8ths, triplets, 16ths and polyrhythms in 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4. Working on these concepts, players should begin to "hear" rhythms that "float over the barline" as well as develop the ability to execute phrases over longer periods of time. The end result will be a sonic erasing of the bar line and an enhanced sense of freedom with regard to rhythm and phrasing. Exploration in Rhythm includes endorsements/quotes from Dave Douglas, Dave Liebman and Hal Crook.

About this video:
This video footage is from a concert that I did with pianist Dick Whittington. The concert took place on June, 9th, 2006 at the Jazz School in Berkeley, California. I did a clinic in the afternoon and this video was taken at the night concert. After the concert, Dick and I headed up north for a concert in Mendocino. The clinic and concerts were funded by friend and jazz supporter Monterey Jack. (Less) Channel: youtube

"My name is Tidus Yumemiru, I am an angel born near the magical Sylvari Tree..... enlisted by the gods as an envoy
my job was to escort newborn souls to their bodies as they drew their first breath, and to escort them back when they drew there last
There they became the filament that sparkles in the sun by day, and glow that light the fireflies at night.
I was honored to have the power, to help bring life into the world. And to clean the wounds and tears of those ready to be taken to the next realm.
Then one day, as I turned to leave a newborn soul to enter the world, I was summoned by the gods to take her back ...."
I saw the young mother, pleading at Dwayna's shrine, offering anything to save her unborn child, knowing that when a monk prophesizes a child's fate -- it shall become true.
My heart broke for her, as i had only just graced her with her wish, to have to now strip it from her she seemed as if she would perish if she couldn't gaze into the eyes of the child she so dearly wanted.
It was all I could bear just to stand there knowing the fate of her child was in my hands. It was then that I chose bestowed the child's spirit back to its mother,
I knew I had challenged fate that day, and I would soon have to answer the Gods for it. But as the mother stood up, her face suddenly calm with a sense of well being; I knew I did what was right.
The Gods were furious with me. I told them of the mothers' desperate plea and ever sworn service to Dwayna if she could only spare her child, but this was not good enough for them. I professed my good intentions, and they cruelly cursed me for it by stripping me of my power to carry life to the next world. They bound my soul to a sword of great power, made in the bowels of grenths deep underworld to slay souls that escaped his realm. I was now invisible to all except the wielder of this sword whom I would have to serve and protect whether I wanted to or not. And to make matters worse i cannot die, nor can i age whilst bound to this cursed sword.
The gods wanted me to see how it feels to have no choice in a matter that should have been theirs in the beginning. I was now forced to bring death to those I encountered. I was now, the Soul Slayer (Less) Channel: youtube

THE SUTRA OF COMPLETE ENLIGHTENMENT
Translated from the Chinese of Buddhatrata by Ven. Guo-go Bhikshu
"Virtuous man, while the motion is going on, it is impossible for those things to be still. How much more would this be so if one were to discern the Complete Enlightenment of the Buddha with the defiled mind of birth and death, which has never been pure; how could it not [appear to] be in motion? [2] For this reason, you gave rise to these three doubts.
"Virtuous man, for example, because of an illusory illness [of the eye], a flower is falsely seen in an empty sky. When the illusory illness [of the eye] is eliminated, one does not say: 'Now that this illness is eliminated, when will other illnesses arise?' Why? Because the illness [3] and the flower [4] are not in opposition. Likewise, when the flower vanishes into the empty sky, one does not say: 'When will flowers appear in the sky again?' Why? Because the sky originally has no flowers! There is no such thing as appearing and vanishing. Birth and death and nirvana are like the appearing and vanishing [flowers in the sky], while the perfect illumination of wondrous enlightenment is free from flowers or illnesses.
"Virtuous man, you should know that the empty sky does not temporarily exist and then temporarily not exist. How much more so in the case of the Tathagata who is in accordance with Complete Enlightenment, which is comparable to the equal intrinsic nature of empty space.
"Virtuous man, it is like smelting gold ore. The gold does not exist because of the smelting. As it has become [perfect] gold, it will not become ore again. Even after an inexhaustible period of time, the nature of the gold will not deteriorate. Therefore, one should not say that gold is not intrinsically perfect in itself. Likewise, the same holds true with Tathagata's Complete Enlightenment.
"Virtuous Man, the wondrous and completely enlightened mind of all Tathagatas is originally without bodhi or nirvana; it has nothing to do with accomplishing Buddhahood or not accomplishing Buddhahood, illusory cyclic existence or noncyclic existence.
"Virtuous man, even the sravakas, who have perfected the state where [the karmic activities of] body, mind, and speech are entirely severed, are still unable to enter the nirvana that is personally experienced and manifested [by the Tathagata]. How can one possibly use one's conceptual mind to measure the realm of the Tathagata's Complete Enlightenment? It is comparable to using the light of a firefly to scorch Mount Sumeru; one would never be able to burn it! He who attempts to enter the Tathagata's ocean of great quiescent-extinction by using the cyclic mind and giving rise to cyclic views will never succeed. Therefore, I say that all bodhisattvas and sentient beings in the Dharma Ending Age should first sever the root of beginningless cyclic existence.
"Virtuous man, contrived conceptualizations come from the existence of a mind, which is a conditioned [conglomeration of] the six sense objects. The conditioned impressions of deluded thoughts are not the true essence of mind; rather, they are like flowers in the sky. The discernment of the realm of Buddhahood with such conceptualization is comparable to the production of empty fruit by the empty flower. One merely revolves in this entanglement of deluded thoughts and gains no result.
"Virtuous man, deluded groundless thinking and cunning views cannot accomplish the expedient methods of Complete Enlightenment. Discriminations such as these are not correct." (Less) Channel: youtube

(...before reading this?)
Ganon, having recently escaped from the clutches of The Pit, manifests in the realm of Hyrule. Vengeful for his previous defeat in the hands of princess Zelda, the infuriated fiend immediately forms a hasty plan to exact revenge.
Still debilitated from his imprisonment, Ganon summons his loyal aide, Gwonam, to offer minute insight on the matter. Gwonam deduces that Ganon should enlist the aid of The Birds in order to stand a chance against the royal family, having lost a considerable amount of his sorcerous powers to the bindings of The Pit.
Not short of raw willpower and lust for his corrupted sense of justice Ganon, struggling with his not yet fully recovered presence, attempts to persuade The Birds to join his side...
Woefully for him, Zelda has already caught wind of his nefarious intentions, and quickly intervenes. Ganon's reign of power ceases, never standing a true chance to rise.
Overjoyed by her swift victory Zelda returns back triumphant. A displeased Gwonam, however, feigns defeat, retreating behind the curtains with unknown intentions. Back in the royal castle, The King celebrates in his neverchanging personal style: consuming Ganon's remains for dinner (accompanied with a little pseudo-heroic speech). But what happened to Gwonam, the enigmatic sage? None knows for now... (Less) Channel: youtube

"They (More) Members of the Fresno-based "Brotherhood of the Badge" traveled to Afghanistan last week to assess needs of the war-torn country's police and firefighters and then help. "They don't have any equipment there. Imagine going to a battle or a suicide bombing where the vehicle is on fire and you have very little or even no equipment," said Ken Shockley, spokesman for the Fresno Fire Department. It's the same concept that fuels "Brotherhood of the Badge." The non-profit organization was born in 2003 when veteran Fresno police officer Michael Harris recognized the need to equip Iraqi police. "They're expected to do the same job in a worse scenario with less to work with," Harris said. "One police officer will usually come to the aid of another police officer. Across the world, no matter where we live, we have a common bond." Harris took the department's surplus of unusable or expired equipment - slated for disposal - and shipped it overseas. The mission has since grown. On Feb. 4, Harris, along with Fresno City Councilmember Jerry Duncan and representatives from the police and fire departments, made a special trip. "The last mission to Afghanistan was quite a revelation because of the need of fire equipment. They basically don't have anything in that realm," Harris reiterated. The crew brought with them 50 sets of vests, radios and flashlights plus water hoses, nozzles and fire gear. They say a look at Kabul police - who also serve as the city's firefighters - is proof this gear and equipment will make all the difference. "They're standing on the street corners protecting and directing traffic where suicide bombers have been known to attack. They don't have any body armor. They're wearing a shirt, a cap. They're holding an AK-47 or a pistol," Shockley said. The group returned last Friday; they're already preparing to send more gear to Afghanistan's police and firefighters soon. "Afghanistan is a great country. It has a great culture and great people. Those people want to be free and that's what America is all about: helping people become free," Duncan boasted. "And the people in Afghanistan now know about our city and how we want to help." Fellow Fresno police officer and "Brotherhood" co-founder Brian Burry says it's hope for this war-torn country and also hope for the U.S. "When they buy in and have equity of their freedom, they'll fight. We help with this surplus equipment. It makes sense to get them strong on their feet and get our men and women out of there sooner." Since 2003, "Brotherhood of the Badge" has sent more than 20,000 bulletproof vests and thousands of helmets and radios into the Iraqi theater. More than 100 law enforcement agencies from across the U.S. have donated equipment to the cause. The organization hopes to add more fire departments to this growing donor list. After a long search, a lone young wizard has cornered the abomination in the wild and directly challenges its black magic in an effort to banish the monster from the realm." So here you have pure homegrown produced movie in every sense of the word. Shot, edited, produced, directed, and starring ME. I made this in the desert outside my town in the summer of 2002, mainly to prove that I could do it, to prove that I could make my own fanfilm and match wits with the big boys (this was back before Youtube was anything more than a wild fantasy, and you could still count amateur productions on the Internet on two hands). This was uploaded at the time to the cinema board of a UK based movie enthusiasts hub, where hundreds of movie makers shared films created with a particular brand of FX software, and on that forum its been downloaded over 14,000 times. Most of the FX here were created with that software "Amateur Light and Magic," but there's also much to be said for simple reversed footage. ;) Some items of note: -It was shot over a period of 4 months, as I knew how it started before I figured out how to end it. I figured I would just shoot what I knew and figure the rest out later (as a result you can see the undergrowth change color throughout the movie). - Yes, I did it ALL myself, up to pressing REC on the camcorder and then running into frame to act out my part. - Not a single original sound remains. Everything was dubbed over in post (courtesy of my wide selection of horror sound effects). - The only spell effect that survived every single storyboard and reshoot was the Flying Sword of Black Magic (Mordenkainen's Sword for the D&D literate), an effect I was going to MAKE work even if I couldnt make it work. Acting it out was easy, but it took over a dozen separate renders in the software to get it exactly right (by comparison, the two shots with the flaming skull took only 3 TOTAL). - And yes, I do play both roles (surely you noticed that at no time is the villain and protagonist on the screen at the same time? ;) ) For the completionist, the opening crawl here isnt the same one I uploaded those many years ago. Back then I succumbed to Excessive Exposition-itis and gave it a full 60 seconds overload. Heeding the cries of my fans, this is the lean and mean version. So watch and enjoy! This is the origin of the "MUSE" in my name. Those rubber monster gloves? You didnt notice them in my production logo before every one of my new movies? Go watch, and you will... One look deeper into the elements that make up what Dark Grave truly is and it makes all the sense in the world.
We would like to present you with Dark Grave,a force different than most all that one will come across in the black/thrash/death "scene". Boots firmly placed in the realm of extreme metal from day one,Dark Grave emerged on the world in 1999,churning forth there first effort "Demonic Rebirth" that year. Crude to be sure, but as vile as anything any had heard.
"We totally flew by the skin of our teeth there"
With a fresh line-up,Dark Grave set forth to record what would turn out to be the demo that put then in the public eye. "Crimson Skies Over a Mountain of Death" showed the first true elements of what Dark Grave would become. The intensity, the over the top attitude, and all other things began to show the world the audio snarl that was forthcoming. Presenting a band that, without a shadow of a doubt, was clearly not concerned with fitting anyone ideas of what they should be doing. And since their first real show, once they burst onto the live scene, just happened to be on the main stage of a multi-thousand capacity arena, controversy aside, the sentiment was well recieved.
Through the years while getting everything primed and ready for what is now coming to fruition, many shows were played and stages conquered. Demos were released, from the "black n roll" battery of "Crawling Through the Remains of Angel Wings" to the simply titled, guttural and black as pitch "Kill Yourself" one thing and motto and has maintained throughout time: Push each note, each solo, each song, each recording as far as it'll go. Now with the impending release of the "The Only Viable Path" E.P. as well as the yet untitled full-length and coming tours,Dark Grave is here to stay and show each listener their amped up,specialized version of extreme metal. As for what to call it...
"We've been called everything. Call it black/thrash,call it black n roll, called blackened death/thrash,call it polka. It doesn't really matter. We're going to keep playing this music, this art, untill the skies bleed.Extreme metal vampires. The titles are up to you."
Death and sex indeed... (Less) Channel: youtube

This was uploaded at the time to the cinema board of a UK based movie enthusiasts hub, where hundreds of movie makers shared films created with a particular brand of FX software, and on that forum its been downloaded over 14,000 times.
Most of the FX here were created with that software "Amateur Light and Magic," but there's also much to be said for simple reversed footage. ;)
Some items of note:
-It was shot over a period of 4 months, as I knew how it started before I figured out how to end it.
- And yes, I do play both roles (surely you noticed that at no time is the villain and protagonist on the screen at the same time? ;) )
For the completionist, the opening crawl here isnt the same one I uploaded those many years ago.
