Students are guided towards (More) Systema Kadochnikova Russian Style Russian Martial Art is a system of education in human biomechanics and the study of human behavior under extreme situations. Students are guided towards introspection and exploration of their full human potential. Movement is natural and free, and acquiring skills is based on the study of Cossack and Russian folk dances, Slavic folklore, and "Natural Laws." The ancient Slavic martial traditions dates to the nomadic steppe-warriors of approximately 5,000 BCE, passed from father to son in families for generations of pre-Soviet Russia, and then only among the elite combat specialist subdivisions (SPETSNAZ) of the former USSR. Scott Sonnon, USA Sambo Team Coach and Trainer and World Sambo Vice-Champion, was the first foreigner accepted into this heritage in the attempt to bring the world together in fraternity. Sonnon imported the art to America in 1996 to improve the quality of life of his compatriots through the Russian health system, advanced sports biomechanics, and elite combative preparation. In 2000, one of the sportive derivations of Russian Martial Art, named Sambo, will be Olympic at the Sydney Games. Russian Martial Art derives its name ROSS from "ROSSIYA" which is the Russian spelling for the word RUSSIA. ROSS, a Russian acronym standing for "Russian Native Martial Art" was developed by Commander Alexander Retuinskih, President of the All-Russian Federation of Russian Martial Art (RFRMA), Chairman of the International Combat Sambo Commission, Chairman of the Russian Combat Sambo Committee, officer General of the Cossack Military. In 1991, the RFRMA was sanctioned by the Russian Olympic Committee as the sole representative of Russian Martial Art. ROSS is taught to trainers of Russian Spetsnaz units of the Ministries of Internal Affairs, Defense and protective services, Russian Marine troops, VDV, OMON, and Minsk's "Alpha" units in Byelorussia, special MVD units "Vityaz", frontier troops of Lithuania and many others. In Russian Martial Art, the main goal of a person is to render the adversary harmless while minimizing losses for both self and foe: to work efficiently in any situation. Learning Russian Martial Art, students acquire great power as fighters, but more importantly as a human beings, increasing ones value for health and life, for both self and others. Both in combat and in life, students treat other creatures with awareness and compassion. When necessary, firm action is issued, but never in a callous or careless manner, and when all other option have been considered. "Your life is not yours alone; it belongs to your friends, family and community" (Alexander Ivanovich Retuinskih), or as is said in the Cossack Cadet Code: "The life of your friend is always more valuable than your own. You can die yourself, but rescue your friend." ROSS undertakes training in 8 directions: 1.Russian-Style Close-Quarters Combat and Survival 2.Renovated SAMBO 3.Executive and Close Protection Training 4.Bayonet-Fencing 5.Advanced Sports Biomechanics 6.Acrobatic Dance, Stunt and Theatrical Combat 7.Russian System of Health and Wellness 8.Russian Fisticuffs (Less)

-A wide international distributed, small independent film from the filipino-american community, trying to showcase "less-known" america's minority, "Filipinos..."
Ever seen filipinos on US widescreen theaters...or just a "movie" at all?
-First independent Filipino-American produced-directed movie. A film about "identity?" ...are you "product of your environment" Are you "white/brown/black?"
-The "national and international" tour long gone...Been 9+ years since filming ended...Time for a "refresh" on the this movie, "re-introduce" the "filipino experience" of filipino culture "less known" to americans..
-The Debut movie is widely considered to be an accurate snapshot of contemporary Filipino American life, and touches upon a wide variety of cultural themes including immigrant identity, acculturation and assimilation, family honor, and colonialism.
-An award-winning English language film for the whole family, "the Debut" revolves a talented high school senior who has rejected his Filipino heritage. Challenged his sense of misplaced identity...relationships with his family, his friends, and himself.
-The Debut is an independent feature-length film directed and co-written by first-time Filipino American filmmaker Gene Cajayon. It is one of the first feature films to take place within the Filipino American community, one of the largest Asian ethnic minorities in America. It is also the first Filipino American film to be released theatrically nationwide.
-Early Success
Prior to the film's theatrical release in 2001, the film was shown at various film festivals around the United States, including the Hawaii International Film Festival in November 2000. American film critic Roger Ebert, in attendance, was given a private screening of the film and gave his famous "thumbs up" approval.
-2000 HIFF Audience Award for Best Feature Film, beating out heavily favored Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
-Best Feature Film honors by the 2000 San Diego Asian Film Festival.
-The film had its World Premiere as the Opening Night Attraction of the 15th Annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film & Video Festival
-Theatrical Release
The Debut's crowd-pleasing success on the film festival circuit inspired the filmmakers to launch an ambitious theatrical self-distribution campaign. For 2 years, The Debut's grass roots promotional team (consisting of Cajayon, co-writer John Castro, associate producer Patricio Ginelsa, and a full-time staff of 5) traveled to 15 major cities across the United States and promoted the film directly to Asian Pacific American and mainstream communities. Utilizing aggressive grass roots promotional tactics, targeted advertising and traditional media coverage, The Debut eventually grossed $1.8 million at the box office and won the 2001 Ammy Award for Best Independent Feature Film.
The movie's extraordinary success in theaters led to a domestic and international distribution deal with Sony Pictures. Over 12 years after Cajayon first started work on The Debut, the film has now been released in theaters, DVD, home video, and television in over 50 countries worldwide. (Less)

She is best-known for her kiss-off songs, like 1997's "Bye Bye", 1999's "Lesson in Leavin'", and 2005's "My Give a Damn's Busted". Shes had 9 #1 singles, has been honored by The Country Music Association, The Academy of Country Music and The Grammy Awards and was the first female country artist to score three multiple-week #1 songs from the same album. Early years & rise to fame Of Italian heritage, Messina was raised in Holliston, Massachusetts. At age 16, Messina formed her own band, handling publicity, marketing and song selection. In her high school yearbook she wrote that she aspired to have a single out on country radio someday. At 19 she packed up all she could and drove to Nashville, Tennessee, with little money and no contacts in the music business. The feisty redhead was determined to make her dream come true. Soon after arriving, she met a struggling singer named Tim McGraw. The two became close friends. Messina struggled for the first couple of years in Nashville. She entered and won talent contests around town and took up odd jobs to make ends meet, including a stint as a bartender. She managed to get a regular gig on the local Nashville radio show "Live at Libby's" where she caught the attention of producer Byron Gallimore. With his help, Messina started making inroads into the Nashville music community. All looked up when she was signed with RCA records, but she was subsequently dropped from the label after a management shakeup. Meanwhile, her friend, McGraw, was having modest success on country radio, and she watched as his stardom began to take off. As McGraw's backstage guest during Fan Fair in the early 1990s, Messina approached an executive from McGraw's record label and joked they needed a redhead on their roster. Her boldness caught the attention of Curb Records, and not too long after, she was signed to a recording contract. She reports selecting what she wanted to be her first 10 singles from more than 1,000 songs. Current Country Music Career Early Country Music Success: 1996-1999 Messina's first success in the country music scene was in 1996 with her debut single "Heads Carolina, Tails California". The song made it all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart. Co-produced by McGraw and Gallimore, her first album quickly charted two Top 10 hits, but a number of poor business decisions nearly sank her career, placing her on the edge of bankruptcy. [2] It eventually went gold, even though it only hit No. 23 on the "Top Country Albums" chart that year. The second single, "You're Not In Kansas Anymore", broke the top 10 that fall. But after her impressive debut, Messina soon lost her radio airtime. Her singles, "You Wanna Make Something Of It" and "He'd Never Seen Julie Cry", did not fare as well. The album, like the singles, began sputtering. Soon her tour dates began drying up and money started getting tight. "Bye Bye" was released to radio in late 1997. The song was the first track from her second album I'm Alright. The song soared to No. 1 on the Billboard and Radio and Records charts in early 1998 for two weeks. "I'm Alright" was a top 10 album. History was made when her next two singles also hit No. 1: "I'm Alright" and "Stand Beside Me". Messina became the first woman in country music history to have three consecutive multi-week No. 1 songs from one album. In 1999, she was named Billboard's most-played female country artist. She also won the prestigious CMA Horizon Award and won the award for Top New Female Artist from the Academy of Country Music. Her kiss-off rendition of Dottie West's 1980 No. 1 hit song, "Lesson in Leavin'" was a major hit, spending nearly two months at No. 2 on Billboard's country chart, unable to unseat Lonestar's mega-hit "Amazed". "Lesson In Leavin'" became the No. 3 country song of 1999 on the Billboard charts (behind "Amazed" and Kenny Chesney's "How Forever Feels"). She also toured with country superstar George Strait. Messina finished out 1999 by releasing "Because You Love Me", a ballad showcasing her softer side. I'm Alright was certified double platinum and was a top five album. "Because You Love Me" became a top 10 hit, peaking at No. 8. Messina also was chosen to be the opening act for the Judds Reunion tour in 2000. Success in the New Millennium: 2000- present As Messina entered the new millennium, she released "That's The Way", the lead single from her latest album Burn. "That's The Way" spent four weeks at No. 1 on Billboard, and in August Burn was released. It debuted at No. 1 and went platinum. The title cut climbed to No. 2 on Billboard and crossed over to the adult contemporary chart. Messina also became engaged to her tour manager, Don Muzquiz. The third single off Burn was "Downtime", which peaked at No. 5. With steady album sales, Messina released another ballad, "Bring On The Rain" in 2002, a duet with longtime friend Tim McGraw. The song soared to No. 1 and became the second crossover song to make it on the pop charts. Messina embarked on her first headlining tour with the group Rascal Flatts as the opening act, sponsored by Jerzees and Slimfast. She also made appearances on Nash Bridges and Touched By An Angel. "Dare To Dream" was the last single released from Burn and was featured on the movie soundtrack for Driven. The single didn't fare as well as others, peaking at No. 23. In 2002, Messina released a Christmas album, A Joyful Noise. Messina continued working with McGraw and Byron Gallimore on her fourth studio album. The single "Was That My Life" was released to radio. The single struggled to climb the charts. When Messina and her co-producers turned in what was to be her next album, Curb Records opted to release a greatest-hits package instead. They replaced McGraw and Gallimore with other producers and had Messina continue working to put together songs to include on a new studio album to be released at a later date. Her Greatest Hits album was released in 2003 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. But the second single from the album, "I Wish", peaked at No. 15. 2003 ended with many of Messina's fans wondering when a new album would be released. They ended up having to wait all of 2004 as well. In late 2004, Messina revealed she was an alcoholic and had entered herself into a rehab program. In the meantime, her engagement to road manager Don Muzquiz was broken. The setback didn't hold Messina down. She attributed to her faith and family her will to keep going. And that's exactly what she did, she kept going. At the end of 2004 Messina's label released "My Give a Damn's Busted". The spunky, fiery redhead was back, as witnessed by the song's climb to the No. 1 spot for two weeks. The song was the first single from her long-awaited album Delicious Surprise, released in stores on April 26, 2005. The second single from the album was the title track, which peaked at No. 23. Messina's third single, "Not Going Down" didn't break the top twenty, peaking at a modest #28. Her newest single, "It's Too Late to Worry," was released on July 10, 2006, but only peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard charts. On January 2007, Jo Dee set to kick off the New Year with her first USO/Armed Forces Entertainment (AFE) Tour which visited Naples, Venice, and Vicenza in Italy. While on the five day tour, started on January 5, she performed some of her hits as well as songs from her latest certified Gold album Delicious Surprise. "It's an honor to be part of anything that supports our men and women in the military," said Jo Dee. "I believe that it is so important to show our appreciation and support for all that they do to protect and serve our country. I'm looking forward to a good time and some great shows." Jo Dee's newest single "Biker Chick", was the first single from her upcoming CD, "Unmistakable", that was originally set to hit stores on November 6, 2007. The single only peaked at 48. After being released for only 9 weeks "Biker Chick" was later dropped as a single by Curb Records. Curb also decided to shelf The CD "Unmistakable." It is unclear when it will be released. (Less)

Councillors have begun to question a ridiculous proposal to erect a monument that recognizes the fact Waterloo was recently presented an award for being the world's most intelligent city by the Intelligent Community Forum. Members of that non-profit think tank established the dubious honour to raise awareness about the role high-speed networks and technology play in achieving sustainable economies.
You'd think, with the forum's excess of technical expertise, members would know how to Google Waterloo to check how municipal leaders conducted city business since 2000.
Apparently not.
They seem to know diddly-squat about Waterloo's RIM Park fiasco where supposedly intelligent councillors and staff were taken for a ride that cost taxpayers an additional, unnecessary $33 million.
Despite RIM Park, the forum selected Waterloo in 2006 as one of seven finalists out of 420 world municipalities seeking the award. Fortunately, the city that later stuck its taxpayers with an additional $4 million bill for a RIM Park inquiry didn't win.
No matter. Second act of this farce came in 2007 when forum members gave the award to Waterloo, the city that followed up the RIM Park disaster with a $750,000 taxpayer buyout for the chief administrative officer who held office when the debacle happened.
As if that wasn't enough, the award went to a municipality that threw away another $40,000 hiring a headhunter company to find a replacement CAO only to hire and fire a recommended but unsuitable person. That bureaucrat then sued the city for wrongful dismissal and the lawsuit recently cost battered taxpayers more than $240,000 in legal fees. Adding insult to injury, our smartest city wasted $13,142 last year sending Mayor Brenda Halloran to Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan and New York in pursuit of the award. Participating in the same self-indulgent exercise, Coun. Mark Whaley spent at least $5,000 of taxpayer dollars tripping off twice to sunny Hawaii as part of the same intelligence-award scheme. To justify such a waste of money, councillors decided to erect a nine-metre (30-foot) tower that looks like a cross between a giant phallus and a Christmas tree.
This illuminated carrot would be planted in Heritage Green Park at King and William streets where council would provide the site while a construction company paid for the obelisk.
Fortunately, the scheme is scheduled to be reconsidered by council after councillors Karen Scian and Ian McLean reported they are getting an earful from the world's most intelligent constituents who think the idea is stupid, embarrassing and vain.
It's too bad the world's smartest councillors couldn't have displayed some real intelligence by using thousands squandered on the award to support a worthwhile local cause -- something like the English as a second language or job training programs for new Canadians that are currently being dismantled, or perhaps social support services and emergency food-hamper programs that will help hundreds of low-tech local workers who are losing their manufacturing jobs.
Finally, if this monumental display of arrogant twaddle isn't abandoned, I hope intelligent Waterloo voters note the names of those promoting such a pile of puffery and, come the next election, throw the mayor and appropriate councillors out of office."

Taylor. Mr. Taylor also built the 1903 engine which powered the world's first heavier-than-air flight on December 17, 2003 to the Wright's specifications. This 1910 engine was started on June 17, 2000 for the first time after being in storage for more than 80 years. At that time No. 20 was the only Wright artifact "doing work" and is considered a "National Treasure" by those associated with it.
Present at this start ... October 30, 2007 ... were ArthurF, SalG, AntonioQ, BobB and JimD. GregC, master "engine mechanician" was in charge of the operation. Ray, a long time, The Wright Experience, associate, can be seen looking on in the background. Those of us familiar with this engine and its importance to our aviation heritage are drawn to its sound like moths to a lamp. Note: Those present at a start up are asked to sign the engine's log. This engine powered aeroplanes as they accomplished many of aviation's firsts. It powered the flight when New York City was first filmed from the air and many other such activities too numerous to mention here. The large galvanized tank adjacent to the engine is there to provide water for engine cooling ... the aircraft radiator is not used for demonstrations. Suspended above the engine is a small gas tank used for demonstrations. The "fan" or "club" replaces the propeller and is reproduced here exactly like the one used by Mr. Taylor and the Brothers.

The full Arabic name of Morocco, Al-Mamlaka al-Maghribiya, translates to "The Western Kingdom". Al Maghrib (meaning "The West") is commonly used. For historical references, historians used to refer to Morocco as Al Maghrib al Aqşá ("The Farthest West"), disambiguating it from the historical region called the Maghreb. The name "Morocco" in many other languages originates from the name of the former capital, Marrakech.
Morocco, officially the Kingdom of Morocco (Arabic: المملكة المغربية), is a country in North Africa with a population of 33,241,259. It has a coast on the Atlantic Ocean that reaches past the Strait of Gibraltar into the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco has international borders with Algeria to the east, Spain to the north (a water border through the Strait and land borders with two small Spanish colonies, Ceuta and Melilla), and Mauritania to the south.[1]
Morocco is the only African country that is not currently a member of the African Union. However, it is a member of the Arab League, Arab Maghreb Union, Organization of the Islamic Conference, Mediterranean Dialogue group, and Group of 77, and is a major non-NATO ally of the United States.
Morocco is an ethnically diverse country with a rich culture and civilization. Through Moroccan history, Morocco hosted many people coming from East (Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Jews and Arabs), South (Sub-Saharan Africans) and North (Romans, Vandals, Andalusians (including Moors and Jews)). All those civilizations have had an impact on the social structure of Morocco. It conceived various forms of beliefs, from paganism, Judaism, and Christianity to Islam.
Each region possesses its own specificities, thus contributing to the national culture and to the legacy of civilization. Morocco has set among its top priorities the protection of its legacy and the preservation of its cultural identity.
Culturally speaking, Morocco has always been successful in combining its Berber, Jewish and Arabic cultural heritage with external influences such as the French and the Spanish and, during the last decades, the Anglo-American lifestyles.
Gradual political reforms in the 1990s resulted in the establishment of a bicameral legislature in 1997, and with the death of King Hassan II of Morocco in 1999, the more liberal-minded Crown Prince Sidi Mohammed, who assumed the title of Mohammed VI, took the throne. He has since enacted successive reforms to modernize Morocco, and the country has seen a marked improvement in its human rights record. One of the new king's first acts was to free some 8,000 political prisoners and reduce the sentences of another 30,000. He also established a commission to compensate families of missing political activists and others subjected to arbitrary detention. In September 2002, new legislative elections were held, and the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (Union Socialiste des Forces Populaires—USFP) led all other parties in the voting. International observers regarded the elections as free and fair, noting the lack of irregularities that had plagued the 1997 elections. Under Muhammad VI, Morocco has continued down a path toward economic, political, and social reform and modernization. In May 2003, in honor of the birth of a son and heir to the throne, the king ordered the release of 9,000 prisoners and the reduction of 38,000 sentences. Also in 2003, Berber-language instruction was introduced in primary schools, prior to introducing it at all educational levels. In 2004, the government implemented reforms of the family code improving the status of women—first proposed in 2000—despite the objections of traditionalists.[1]
In March 2000, women's groups organised demonstrations in Casablanca proposing reforms to the legal status of women in the country. 40,000 women attended, calling for a ban on polygamy and the introduction of civil divorce law (divorce being a purely religious procedure at that time). Although a counter-demonstration attracted half a million participants, the movement for change started in 2000 was influential on King Mohammed, and he enacted a new Mudawana, or family law, in early 2004, meeting some of the demands of women's rights activists.
In July 2002, a crisis broke with Spain over an uninhabited small island lying just less than 200 meters from the Moroccan coast, named Toura or Leila by Moroccans, and Isla Perejil by Spain. After mediation by the United States, Both Morocco and Spain agreed to return to the status quo by which the Island remains deserted and almost a no man's land.
Internationally, Morocco has maintained a moderate stance, with strong ties to the West. It was one of the first Arab and Islamic states to denounce the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States. In May 2003, Morocco itself was subjected to the more radical forces at work in the Arab world when Islamist suicide bombers simultaneously struck a series of sites in Casablanca, killing 45 and injuring more than 100 others. The Moroccan government responded with a crackdown against Islamist extremists, ultimately arresting several thousand, prosecuting 1,200, and sentencing about 900. Additional arrests followed in June 2004. That same month, the United States designated Morocco a major non-North Atlantic Treaty Organization ally in recognition of its efforts to thwart international terrorism. On January 1, 2006, a comprehensive bilateral free trade agreement between the United States and Morocco took effect.[1] The agreement had been signed in 2004 along with a similar agreement with the European Union, its main trade partner.
In 2005, demonstrations and riots in support of independence for Western Sahara broke out in Moroccan-controlled El-Aaiun. Criticism from groups such as Amnesty International, Freedom House and Human Rights Watch has resulted from perceived police abuse of demonstrators and independence advocates. The demonstrations are labeled the "Independence Intifada" by its participants and are supported by the Polisario Front. Sporadic unrest is still occurring in January 2007.
The Spanish enclave of Ifni in the south became part of the new Morocco in 1969, but other Spanish possessions in the north (Ceuta, Melilla and some small islands) remain under Madrid's control, with Morocco viewing them as occupied territory.
A defining theme of Moroccan history and foreign policy is the bitter struggle over Western Sahara. Moroccan claims to Western Sahara date to the 11th century. However, in August 1974, Spain formally acknowledged the 1966 United Nations (UN) resolution calling for a referendum on the future status of Western Sahara and requested that a plebiscite be conducted under UN supervision. A UN visiting mission reported in October 1975 that an overwhelming majority of the Saharan people desired independence. Morocco protested the proposed referendum and took its case to the International Court of Justice at The Hague, which ruled that despite historical "ties of allegiance" between Morocco and the tribes of Western Sahara, there was no legal justification for departing from the UN position on self-determination. Spain, meanwhile, had declared that even in the absence of a referendum, it intended to surrender political control of Western Sahara, and Spain, Morocco, and Mauritania convened a tripartite conference to resolve the territory's future. But Madrid also announced that it was opening independence talks with the Algerian-backed Saharan independence movement known as the Polisario Front.[1]
In early 1976, Spain ceded Western Sahara administration's to Morocco and Mauritania. Morocco assumed control over the northern two-thirds of the territory and conceded the remaining portion in the south to Mauritania. An assembly of Saharan tribal leaders duly acknowledged Moroccan sovereignty. However, buoyed by the increasing defection of the chiefs to its cause, the Polisario drew up a constitution and announced the formation of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). A new dimension was thereby added to the dispute because the liberation movement could now present its claims as a government-in-exile.[1]
Morocco eventually sent a large portion of its combat forces into Western Sahara to confront the Polisario's forces, which were relatively small but well-equipped, highly mobile, and resourceful, using Algerian bases for quick strikes against targets deep inside Morocco and Mauritania as well as for operations in Western Sahara. In August 1979, after suffering military losses, Mauritania renounced its claim to Western Sahara and signed a peace treaty with the Polisario. Morocco then annexed the entire territory and, in 1985, built a 2,500-kilometer sand berm around three-quarters of it. In 1988, Morocco and the Polisario Front finally agreed on a United Nations (UN) peace plan, and a cease-fire and settlement plan went into effect in 1991. Even though the UN Security Council created a peacekeeping force to implement a referendum on self-determination for Western Sahara, it has yet to be held, periodic negotiations have failed, and the status of the territory remains unresolved.[1]
More than any other issue since independence, the objective of securing Western Sahara had unified the Moroccan nation. Because of the firm stand the king had taken, it also enhanced his popularity in the country. But the war against the Polisario guerrillas put severe strains on the economy, and Morocco found itself increasingly isolated diplomatically. Successive governments showed little inclination to move seriously against pressing economic and social issues. As a result, popular discontent with social and economic conditions persisted. Political parties continued to proliferate but produced only a divided and weakly organized opposition or were suppressed. Through the force of his strong personality, the legacy of the monarchy, and the application of political repression, the king succeeded in asserting his authority and controlling the forces threatening the existing social order. Gradual political reforms in the 1990s culminated in the constitutional reform of 1996, which created a new bicameral legislature with expanded, although still limited, powers. Although reportedly marred by irregularities, elections for the Chamber of Representatives were held in 1997.[1]
The reign of Hassan II
Hassan II became King of Morocco on March 3, 1961. His rule would be marked by political unrest, and the ruthless government response earned the period the name "the years of lead". The new king took personal control of the government as prime minister and named a new cabinet. Aided by an advisory council, he drew up a new constitution, which was approved overwhelmingly in a December 1962 referendum. Under its provisions, the king remained the central figure in the executive branch of the government, but legislative power was vested in a bicameral parliament, and an independent judiciary was guaranteed. In May 1963, legislative elections took place for the first time, and the royalist coalition secured a small plurality of seats. However, following a period of political upheaval in June 1965, Hassan II assumed full legislative and executive powers under a "state of exception," which remained in effect until 1970. Subsequently, a reform constitution was approved, restoring limited parliamentary government, and new elections were held. However, dissent remained, revolving around complaints of widespread corruption and malfeasance in government. In July 1971 and again in August 1972, the regime was challenged by two attempted military coups. The atmosphere in the country remained tense.[1]
After neighbouring Algeria's 1962 independence from France, border skirmishes in the Tindouf area of south-western Algeria, escalated in 1963 into what is known as the Sand War. Morocco invaded to claim the areas for Greater Morocco, but the fighting stalemated within weeks, and Morocco was forced to retreat with no border adjustments. The border remained a contentious issue, but was later demarcated, and Morocco no longer makes any formals claim on Algerian territory.
Despite serious domestic turmoil, the patriotism engendered by Morocco's participation in the Middle East conflict and by the events in Western Sahara contributed to Hassan's popularity and strengthened his hand politically. The king had dispatched Moroccan troops to the Sinai front after the outbreak of Arab-Israeli War in October 1973. Although they arrived too late to engage in hostilities, the action won Morocco goodwill among other Arab states. Shortly thereafter, the attention of the government turned to the acquisition of Western Sahara from Spain, an issue on which all major domestic parties agreed.[1]
Arabs conquered the region in the 7th century, bringing their civilization and Islam, to which most of the Berbers converted. While part of the larger Islamic Empire, client states were formed such as the Kingdom of Nekor. Arab conquerors converted the indigenous Berber population to Islam, but Berber tribes retained their customary laws. The Arabs abhorred the Berbers as barbarians, while the Berbers often saw the Arabs as only an arrogant and brutal soldiery bent on collecting taxes. Once established as Muslims, the Berbers shaped Islam in their own image and embraced schismatic Muslim sects, which, in many cases, were simply folk religion barely disguised as Islam, as their way of breaking from Arab control.[1] The region soon broke away from the control of the distant Abbasid caliphs in Baghdad under Idris ibn Abdallah who founded the Idrisid Dynasty. Morocco became a centre of learning and a major power.
Morocco reached its height under a series of Berber dynasties, Queen Saida Zahira, that arose south of the Atlas Mountains and expanded their rule northwards, replacing the Arab Idrisids. The 11th and 12th centuries witnessed the founding of several great Berber dynasties led by religious reformers and each based on a tribal confederation that dominated the Maghrib (also seen as Maghreb; refers to North Africa west of Egypt) and Al-Andalus for more than 200 years. The Berber dynasties (Almoravids, Almohads, and Marinids) gave the Berber people some measure of collective identity and political unity under a native regime for the first time in their history, and they created the idea of an "imperial Maghrib" under Berber aegis that survived in some form from dynasty to dynasty. But ultimately each of the Berber dynasties proved to be a political failure because none managed to create an integrated society out of a social landscape dominated by tribes that prized their autonomy and individual identity. In 1559, the region fell to successive Arab tribes claiming descent from the Prophet Muhammad: first the Saadi Dynasty who ruled from 1511 to 1659 and then the Alaouites, who founded a dynasty that has remained in power since the 17th century.
The Republic of Bou Regreg (1627-1666) was a shortlived republic based in Rabat and Salé

This would profoundly impact his later life and his restless pursuit of championing his own heritage (Time Magazine, Dec. 31 2007 - Jan. 7th 2008). At the age of 10, Westerman was sent to the Wahpeton Boarding School, where he first met Dennis Banks of the American Indian Movement.
Westerman's film and television appearances include the role of the "Shaman" for Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's The Doors and as "Ten Bears" in Dances with Wolves.[1] Westerman debuted in Renegades in which he played "Red Crow" the Lakota Sioux father of Lou Diamond Phillips. In his last film, Westerman appeared as Standing Elk alongside his long-time friend Max Gail in the 2006 family film, Tillamook Treasure. He can be seen as well in the beginning of Hidalgo, as the Chief in Buffalo Bill's circus. His television roles have included playing "Uncle Ray" on Walker, Texas Ranger[1], "One Who Waits" on Northern Exposure and multiple appearances as "Albert Hosteen" on the X-Files. In September 2007, Westerman finished work for the film Swing Vote.[1]
Before entering films and television, Westerman had established a solid reputation as a country-western music singer. His recordings offer a probing analysis of European influences in Native American communities. In addition to several recordings of his own, Westerman has collaborated with Jackson Browne, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Harry Belafonte[1], Joni Mitchell, Kris Kristofferson, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Westerman toured with Sting in the 1990s to raise funds to preserve rain forests.[1]
He earned a degree in secondary education from Northern State University in South Dakota. Westerman also spent two years in the United States Marine Corps.[1]
Westerman was also a recognized political advocate for Native American causes, working at times with the American Indian Movement. In 2000, American Indian Expo named Westerman celebrity of the year.
From 2003-2007, Westerman appeared in a number of television advertisements for "Lakota" brand topical pain reliever, often wearing traditional Native dress.
Westerman died on December 13, 2007 at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles after an extended illness and complications from leukemia.[2][1] (Less)

This valley with a great natural, cultural and historical value is on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000. The history of the region and its vine-culture dates back to prehistoric times.
Wine growing has been important to the Wachau area for as long as people can remember. It dates back to the Celts who lived here in pre-Roman times.
