Set in the home of American GraffitiModesto, Californiathe film follows the adventures, exploits, and loves of seven high school seniors over the course of 24 hours. In that time, hearts are broken, lessons are learned, and lives are changed. Some characters endear themselves to us almost as soon as they appear. Academy-Award-winning director, Kieth Merrill, said of one character in the movie: "American Grace [needed to] be made just to put the character of Mongo on the screen." The local police may not be able to maintain order in town, but Mongo, the can—and will. One of his friends, Jim Kurtz, is an All-American football player who is both loyal to his friends and committed to his faith. Within 24 hours Jim must decide rather to accept a scholarship to UCLA or serve a mission for his Church. The answer doesn't come until the last possible moment. Another friend, Justin Hayes, is both the student body president and an amazingly gifted guitar player. Before the night is over, his life will hang in the balance as he defends another friend, Bridget Morris. Bridget is beautiful, fun, and foolish. She knows that Ray, the guy she's with, is a drug dealer, but she feels she can keep herself free from that part of his life. When Ray suddenly becomes violent, however, on a deserted canal bank, she knows she may have made a fatal mistake. At that same moment, another friend, Dave Arrington, meets a homeless man who has been beaten by a gang. Dave is on the verge of failing in school and has no plans for the rest of his life, but now, with no one else to turn to for help, he learns what it means to give himself to another. And with one remarkable act, he sees clearly what he must do to help his friends who are in trouble. Life is complicated, but with the help of friends we can get through it. During this one night in 1973, these friends learn how far they are willing to go to save one of their own. And in doing so, they learn that the price required may change their lives forever. This is a strong story. Of the script, Academy-Award-winning director Kieth Merrill said, "This is what producers wait for." And Richard Dutcher, writer-director of God's Army, said, "It's the best screenplay I've read in years—maybe the best that was ever sent to me." A film critic actually wrote an article about the screenplay, a rare move. Toward the end of his review he said: ". . . How good is the screenplay? Having read the spellbinding story, count me a believer." (Roger Hoskins, The Modesto Bee, 13 July 2001.) The movie itself was shot by Emmy-winner, Roland "Ozzie" Smith. Shown at only one film festival so far, it received strong reviews, with the Deseret Morning News, saying, "It scores high marks for entertainment."
