In this video, I ask him for the truth about how many Amtrak daily job commuters were forced off Amtrak's trains by the near-doubling of commuting fares since the beginning of 2005. Pennsylvania and Delaware commuters pay about $5,000 to $7,000 more to get to work now than they did three years ago. It is my belief and contention that the fare increase actually drove most of the commuters off the trains, and Amtrak probably gets less revenue from commuters now than it did before the huge increase in fares, which was phased in mostly during the 2006 fiscal year. In September, 2006, Alex Kummant, Amtrak's President, sent a poorly researched and error-filled letter to three concerned members of Congress in which he claimed the fare increase was justified, in part, because monthly pass sales had "only" dropped 19.8% on the Northeast Corridor (which is actually rather huge, if you ask me!!), and that revnue was up around 3% as a result, so the increase was justified. I got a copy of Mr. Kummant's letter, though, and found it to be amateurishly prepared and just plain full of errors. Mr. Kummant mis-counted the months from October through July for the purpose of analysis, thinking there were only 7 months involved, rather than 10. Some of his derived analytical numbers were based on this mis-counting of months. Though asked to explain the effects of the huge fare increase on commuters, he erroneously identified the Keystone Corridor in Pennsylvania as having been hit with the increase, when in fact the line had seen no change in fares at all, was heavily subsidized by the state of Pennsylvania, and had fare rates vastly lower than the Northeast Corridor. Some of his botched analysis was based on averaging in the high-growth Keystone Corridor with the high-loss Northeast Corridor, presenting aggregate numbers for the combined corridors, and claiming both were subject to the huge fare increases, when that was absolutely not the case. Though he could have analyzed pass sales numbers for the period after the fare increase took effect, he chose to use an aggregate number that combined five months of pass sales prior to the full fare increase taking effect, with the first five months after the fare increase hit. He also did not take into account at all the fact that many and possibly even most commuters still riding on Amtrak throughout 2006 purchased their passes in advance before the fare increase went into effect, making understanding the effects of the increase all the more difficult, absent more specific breakdowns of sales of passes at pre- and post-increase prices. All in all, it was one of the most badly botched letters of analysis I've ever seen in the business world, and would have justified the firing of whoever wrote it in many a real world company. But for all I know, Mr. Kummant perhaps never even read the letter, and just signed what an underling assigned to get Congress "off the scent" handed to him to sign. But that doesn't excuse the fact that he signed it and didn't even notice that he wasn't identifying the right corridors and wasn't even counting to ten right! In this video, I ask Mr. Kummant to come clean about the devastation of the commuters and send an amended letter (preferably with an apology for the botched analysis he sent in 2006) to Senator Specter, the only recipient of the original nonsensically-prepared letter who is still serving in Congress. If he'll just compare 2007 passes with 2005 passes, we'll learn the truth about how many were lost, and whether or not the railroad also lost money in the process. (Less)

In this video, Amtrak pretends that the hottest evening commuter train headed south out of New York City has no coach seats available... for about the whole next year! All they'll sell a Philadelphia rider is a business class ticket for $105. Even live ticket agents can't sell a coach ticket to Philly. But coach seats are available if you buy a ticket PAST Philadelphia. A coach ticket to Wilmington, DE, a few minutes past Philadelphia, is just $49! That's $56 less than the cheapest ticket they'll sell in advance to a Philadelphia rider!!! Amtrak actually commits two big sins of dishonesty and dishonor here. First, Amtrak lies about being sold out in coach. Then Amtrak compounds its sin by charging less for a seat for going farther -- LOTS LESS!!! Going to Washington on train 137 is actually $36 CHEAPER than going to Philadelphia. IMHO, this is absolutely, positively a case of giving the politicians who fund Amtrak a back door kickback. In the process, people in the Philly-NYC section of the Corridor get bumped off for the cheap Washington riders. Perhaps the most heavily subsidized Amtrak customers in America are our Washigton representatives. How else can you explain $69 for politicians to ride more than twice as far as people forced to pay $105 to get on the same train for a short hop? What's wrong with charging Washington riders MORE than Philadelphia riders? Even in business class, Washington is cheaper than Philly! Moreover, Washington politicians passed a 2005 law to force Amtrak to raise the fares for daily job commuters by about $5,000 to $7,000 a year, but only on the Northeast Corridor. This forced so many commuters off the trains that every single state along the Northeast Corridor from Maryland to Connecticut saw a loss of Amtrak riders from 2005 to 2006, making it easier to get those cheap tickets to and from Washington. At the same time, gas first hit $3 a gallon, and Amtrak's ridership grew by leaps and bounds elsewhere in the country. The excuse that politicians used to raise commuter fares $5,000 to $7,000 on the Corridor was that Amtrak needs to make more money so that it needs less subsidy money from Uncle Sam in order to operate -- the "good stewardship" argument. But so many people were driven off the trains that Amtrak actually lost more commuter money than it gained! The most subsidized passengers on the NEC are the ones from Washington who ride on the cheap in an upside down fare system. It's an American political disgrace hiding in plain sight.
