52nd Street's 'Something's Going (More) Widely acknowledged as one of the best jazz songs ever to come out of the UK and now seen as a jazz standard
(Check out the Will Downing version).
52nd Street's 'Something's Going On' could of been recorded in the 40s so natural was the production by jazz legend Lenny White and engineering by Alec Head.
52nd Street started life as a jazz funk band in 1981 and were influenced by the likes of Lenny White, Stanley Clarke, Roy Ayres, Brecker Brothers, George Benson, Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock and Billie Holliday. The move to Factory Records in 1982 opened doors and enabled the band to incorporate their jazz and funk education with the ever emerging sounds of electronic sequencing and hip hop beats. The band never throughout those years forgot their
jazz roots and even recorded a jazz song on their debut Virgin/MCA album titled 'Children of the Night'.
Something's Going On was cut live in New York with an all star guest line-up:
Michael Brecker on Tenor Sax, Lenny White on Acoustic Drums, Pete Levin on Organ and Orchestral arrangements.
Thanks to Gwarn Music we have access to priceless photos of those sessions which included Levin, White, Brecker and the band: Bowry Bass, Henry Guitar, Dennison Piano and Charlemagne Lead Vocals.
Brecker stated in a few interviews in the 80s that his performances on the 52nd Street sessions were some of his most memorable. Michael died recently but his memory lives on.
God bless
RIP Michael Brecker. (more) (less) (Less) Channel: youtube

David Bowie quoted from the song in his 1973 track "Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)". The song was covered jazz-style by Ray Brown, Jr. on the album Stand by Me. The lyrics of the song also make a brief appearance at the end of the song "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" by Genesis from their album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
George Benson's version of "On Broadway", from his 1978 album Weekend in L.A., was an even bigger hit than The Drifters' original, hitting #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and getting substantial adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio airplay ever since. It won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance. The song appeared in the films Big Business and American Beauty. George Benson's performance of the song was used during the opening credits of the 1979 film All That Jazz, which featured dancers on stage auditioning for a musical similar to A Chorus Line. Very short Video of Les Paul and John Denner at the Iridium 12/10/2007
You Never Know who will show up on Les Paul Mondays at Iridium
Les Paul , Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, five-time Grammy Award winner, pioneer of the electric guitar and inventor of numerous recording tech-niques, such as reverb and multi-track recording was born June 9, 1915 in Waukesha Wisconsin. As The Gibson Les Paul line of guitars is universally hailed as the best and is played by legendary musicians, Iridium has been the host to countless musicians and celebrities who pay homage to 'The Father Of The Electric Guitar'. Musicians such as, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Tony Bennett, Paul Schaeffer, Steve Miller, Brian Setzer, Joe Beck, Al Dimeola, George Benson and many others have 'jammed' with Les on Monday nights at Iridium. You never know who will show up at Iridium to jam and joke with Les and the band!
Les says his greatest God-given gifts are perfect pitch, a love for music with the ability to learn it quickly, and the curiosity and persistence of an inventor who wants to know 'how things tick'. His first professional job, as 'Red Hot Red', was as a guitarist and harmonica player when he was just thirteen. One fateful night while performing in front of an outdoor crowd, Les became frustrated that people farther back couldn't hear him. Les Paul created an electric guitar and amplification system out of a radio, the earpiece of a telephone and a needle from a family record player that he jammed into the fret board as a 'pickup'! Les?guitar and voice were now heard by all. However, the resulting vibration and resulting feedback had to be contained. Les experimented by stuffing clothes and plaster of paris in the guitar; he even went so far as attaching a string to a hinge placed at the end of a railroad track. The sound was perfect. When Les showed his mother his accomplishment she replied, 'You'll never see Gene carrying that thing around'. So he settled on using a 4x4 block of wood attached to an Epiphone neck. When the audience paid no attention to his playing because the instrument was too strange, he attaches two non-functional 'wings' to the 4x4 so it looked like a normal guitar. The fans loved the sound and the solid body electric guitar was born! In 1950, Les started his design of the Les Paul model for The Gibson Guitar Company, which has become the world's best selling line of electric guitars.

The first is an Epiphone Broadway elitist with a Lollar "low wind" Imperial neck humbucker and the second is a recently acquired Ibanez model 2471nt. I'm thinking the Ibanez will probably need a recrowning of the frets to sound its best. The pickup is a Bartolini floating humbucker. I'm thinking of replacing thisone witha KA Johnny Smith floater. Article V of the U.S. Constitution specifies the ratification process, and requires 3/4 of the States to ratify any amendment proposed by Congress. There were 48 States in the American Union in 1913, meaning that affirmative action of 36 states was required for ratification. In February, 1913, Secretary of State Philander Knox issued a proclamation claiming that 38 states had ratified the amendment. After Extensive research done in 1984 by Bill Benson, (a former Investigator with the Illinois Department of Revenue) he discovered that only 2 States had successfully ratified the 16th Amendment. Philander Knox commited FRAUD upon the American People to serve his Banking Cartel Masters at the Privately Owned Federal Reserve.
