After the arduous and challenging road trip the Lakers had just completed against four of the best teams in the Western Conference, a visit from the lowly Seattle SuperSonics couldn't have come at a better time - especially without a day off in-between.
Kobe Bryant scored 23 points, seven of his teammates also finished in double digits on Friday night, and Los Angeles remained on top of the Western Conference standings with a 130-105 rout of the club with the second-worst record in the NBA.
Luke Walton scored all of his 17 points in the fourth quarter to tie a season high, while Bryant, Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher and Ronny Turiaf all spent the final 12 minutes on the bench. Odom had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Every Lakers starter scored in double digits, and the team is 14-1 when that happens.
Los Angeles went 2-2 on a trip that began with losses to New Orleans and Houston and concluded with victories over Dallas and Utah - two teams that were a combined 58-8 at home before the Lakers arrived. The Lakers beat the Jazz 106-95 on Thursday.
"I didn't see any effects from last night's ballgame,'' Bryant said after the Lakers sent the Sonics to their 10th straight loss and completed a sweep of the four-game season series. "Everybody is in great condition, and this morning at the shootaround, everybody was energetic and ready to go. I think we've been coming out with great focus and energy.''
The Lakers never trailed in their sixth straight win over the Sonics. They shot 61 percent from the field, converted Seattle's 16 turnovers into 24 points, and finished with a season-high 36 assists on 51 field goals.
"We are sharing the ball, making sure everybody touches it and putting guys in positions where they can be successful,'' Turiaf said. "It's so much easier for us to score on other teams because they can't just focus on Kobe or Lamar.''
Center Pau Gasol, who sprained his left ankle during the opening game of the road trip, missed his fourth straight contest. Friday's signing of 33-year-old forward Ira Newble to a 10-day contract enabled coach Phil Jackson to dress 11 players and fortify a roster further handcuffed by lengthy injuries to Andrew Bynum, Trevor Ariza and Chris Mihm.
"I think we're the front-runners,'' said Jackson, who is two wins away from his 14th 50-win season as an NBA coach and his sixth with Los Angeles. "I mean, if we had a healthy roster, I'd be much more comfortable saying that. But at this point, given our schedule, I think we have a real good opportunity.''
The Lakers got 56 points from their bench. Jordan Farmar had 14 in 24 minutes. Sasha Vujacic had 13 in 15 minutes.
"My message to our young guards, Sasha and Jordan, is that we're investing these minutes in them the rest of the season so that they can give us this great boost of energy and surge that we get from them off the bench,'' Jackson said. "If pressure is going to take them out, we're going to have a problem in the playoffs. So we need to see them perform, regardless of what the competition is.''
Rookie Kevin Durant had 20 points for the Sonics, a year and three days after his Texas Longhorns were bounced from the NCAA tournament with an 87-68 loss to USC in the East Region. He averaged 19.8 points and shot 38.4 percent (28-for-73) in the four games against the Lakers - missing 20 of 26 shots against them in an overtime loss on Jan. 14 at Seattle.
"I need to continue to expand my game and work hard at practice and before practice to help this team out,'' said Durant, who has played in all but two of Seattle's 69 games. "All in all, I think I'm getting a little more efficient with my shots, learning how to get shots and improving on the defensive end.''
This is the first time in the franchise's 41-year history that the Sonics have had two double-digit losing streaks in the same season. They began their first season under coach P.J. Carlesimo with eight straight losses, then dropped club-record 14 in a row from Dec. 31 through Jan. 27.
Seattle (16-53) would have to win eight of its final 13 games to avoid matching the team's worst record ever, which was set during the inaugural 1967-68 season. The Sonics have lost eight straight on the road and 19 of the last 21 away from KeyArena. They have only one victory in their last 15 games overall, beating Minnesota in overtime on March 2. (Less)

SIDENOTE:
Kobe and Dirk both throw up airballs in the same game! Unusual!
Kobe Bryant took a pass in the lane and spun toward a defender, flicking the ball over his head once his back was toward the basket. The ball hit the glass, caromed off the rim and fell into the net.
Just like that, the Los Angeles Lakers were up by 25 points midway through the third quarter. And the momentum the Dallas Mavericks thought they'd built with five lopsided wins over lousy teams seemed silly.
Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavs ended up making things interesting all the way to the final buzzer, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome. The Lakers won 102-100 Tuesday night, ending a skid of three losses in four games and putting them back into a tie with Houston for the best record in the Western Conference.
"It's a big win for us,'' Bryant said. "We had to stop the bleeding. We got a big lead, but it wasn't the way we wanted to close out the game. But we got the win.''
Bryant scored only nine of his 29 points in the second half. He also jammed his hip. An injury to an MVP front-runner could be devastating considering this was Los Angeles' second straight game without Pau Gasol and before the game coach Phil Jackson said emerging center Andrew Bynum probably won't return until the playoffs.
"I'm good. I'm straight,'' Bryant said. "I jammed my hip into the socket. It hurt for a minute and then released. I'm fine.''
With Bryant slowed at the end, Vladimir Radmanovic stepped up, scoring 10 of his season-high 21 points in the final quarter. His spurt included three 3s, all of them while the Mavericks were challenging the biggest comeback in team history.
Dallas made only 12 shots in the first half and scored just 38 points. It was so bad that some fans booed and others chanted MVP for Bryant. Jessica Simpson, sitting in the front row with beau Tony Romo, was in jeopardy of being blamed for another loss by one of her hometown teams.
But the Mavs closed the third quarter on a 14-1 run, then opened the fourth with a 9-2 spurt. They pushed again at the end, with consecutive 3-pointers from Nowitzki making it 98-97 with 41 seconds left. A long 3 by Jason Terry got Dallas within 101-100 with 4.9 seconds to go.
Derek Fisher made one of two fouls shots after that, giving the Mavericks a chance to win it or take their chances in overtime - like when the teams met in Los Angeles two weeks before. Nowitzki nailed a 3 to tie it last time, but this time his shot went wide right. Part of the problem was a low inbounds pass from Josh Howard that cost the big German precious seconds.
"Still, I had a good look,'' he said.
Nowitzki had 35 points, 11 rebounds and a season-high five blocks, but the Mavericks' five-game winning streak was snapped. Dallas fell to 0-6 against teams with winning records since adding Jason Kidd.
Kidd had his worst game since arriving from New Jersey, with one point (0-for-3 shooting, including a missed 3-pointer in the final half-minute), seven assists and three rebounds in only 28 minutes. He was benched from 6:27 of the third to 5:51 of the fourth.
Nowitzki said Los Angeles' great shooting in the first half kept Kidd from being a factor, which knocked the whole team out of whack.
"It's hard to get out running when you have to take the ball inbounds every time,'' said Nowitzki, whose frustration about the first half was evident when he hurled the ball the length of the court after the buzzer.
Lamar Odom scored 17 points for Los Angeles and Ronny Turiaf had 17 points, 17 rebounds and lots of tenacious play.
Jackson was disappointed that his players let Dallas rally, especially since he warned them exactly what to avoid and they didn't listen.
"They were pretty thick-headed tonight,'' he said.
Terry and Howard scored 19 points for Dallas, which slipped to seventh in the West. With 24 losses, the Mavericks have the same amount as eighth-seeded Golden State, but lead the Warriors by three games in the win column.
The Mavericks can't let this loss linger as Boston comes to town Thursday night and San Antonio on Sunday, giving them two more chances to try beating a championship contender.
"If we come out and played focused basketball like we're capable of doing, we can beat anybody,'' Jerry Stackhouse said. "If not, we'll be hanging our heads down like tonight.'' (Less)

New Orleans' latest victory left everybody talking about Chris Paul -- except Paul himself. He seemed more in awe of Tyson Chandler.
Paul scored 27 points and had a hand in three clutch baskets in the final minutes, leading the Hornets to a 100-88 victory over the New York Knicks on Monday night.
Paul made two of those buckets himself and found Chandler for an alley-oop dunk on the other, part of the Hornets' 10-0 run to close the game.
"Tyson is one of the most athletic centers in the league," Paul said. "Nate Robinson was talking to me out there on the court and he was like, 'Wish I had a big guy who could go up to the rim like that.' It's amazing how much him doing that has changed my game. I take it for granted that when he's not in the game with me, it's like 'What am I going to do?'"
Maybe just win it by himself. It looked as if he could have while speeding by the Knicks for 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the second half.
"As I said before the game, he's great. He's just as good in person as he is when you watch him on tape," Knicks coach Isiah Thomas said. "I thought Nate in the first half did a good job in terms of applying pressure and trying to keep up with him, and then he got in foul trouble and I thought that took away some of his aggressiveness."
Chandler added 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Hornets, who sent the Knicks (18-42) to their seventh consecutive losing season. They did it by controlling the final minutes behind Paul, who finished with eight assists, five rebounds and three steals.
"That's what great players do," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "Either make a play for themselves or make a play for their teammates. He did a real good job of getting to the basket. And when he wasn't getting to the basket he was finding open guys."
The Hornets pulled within 1½ games of Southwest Division leader San Antonio, which is percentage points ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers for the best record in the Western Conference. New Orleans is third.
Jamal Crawford scored 20 points and Eddy Curry ended a monthlong slump with 19 for the Knicks, who played without starting forward Zach Randolph (bruised right foot).
Thomas gave more playing time than usual to the young players at the end of his bench: Wilson Chandler, Randolph Morris and Mardy Collins. But he made a curious substitution with 1:33 left and the Knicks in possession in the frontcourt trailing by four, sending Chandler in for Robinson, one of New York's best offensive players -- a move that brought immediate boos.
Robinson had 17 points and David Lee grabbed 16 rebounds.
The Hornets fell apart in the fourth quarter of a 101-84 loss in Washington on Sunday, but handled the closing minutes much better in this one. With New Orleans up 90-88, Paul made a floater with 1:46 remaining, then found Chandler for an alley-oop dunk about 40 seconds later, a play New Orleans had struggled to pull off on a couple of earlier tries.
Paul closed the decisive stretch by converting a three-point play with 43 seconds left, making it 97-88.
"Coach usually sits me the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and I was sitting over there telling him, 'Let me go back, let me go back,'" Paul said. "But he made me wait it out and at the end that's when we usually try to push the tempo a little bit more and get aggressive.
"We do a lot of pick-and-rolls and a lot of them you've got to choose your poison. Either you're going to let me drive or Tyson is going to go to the rim."
New Orleans (40-19) surpassed its win total from last season. David West finished with 19 points.
There were 19 lead changes in the first half, which ended in a 49-49 tie after the Knicks' ' Jared Jeffries just beat the buzzer with a fast-break dunk. Paul scored 14 points in the third quarter, helping New Orleans take a 75-73 lead. (Less)

Hornets coach Byron Scott called point guard Chris Paul a Hall of Famer in the making Monday night.
Paul said he wasn't ready for those credentials, but his teammate Tyson Chandler was quick to put him in the race for MVP.
Paul had game highs of 37 points and 13 assists in New Orleans' 108-97 win over the Chicago Bulls.
He made an open 3-pointer with 2:47 left in the fourth quarter to tie it 96-all. After a steal by Jannero Pargo on the next possession, Paul found Chandler for a thundering alley-oop dunk to give the Hornets their first lead since halftime.
"It was all Chris Paul,'' said Chandler, who finished with eight points. "The little man was all over the floor. It was incredible. It's one of the best performances I've seen from him yet. He, at least to me, made his bid (Monday night) to consider him the MVP.''
Paul's shooting touch kept the Hornets in the game as they trailed throughout almost the entire second half. He finished the game 15-for-21 from the floor. Paul also had three steals and only two turnovers.
Bonzi Wells, who scored 19 points, added two free throws and a dunk in the next two possessions to seal the Hornets' victory.
New Orleans outscored Chicago 33-13 in the fourth quarter.
Peja Stojakovic added 21 points for the Hornets, but made only six of 19 3-point attempts. Rookie Julian Wright added 14 points for New Orleans.
Ben Gordon came off the bench to score 31 points for Chicago, but he knew Paul deserved the kudos.
"He took the game over single-handedly,'' Gordon said. "Every basket he made, they needed it to win.''
While Gordon sank shots from around the perimeter, Drew Gooden did so from near the paint. He had 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Larry Hughes and Luol Deng each ended up with 16 points for Chicago.
The Bulls opened the second half on a 14-4 run capped by Hughes' 3-pointer from the corner to put Chicago up 64-55 with 7:37 remaining in the third quarter. The Bulls ended the quarter up 84-75.
"The third quarter we started out with a couple of turnovers and coach really got on us about that,'' Paul said. "We gave up 34 points. We knew if we were going to have a chance we'd have to be aggressive in the fourth.''
New Orleans ended the game on a 24-4 run in the final 7:01.
"That's two games in a row where we controlled the game for pretty much three quarters, and then somehow, something happens and again we get outscored by 20 points in the fourth quarter,'' Bulls interim coach Jim Boylan said. "It's tough.''
Paul's layup through traffic with 5.6 seconds left in the first half gave New Orleans a 51-50 lead. A tip-in by Gooden was at first allowed as time expired, but was overturned after video review.
It was the last time the Hornets held a lead until Paul's dominance in the final 12 minutes.
"I usually never start the fourth quarter, but I went up to coach and said, 'Coach, let me stay,''' Paul said. "Some games he does it and some games he doesn't. Being down nine or 11 going into the fourth, that for our team to have a chance that I needed to be out there.'' (Less)

Chris Paul had 25 points, 15 assists and three steals to help the Hornets end a three-game losing streak with a 120-103 victory over Phoenix on Wednesday night.
"Enough is enough," Paul said. "We were on a losing streak and we came out with a different mentality, but we've got to come out with that mentality every night."
It was the second time this season the Hornets snapped a three-game skid with a victory over Phoenix, which New Orleans has beaten in all four meetings this season.
"We match up with them pretty well," said Hornets forward David West, who scored 27 points. "C.P. and our guards have an advantage over their guards with their speed and ability to get up and down the floor. ... It just happens that Phoenix is one of those teams that we feel confident against."
Reserve guard Jannero Pargo scored 22 and Peja Stojakovic 17 for New Orleans, which shot 53 percent in avoiding its first four-game losing streak this season.
The Suns continued to struggle since trading Shawn Marion for Shaquille O'Neal, but they couldn't blame their third loss in five games solely on the veteran 7-foot-1 center, who had 15 points and seven rebounds.
"We are still learning what we have to do to win games. We'll be fine," O'Neal said. "We just caught a team that was called out by their coach and they played very well."
Phoenix fell apart defensively in the second half in the face of the Hornets' combination of up-tempo offense and good perimeter shooting. The Hornets were 8-of-15 from 3-point range while outscoring Phoenix 16-12 on the fastbreak and 40-36 inside.
"In the third quarter they just didn't miss or we couldn't guard, one of the other," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I don't think anybody has an answer for (Paul), but it was the other guys who killed us. ... Chris is going to get his and there's nothing anyone is going to do about it. It's the other guys ... like David West and Stojakovic."
Or Hornets center Tyson Chandler, who hadn't notched a double-double in his previous four outings. He awoke from that slump with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Even when matched with the bigger, stronger O'Neal, Chandler willed his way inside for follow-up dunks on teammates' misses and threw down several alley-oop jams.
"I don't feel like I took a beating at all. I feel like I was dishing out the punishment," Chandler said, only half-joking. "It was great win for us. I felt like we had great team defense tonight. We played with great chemistry out there."
Amare Stoudemire led Phoenix with 32 points and 14 rebounds. Leandro Barbosa scored 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers, Raja Bell had 14 points and Steve Nash 13 assists.
New Orleans shot nearly 70 percent in the third quarter and opened a 20-point lead. West hit a jump hook to start it off, then Paul hit a jumper and a 3 before feeding Chandler on the first of two alley-oop dunks in the period.
Morris Peterson, who finished with 11 points, hit all four of his shots in the quarter, including a 3-pointer. Stojakovic closed out the period with a leaner off the glass as he was fouled, putting New Orleans ahead 97-77 heading into the final period.
Stoudemire hit a pair of straightaway jumpers to open the fourth quarter, but Pargo responded with his third 3-pointer, and New Orleans maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way.
Superb 3-point shooting helped the Suns take an early eight-point lead as Barbosa's first three shots were 3s. Bell, Stoudemire and Linton Johnson all made one as well, as Phoenix started 6-of-7 from long distance.
The Hornets came back when Pargo, who had 16 points in the half, and Stojakovic each hit a pair of 3s in the second quarter. The last by Stojakovic gave the Hornets a 53-51 lead.
Paul later fed Chandler on a fast break for a soaring tomahawk jam that energized the sellout crowd, and the Hornets led 59-55 at halftime. (Less)

The Denver Nuggets were just encouraged to see a uniform draping Nene's beefy body again, and that great smile splashed across his face once more. The big Brazilian forward played the final 77 seconds of the Nuggets' 118-105 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night, marking his return to the court 2 1/2 months after surgery to remove a malignant testicular tumor. "Everybody was excited to see Nene back out there, just to see him back in his uniform, seeing him smile again after the stuff he's been through,'' said Carmelo Anthony, who scored 32 points and keyed the decisive run in the Nuggets' fourth straight win. Nene had been out since Jan. 11, and it's been just over a month since he underwent chemotherapy. In the locker room afterward, Nene never stopped smiling. He said he's still full of nerves, still absent enough stamina but certainly not lacking any strength. "I survived, I'm still here,'' he said. "I'm a new man, stronger than ever, I just say, 'Thank you, everybody.''' Allen Iverson added 31 points for the Nuggets, who are a half-game behind Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot, and one game behind the Mavericks. The Warriors visit the Pepsi Center on Saturday night for another big matchup. "That game's bigger than this game,'' suggested Anthony. But this game will long be remembered, too. When Nene stripped off his warmups and finally entered the game with 1:17 left, he was given a rousing standing ovation and teammate Kenyon Martin embraced him in a bear hug. "George Karl said, 'Go ahead, enjoy your party,'' Nene said. "It's a special moment in my life.'' Nene had hoped to play about 5 minutes, but those aspirations were dashed when the Nuggets fell behind by 15 points early on. Besides, it's not as though the Nuggets were looking for a major contribution or even an emotional lift. "It's not about how he plays,'' coach George Karl, a fellow cancer survivor, said before tip-off. "We're just happy he's back and we're going to celebrate his health, we're going to celebrate his coming off of major cancer surgery, and we're just going to celebrate. This has nothing to do with basketball. We're just happy he's with us.'' Iverson said this was a night he'll remember forever. "He's a teammate, and he's somebody we care about and we want around, but life is so much bigger than basketball,'' Iverson said. "When it happened to him, it put it more in perspective for me that it's not just about this game, it's about life. It was just a good feeling and I was happy to be a part of it.'' Karl said he wanted to cry when Nene got into the game. "It's worthy of tears,'' Karl said. "To see him come back, he's a hell of a person and to help him through this, if we can help him play this year, it will be a great story, it'll be a great feeling, it will be a great building block for the character and chemistry of our team.'' Anthony also chipped in 10 boards and eight assists, helping Denver overcame a 30-point night by Josh Howard and 19 points and 15 assists from Jason Kidd. The Mavericks are 10-9 since acquiring Kidd from New Jersey, but none of the wins was against teams with winning records. Six of their final 10 games are against teams above .500, including two against Golden State. Dallas fell to 1-1 since losing MVP Dirk Nowitzki indefinitely with knee and ankle injuries. But the Mavs controlled the tempo for much of the game. Kidd was left unguarded on the left elbow and swished a 3-pointer in the third quarter to give the Mavericks a 79-71 lead. The Nuggets responded with an 18-2 run, with Anthony scoring half of the points. His breakaway slam dunk gave Denver its first lead since the opening minutes. Anthony sank four free throws with 3:17 left in the third quarter for an 86-81 lead after Dallas coach Avery Johnson and Howard received technicals for arguing a personal foul on Howard. "Geez, I'm the only guy in the league that gets a technical by saying one word,'' Johnson complained. "It wasn't even a bad word. I was asking for a clarification. They have to get some tougher skin.'' The Nuggets built their lead to 94-86 after three quarters and weren't threatened again. Howard surpassed his scoring average of 19.6 points with a 22-point first half, leading Dallas to a 70-60 lead at the break. But without Nowitzki, the Mavericks couldn't keep repelling Denver's runs. "I don't know if there was a void. Guys stepped up,'' Kidd said. "We just couldn't keep them off the boards and didn't take care of the ball in that second half.'' (Less)

But we got the win.'' Bryant scored only nine of his 29 points in the second half. I'm fine.'' With Bryant slowed at the end, Vladimir Radmanovic stepped up, scoring 10 of his season-high 21 points in the final quarter.

OS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant abandoned his one-man show, got his teammates involved and the Los Angeles Lakers prevailed in a shooting contest.
Bryant scored six of his 26 points in overtime and the Lakers beat the Washington Wizards 126-120 Sunday night to snap a two-game losing skid and move within a game of the Western Conference lead.
"We're doing this without two starters," Bryant said. "It's been an adjustment period. I think guys have adjusted well. With all the injuries, we're still one game behind the top seed in the Western Conference. You got to like our spot."
Sasha Vujacic hit six 3-pointers while scoring 20 points, Luke Walton added 19, Vladimir Radmanovic 18 and Lamar Odom had 10 points and 13 rebounds as the Lakers notched their 50th victory for the 29th time in franchise history.
"We feel like we are going to have to win 57 or something like that if we want to finish at the top of this heap," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.
Rookie Nick Young led the Wizards with a career-high 27 points playing in his hometown and DeShawn Stevenson matched him, including a career-high eight 3-pointers. Caron Butler had 17 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for his third career triple-double, and Antawn Jamison added 17.
"It was good to see Mom, Dad, family and friends," said Young, who starred at Southern California. "That kind of got me going a little bit. It felt like SC days out there."
For the first time since the 3-point line was instituted before the 1979-80 season, both teams shot better than 50 percent from 3-point range and under 50 percent from the floor.
"We did everything we wanted to do. We stopped penetration, closed out to the shooters, got a hand in their face and they shot 56 percent from 3s. You kind of got to live with that," Bryant said. "Teams that go 17-for-30 on contested 3-point shots, I mean there were a couple that were uncontested, but for the most part we had hands on their faces, hands on their arms and they were knocking them down."
Trailing by a point with a minute left in overtime, the Lakers went to Bryant, who two days ago scored 53 in a 114-111 loss to Memphis.
He hit three consecutive free throws to put them ahead for good after the Lakers blew a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter. The Wizards were scoreless over the final 1:18.
Against the Grizzlies, Bryant had 34 at halftime; this time he had five at the break. He took 37 of the Lakers' 104 shots against the Grizzlies; he had 24 of their 87 Sunday. He had one assist Friday and 13 Sunday.
The Wizards outscored the Lakers 7-3 to open overtime, capped by Stevenson's driving reverse layup for a 118-114 lead.
"It's just funny that a defensive guard and a rookie guard makes the big scoring plays and our veterans were struggling a little bit," Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said.
Derek Fisher, who finished with 17 points, hit a 3-pointer to draw the Lakers within one. Butler missed, grabbed the rebound and fed Young on the wing, who scored for a 120-117 lead.
Fisher stepped away from a flying Young in the right corner and scored, again drawing the Lakers within one with 1:02 left. Pressured on a drive under the basket that went nowhere, Young passed the ball out of bounds. Stevenson fouled Bryant, who made both, giving the Lakers their first lead, 121-120, since early in overtime.
Young missed a jumper with 18 seconds left and Jamison was forced to foul Bryant, who made the first accompanied by "MVP!" chants. He missed the second, but Vujacic grabbed the rebound, got fouled and made both with 10 seconds left.
Butler missed a 3-pointer with five seconds to go and Walton's fastbreak dunk ended the game.
"It was a heartbreaker," Young said. "It would have been good to come home and get a win. But that's Kobe and they are a great team. Derek Fisher hit some big shots."
Bryant was fouled by Stevenson while shooting and sank both for a 111-108 lead with 33 seconds to go in regulation. After a timeout, Butler's 3-pointer from left of the key tied the game at 111 with 10 seconds left.
Bryant dribbled the ball the length of the court before dishing to Fisher, who missed the potential winning 3-pointer from the right corner as regulation expired. (Less)
