The attempted record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records (More) The Mercedes-Benz Museum is now officially home to the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world". The attempted record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records representative Olaf Kuchenbecker. The 34.4-metre-high artificial tornado serves to eliminate smoke from the museum in the event of a fire. "We are delighted that the Mercedes-Benz Museum is now also featured in the Guinness Book of Records," said Michael Bock, manager of Mercedes-Benz Museum GmbH. "By successfully achieving the world record as 'strongest artificially generated tornado in the world', the Mercedes-Benz Museum has once again underlined its outstanding position in the world of museums also in terms of architecture."
The architecture of the Mercedes-Benz Museum placed particular demands on construction planners, architects and engineers with regard to smoke elimination. The provisions of the approving authority and fire protection regulations require all areas outside the fire level to be smoke-free in the event of smoke emission. However, due to the open-plan structure of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the various exhibition areas are connected to each other without any fire zones via an interior courtyard and ramps. From the perspective of smoke elimination this presented a challenging task that could not be implemented through conventional fluid mechanics.
It was necessary to take a new approach, and so a globally unique smoke elimination system was developed especially for the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building.
This procedure uses the principle of the tornado force, which has a devastating effect under natural conditions, to create a controlled life-saving form of fluid mechanics that opens up new architectural possibilities.
The Mercedes-Benz Museum with its unique smoke elimination system was selected from among some 800 applications that are submitted each week to the Guinness Book of Records. With 110 million copies in circulation, the Guinness Book of Records has been one of the world's most successful reference works since the 1950s, and is now distributed in 20 languages and 100 countries. Since 2006, the German version of the Guinness Book of Records has been published by Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG.

2008-04-27 20:51:58 Description: The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas, at 15 East 97th Street, was built in 1902 and soon became an American battleground for conflicts between czarist and Soviet Russians. Now, a decade (More) The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas, at 15 East 97th Street, was built in 1902 and soon became an American battleground for conflicts between czarist and Soviet Russians. Now, a decade after the fall of communism and the end of the officially atheistic Soviet state, a new bishop, fresh from Moscow, is planning renovations and modernization.
The Church of St. Nicholas was established in the early 1890's in rented rooms on lower second avenue to serve an increasing number of russian immigrants. By 1899 it had had 300 members, and a movement began to build a new church. The congregation chose an inexpensive uptown location at 97th street off fifth avenue, in an area that was beginning to emerge as a neighborhood of modest flats.
Czar Nicholas II made the first donation to the building fund, 5,000 rubles, then about $2,500. in may 1901, when the cornerstone was laid, it bore a silver plaque praising him. "long live the Emperor of Russia and the President of the United States," proclaimed the rev. Alexander Hotovitsky, the minister.
The building was designed according to the characteristic russian model, with seven domes above a dark red brick facade trimmed with limestone and glazed tile in green, blue and yellow. The curving ribs of the domes were of gilt bronze, contrasting with the green painted galvanized iron surface. The building was designed by John Bergesen, who was often referred to as being of russian birth. but on census returns he listed his birthplace sometimes as Finland and other times as Sweden.
In 1904, the crowd outside the church was so huge when bishop Tikhon dedicated a new iconostasis, or altar screen, that the police had to hold them back. At that time a New York Times reporter marveled at the exotic, incense-laden atmosphere: "the air was heavy with perfume, and the multitude of sacred candles shedding a dim light throughout the church ombined with the solemn chant of choristers and the psalm singers to produce a quaint splendor seldom surpassed in this city." But Montgomery Schuyler, the critic for the architectural record, was not similarly moved, calling the church building "ugly and freakish."
The next year the headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church moved from San Francisco to New York, and St. Nicholas became the Cathedral of the American Church. That same year, amid rising civil strife. Grand Duke Sergius was assassinated by a bomb in Moscow, rumors of a bombing plot against the cathedral were circulating, and the Czar granted some powers to the duma, a new legislative body.
Czar Nicholas abdicated in 1917 and was murdered the next year. After the communists came to power they began remaking the russian church to fit the goals of an atheist state. Priests and bishops were persecuted and fled Russia, replaced by clerics who were willing to accommodate themselves to the party line. Early in 1920 bolshevik sympathizers disrupted a communion service at St. Nicholas, but were thrown out by the faithful.
In 1923 the rev. John. F. Kedrovsky was sent by Moscow to take over the Cathedral of St. Nicholas - and the $3 million in property controlled by the Russian Orthodox Church. Newspaper accounts indicate that the congregation was generally anti-communist. Father Kedrovsky was carried out of the building and down the steps onto 97th street, kicking and screaming. He later took his case to court.
The police helped the communists enter the rectory in July 1925 and take over St. Nicholas, but it was reoccupied by the anti-communists in August, and pictures of the late Czar were still being sold in the church in December of that year. The police came back in April 1926 when the new nork state appellate court ruled in favor of the communists, and father Kedrovsky was installed again - although he had to send to hartford for robes, because those in the church had been removed by the losing faction.
In the following decades St. Nicholas had an uneasy time as the official church of an officially atheistic country that was to many americans the enemy of the United States.
In the 1920's, a non-Communist church, the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, was set up; it now has headquarters in the old George F. Baker mansion at 75 East 93rd Street. (Less)

The Exposition Universelle of 1900 was a world's fair held in Paris, France, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The style that was universally present in the Exposition was Art Nouveau.
Exposition Universelle viewMore than 50 million people attended the exhibition (a world record at the time), yet it still failed to turn a profit, costing the French government 2,000,000 Francs. The fair included more than 76,000 exhibitors and covered 1.12 square kilometres of Paris.
The Exposition Universelle was where talking films and escalators were first publicized, and where Campbell's Soup was awarded a gold medal (an image of which still appears on its label). At the Exposition Rudolf Diesel exhibited his diesel engine, running on peanut oil. Brief films of excerpts from opera and ballet are apparently the first films exhibited publicly with projection of both image and recorded sound. The Exposition also featured many panoramic paintings and extensions of the panorama technique, such as the Cinéorama, Mareorama, and Trans-Siberian Railway Panorama.
Alexandre III bridgeThe exhibition lasted from 14 April until 10 November 1900. A special committee, led by Gustave Eiffel, awarded a gold medal to Lavr Proskuryakov's project for the Yenisei Bridge in Krasnoyarsk.
A number of Paris' most noted structures were built for the Exposition, including the Gare de Lyon, the Gare d'Orsay (now the Musée d'Orsay), the Pont Alexandre III, the Grand Palais, La Ruche, and the Petit Palais. The first line of the Paris Metro also began operation to co-incide with the Exposition. Although completed in just 18 months, it was nevertheless slightly late, taking its first paying passengers to the Ancien Palais du Trocadéro site on 19 July 1900.
Part of the Exposition was the Second Olympic Games, which were spread over five months. So unnoted were these games that many athletes died unaware that they had been Olympians. The games also marked the first participation by female athletes and, in such sports as tennis, football (soccer), polo, rowing and tug of war, teams were multinational.
A Human Zoo was present at the exposition.
The Finnish Pavilion at the Exposition was designed by the architectural firm of Gesellius, Lindgren, and Saarinen. It was published in Dekorative Kunst 3 (1900) (Less)

dated to 300 BC, was discovered on this territory of an ancient religious centre in 1982. The interior, consisting of three chambers, includes splendid decoration
depicting 10 female figures -- caryatids and a polychrome on the walls. Extensive examinations of the site have focused on the ancient building and art tech
niques, assessment of the tomb's condition and the selection of the optimum conservation methods. Selected results of these examinations are presented. The
main preservation measure was construction of a permanent air-conditioned protective building over the tomb, securing a controlled environment. The 'minimal intervention' approach was used in the handling the interior decorations, restricted to cleaning operations and reintegration of the broken fragments. Due
to this 'passive' approach the tomb has retained its authentic appearance. So far, the results are positive for
the more than twenty years that have passed since the tomb was found.
The Sveshtary Tomb in Sboryanovo Reserve
The Sboryanovo Reserve is situated in the north-east of Bulgaria. On this territory there is an ancient religious centre and many Thracian hills with graves and
tombs which were organised into a necropolis in the Hellenic period, 300
BC. In this place, the Thracian Tomb
has been the most sensational discovery of the last 20 years The tomb is situated in the south east part of the Guinina Mogila. Its outer dimensions are 767cm x 667cm. It consists of a passage (dromos)leading to a building. In the building there are three
chambers: an anteroom, a side chamber and a centraltomb chamber). The construction was builtof limestone blocks. Three types of limestone were used: a hard, monolithic variety as block stone for
structural building work, a medium hard stone for the inner walls and architectural details and reliefs, and a soft, lighter variety for construction of an upper part of
the tomb. The interior includes splendid decoration depicting 10 female figures -- caryatids (Figure3). The central
chamber is decorated with a polychrome, a drawn scene on the arched part of the north-west wall. The tomb is a cultural monument which has been placed under the protection of UNESCO.
Condition at the time of discovery in 1982
The Thracian Tomb has survived under the hill mound for 2,300 years. Over the course of time, the fluctuations in temperature and humidity were very slight,
and degradation progressed very slowly. Microbiological processes were similarly impeded. The Thracian Tomb has existed in a state of self-conservation.
The charcoal drawing still exists in the central cham-ber of the tomb. Furthermore, the traces of a polychrome layer and the stone carvings are generally in
good condition. Large areas of the building havebeen naturally strengthened through a process of secondary calcite precipitation. Of course, tectonic movements and flaws in the architectural construction have caused substantial damage. There are many cracks, and chipped or misplaced fragments of
the stone blocks. Tree roots have caused some structural disruption by penetrating joints in the masonry and weak points in the stone surface. There are also
traces of human destruction: the tomb was robbed and the central element in the tomb chamber, the naiskos, was broken into 38 fragments. Fortunately, this element can be restored.Despite the slow progress of the degradation process, the moisture in the air and on the walls in conjunction with temperature changes has created an interesting development of salt efflorescence -- from fine nets to
petrified covers. The salt efflorescence consists ofcalcium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate and magne-sium carbonate. Obviously, the carbonates have
been extracted by water from the construction material of the tomb, and the presence of compounds which could have been leached from the soil was negligible. The carbonate solution was transferred to
the pores or fissures of stone where, under dryingconditions, the water evaporated and the salts were deposited on the surface of the masonry and within the pores and cracks. The salt composition varies
from place to place, depending on local conditions of drying. The re-precipitation of calcium carbonate has
led to consolidation of stone blocks and local fossilization of the polychrome. The water solution penetrating the stone has also coloured the material yellow-brown. An interesting observation is the presence of calcium bicarbonate as a whitish layer on thesurface of the soft limestone, well visible under UVlight.
The polychrome layer has undergone erosion tovarying degrees, from total destruction to powdering and falling apart of the pigments. Well-preserved ar-eas are also present. When the tomb was relieved of the hill mound, dramatic consequences were expected concerning the preservation of the find. The humidity of the air inside
was very high and substantial variations in temperature and humidity were observed. These might have become causes for serious destructive processes via
microbiological attack and overdrying. Therefore, it
was very important to undertake measures for the preservation and adaptation of the tomb to this modified and potentially harmful environment, including
investigation from every point of view, collecting of
information for necessary diagnoses, project devel-
opment and decision-making for the future.TThhrreeee ssttrreeaammss ooff iinnvveessttiiggaattiioonn
After the discovery of the tomb near Sveshtary, a large
circle of specialists became involved in the investiga-
tions. There were three streams of investigation:
-- Examination of the ancient building and art tech-
niques. Composition. Stylistic features.
-- Examination of the tomb's condition. Destructive
processes.
-- Investigation into the selection of the optimum
conservation methods -- pros and cons in applying
selected conservation materials.
This report will show the results of our team's inves-
tigations. They have helped us to interpret other
data, document phenomena and reach a higher level of assurance in developing the aims of the conservation project.

The Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir is an internationally renowned World Music ensemble that blends traditional six-part a capella repertoire with modern arrangements. It is most recognized under the recording name Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. First created in Bulgaria in 1952 by Philip Koutev, "the father of Bulgarian concert folk music," the choir is now under the direction of Dora Hristova. Koutev also created and conducted the Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic in 1951.
Singers are chosen from country villages for the beauty and openness of their voices, and they undergo extensive training in the unique centuries' old singing style. Influenced by Bulgaria's Thracian, Ottoman and Byzantine history, their music is striking in its use of diaphonic singing and distinctive timbre, as well as its modal scales and dissonant harmonies (abundant second, seventh, and ninth intervals).
Though the choir became widely known when the trend-setting English alternative record label 4AD released a pair of anthology albums in 1986 and 1988 with the now famous title Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, their recordings date as far back as 1957. The first pressing of the Voix Bulgares album was the result of fifteen years of work by Swiss ethnomusicologist and producer Marcel Cellier and was originally released in 1975 on his small Discs Cellier label. Ivo Watts-Russell (founder of 4AD) was introduced to the choir from a third or fourth generation audio cassette lent to him by Peter Murphy, singer from the band Bauhaus. He became thoroughly entranced by the music, and tracked down and licensed the recordings from Cellier. The group has since performed extensively around the world to wide acclaim and were honored with a Grammy Award in 1989 for their second album.
Three prominent soloists of the group have also performed together as the Trio Bulgarka, notably on the Kate Bush albums The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.
In 1992, the choir divided into two: one for radio, one for television. Bulgarian television signed a contract with the one half, which is the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir; the other half organised itself as a collective, and now performs as The Bulgarian Voices ANGELITE (more) (Less)

"Blackout" was conceived as an installation supplement to Sound Mirror images by photographer Julian Hills (taken in January 1996) which appear on the sleeve of the Disinformation "Antiphony" double remix CD, published by the record company Ash International in 1997 [1] [2].
Barry Hale's Sound Mirror video has been shown at NTT ICC (Tokyo), The Royal College of Art (London), Galerie fur Zeitgenossische Kunst (Leipzig), The Art House (London), Schirn Kunsthalle (Frankfurt), The Dom (Moscow), and exhibited at The ICA (London), CCCB (Barcelona), The Mac (Birmingham), Now 1999 (Nottingham), Waygood Gallery (Newcastle), Quay Arts (Isle of Wight), Wrexham Arts Centre, South Hill Park (Bracknell), Saltburn Artists Projects, Q Gallery (Derby), Study Gallery of Modern Art (Poole), Event Gallery (London), Ginza Art Lab (Tokyo) and The Latvian National Museum of Art.
Documentation of the Disinformation project appears in The Wire magazine in 1997; in "100% Pylon" by Angus Carlyle, pp. 68-83, "Themepark" 2, 2000; in The Hayward Gallery "Sonic Boom" catalogue, pp. 26-29, 2000; the "Sound Art - Sound as Media" catalogue, pp. 70-73, NTT ICC Tokyo 2000; "The Analysis of Beauty" exhibition catalogue 2003; the "Waves" catalogue, pp. 48-49, Latvian National Museum of Art 2006, and others. The "Antiphony Architectural Supplement" appears in Sound Projector, issue 6, pp. 57-64, 1999.
The long version of this film runs just short of 20 minutes, and (even in 2008) remains one of the most comprehensive visual surveys of these extraordinary structures ever conducted. One element notable by its absence from this edit is the long (and beautiful) abstract sequence which Barry created for the middle of the full version of this film.
This video is virtually identical to later films by Tacita Dean and Lise Autogena, etc [3], and if there is any confusion about the similarity between the original Sound Mirrors film and Tacita Dean's (much later) film "Sound Mirrors", readers should refer to art historian and curator Anda Rottenberg's letter to Art Monthly [4] about the similarity between artist Katarzyna Kozyra's film "Bath House" - of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest, and Tacita Dean's (much later) film "Gellert" - also of people chatting in a bath house in Budapest! What's most surprising is the fact that Tacita Dean's "Sound Mirrors" was commissioned (by The Public Art Development Trust) AFTER these "methods" had been exposed in the art press.
In a virtuoso display of institutional gullibility, a plan by artist Lise Autogena to build 2 new communicating sound mirrors received funding from The Royal Society of Arts "Art for Architecture" scheme, The Arts Council England, Creative Partnerships, Shepway District Council and South East Arts, and support from Arts Catalyst, Demos, Fondation de France, and £70,000 from The National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts, despite Autogena freely admitting that (in her own words) she knows "absolutely nothing" [5] about acoustics! Anyone with any knowledge of meteorological or acoustic science would know that any proposal to use parabolic reflectors to transmit human speech across the English channel always was inherently technically unsound. However, when in trouble, reach for the "community", so this expenditure has not only been rationalised as a product of "idealism", but also justified on grounds that it provided opportunities to host workshops teaching schoolkids about (no kidding) "science".
Despite the precedents, Autogena's website declares her ideas to be "groundbreaking" and "innovative" (!) and (equally predictably) contains passages that are almost verbatim quotes from earlier "Antiphony" texts. Writing in The Guardian, Tom Dyckhoff reported Autogena's promise to deliver the finished project "in 2002"... six years later, you'd have thought the penny might have dropped, but resources are still being diverted away from viable projects to try and keep this one afloat. The greater tragedy is that in response to increased public interest, a deep trench has now been cut in front of the main Sound Mirror site, which can only be crossed over a metal swing-bridge, which is normally locked shut - in other words the great and the good have responded to public enthusiasm for the Sound Mirrors, by spending public money on restricting public access to the Sound Mirrors.

Coleman wrote of Turner's work, "A dramatist's sense of event, intense and saturated coloration, and a distinct if indescribable otherness are omnipresent in Turner's images. You have seen his work in magazines and books, on record jackets, billboards, and posters--and as original, signed prints." George Eastman House Associate Curator of Exhibitions Jeanne Verhulst discusses images have influenced generations of photographers and continue to inspire the way we see.
In 1959, an expedition from Capetown to Cairo was a turning point in Turner's career. In 1967, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York exhibited "The Giraffe" from a 1964 expedition. A controversial image for the time, the giraffe, silhouetted against a brilliant red sky, illustrated his growing interest in treating color as a graphic element. A master colorist, he broke all the rules in a pre-computer era. Turner has continued his explorations of color and composition with a keen interest in the monumental point of view that often creates a surrealistic effect.
Pete Turner: Empowered by Color gathers together 61 photographs representing all of the facets of Turner's career, including early work from his first African expedition in 1959 to his latest work of architectural spaces in Mexico through 2005. (Less)

Johnson and were known as the Swing-Johnson bills. The bills failed to come up for a vote and were subsequently reintroduced several times. In December 1928, both the House and the Senate finally approved the bill and sent it to the President for approval. On December 21, 1928, President Calvin Coolidge signed the bill approving the Boulder Canyon Project. The initial appropriation for construction was made in July 1930, by which time Herbert Hoover had become President.
Early plans called for the dam to be built in Boulder Canyon, so the project was known as the Boulder Canyon Project. The dam site was eventually moved downstream eight miles to Black Canyon, but the project name remained the same.
Construction
[edit] Groundworks
Hoover Dam Architectural Plans
Overview Of Dam MechanismsTo protect the construction site from flooding, two cofferdams were constructed. Construction of the upper cofferdam began in September 1932, even though the river had not yet been diverted. A temporary horseshoe-shaped dike protected the cofferdam on the Nevada side of the river. After the Arizona tunnels were completed, and the river diverted, the work was completed much faster. Once the coffer dams were in place and the construction site dewatered, excavation for the dam foundation began. For the dam to rest on solid rock, it was necessary to remove all loose material until solid rock was reached. Work on the foundation excavations was completed in June 1933. During excavations for the foundation, approximately 1,500,000 yd³ (1,150,000 m³) of material was removed, including material removed in canyon wall stripping operations.
[edit] River diversion
To divert the river's flow around the construction site, four diversion tunnels were driven through the canyon walls, two on the Nevada side and two on the Arizona side. These tunnels were 56 feet (17.07 m) in diameter. Their combined length was nearly 16,000 feet (4877 m, more than three miles). Tunneling began at the lower portals of the Nevada tunnels in May 1931. Shortly after, work began on two similar tunnels in the Arizona canyon wall. In March 1932, work began on lining the tunnels with concrete. First the base or invert was poured. Gantry cranes, running on rails through the entire length of each tunnel were used to place the concrete. The sidewalls were poured next. Movable sections of steel forms were used for the sidewalls. Finally, using pneumatic guns, the overheads were filled in. The concrete lining is 3 feet (914.4 mm) thick, reducing the finished tunnel diameter to 50 ft (15.24 m).
Following the completion of the dam the entrances to the two outer diversion tunnels were sealed at the opening and half way through the tunnels with large concrete plugs. The downstream half of the tunnels following the inner plugs, are now the main body of the spillway tunnels. The spillways can be seen directly above the outer diversion tunnels. They drop sharply from their entrance point and merge directly into the old diversion tunnels.
Two intake towers on the Arizona side. The two inner diversion tunnels have two concrete plugs in them. One is roughly half way along their length, and the other is around 75% of the way along their length. The section sandwiched between two concrete plugs is used as part of the tunnel which water travels along, to journey from the outermost intake towers and the generators. The two innermost intake towers have separate tunnels.
The large spillway tunnels have only been used three times in the history of the dam; the first was during the second half of 1941 for testing. The second was for about six weeks during the summer of 1983, when record precipitation and snow-melt in the Colorado River basin drained into Lake Mead, and the third in 1999, again with heavy precipitation that filled Lake Mead.

It will include three elements: the land station, where guests will be welcomed, the connecting tunnel, which will transport people by train to the main area of the hotel, and the 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. It is one of the largest contemporary construction projects in the world, covering an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London's Hyde Park. "Hydropolis is not a project; it's a passion," enthuses Joachim Hauser, the developer and designer of the hotel. His futuristic vision is about to take shape 20m below the surface of the Arabian Gulf, just off the Jumeirah Beach coastline in Dubai.
The £300 million, 220-suite hotel is due to open at the end of 2007 and will incorporate a host of innovations that will take it far beyond the original blueprint for an underwater complex worthy of Jules Verne. There are only a few locations in the world where such a grandiose dream could be realised. A high proportion of today's architectural marvels are materialising like fanciful mirages from the desert sands. We have come to expect extravagant enterprises to be mounted in the Middle East, and especially in Dubai. "This venture could only be born here in Dubai," says Hauser. "It [has] a very open-minded, international community - and that's what makes it so special." The land on which Hydropolis is being built belongs to His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. It was his last free beach property on this stretch of coast. The project is a fantastic one, yet Sheikh Mohammed's success record with comparable schemes instils confidence that science fiction can become fact. With his support, several companies have been formed to kick-start this phenomenal project, and around 150 firms are currently involved. "There have been many visions of colonising the sea - Jules Verne, Jean Gusto and several Japanese architects - but no one has ever managed to realise this dream," says Hauser. "That was the most challenging factor, and that's what makes it so fascinating. Despite being a dream of mankind for centuries, nobody has ever been able to make living underwater possible."
