The Jewish exodus from Arab lands refers to the 20th century expulsion or mass departure of Jews, primarily of Sephardi and Mizrahi background, from Arab and Islamic countries. The migration started in the late 19th century, but accelerated after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. According to official Arab statistics, 856,000 Jews left their homes in Arab countries from 1948 until the early 1970s. Some 600,000 resettled in Israel, eaving behind property valued today at more than $300 billion. Jewish-owned real-estate left behind in Arab lands has been estimated at 100,000 square kilometers (four times the size of the State of Israel).
While violence and discrimination against Jews in Arab countries started to increase before 1948, it escalated significantly starting in 1948 despite the fact that Jews were indigenous and for the most part held Arab citizenship. Sometimes the process was state sanctioned; at other times it was the consequence of anti-Jewish resentment by non-Jews. Harassment, persecution and the confiscation of property followed. Secondly and in response to mistreatment of Jews in these countries, a Zionist drive for Jewish immigration from Arab lands to Israel intensified. The great majority of Jews in Arab lands eventually emigrated to the modern State of Israel.[4]
The process grew apace as Arab nations under French, British and Italian colonial rule or protection gained independence. Further, anti-Jewish sentiment within the Arab-majority states was exacerbated by the Arab-Israeli wars. Within a few years after the Six Day War (1967) there were only remnants of Jewish communities left in most Arab lands. Jews in Arab lands were reduced from more than 800,000 in 1948 to perhaps 16,000 in 1991.
Some claim that the Jewish exodus from Arab lands is a historical parallel to the Palestinian exodus during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, while others reject this comparison as simplistic. One Palestinian sociologist has commented that the loss of Jewish property in Arab lands fulfills the conditions of a sulha, or reconciliation, since Jews as well as Palestinians have experienced a catastrophe, and that publicizing this knowledge would pave the way to a true peace process.

Much of the London Stock Exchange has been bought by Qatari money obtained (More) I visited the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar, which is an Islamic state and one of the wealthiest nations in the world. Much of the London Stock Exchange has been bought by Qatari money obtained through its rich gas reserves.
It is estimated that in 4 years time, Qatari people could be the richest in the world. And its recently declared by Transparency International as the least corrupt nation in the Middle East. But what does this mean? The nation is a peninsula from Saudi Arabia. A small land mass consisting predominantly of uninhabited desert ** for camels and extreme *. Surrounded by the warm Indian Ocean, theres no source of all revenue for Qataris and an important part of their historical culture, along with the religion of Islam as these artifacts from the Islamic Museum in Doha show.
Sukkahs are lively places of socializing trade and music, and you can call it that. Since Roman Times, Qatar has acquired all its revenue from pearl, fishing and dried fish. A warm seas a home to a numerous variety of marine mouth, all of which are available at market. Along with live birds, which are kept as pets, the world being of animal is by no means a priority for this culture.
The remnants of Qatars northward parts are visible all around the bustling modern city of Doha. Commercial western culture is embraced. You can find Venetian gondolas alongside the traditional whirling dervishes in this shopping mall.
The nation's extreme wealth and power is entirely due to their ability to harness natural energy resources of the land: the huge amount of natural gas, which also makes Qatar a popular destination for western businesses. Its MartGlobal productions have recently documented a PR stem by an energy company named RasGas, which is the fifth largest enterprise in the world and also heartedly endorsed by the nations ruler. These girls were sponsored by RasGas to visit England and learn our culture, history and language, in return, they support the energy companies, who essentially run their nation. Companies like RasGas benefit enormously from the support of the ruler: Sheik Hamad Bin Khalifa AlThani and his family. His picture can be seen in every establishment in Doha. Hes something of a hero among the native Qataris, who pay no tax but receive housing benefits and free healthcare and education. But beneath the surface lies discontent, labors from India, Bangladesh and the Philippines are often forced to live in far more squalid conditions.
The Americans champion the nation as an example of Democracy in the Middle East. But despite the fact * has allowed parliamentary elections in which even women can voter, he will not allow its own position to be jeopardize by democratic process and the rest of those who even speak * by the one he instigated to take control of the nation away from his father.
Will the so-called democracy be liberal enough to cope with the inevitable culture revolution that international business brings to a nation? Torn between its loyalties to its neighboring nation Iran and Iraq, and to its business relation to Britain and America, Qatar may become increasing vulnerable politically

1260-1277 az-Zahir Rukn-ad-Din Baybars I al-Bunduqdari.
The first Mamluk dynasty was named Bahri after the name of one of the regiments, the Bahirya or River Island regiment. The name Bahri (بحري meaning 'of the sea') referred to their center in al-Manial Island in the Nile. The regiment consisted mainly of Kipchak Turks and Circassians.
The Bahri dynasty or Bahriyya Sultanate المماليك البحرية was a Mamluk dynasty of Kipchak Turk origin that ruled Egypt from 1250 to 1382 when they were succeeded by the Burji dynasty, another group of Mamluks. Their name means 'of the sea', referring to them ruling from Al-Manyal Island in the Nile (Bahr al-Nil) off Cairo.
In 1250, when the Ayyubid sultan as-Salih Ayyub died, the Mamluks owned by sultan killed his owner's heir, and the Mamluk general Aybak (who ruled 1250 - 1257) married Shajar al-Durr (Arabic: "String of Pearls"), widow of as-Salih. The Mamluks consolidated their power in ten years and eventually established the Bahri dynasty. They were helped by the Mongols' sack of Baghdad in 1258, which effectively destroyed the Abbasid caliphate. Cairo became more prominent as a result and remained a Mamluk capital thereafter.
The Mamluks were power cavalry warriors mixing the practices of the Turkic steppe peoples from which they were drawn and the organizational and technological sophistication of the Egyptians and Arabs. In 1260 the Mamluks defeated a Mongol attack at the Battle of Ain Jalut in modern-day Israel and eventually forced the invaders to retreat to the area of modern-day Iraq. Baibars, one of the leaders at the battle, became the new sultan after assassinating Sultan Qutuz on the way home.
In 1250 Baibars had led a successful attack against the Christian knights of Louis IX of France, whom he had captured and ransomed. He had also taken part in the Mamluk takeover of Egypt. In 1261 he established a puppet caliphate in Cairo, and the Mamluks fought the remnants of the Crusader states in Palestine until they finally captured Acre in 1291. Baibars preferred to purchase his new slave recruits from the Tatars. He also attempted to retake Baghdad, but was unsuccessful. In 1268 he recaptured Antioch from the Crusaders, and also fought the Armenians, Seljuks, and Hashshashin; he also extended Muslim power into Nubia for the first time, before his death in 1277.
His successor Qalawun defeated the Syrians when they tried to secede in 1280, and also defeated another Mongol invasion in 1281 outside Emesa. After the Mongol threat passed he recaptured Tripoli from the Crusaders in 1289. His son Khalil captured Acre, the last Crusader city, in 1291.
The Mongols renewed their invasion in 1299, but were again defeated in 1303. The Egyptian Moorish Sultans established a peace with the Mongols in 1322, and also entered into relations with the Golden Horde, sultan al-Nasir marrying a Mongol princess in 1319. His diplomatic relations were more extensive than those of any previous sultan, and included Bulgarian, Indian, and Abyssinian potentates, as well as the pope, the king of Aragon and the king of France. He died in 1341, and the constant changes of sultan that followed led to great disorder in the provinces; meanwhile, from 1348-1349 Egypt was visited by the Black Death, which is said to have carried off 900,000 of the inhabitants of Cairo.
Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad organized the digging of a canal in 1311 which connected Alexandria with the Nile.
In 1377 there was a revolt in Syria which spread to Egypt, and the government was taken over by the Circassians Berekeh and Barkuk; Barkuk was proclaimed sultan in 1382, ending the Bahri dynasty. He was expelled in 1389 but recaptured Cairo in 1390, setting up the Burji dynasty.

You can't spend time in Iraq without being introduced to the music of Kadhum Al Sahir (also known in much of the Arab world as Kazem). My first introduction to his music was in Dr. Riyadh's home. It was late and I was with Riyadh's daughters as they surfed the satellite channels and landed on a concert recorded in Egypt. They jumped up, dancing and singing to the music. My second introduction to Kadhum was six months later in a hotel room in New Jersey where I asked him to compose the music for the film.
Born in the northern city of Mosel, Kadhum was forced into exile by Saddam Hussein in the 1990s. Now the most famous singer in the Arab world, he has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Watching the concert on TV at Dr. Riyadh's, it was easy to see why.
When I returned to New York and began editing, I used his music as the temp track. One of the most dangerous things to do when editing is to fall in love with temp music, especially if he is famous. It was too late.
I heard that Kadhum would be performing a series of sold-out concerts in the U.S. I flew to Detroit where I went backstage and gave his manager a letter and some footage. The next day the manager called to say Kadhum wanted to meet me. They were on their way to New Jersey and I should come to their hotel.
The next night I was in their hotel room in New Jersey. I was discussing the film with Kadhum's manager as Kadhum was eating dinner before the concert. His manager explained to me, "Laura, Kadhum wants to do this, but the money you are proposing is really not enough." From the across the room Kadhum interrupted, "The money doesn't matter. It is for Iraq." The manager resumed, "Well, it seems Kadhum doesn't care about the money."
It was another unfathomable moment in a hotel room: Kadhum Al Sahir, perhaps the most respected musician and biggest star in contemporary Arab music, was agreeing to compose music for the film.
The next time I saw Kadhum Al Sahir was six months later in a recording studio in Toronto. I arrived with great anxiety — worried I had pushed my luck on this one. It had proven difficult to contact Kadhum and his managers after the New Jersey meeting. Repeated letters and contracts went unanswered. My producer and editor were both getting nervous as we approached the end of editing without music. I finally got the confirmation that Kadhum would give me an afternoon in a recording studio in Toronto. I arrived at the studio with no idea what he was going to record. His manager pulled me aside, "Laura, you are very lucky. Kadhum is composing something very special for the film."
And there was Kadhum Al Sahir, Iraq's most beloved son, sitting at the table writing. A few minutes later he was alone at the microphone singing "Oh my country, when will sadness set you free?" Kadhum only performs with musicians from Baghdad, and in the control room their eyes were filled with tears.

Description: People around the world are joining together in a global Day of Action as "The World Says No to Israeli Occupation" to protest the 40th anniversary of Israel's illegal military (More) People around the world are joining together in a global Day of Action as "The World Says No to Israeli Occupation" to protest the 40th anniversary of Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, and Syrian Golan Heights.
In the United States, thousands of people from all over the country will converge on Washington, DC from June 10-11, 2007 to send a clear message: The United States Says No to Israeli Occupation!
We know that occupation is wrong. We see U.S. troops occupying Iraq, and we say no. We see Israeli troops and civilians occupying Palestinian land, and we say no again. Wrong in Iraq, wrong in Palestine.
We in the United States have a special obligation to protest Israel's illegal military occupation because it is our government that provides Israel with the uncritical military, economic, diplomatic, and corporate support that it needs to sustain and expand its control of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.
If we do not protest, then we are complicit in the human rights abuses inflicted daily on Palestinians who are forced to live under Israel's brutal military occupation. In its 40 years of military occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, Israel has killed thousands of Palestinians and injured tens of thousands; destroyed thousands of homes; uprooted hundreds of thousands of olive trees; built hundreds of illegal settlements on expropriated land; denied Palestinians their human rights to food, water, education, livelihoods, and health care, and imposed a system of checkpoints, walls and fences, road closures, military bases, barricades, sieges, and curfews that restrict freedom of movement and collectively punish the entire Palestinian population.
Israel is committing these human rights violations with U.S. aid, in violation of the U.S. Arms Export Control and Foreign Assistance Acts. Every time Israel kills a Palestinian civilian with an F-16 fighter jet, Apache helicopter gunship, or Boeing JDAM missile, it is done with our taxpayer dollars in our name. Every time Israel demolishes a Palestinian home with a Caterpillar bulldozer, it is done with our taxpayer dollars in our name. Every time Israel steals Palestinian land to build another settlement, it is done with our taxpayer dollars in our name.
And Israel's human rights violations of the Palestinian people are not limited to the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Both in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Palestinians are subjected to a system of apartheid. Inside Israel, Palestinian citizens are discriminated against and cannot exercise their full rights as citizens. And Israel continues to deny Palestinian refugees, who were forcibly exiled from their homeland during Israel's establishment, their internationally guaranteed right of return.
On the 40th anniversary of Israel's military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, we will come together in Washington, DC to say "The United States Says No to Israeli Occupation" and to demand:
* An end to US military, economic, diplomatic, and corporate support for Israel's illegal military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem.
* A change in US policy to one that supports a just peace between Palestinians and Israelis based on equality, human rights and international law, and the full implementation of all relevant UN resolutions.

Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them." (Less) Channel: youtube
