Description: Devil's Pie lets you use Lisp (at least syntactically) to watch for the creation of new windows under Gnome (Ubuntu is based on Gnome), and control their position, scale, and things like which (More) Devil's Pie lets you use Lisp (at least syntactically) to watch for the creation of new windows under Gnome (Ubuntu is based on Gnome), and control their position, scale, and things like which desktop they appear on, if they're in fullscreen, or maximized mode, and even their pixel positions. It's pretty easy to set up. You just make a .ds file in your ~/.devilspie folder for each thing you want to watch for, and you do everything in one line of Lisp-like code in each file. Here's one of my examples, which watches for the appearance of Amarok, an mp3 player, moves it to my fifth desktop, moves it there to position +10,+10, effectively putting it on the left monitor, and then maximizes it: (if (is (application_name) "Amarok") (begin (set_workspace 5) (geometry "+10+10") maximize)) I made 6 .ds files - 1 each for Amarok, Firefox, Thunderbird (email), Maya (3D modeling/animation package), and 2 shells, one for editing in Vim (text editor), and one for just working in the shell. With devilspie running in the background, which I have it set to do at startup, any time I open one of the 4 apps, or run a command line to open a terminal with "gshell" or "vimshell" as their title (command line terminal option), each is moved to the appropriate desktop, then to the appropriate monitor on that desktop, and is then maximized to that screen. I made a bash script to open all 4 apps or shells in one shot, and then made a panel icon that calls it. I could also easily add a hotkey, but the button is fine for now. I click it, and my standard set of tools opens itself: desktop 1: left screen - Thunderbird right screen - Firefox desktop 2: left screen - bash shell right screen - bash shell for Vim desktop 3: left screen - Maya right screen - MEL editor desktop 4: empty for now - miscellaneous desktop 5: left monitor - Amarok I can get Maya to open the Script Editor on startup, and then look for that window with Devil's Pie, too, and move it to the empty monitor next to Maya on desktop 3, and maximize it there, which I'll do, as that's my default working setup. Beryl, and Compiz, the 3D setups are very nice, and I might move back to one of them in the future, but Beryl was just a bit too unstable for me, so I'm back in Metacity for now, and Devil's Pie gives me more control than Beryl's window options gave me, so despite not having the whizbang features of Beryl, like the 3D cube, I have a very functional, rock-solid desktop, with some nice features.
