I guess it's normal for (More) Paganini XXI Century - Michael Shulman, Neoclassical shred violin. A lot of people keep asking me "What is the violin that you play? It sounds so good!!..." I guess it's normal for people to assume that the sound they hear is coming directly from the instrument itself. Not so. Electric violin does not have a hollow body, like an acoustic one would. Hence - it actually does not have a sound. So in order to make music on el. violin a musician has to have a "pick-up" built in it's body, just like an electric guitar would. Finding a right pick-up is hard enough, because sadly, electric violin technology is still relatively in the "dark ages" but one must also keep in mind that having a great tone on el. violin means finding the right effects pedal/processor and sound system which will shape the sound into its final stage. However, the most crucial aspect of electric violin as an instrument is - how well the fingerboard/neck/nut and the bridge of the violin are crafted. There is no chance of getting the required type of quality control other than by having your instrument hand-made, custom to your requirements by a skilled professional. That's a lesson I had to learn the hard way. The electric violin presented in the clip is amateur. I bought it new for $200, online. It's a good example of a generic instrument which "looks" like a violin but "feels" rather like a piece of heavy wood with strings attached. No luck with a pick-up either. The one installed on this el. violin changes its volume/tone if the bridge (which rests on it) has only but slightly moved side to side or back & forth (I'm talking 1/10's of a millimeter here) making it impossible to have any control over your sound. One day it's good, another -bad... If the bridge moves by an accident or while you're tuning the strings - your "sweet" sound may be gone forever. The neck of this violin is covered by a heavy layer of varnish that makes the left hand's palm stick to it while playing up and down the fingerboard. That's why I actually sound better on this violin when playing with the winter gloves on (yep, I can do that too). But worst of all is the fact that the distance from the nut to the bridge is 7 millimeters shorter than it should be, hence making it impossible to even play in tune (even 1 millimeter makes a big difference for the violin) because the strings don't have enough tension. In short - here you have a video of me rockin' on the violin that was made "off-tune" by design. P.S. My new custom made 5-string electric violin "Black Dragon" (which took 10 months to make) is already here. Stay tuned.
