I ask you how else would we demonstrate against such a reduction in our civil liberties there is no way in which sympathy would be given if we stood outside city hall, which we can't do without a permit in this horrifically bureaucratic nation. This is a modern form of protest because frankly who gives a shit if your standing in the rain with a placard.
London Revelers Plan Last Cocktail Party Before Tube Booze Ban
By Brian Lysaght
May 30 (Bloomberg) -- Revelers are planning a final cocktail party on the London Underground tomorrow evening before an alcohol ban takes effect on June 1.
Mayor Boris Johnson announced the ban on May 7, six days after his election, fulfilling a campaign pledge. The new rule will bar alcohol consumption on city buses and trains and is aimed at making traveling safer and more pleasant, Johnson said.
``The Final Circle Line Party'' will take place in the rear cars of the 9 p.m. Circle Line train leaving from the clockwise platform at Liverpool Street station. Revelers should bring their own cocktails, said James Darling, 20, a Web site designer helping to organize the event, in an interview yesterday. Similar parties are happening on other lines.
``It's merely an opportunity to do one last time what we cannot do after June 1,'' Darling said in a telephone interview, adding that he's ``absolutely not'' taking a stand on whether the rule is a good or bad idea. Jackets are recommended for the gentlemen and dresses for the ladies, he said.
Darling said he is nervous because word of the event has spread across Web sites, and ``it's gotten bigger than anyone imagined.'' There were 9,134 confirmed guests as of today on two Facebook Web sites describing the bash.
``I want people to come and drink responsibly,'' he said.
Johnson, a Conservative member of Parliament who defeated two-term Labour Mayor Ken Livingstone in a May 1 election, made improving safety on the city's streets, buses and trains a priority in the campaign.
`Monitoring Behavior'
The British Transport Police will have extra officers deployed on the Tube, as the railway is known, tomorrow evening to observe the planned events.
``The officers will be monitoring the behavior of people and groups and will intervene in any instances of public order offenses,'' said Superintendent Ellie Bird, in an e-mailed statement.
When the new rules take effect, police will warn drinkers rather than issue tickets, she said.
The London Underground has no plan to try to stop the parties and advised the drinkers to act responsibly and consider their fellow passengers, said a spokesman for Transport for London, the city agency that operates the railway.
Crime declined last year on the Tube, according to police figures released on May 28. Total incidents fell by 11 percent from a year earlier to 16,445. Public order incidents such as drunkenness dropped by 3.4 percent to 1,981.
The railway carried 1 billion passengers last year for the first time. (Less) Channel: youtube

Sleaze, The Sequel
by George Will
CLINTON MAY NOT be the worst president America has had, but surely he is the worst person to be president. [NB: The doubt expressed in the setup phrase is, post-9/11, no longer operational.] There is reason to believe that he is a rapist ("You better get some ice on that," Juanita Broaddrick says he told her concerning her bit lip) and that he bombed a country to distract attention from legal difficulties arising from his glandular life, and that.... [F]urthermore, the bargain that he and his wife call a marriage refutes the axiom that opposites attract. Rather, she, as much as he, perhaps even more so, incarnates Clintonism.
"To understand her you have to understand him" is the thesis of "The Case Against Hillary Clinton," Peggy Noonan's slender, scalding book--a broadside, as such polemics were called when Tom Paine and Emile Zola penned them. It answers with a resounding "No!" the question of whether the passions swirling around New York's Senate race are disproportionate.
Noonan, a speechwriter for President Reagan and now a Wall Street Journal columnist, calls Mrs. Clinton's candidacy an act of "mad boomer selfishness and narcissism" shocking even in a Clinton. Noonan concedes that there is something admirable in Mrs. Clinton's "toughness." But a Noonan compliment, like a scorpion, has a sting in its tail: "Never has the admirable been so fully wedded to the appalling, never in modern American political history has such tenacity and determination been marshaled to achieve such puny purpose: the mere continuance of Them."
There is an almost magnificent banality to Mrs. Clinton's campaign. ("Our children are our future." "Governments must put children first." "Every time we pay tribute to art, particularly to art in a public place, we know it will cause a lot of thoughts to be thought and words to be spoken and ideas to be sparked.") But the banality echoes the utter emptiness of the record of what she calls her lifetime of "public service."
The service includes being a rainmaker for a remarkably dodgy Little Rock law firm, representing interests in front of regulators appointed by her husband. Her "public service" does not include any public accomplishment other than making a baroque (600 people in 38 subgroups, operating in illegal secrecy) debacle of health care reform.
Noonan's diagnosis of Mrs. Clinton's emptiness (of everything but staggering self-importance) accords with Elizabeth Kolbert's unenthralled report in the New Yorker ("Running on Empathy," Feb. 7) in which Kolbert says Mrs. Clinton's "listening tour" of New York state "tried to elevate nodding into a kind of political philosophy." Her candidacy, Kolbert writes, is based on "the quality of her concern, the heartfeltness of her convictions, and the depth of her feelings." By basing her campaign on an attitude ("sincerity"), Mrs. Clinton reduces questions of policy to questions of her disposition.
Noonan's book is not "balanced" and does not contain fresh facts. But it is no more imbalanced than "Common Sense" or "J'accuse," and her worthy purpose is to distill the meaning of the acid rain of facts about the Clintons' behavior with which we have been deluged.
"This highly credentialed rube," says Noonan in summing up, is "too corrupt for New York; she is too cynical for the place that gave birth to Tammany Hall." Noonan is one angry New Yorker, and although anger can be, and in this case is, a whetstone for sharp writing, it can subvert judgment. Did Noonan's anger do so? Consider.
Mrs. Clinton (like her recently announced Jewish step-grandfather?) is a longtime Yankees fan. She did not even know who Craig Livingstone, keeper of the FBI files, was--although a White House intern told House investigators that he heard her address Livingstone by name, in a friendly manner. Never mind staff notes indicating otherwise, she had nothing to do with the travel office firings, smearings and groundless prosecutions. She says she talks to her husband about everything--but had no inkling of his offer of clemency, over the vehement objections of the FBI and Bureau of Prisons, to 16 Puerto Rican terrorists.
Like the photograph of two Clinton friends holding hands as they jump up and down on Lincoln's bed, images of Clintonian vulgarities are vivid, and more are being produced. Recently there was the sheer fakery of Mrs. Clinton's successful struggle to answer David Letterman's questions about New York--questions she had been told in advance. Today Mrs. Clinton, who put Chelsea's nanny on the Arkansas payroll as a security guard, is chiseling taxpayers by her use of government planes for campaigning.
Will it--Clintonism--ever end? As the song says, it's up to you, New York. (Less) Channel: youtube

About 20 percent of the teens who were pulled over as they arrived at school were not wearing seat belts. Police informed them of the state's new junior-operator laws and checked to see if they were wearing seat belts, talking on cell phones or committing other violations.
"It's just informational today," Detective Sgt. Timothy Ballinger of the Kingston police said. "We wanted to give them the laws, and in the weeks to come we'll be stopping kids and we will cite people."
Ballinger said he noted several seat-belt violations and gave lollipops and key chains to teens who were obeying the laws.
That some teenage drivers do not realize the importance of seat-belt use is a major concern of Weymouth School Superintendent Mary Jo Livingstone. She said the Oct. 10 death of Weymouth High School student Catherine Crocker in a car accident brought the message to some students.
"That's why I liked the idea that it was more as a positive reinforcement," Livingstone said, talking about Thursday's sting.
She acknowledged that the operation made some students late for class and created traffic problems.
Registrar Anne Collins of the state Registry of Motor Vehicles said one car pulled over at Weymouth High School contained four teens with "a cavalier attitude," a driver who had been licensed for less than six months and two passengers without seat belts.
If police were enforcing the junior-operator laws on Thursday, the driver's license would have been suspended for 60 days and a fine would have been levied, Collins said. That's because in Massachusetts, drivers under 18 cannot drive with other teens in their car - siblings excluded - for the first six months after becoming licensed.
"We put it in their face," Collins said. "Hopefully we had an impact, at least on that girl's choices."
She said the Registry of Motor Vehicles, the state Department of Public Safety and local police departments collaborated on the Teen Safe Driver Week operation.
Most teenagers interviewed said they thought the sting was a good idea, though many certainly looked edgy as they rolled down their car windows to speak with police.
"I was kind of nervous," Silver Lake Regional High School senior Samantha Edwards said. "I didn't know what was going on. We didn't know if something was wrong with the school."
She felt better when she found out that police were just there to inform people.
Ryan Pittslui, a Silver Lake senior, thought police might be intending to search all of the cars for drugs. After finding out what the officers wanted, he said, "It's a good thing. It's keeping kids safe, and too many kids are dying these days." (Less) Channel: youtube

Dear New Mobility, World Transport, Kyoto Cities, LotsLessCars, Land Café and Global South Colleagues, wherever you may be this morning:
This is to express my heartfelt thanks to Todd Littman for all the fine work he has done over these last years, and which he so generously continues to share with all of us who care about these important matters. Cracking the hard nut of unsustainable transport and cities in desperate need of new ideas, examples and practices is not something that any one of us will ever be do in isolation. But by continuing to put our heads (and hearts) together, we will, I absolutely promise you, be able to make a difference.
All this comes to mind this morning as I race over the two latest of his rich offerings which just came in here yesterday: (a) "Win-Win Emission Reduction Strategies" at http://www.vtpi.org/wwclimate.pdf; and (b) "Win-Win Transportation Solutions," at http://www.vtpi.org/winwin.pdf. And then beyond that of course all that he shares with us via the Victoria Transport Policy Institute and the ever-useful Online TDM Encyclopedia at http://www.vtpi.org/tdm/index.php. What I so much appreciate about Todd's contributions and perspectives is that he takes on the same issues which are right up the center of our preoccupations here of what we call the New Mobility Agenda and which by any name is our common cause, and gives us his specific vision and interpretations. Through all that he shares with us, Todd informs me, reminds me, challenges me, and initiates a process of questioning and rethinking which I find most useful and enriching.
So thank you Todd for all that -- and now what? Well, to get the ball rolling, in addition to this all too brief note of thanks, I have just popped a small video note ( a minute and a half) in which I try to set out a couple of ideas on this, o which you can click directly from here via http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8312398871175245527&pr=goog-sl. (No big deal of course, but it always strikes me that richer forms of communications such as this at times have their place, and this is one of them)
As you will see there, the idea is simply to provide an indication of our collective thanks, possibly through a short (or less short is that is what you prefer) email, possibly copied to the New Mobility Agenda Idea Factory via the address NewMobilityCafe@yahoogroups.com so that we can eventually work them into some sort of compendium. In the past we have through our collective efforts found ways to gain high profile public recognition for the work of several of our colleagues and partners who are making important contributions to the sustainable cities and sustainable lives challenges. I would just remind you that thus far our list includes people like Enrique Penalosa (Bogotá), Hans Monderman (Groningen), Jan Gehl (Copenhagen), Ken Livingstone (London), Lee Myung-Bak (Seoul), Sue Zielinski (Toronto), and Wolfgang Zuckermann. As well as a fair number of projects that are leading the way in areas such as carsharing (Helsinki, San Francisco, Paris, Gothenburg), Walk to School programs, and yes even Car Free Days here and there.
Now I am not quite sure how all this ties in to how we might express our thanks to Todd for all his hard work that serves many of us so well, but here you have a thought and now let's see what we do with it. It's your turn.

Resting peacefully on the banks of the Zambezi River, under a grove of evergreen Mahogany trees, Chiawa Camp holds the prime position in the heart of Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park. It is at this very spot, where David Livingstone ventured through nearly 150 years previously, where the Cumings Family in 1989 created the very first photo safari operation in the Lower Zambezi National Park and what has since become one of Africa's most desirable, sought after safari destinations. Constructed mainly of natural materials Chiawa Camp blends in effortlessly with its idyllic surroundings and it is here where guests receive the very best Africa has to offer. A stunning thatched lounge/bar area with upstairs viewing deck provides one of the best views of the Zambezi Zambia safaris offer Africa's authentic yesteryear safari camps and lodges for those wanting to see wildlife away from the crowds. With 4-6 rooms on average, Zambia has maintained an authentic African safari experience where a native Zambian actually participates and benefits from trickle down tourism. Having few numbers of visitors has an inverse relationship to the quality of experience: the fewer the number of vehicles and tourists, the more preserved the environment, and subsequently a better the wilderness and wildlife experience in Africa. On Zambia Travel: Planning Zambia vacations, after seeing the whole Africa safari experience in Kenya and Tanzania's safari park and reserves, truly means you have graduated to the next best level of African safaris. By then it will not be about the glitz and glamor of your Africa safari lodge, safari camp, hotel, but how authentic you want the experience to be. I hope this is beneficial in planning a Zambia holiday. Thank you for supporting Africa and its potential. In Zambia You can experience the finest wildlife, Zambia's famous walking safari, low environmental impact safaris, varied Zambian cultures with over 74 tribes. (Less) Channel: metacafe
